What’s Good, Bad, and Ugly About the Self-Empty Robot Vacuum? An In-Depth Review
One user, Casey Johnson, was extremely satisfied with the Shark RV1001AE IQ Robot Self-Empty XL’s performance in a home with hardwood floors and pets, stating that it’s a “game changer” and “She definitely needs dumped every few days being that we have four dogs that shed. But she has no problem cleaning up all the dog hair twice a day for us. We absolutely love her.”
Another user, Stacey, emphasized the vacuum’s efficiency and convenience, expressing that it “keeps my first floor spotless, running it once or twice a day,” and plans to buy another for the second floor. The ease of setup was also a highlight, with Stacey noting, “It was a breeze to set up. Highly recommend.”
Desertrosebud, a senior citizen, praised the ease of use and the self-emptying feature, saying “Rosie works great and does a thorough job of cleaning my house… Rosie goes back to the base when needed to empty the debris into the bagless base container, then goes right back out to finish the job.”
On the downside, Vonnie mentioned that the vacuum “doesn’t pick up the dirt very well and doesn’t reach all the main spots,” requiring a second run with a traditional vacuum, which was disappointing given the price.
Yaroslav Nikolenko expressed frustration with the robot’s functionality, stating it “doesn’t clean enough properly,” and faced issues with it “sometimes turns on nighttime very loud.” The connectivity issues also made it difficult to use, as it “sometimes disconnected from application and can’t be used.”
The stars speak of…
Opinions about this product were divided in such a proportion among the buyers.
This robot is working great for our family home so far. It has mapped the main floor perfectly. Each day it runs it gets better and better at getting every inch of the room area. We have used it for 1 week daily and each day I am surprised on how much pet hair and dust it picks up. I would recommend this product for this price range. Worth the money.
Not the worst but definitely not the best, doesn’t pick up the dirt very well and doesn’t reach all the main spots I got it for. I have to go over again with my own vacuum and that defeats the purpose especially for the price of it. Overall I’m not too thrilled with it if I’m being honest

Good for a house with kids and pets
I spent more this time on my $25 garage sale special last time. I remember having to hunt the old vacuum down to charge it and entry it; it was very needy. This new vacuum maps out where I want it to be. I blocked off 4 rooms by closing the door during the mapping process and it doesn’t go in those rooms. When I send it out to clean it does as good of a job as I can expect. When it’s full it goes back to the base, unload the trash, then goes back out to keep cleaning. When (in our house it’s not an if) the battery dies during cleaning it will charge itself then keep cleaning after it charges. I empty the bin and filters on the base and the filter in the vacuum. I also clean the brushes. I’ve had it for about a month and it was lost 1 time. It got stuck on a sock (kids) and was lost under some furniture. Other than that it’s been amazing.

Item arrived late and missing parts
I promised this vac as a Thanksgiving gift, but it arrived 4 days late because Anizon chose to wait till the last minute to ship, then when it arrives it’s missing parts. but what arrived looks good, as it should being advertised as like new. so I am missing a filter and door I think

Cleans well
Love this ai shark robot the only thing is, it takes a bit of time to set it up. And I find that telling the robot to clean the whole first floor it jammed with dust. After cleaning it, I then told it to clean two rooms at a time. The robot has done well. My only complaint is that you really can’t do multiple floors. I have a three floor house. You have to buy one for each floor that gets expensive. So I with they were able to map out different floor with on robot.

Works Good Enough
Overall this product will get the job done…mostly. I have 2 dogs and the vacuum gets stuck often with matted hair and debris. I think that this could be a problem with all robot vacuums. I like the vacuum and it does a good job but things could be improved. For the price this is definitely worth it.

Beyong smart!
Does a great job cleaning and lets me know if something needs to be done.

Worked for less than a year.
I bought this 2 years ago when we started remodeling our house. Kept it in storage in my office in it’s original packaging until about 10 months ago when the house was ready. It ran mostly every day since then, but now the cliff sensor error prevents it from cleaning. Have cleaned sensors multiple times, have done a factory reset, nothing seems to fix it. Unfortunately since I bought it and didn’t use it right away it is out of warranty and there are no parts available to fix it myself. I now have a $400+ useless brick. I won’t be buying Shark products ever again. What a waste of money.

Had hoped for better for the price
This little vacuum kinda sucks (not in the good way). I had hoped for something that’d keep the kibble my dog likes to leave around the house in check but it does a very poor job at picking them up. The vacuum also doesn’t get up against walls very well at all (example: straight foot board with clumps of dog hair along it the vacuum just completely misses all the hair). I didn’t expect a full sized vacuum clean from this unit amd fully expected to still break out the big vacuum weekly but I’m still disappointed. Not sure if mine has a sensor issue or if it’s normal for the vacuum to think something is in its way in the middle of the living room and stop, do a turn, go forward a bit, stop, do a turn and get back “on track”. Will run it a few more times and see if that fixes the issue…. I’m also a bit disappointed you can’t set a runtime of say 10 minutes then have it go evacuate what it’s collected and then cycle clean – evacuate 10 minutes repeat. It does do it every 30 minutes but that I feel is just too long.

