Under the Microscope: Evaluating the Product’s Pluses and Minuses
What do the stars speak of?
Opinions about this product were divided in such a proportion among the buyers.
I’ve had this just for a day, but I know this robot is going to surpass my S9+. I have a J6+ in my office and it’s NEVER gotten stuck in 6 months of ownership. Its dodged cords, dog toys and blankets that have fallen on the floor. This robot has been doing the same, the suction is like my S9, however the side brush doesn’t get crushed like the S9 did on carpet. Mapping my house used to take 3 hours on the S9, with this robot it did it in half that. The method for mapping has changed and it speeds it up. The map is accurate, LIDAR wasn’t needed. It picks up all my dog hair and sand from when I visit the beach. I bought it for $599 early black friday deal Nov 2023.
I got this to replace my Roomba I have had for years It still works great but it is very loud and has no obstacle detection at all I just got a puppy so that is important to me After doing some research I decided to go for the top of the line J Right off the bat it had problems It leaves the base and stops for over a minute then starts again for a while then wants the bin emptied Its brand new and has never run nothing is in the bin Once I got it to run for a while after several time of restarting it from the base it started to map my house I went into a few rooms fine most it did about half then left never to return Nothing I could figure out would make it map or even try to enter the unmapped part of my house I googled this problem and found lots of people complaining about the same thing with the J The only answer was keep running it and hope it smartens up or wait for a update at some point I’m not paying what I paid for this

Would Not Recommend
Purchased this as a replacement to our almost 3 year old i6+ and that was a big mistake. It won’t run its scheduled jobs over 50% of the time, and when you try to start it manually in the app, you have to do so at least twice before it does the job you asked it to. We have tried remapping it, changing some settings, etc. to try and fix the problem and it doesn’t make any difference. We haven’t even had it for a month and it’s had more issues than our old roomba had in 3 years. If I could go back in time, I would never have purchased this vacuum.

Very used vacuum!!
Very dissapointed!!! This was a belated Christmas gift for my sister. It was supposed to be a brand new iRobot j9. What showed up was a very used and dirty vacuum! In the process of returning. Funny, I had to give one star to submit my review. Don’t think that star is deserved!

not what you’d expect
Ran it only 3 times and decided to return immediately. We did the mapping run and let it clean the house the day after the mapping. It took 4+ hours to clean a <1000 sqft area on day one. On the second run it got lost and couldn't find the base after running for couple of hours. I had to cancel the run and restart it which caused it to restart from the beginning. On the third run, it stopped in the middle of the room next to a furniture and the app said that the bumper got stuck and we had to tap it to put it back. I tried a few gentle taps but couldn't put the thing back in and immediately decided to return it in that state. I don't want to break the thing and get it to a non-returnable condition. It occasionally got stuck on the T trims between flooring and we had to tap it gently to get it going. This experience is nothing you would expect from a $1000+ product.

Does not mop. Customer service is bad
The brand new Roomba J9+ does not actually mop nor dispense any liquid. Have spent hours on the phone with Roomba customer support. Very little help. I’d be better off just returning it and getting my money back. Very disappointed after spending well over $1,000. Roomba, you can do better.

Roomba will not honor warranty because not authorized seller.
Purchased Nov. 4th just over 2 months ago. Roomba stopped working with error 26. Called Roomba and it was determined the Roomba needs to be returned for repair. However I found out Roomba will not replace or repair Roomba because I purchased the Roomba from an unauthorized seller.

Could have been better – needs babysitting
Good vaccum and mop concept – when you can make it work ! J9+ combo is a good idea but not as reliable as the previous Roomba. It got stuck initially beneath a sofa – 1st day – had to extract it. And then the base / dock stopped working multiple times – The app says it can’t connect – has a communication problem. Had to reboot the base / dock multiple times by unplugging. And then needed to reboot Roomba multiple times. And the battery does not charge properly – had to take it out and put Roomba j9+ back many times. In short – Needs lots of babysitting! This was not the case with my prior 2 Roomba (i7+ with base and Roomba 980) – both of them just do the job. I don’t have the heart to try out another brand yet. Am gonna return this J9+ combo – I would wait for them to improve and have a more reliable combo version before purchasing again.

Mapping works
I had heard that the mapping for the Roomba wasn’t as precise as some of the others however, I am very pleased with the mapping. The only complaint is, it is hard to figure out where the no clean zones need to be on the map and therefore it does get stuck under some of the furniture. Overall very pleased.

Does exactly what it says it will!
I have had my share of robot vacuums/mops and took a leap of faith on this one and man!! It is the real deal! Well worth the money! Doesn’t eliminate human vacuuming or mopping entirely but now I only have to do it once a month or so!! Love this iRobot!

