Under the Microscope: Evaluating the Product’s Pluses and Minuses
Many users have expressed satisfaction with the Shark robot vacuum’s performance. For instance, Christine Driggers praises its ability to clean in straight row patterns and its self-emptying feature, even with multiple pets at home. The efficient and quiet operation of the vacuum has also been noted by Phil C., who appreciates the self-emptying feature, stating it only needs to be emptied about once a week. Emily Hutton expressed delight at the upgrade from a Roomba, mentioning the Shark robot vacuum’s intelligence, ease of use, better features, and quietness. The ability to set a cleaning schedule and have the vacuum work unsupervised is a benefit that Jonathan Jolly finds valuable, especially with two large dogs at home. The appreciation for the vacuum’s capability to navigate and clean thoroughly without getting stuck is shared by users like Deb C., who also commends the ease of emptying the dustbin. Rob Russo has had a positive experience with the product for four months, particularly highlighting its safety on Persian rugs and fringes.
Furthermore, users like Cpw910 are extremely satisfied with the Shark vacuum’s performance over several months, especially its self-cleaning ability and effectiveness in dealing with pet hair. The user also appreciates the machine’s ability to find its way back to the charging dock. The quietness and cleaning ability on both hard floors and carpets have been commended by Martha Webb. Users like Judy Coffman are pleased with the vacuum’s performance in larger spaces like a church sanctuary, where it has been named “Ed” and performs its job reliably. The amazement at the amount of dust and debris collected by the vacuum is shared by Karenlpe, who recommends the product without hesitation.
Despite these positives, there are several drawbacks noted by customers. Art Vandelay, for example, complains about frequent clogging, with numerous notifications within a short period. Chaynie Nelson and Kat have had issues with the vacuum malfunctioning, citing an inability to work on an even surface and a complete lack of functionality, respectively. Kat, in particular, highlights the frustration with the app’s mapping feature and poor customer support from Shark, including being offered a billable service for a new product. V.A. Land describes the product as loud and inefficient with pet hair, requiring a search for an alternative already. Hannah warns potential buyers that some products may be refurbished without clear disclosure, and A. Moore finds the tank capacity and app features to be suboptimal compared to expectations.
Other users have faced technical issues with the app and connectivity, as noted by William H., who struggled with account verification for setup. Jkerlz criticizes the mapping function and the robot’s tendency to vacuum the same area repeatedly, compounded by unhelpful customer support. C. B. echoes these sentiments, pointing out the glitchy nature of the app. Kindle Customer is disappointed by the vacuum’s limited cleaning area due to programming constraints, and Michael Kiese initially gave a 1-star review due to the product’s inability to connect to the app and the frustrating customer service experience.
Will C feels cheated after purchasing what was supposed to be a new product but turned out to be a refurbished one that ceased functioning, with no satisfactory resolution. Joshua’s experience is particularly negative as he points out that the product delivered was not as advertised, lacking the specific features of the Shark AI ULTRA model.
What do the stars speak of?
Opinions about this product were divided in such a proportion among the buyers.
the machine is wonderful, but delicate. One time the bumper got stuck, and it took ten minutes with a screwdriver to fix it. Otherwise, it’s the hardest working member of the household……
Works great…….. except it is always clogged. On November 10th I have already received 11 clogged notifications this month.
Inquiries & Responses: Your Doubts Clarified
1. How does the Shark IQ Robot Vacuum’s self-empty base work?
The self-empty base is a convenient feature of the Shark IQ Robot Vacuum AV1002AE. After each cleaning session, the robot vacuum automatically docks to the base, where it empties the debris it collected into a bagless bin. This means you don’t have to manually empty the vacuum after each use, and the base can hold up to a month’s worth of dirt and debris, depending on your usage and home size.
2. Can the Shark IQ Robot Vacuum be used on both carpets and hard floors?
Yes, the Shark IQ Robot Vacuum is designed for dual-action cleaning and can efficiently work on both carpets and hard floors. Its self-cleaning brushroll is engineered to prevent hair wrap and to provide powerful cleaning on all surfaces.
3. Is the Shark IQ Robot Vacuum compatible with smart home devices?
Indeed, the Shark IQ Robot Vacuum is compatible with various smart home devices. It can be controlled through voice commands using Amazon Alexa or through your smartphone and tablet. This makes it very convenient to start, stop, or schedule cleaning sessions even when you’re not at home.
4. How do I set up boundary strips for the Shark IQ Robot Vacuum?
The Shark IQ Robot Vacuum comes with BotBoundary strips that you can lay out around areas or objects you want to keep the vacuum away from. Simply place the strips on the floor, and the robot’s sensors will detect them and avoid crossing into the restricted areas.
5. What is the battery life of the Shark IQ Robot Vacuum, and how long does it take to recharge?
The Shark IQ Robot Vacuum has a battery life that allows it to clean for up to a month on a single charge, depending on usage. Recharging times can vary, but typically it takes several hours for the vacuum to fully recharge. The vacuum will automatically return to its base to recharge when the battery is low.
6. Does the Shark IQ Robot Vacuum come with a warranty?
Yes, the Shark IQ Robot Vacuum comes with a 1-year limited warranty from the manufacturer, SharkNinja. This warranty covers defects in material and workmanship under normal household use.
7. How much capacity does the dust bin in the self-empty base hold, and is it easy to maintain?
The self-empty base has a capacity of 0.17 quarts, which allows it to hold multiple cleaning sessions’ worth of dirt and debris. It is designed to be easy to maintain, with a bagless design that requires you to simply open the base and empty it into the trash when it’s full.
8. What maintenance is required for the Shark IQ Robot Vacuum?
To ensure optimal performance, the Shark IQ Robot Vacuum requires regular maintenance, which includes emptying the dust bin in the self-empty base, cleaning the filter, and removing any tangled hair or debris from the brushroll. The manufacturer provides specific instructions for maintaining your vacuum, and it’s important to follow these to keep your vacuum running smoothly.