Awesome!
Got this because I have two large dogs that shed like there’s no tomorrow. This vacuum picks up the hair and dust very effectively. When it’s full, it will make a sound and go to the charger/dispenser, empty, and go to the location where it was at. The app is super easy to use. I like that I can run it when I’m away from home and come home to a swept floor!

Amazed , brilliant, 5 stars
Far superior then any iRobot, have been loyal to iRobot till horrible customer service , and warranty repairs. The value for this shark is amazing , 1/2 the price of my iRobot , setup was simple, charged quickly, 1 st trip around my home scanned in entire home, played out map, asked to crest rooms , labels, no go zones. Was simple. Set schedule, and ran perfectly, cleaning is far superior, uses laser ai vision, did not run into anything, , easy crosses transitions on flooring. Cleans quickly , quietly, empties itself quickly and returns back to the job it left. Very stable and surefooted on all surfaces. Hands down amazing.

Worthless. wont connect to wifi
i have had the shark robot vacuum before in one of their earlier models and it worked “ok” picked up the pet hair but i still had to vacuum once or twice a week with a standup vacuum. Then about a year ago I upgraded my internet to fiber optic internet and my old shark robot would not connect to the Wi-Fi, so i chalked it up to being an older model and not compatible with new internet protocols and stored it away. Fast forward to black Friday 2023 and i buy this model with all the new features. and guess what… it to would not connect to my internet. I have spent two days on the phone with shark tech support as will as my internet tech support and after jumping thru all of their hoops nothing is resolved. I have several other devices including the Ring doorbell and other security cameras and such that use the 2.4G internet with no problem. So no save your money and dont buy this vacuum. its junk and even when they do work they are only so so at best.

DID NOT WORK right out of the box!
Did not work at all. Website worthless and customer service made excuses but could not get it to work either. Sending it back and will never buy another Shark product.

Quit working within first year.
We were very disappointed that this product quit working within a year of purchase. We researched thoroughly and bought this more expensive vacuum in hopes it would work better and would last longer. It did not and we were unable to get it fixed or replaced by company. It worked decently although we had to clean it out often and we do NOT have pets or children that live with us. Spend your money on another brand. I’m a little late to post a review but as I was looking to purchase a new one I thought of it.

Was great until it wasn’t
This was great at first until after a few months ago when it stopped working correctly. There was an error that no matter what I did wouldn’t clear. Tried resetting and cleaning it without success. Wouldn’t recommend this.
james –
It cannot clean 4o minutes without asking for me to empty its dust bin.
Sharkey navigates great and cleans reasonably well for one pass. It is supposed to empty itself for up to 60 days. However, it cannot empty itself of one day’s vacuum detritus. Then it asks for its dustbin to be emptied. What good is a self emptying vacuum if it can’t self empty? It is useless. I have had it for two months. I thought maybe it needed to work every day for a while so there wouldn’t be so much in the bin. Still the same useless inability to self-empty. I have probably emptied it 50 times in two months. It will go back to the source.

Complicated
Too Complicated to set up . But my computer skills are not good.
Phil –
Powered by artificial stupidity
Can’t sense a dropoff and will tumble down stairs if allowed to. Can’t map multiple disconnected areas or multiple floors. Worst of all for me, if you move one small piece of furniture, that spot won’t get cleaned until you wipe your entire map and start over. Actual cleaning is OK, not great. Overall, using the clunky app can easily eat up as much time as vacuuming by hand, and it (all of it — the stupid chimes, the noisy base station, the vacuum itself) is too loud to run while trying to sleep.
Kaitlyn DeBruyne –
Did not last – not worth the money
We bought this vacuum to help with pet hair in addition to our normal vacuuming. It worked really well for the first 6 months and then we kept getting error messages for the brush roll being stuck and continued to get the message despite cleaning out the brush roll every 2-3 days and even replacing the brush roll. We would have to completely factory reset the device to solve the problem which in turn deletes the map of our house and all of our schedules and no-go zones. Now we can’t fix it at all and Shark customer support doesn’t recognize our device. I would not recommend this product for anyone with pets as it did not last as long as we hoped it would, especially for the high price tag we paid.

One of the Best purchase for our home to date
Great Vacuum, Cleans up over 90% of the dog hair and dirt my kids track into the house. have had no issue with it. the Matrix clean is amazing for getting your floors super clean. if you have allergies, this thing picks up a ton of dust. low maintance i very rarely have to empty out the trash container.

Suction power
I love this thing! I have a house keeper and maintain a clean house with two small indoor dogs. My down stairs is all hard floor. I could not believe how much debris this little robot picked up in between my house keepers cleanings (hidden dirt, lint, hair, etc). I took it upstairs today which is carpeted. It left nice vacuum trails and cleaned my carpet, bathroom tile floors, and shag carpet throw rug and bathroom floor mats. Both of my adult kids raved about the shark. I was skeptical but love it. The self emptying feature is really nice too.