Love this vaccum
You would never know I had a huge, heavily shedding dog!

Would be great if it worked and didn’t destroy my rugs.
I was excited for this high-end purchase. I live in less than 2000 sq feet of space, all on one level, with 3 large area rugs in 3 different rooms, the rest hardwood flooring. She worked great for the first few times, then started leaving balls of dirt everywhere she went. She also seriously damaged one of my area rugs. The last time I ran her, changed the filter, cleaned her up and she didn’t vacuum up anything. The floors were dirtier when she finished and I had to break out the vacuum and do it myself. I would like to return, but it is past the 30 day return feature. I do not recommend buying this product. I also paid the $900 full price and not the price it is listed at now. Very disappointed.

Makes life with dogs so much easier!
This has been a great addition to our house. We can run it in the bedroom in the morning as we are getting ready, and then the rest of the house in the afternoon when we get home from work. It has picked the dog hair amazingly. As it travels and vacuums, it will take pictures of obstacles for you to review. You can set areas within a room that you do not want it to run and it will skip those areas.

Stopped working one month in
I absolutely loved the roomba, it mapped my house, cleaned where I asked it to, emptied itself, until… it stopped working. One month in, it claimed there is something in its path when there wasn’t anything close to it. I tried to fix it, move things around, move its base, nothing worked. I called customer support, they couldn’t help and asked that I send it in for repair. Since it was still within the return period, customer support suggested that I return it and get a new one instead of repairing it. I will buy another one and give it another try, but bummed that this happened so quickly! My last roomba from 10+ years ago still works perfectly.

A Necessary Item
So I bought the 7 series towards the beginning of the year from QVC. I had 30 days to return it. I’s just me and I couldn’t justify spending that much for a vacuum and so send it back. Since then, I’ve vacuumed but no where like the 7 series did. So, I bought this model. It is smarter than my previous one and it does a super job. Now after being without one for a little while, my purchase is definitely justified. The bronze color is really nice. I keep the suction on heavy, verses light or medium. After mapping, it cleaned my whole place, with 1/4 of battery left (heavy suction). And this one goes over any rug and does avoid cords. All in all, I’m glad it all happened the way it does. At the end, I got one of the latest versions. Wonderful purchase!!

There is no technical support by phone or web.
I called technical support and was connected with a person who could not speak English well and knew nothing about the product. I also sent an email about the issues weeks ago, and I never received a response. The unit will not pick up dog hair, dirt or clean well at all. It tries to eat the base it came with regularly. Erratic in all operations and takes 8 hours to clean whereas my old iRobot 600 series does it perfectly in less than 2. Which of course is the reason I purchased it. I have to clean the 600 daily.

No real improvement from 3 generations ago
I’ve had FOUR different iRobot models. This one simply Looks different. Light on the front might help the camera but it can’t find its way home and often just gives up and you have to play hide and seek. Same brushes and vacuum system as earlier models. Still gets clogged just like the i7 and it’s actually worse- it can’t get a proper clean out from the home base. Has to be manually emptied and just does a poor to mediocre job… until it clogs then it does NOTHING but push dirt and dust and until you manually take it all apart and discover the system jammed with dog fur and dust – it won’t complain or warn you it isn’t working right. Returned it to Amazon for a refund.

Not what I was expecting. My Shark was far better
I had high expectations for this irobot and have been very disappointed. I have yet to be able to set it and leave the house and it complete the job. Suction has not lived up to what was advertised. Skips areas, just not the machine I thought it would be. VERY DISAPPOINTED!

Broke in a week
The media could not be loaded. First robot vacuum, suppost to be the “best.” Well, it was good for about the first week, quiet and seemed to do a good job cleaning. Now it makes a very loud buzzing noise when the vacuum is on, sometime makes a clunk and the vacuum doesnt even start, then i get a “check filter” error (filter is clear). Couple times now, it has left the base does nothing, turns around and goes back on the base and says “job complete” and it did nothing. Im going to return for replacement, hopefully #2 will be better!

Works great
Just what I needed. I have 2 dogs and I hated having to vacuum my life away. This works great. I might have to get another one for upstairs.