Fool Me Twice…
I’ve owned two of these robot vacuums, and they are great when they work. However, both vacuums died within six months or less, both with the same error code that couldn’t be explained or fixed: Obstruction. Followed the troubleshooting instructions and cleaned the vacuums thoroughly, but the error code rendered the vacuums useless. I should have learned my lesson when it happened to the first vacuum, but thought it was a fluke. Second vacuum suffered the same fate. Many other reviewers have had the same problem, save the trouble and money.

A year later review: It picks up dirt and hair, but it is not very good at it!
I wanted to wait to write this review until I had the unit fully integrated into cleaning my home. It has been over a year and I am NOT impressed with the much on unit. What it does well: It maps perfectly and pretty quickly. The map does not improve after the first mapping, but it is pretty thorough. The map can be modified to add “no-go zones” and the naming of the rooms in the app is easy. The dustbin function works well. The robot, even if ineffective in cleaning up dog hair, empties into the dustbin effectively and efficiently. It does require emptying more often than 30 days, but it works fine. It comes online, pairing easily with wifi. What it does not do well: The suction power of this unit is horrible. Its more of a rake than a vacuum. It runs the course of cleaning, even at “Max” power and will not pick up dog hair. It clumps it up and leaves it scattered all over the house. One would think if it gathered it, it would swing back and pick it up. It will not. I have even intentionally dropped some in its path and it does not pick it up. This unit does NOT perform well on carpet. Don’t even bother if you have predominantly carpet in your home – get something else. This unit does an okay job on hardwood, but does not pick up everything and certainly does not do a thorough enough job not to have to sweep/vacuum after its done. This is not what I expect from a robot vacuum, I expect it to vacuum well and not leave chores for me to do to help it finish. Although it has a roller that is supposed to keep from getting built up, it still does. I have two Corgis and they shed a LOT, but their hair is not long. I had to clean the roller unit at least once a week. Bottom line – do not buy this unit unless you have a pet free home and no carpet. It would do an okay job in that envionment, otherwise, this is a waste of money. I am moving it upstairs in my home because I am sure I will never be able to get my investment back. What a disappointment. I wanted to love it, but it just never performed and I hoped it would improve, but never did.

Comes with the inferior newer dock design.
I’ve owned a couple of Shark IQ robovac’s over the years for both my home & second home. They all work OK, but the docks have gotten more poorly designed over the years. So if you have to replace a Shark IQ robovac but your old one has an older dock, keep the old dock as it probably works better than the new dock. The best designed dock was the XSKAEDOCK model. It kept the debris in the debris chamber, and almost nothing reached the white foam filter. So little met the foam filter in the XSKAEDOCK that it only needed washing about once a year. The newer docks let too much past the debris chamber and that white foam filter will clog after only a few uses, so you’ll notice the robovac not fully emptying it’s own chamber very quicky. On these newer docks, you better be prepared to wash that foam filter after every other vacuuming.