Not as good as my old Roomba
I’ve been using this vacuum for the last 6 months hoping everyday that it would miraculously get as good at cleaning as my old Roomba. But no… The old Roomba was a tank and could navigate any terrain. But the shark hits the thresholds and limps away. Roomba was starving all the time and would pick up all the crumbs along the kitchen baseboard but the shark has no appetite and the crumbs just accumulate until I sweep. The best thing about the shark is that it tranfers it’s dust bin to the base. And it never seems to get full because it doesn’t pick up as much. So I just forget about it until I notice the crumbs, check the app, and find another notification that something got stuck in the bin door and it hasn’t vacuumed for the last 5 days or so. That’s the other thing I miss about my old Roomba , no app (no settings, so nagging notifications) just plug it in, set the schedule and let it go. And it always went. And it always picked up everything…until the day it didn’t. Nothing compares to your first love I guess.

Won’t clean individual rooms
I purchased this unit in July. I followed all instructions, let the vacuum map daily for 3 weeks, set up rooms as directed, but when I asked it to clean a room (the kitchen) as opposed to the whole place, it cleaned the whole place. Tried different rooms – same result. Contacted support, tried everything they asked. Time ran out to return the vacuum. Nothing worked. Support told me to delete the map, allow the vacuum to remap for at least 8 days, then relabel rooms. I gave it 14 days of mapping the whole place again, and set up rooms again. Still won’t map one room. Support had PROMISED me a call back, they never called back. Now it’s November, well past the return window. This vacuum doesn’t have great suction. It won’t clean just one room. My old EcoVac would clean just one room, and could be scheduled to clean different rooms at different times. This vacuum cannot do any of that. I hate it – I really do. But Support ran through my return window, so I’m stuck with it. DON’T BUY THIS – SUPPORT WILL MAKE SURE YOU CANNOT RETURN IT IF THERE IS A PROBLEM!

Piece of crap
keep getting front bumper stuck error, followed faq on issue. No resolve. unit only runs 2 days a week, not every day. Contacted Shark customer service and got nothing. plan on bring my irobot rooms in service

Squeaky, doesn’t empty dog hair
Tried this now only the second time. The wheels are so squeaky as it moves around, didn’t/couldn’t empty into the dust retainer-was clogged up with one clump of dog hair. Really didn’t pick up much. I’m disappointed. Will try and return

Vacuums the house like a teenager
I’ve had this thing 4 months. Instructions are Cliff Notes on operations. I haven’t had it vacuum every room. Once the battery hits 50% it goes for a recharge. Will east battery just crisscrossing the house. There is a support tab in the app but this model is not listed. A model with a close MN says something about setting for battery level but I don’t see that. In the “besides that Mrs. Lincoln how was the show “ category the vacuum does a decent job in the areas of the house it goes. The room where the base is I’ll gets the best vacuum. Sometimes it does the other rooms. Hit and miss if the living room and kitchen both get done. 4 bedroom 2 bath 2000 square feet under air.

Connection
Had my vacuum for not even 6 months it lost connection contacted Amazon they were as worthless as always then contacted shark they were worthless as well. They had no idea what’s wrong with it. So have this expensive vacuum than won’t contact to wifi.

Stopped working after 6 months
Stopped working after 5 months and I babied it. It really was such a nice little vacuum until then. I’ve done all the resets and tried to find support online – I’ve taken it apart and put it back together again, but it’s blinking error codes at me. It looks like I’m out the few hundred dollars. If you want a machine to make your life easier, this product ended up costing me so so much time and energy as I’ve tried to fix it, but it’s just very not intuitive, and I’m really sad and disappointed about it.
Laura N. Kellar –
Absolutely not!!!
I bought this product in March 2023. I had an Eufy before that worked pretty good, but didn’t have the self emptying bin. I bought this one based on the positive reviews. I have no idea how in the world these reviews are accurate. It had to be replaced in April because it would consistently stop in the middle of the floor. It has never been that good at cleaning. Always some debris was left behind. I don’t expect it to be 100% perfect, but for double the cost of my other one you would think it would be at least pretty good. Fast forward to November of 2023, I keep getting an error code that there was debris on the bottom (error code 2 I believe). I clean the machine at least once a week and I didn’t see anything. I then called their customer service. I had to do a video call so they could watch the machine. After that, the representative advises that it is a problem with the brush. She said that it costs $21.99 plus shipping. I about lost it. 7 months after I bought the machine the roller breaks and they want me to pay for it. It has a “limited” 1 year warranty. Make sure you focus on the limited. She said the warranty covers the machine and not the parts. After advising that I would be going on social media to share this story, they suddenly agreed to send it to me free of charge. BTW, my wife also has a shark hair dryer and stopped using it because it will randomly not work. Never again will I buy a shark product and I advise strongly that you don’t either.

I purchased one for myself and loved it so much I purchased one for my daughter in law for Christmas.
Jan E Alford –
poor quality, doesn’t last.
This machine did not last more than a year and a half. It broke down and no longer works. My son took it to a vacuum repair center and was told that it would cost more to repair than it was worth. For a $600.00 vacuum it should have lasted several years. Very disappointing!