My Little R2D2
I bought the j9+ based on all the reviews I was able to find and also that the previous s9 model was no longer available. The setup was super easy as long as one is comfortable using your phone’s app to handle all the tasks. The initial mapping was very cool to watch. If you’re a tech nerd, you’ll love trying to figure out how the algorithms are working to navigate the furniture, walls, entry ways, etc. In about 40 minutes R2D2 mapped out my first floor very accurately and was able to work it’s way around the jungle of chair legs at the dining room table. It took a while, but it managed! After the initial mapping run, it went right back to it’s base and started charging automatically. Next was the actual vacuum run, but before that we decided to put a “no fly zone” around the Christmas tree and blanket around it. The app easily let me set up a 5×4 square which I placed in the map of the house – which was very cool, and pressed the “Vacuum Everything” button on my app. It was remarkable how R2D2 started in the room with the most dog hair and then proceeded to follow it’s map throughout the house. The suction on the wood floors was excellent, and I was impressed when it rolled over the few throw rungs we have, I could hear it kick into a higher gear because it recognized the carpet. Our black lab leaves plenty of hair around on our light colored floors which made it easier to see that R2D2 was doing a great job. During the first mapping, I kept all the bedroom doors closed off the main hall. While it did the first vacuum I forgot the master bedroom door was open. It noticed the new opening, but did not enter the room. I took this as a new mapping run I would need to perform, but I was amazed when it completed the entire house, paused in the living room for about 10 seconds, and then proceeded back to the new opening it discovered previously. It recalled it found a new opening but did not disrupts it’s current task – it finished and then returned back. We’ve only run it two times, but already we discovered that it remembered the master badroom, added it to the routine and completed the room before returning back to base. It also updated the map in the app and asked me about the new room and what to name it. I was also able to place the new boundaries for the entrance to the bedroom and master bath (which it also found while exploring). The app also shows pictures of obstacles R2D2 came in contact with during it’s journey. A wire under the curio cabinet was captured in a crystal clear picture taken by R2D2 and sent to the app for me to decide whether this should be considered a permanent obstacle, or something which I could remove and it could continue working in this space next time. I simply moved the wire closer to the wall, let the app know it was taken care of, and we’ll see how R2 does with it next time. I love this robot… I am super impressed by the effectiveness of the vacuum, the ease of the app, and how simple it was to set up. I have seen other reviews about noise, and speed, but it’s no where near as loud as our Shark standup (which is a beast) and regarding the time, I set and forget. So far I have not had to come to it’s rescue, but we also don’t have a lot of things laying around on the floor which I guess would complicate things. For about 500 sq feet, the app tells me it’s taking 90 minutes. No where close to fast, but I am writing this review while R2 is taking care of the floors! Very happy and I’ll come back in a few months with an update….

My Savior
I will say labeling the map was a little tricky, but once that was done I just tell it which rooms I want vacuumed and when, & it does a great job. I love how it empties itself. I didn’t know you had to buy extra vacuum bags once the 2 it comes with were full, but that’s because this was a new Roomba for me.

The best vacuum you can buy
We replaced our I7 Roomba vacuum after about 6 years with this new version. Excellent mapping and precise cleaning. Outstanding!!

The best of the best
Yes, Roomba is the best and the j9+ is the best Roomba. It is fairly quiet. Once you change the settings in the app, it will not bump into baseboards or furniture. I’m thrilled with this purchase.

worth getting the best

R. Morrell –
pretty good
I went from a “dumb” Roomba to this. It is certainly a step up. The rollers are better than the brushes, and the mapping feature is impressive. I do not like the bags, and would prefer to dump it myself instead, and eventually hope to figure out how to disable the emptying feature.

10 years later and Roombas still suck
I want to love Roombas and other robot vacuums. This is basically the best they offer. Yet it’s pretty terrible. Watching it do its thing makes it clear: it’s very primitive still. The little spinning brush on the front right still, since my last roomba from 2013, behaves exactly the same: Just throws dust around the room in front of the vacuum. The app just wastes lots of your time asking you to label images and clean dust bins. You still need to get out your regular vacuum and vacuum, because corners of the room are still dusty, the vacuum’s ramp/charging dock is dirty, and the thing really hardly cleans up anything at all. Save your money and time and just don’t buy this product.
Ed Fishel –
Great vacuum
The only thing better is a person and a traditional vacuum. My floors are mostly wood and some tile and a few rugs over the wood/tile, and this vacuum does a great job on this floor. The one thing this vacuum does not do is move the furniture so it can vacuum underneath.

The J9+ is what Robot Vacuums were always meant to be.
We’ve owned several robot vacuums over the years and they all ended up being a disappointment and I swore I would never get one again until they figured out how to actually navigate our home. The machine vision, mapping, and intelligence of the J9 completely solved every problem we’ve ever had with these robots. It’s eery how smart it is and how perfectly it navigates our home. It’s like we are living in the future. The fact that it works with Alexa is the absolute cherry on top of this delicious sunday.