ONLY LASTED ONE YEAR
I ordered this shark vacuum one year ago and I’ll start off by saying that was always a hassle to use. It would get stuck on nothing all the time. It was always saying it was on a cliff when it was in the middle of the floor on a completely even surface. The suction power is laughable even when on the max setting and now on this very morning of the post it finally quit. It is stuck on the “cliff” error and will not operate. I paid 600 dollars for a vacuum that lasted one year and barely did its job at that. Do not purchase.

Amazing Robot Vacuum!
This amazing Shark AI Robot Vacuum has accomplished everything I was hoping for, and more. Pet hair is now gone and this Vac is looking for more! Once I got through a bit of a complicated set up with passwords and my interner connections, it was smooth sailing and a a great clean up job resulted. It was only complicated because I am not all that tech savy. Just be patient, let it map out your home, and just stick to a “clean entire house program”. I am still amazed it how much pet hair it is evaporating. 5 Thumbs Up for the Shark IA robot vacuum cleaner.

Disconnects
AMAZON REFUSES TO ACCEPT A RETURN ON THIS DESPITE IT SHOWING UP DEFECTIVE. It continually disconnects. We have been in direct contact with Shark in regards to this. Yet I’ve been through 8 agents who won’t accept a return. So save yourself some hassle and don’t buy it.

Broken
I’m very disappointed with the shark vacuum after a little over a year of use my vacuum is now broken. I tried all the methods in the manual to get my vacuum working again and after calling customer service they informed me that since I did not turn off my vacuum prior to removing the filter tht now my unit has been rendered useless and I have to buy a whole new vacuum minus a 30% discount. This is extremely frustrating considering there is not even an on and off switch or any warnings on the vacuum itself saying tht the vacuum needs to be turned off prior to removing filter. I had removed and cleaned the filter many times prior to this with out turning unit completely off with no problems. It seems to me that this flaw would come with some sort of warning on the filter itself with instructions on how to turn off (you have to hold down clean button for 5 seconds). We own a traditional shark vacuum and my wife owns one of their hair dryers as well so very frustrating to maintain brand loyalty only to be punished with such a faulty robot vacuum.

Great
Best thing I ever brought. Easy to assemble. Cleans better than when I was vacuuming.
Chaynie Nelson –
Stopped working
It worked really well for about 6 months and then it stopped working. It says its on an uneven surface. We have tried every fix Shark has suggested. We have cleaned every piece of the machine. It simply doesn’t work.
Art Vandelay –
Constant upkeep/maintenance required
Works great…….. except it is always clogged. On November 10th I have already received 11 clogged notifications this month.

Love it!
I set the sweeper to sweep at 3 a.m. and get up with beautiful straight row lines on the carpet. I love that it does not do random patterns. I also like the self emptying. The self emptying bin isn’t as large as i thought it would be and would never make it 30 days, let alone 60 before needing emptied. I have a Husky, 2 cats and 2 long haired small dogs. I thought this was supposed to be a no tangle brush but hair did accumulate and i got a stopped brush error and had to clean it. All in all i would purchase this again.

Doesn’t work and Shark offered ZERO support
The vacuum cannot be controlled by the app. It’s supposed to have a mapping feature, scheduled cleaning, Alexa integration, etc. and NONE of that is available on the app. My new vacuum “explored” for two hours (it was supposed to take 25-45 minutes) and then docked. There should have been a map available afterward, but the app was stuck saying “processing map…” Then, it decided to run itself again in the middle of the night and get stuck behind a door. As I said, I can’t control it so it just ran for 40 minutes until it got stuck. I had to rescue it in the morning and put it on the dock. It immediately decided to explore again. So, it’s explored 3 times at this point and I still don’t have a map or any control of the machine. I finally contacted customer service. Long story short, they said I probably had a firmware problem and a technician would have to call me, which is a BILLABLE SERVICE! I refused to consent to PAY for a customer service phone call for a brand new machine that doesn’t work. The representative got pretty rude and refused to offer any other solution. So, I’m returning this piece of junk and buying from a different brand. I will NEVER buy a Shark product again. BTW, I looked up my firmware – no updates available. And I did a factory reset and went through the entire time-consuming set up again (without customer service support). Still a piece of trash.