I-7 versus J-9
I’ve had an I-7 since fall 2021. While I’m pleased overall with its cleaning, there are just some things it can’t do very well. Specifically, vacuum the hardwood floor along the edges of higher-pile Persian carpets or vacuum up the one leaf my dog dragged in that’s sitting in the middle of a large area rug. I was optimistic the new j-9 would vacuum in a more orderly pattern and thus be likely to get the whole carpet clean in one go. Unfortunately mine does not appear to work in an orderly pattern so I still need to send it out 2-3x to feel like the whole floor is clean. But….. it has much more powerful suction than my 3 year old i-7 and is doing a really great job with the pet hair, dander, dust, leaves and random litterbox litter that gets deposited throughout the house. Mapping functionality is much improved and the software is better each update. Overall I’m delighted with the j-9 and the cleanliness of my floors and rugs. The old i-7 is now moved to another floor of my house with less rugs to contend with and continues to be a slow and steady workhorse. * the photo shows what was in the j-9 vacuum bag after one full run of the house. So much pet hair, plant debris and litter. I’m both disgusted and impressed.

Love it
I had purchased the 645 a couple of years ago. It is still working. I like the J9+ a lot more. It does a better cleaning job and does not get “stuck” or tangled in the power cords like the first one did. Love the self emptying feature. So far it finds it way home. It does make more noise.

A real workhorse
Third time is the charm. We had two prior roomba type vacuums, and had to finally upgrade to this one. A real workhorse. Relatively quiet, great suction, auto-empty (that actually works), and excellent at avoiding obstacles. A bit on the expensive side, but so worth it.
Jill Murphy –
Often cannot complete a cleaning job (stuck, docks wrong, gets lost, etc.)
Keeps my floors cleaner than they were before since I run it 5 days a week, but it is rare for it to complete a cleaning job. About half the time it gets stuck on something, falls off the side of the base, gets lost and runs out of battery, or just randomly stops in an area and ends the cleaning job prematurely. Sometimes it will clean and get back to its base but doesn’t clean the entire area. About 15-20% of the time it actually finishes an entire job successfully. I have two of these, one for my main floor and one for upstairs. Both have the same problem.

Works Great and Quieter Than Thought
Some comments left bad reviews, but they did just release a software update. It works nicely. It pairs with Alexa perfectly. The dogs are used to it by now and just sleep through it. It’s really great. I love the zones it creates and allows you to “ban.”

What in the world!!!!
I don’t know if we got a bad one or what! This is really really really bad! I am honestly in shock! It got stuck on a heating and AC duct! That’s the last straw! Thought we’d upgrade from a different robot vacuum half the price and I’m glad we kept that one around because this one is unbelievable! Bad all the way around! Please make a better product. This one is not worth the hype by any means. Also not worth the price tag. Thank god for amazons return policy! Giving it 2 stars overall. It’s better than the $180 robot vacs, but not by much! There’s a brand out there that is around $349 and does an even better job than this one. I’d say their name, but that would be in poor taste! Maybe watch the movie jaws a few times and you’ll figure out the brand.

Dead on arrival – $600 piece of garbage
Been an enthusiastic Roomba user since 2004. Set up the new j9+ according to instructions, but the unit wouldn’t pair or connect to the app. Had a spinning multicolored light on the button. There was no documentation provided to troubleshoot the spinning light, either in the package or in the app itself. I did a hard reset by holding down the button for ~20 seconds and was able to successfully connect to the j9+. Left it on its charging base all night, properly positioned, plugged in, but when I got up this morning and tried to use it for the first time, the message is “Roomba’s battery is too low to start.” so it’s garbage. Big, heavy, expensive garbage that I must now rebox and lug to the UPS store. Super disappointed.

Highly recommend the J9+
User replaceable parts (rollers, brush, filter, and bags) are interchangeable with many of the previous models. Cleans much better than the S7+ it replaced, and runs longer on a charge. It parks better (indents for the wheels). It does require a two handed carry. It has only one button so read the instructions to figure out how to do all the things you used to do with three buttons – with only one. Cleaning is to be done with only a clean dry cloth.

excellent
100x better than the Shark we had. The shark just went were ever it wanted to, This thing is pretty accurate and does a great job. Mapping takes forever and it can get pretty loud but great machine.
Jason –
I love this thing but initial setup was a PITA.
I upgraded to this from the J7. It definitely has more suction, but as a result, the filter gets more debris clogged up in it and requires more maintenance. Luckily I have an air tank and I just blow it out every few days. It’s louder than the J7 as well. Both the J7 and J9 wouldn’t connect to my Google Pixel 7 pro via Bluetooth. I almost sent it back. Luckily the J7 would connect to my galaxy S8. The J9 wouldn’t connect to that either though. Customer service wasn’t any help either. After much trial and error, I had to trick the app by turning off Bluetooth while it was attempting to connect to get the app to prompt me to connect via wifi on my pixel which finally worked. After initial setup, it works flawlessly.

Has trouble emptying cat liter from the bin into the bag
The vacuum has been great. It’s good at picking up dirt. The object avoidance feature works well. At the end of the cleaning run, it provides pictures of what it avoided (see attached pictures of the cat and cat toy) which is neat. My daughter has long hair and that does tend to get wrapped around the wheels. I just have to make sure to pull it out after each use. My only real issue deals with cat litter. It vacuums it up fine, but it has an issue emptying it. When it’s time for it to empty it’s bin into the bag, the majority of the cat litter stays in the bin. I have to empty the cat litter manually after it’s emptied everything else into the bag.

Poor Cleaning
The Suction power seems to be fine, its that fact that the brush/rollers used are rather useless at picking up dust, dirt and hair, Even after its done cleaning it almost appears as if it did really do much to my floor, I think they really need to redo the roller brush.

No improvement over j7+
I was hoping for a slight improvement over the j7+ but it almost seems to have taken a step back

I LOVE IT!
The media could not be loaded. This little robot has got to be one of the best purchases I’ve made in a while! MO (yes, I named it) was super easy to set up and it mapped my whole house out in about an hour. It does an extremely good job vacuuming up pet hair and avoiding any obstacles in its way. My only advice is to make sure that there is no place in your house it can get stuck. During its very first run, it got caught underneath the door to my refrigerator and suffered a couple of scratches. Nothing major or anything, but I’m a little sad seeing my new robot suffer damage during its very first run. I’ve since blocked off part of the fridge. Overall I’m extremely happy with MO, and look forward to having a vacuum helper for years to come!

A succesor to my S9

Error 2 – Brushes Need Cleaning error on Carpet.
Stay away from this Robot Vacuum Cleaner. App configuration was easy. Nothing was easy outside of that. Robot was setup upstairs with medium pile carpeted floors. Did not complete the map on the first run. Took couple of attempts to finish. Never managed to complete a full cleaning due to above error. Error 2 shows up after running for a minute. Not acceptable at this price point. Robot also stopped couple of times when it came close to stairs. Did not fall, but was close and could not recover. Had to move it to a different location to get it going again. Never managed to get a full cleaning cycle completed with this robot.

Pet and Human hair – Review against my Shark Upright.,,
Ran the Roomba J9+ around my house twice and then ran my Shark upright. The Roomba J9 picked up about 1/2 of the dog and human hair. Roomba moves pretty fast on high suction setting and picks up less than half of the dirt too. Kinda sad…

So far so good.
I’ve had the j9+ for a couple of months now. So far it has worked flawlessly. It does a much better job than my i3 we also have, and it’s way faster.

I guess it doesn’t like dusty rooms?
Almost a week into using this and I have to do most of the emptying, and clean the dust bin so that it doesn’t think it is permanent full. It works sometimes, but when it hits a heavy patch of dirt this happens. I hope that once it gets to a certain level of “daily clean” that it will work better. Also, simple things seem to jam up the brushes. A screw, a button, and a bit of string have done it so far. I manually clear it and it works again.

Just moves dirt around
It just moves dirt around the house and does not suck up anything. Complete waist of $ and iRobot basically said there’s nothing they can do for me.

I do not want to beta test your unfinished product.
I got this to replace my 980 Roomba I have had for years. It still works great but it is very loud and has no obstacle detection at all. I just got a puppy so that is important to me. After doing some research I decided to go for the top of the line J9+. Right off the bat it had problems. It leaves the base and stops for over a minute, then starts again for a while, then wants the bin emptied. Its brand new and has never run, nothing is in the bin. Once I got it to run for a while after several time of restarting it from the base it started to map my house. I went into a few rooms fine, most it did about half then left never to return. Nothing I could figure out would make it map or even try to enter the unmapped part of my house. I googled this problem and found lots of people complaining about the same thing with the J7. The only answer was keep running it and hope it smartens up or wait for a update at some point. I’m not paying what I paid for this half baked product to do free beta testing. The app is terrible also, not user friendly, very limited and just plane confusing. Oh and the obstacle detection doesn’t work, it hits walls hard, it runs right into and pushes my dogs toys all over, it runs over peoples feet. ect… Very disappointed in this product so it is going back.