Really like this vacuum
This is the second robat vacuum we have owned and while the other one was good, we really like this one better. A large part of that is the self-empying feature which means you only have to empty it about once a week. The vacuum is very efficient and on medium suction it cleans our 1500 square foot house without needing to recharge. The vacuum is quieter than our previous one and it cleans better. There are a couple of things that I would change but they are minor and I am kind of nit=picking. 1. If you set it to empty and recharge it will not finish cleaning until it is completely recharged even if there is very little left to clean. 2. The cleaning map will show you what was cleaned but only after it is complete. You cannot see what has or hasn’t been done while the vacuum is working. 3. You can’t set the sequence. It would be nice to be able to get certain rooms done before others. 4. The map should show the location of the vacuum. If the vacuum has an issue, if the location was shown on the map it would be easy to find. Walking around listening for it works but the map would be better. This is a really good vacuum and we like it a lot. The things I would change are VERY minor and do not affect the cleaning capability of the vacuum which is great.

Not good for pet hair!
I’ve had this a little over a year, operating every other day… Here’s what I notice. There are so many fuzzy parts on the bottom of this vaccum that constantly get a build up of pet hair and ends up dragging dirt and dust, leaving a trail. It gets lost easily when its trying to return to the base. It’s loud. I’m looking for a different one already.
A. Moore –
I wish I could do a 3 1/2 starts
Ok as someone that used a Roomba with self empty features I have a fairly good comparison. The Roomba I think does a slightly better job on suction. However the fact I am not constantly having to replace a brush it actually really good. I was supposed to replace the brushes and vacuum bag on the Roomba almost once a month. I DONT have to do that with the Shark. The Shark only allows for 1 Map to be stored. Roomba I could have as many as I wanted. I could map different rooms and specifically tell it to clean those rooms. Shark only allows 1 Map also the map features I think are a little more complicated to use. Roomba doesn’t have a bagless option. That is literally why I got the shark. I am loving not having to use the bags. I don’t believethe tank is a 60 day tank. I have run it for a week now and had to empty it 3 times. That being said I also have lots of animals. However I honestly expected a slightly larger tank. Not a deal breaker though. Also it took me a lot longer to pair my shark to the app then it did my Roomba. Customer support was nice but by the time they got me to the correct department to help I got it paired on my own and I still don’t know why it randomly just worked. I figured out how to get my Roomba connected to the Alexa in less than 20 minutes. The Shark I still haven’t figured out how to make that feature work. I also miss the Roomba feature that lets me see an analysis of cleaning throughout the month. Roomba is very basic. Also keep in mind I am comparing similar systems. Meaning the Roomba I had is basically the equivalent to the shark system. However at least for now I am happy with the shark even with the issues we have had

Beware they are refurbished!!!
I’ve always been a fan of shark products. I had this one for a month and it stopped working. It was actually a few days after the return policy was no longer valid. I first contacted Shark because I had filled out the one year warranty. They had told me that it was a refurbish shark iRobot and I was confused because it says nothing about this product being refurbished. I then called Amazons customer helpline they first wanted to say that it was the battery and that they would send me a new battery, but I was adamant that I wanted my money back so they finally decided to allow me to return it after all, and send me my money. So please be aware that they are selling refurbished vacuums!!!

Never buying a Roomba again
3 cats and a 900 sq ft apartment with tons of hardwood floors means my robot vacuum is an essential. Went through two $600 roombas in 3 years. They were clumsy, loud and unreliable. Very glad I switched to Shark brand. This vacuum is already smarter, easier to use, better features and is extremely quiet.

Unable to Verify Account to Setup Shark App [UPDATED]
11/05/2023 Update and Revised to 4 Stars (minus 1 Star for app / account setup issue): Customer service was friendly and was able to send a new, working verification link for my account. I have been using the new Shark for several days now. Setup was easy once the app recognized my login. I charged the Shark for a couple of hours, programmed it to learn the rooms/layout and then labelled each room as well as do not go areas. Overall, very easy to setup and use, especially with the auto empty feature. I have used iRobot vacuums in the past, and the Shark is very comparable in vacuum features. The self-empty base and bagless are nice upgrades to what I have used in the past. The Shark can get loud as others have commented. Overall, it is a good vacuum. I use it primarily for hard surface areas like the kitchen and breakfast / dining areas. 10/29/2023 Original Review for 1 Star: I am not able to actually review the Shark I purchased. I have been trying to setup a new Shark Clean account to connect the app to the Shark. The app and website keep indicating my account is not verified and to click the verification link in my e-mail to verify my account. Each time I click the verification link, the website asks me to login but doesn’t seem to verify my account. I have tried to verify my account through the app / phone and different computer browsers about 7 different times including requesting a new verification link e-mail. Each time I get the same error. Disappointing as the first impression. I will call customer support when they open.
