How Does the XTOOL D7 Bidirectional Scan Tool 2024: ECU Coding, Active Tests, All System, Android 10, 3-Year Updates Stand Under the Microscope? Evaluating Its Pluses and Minuses
The XTOOL D7 is a multifunctional diagnostic tool that’s easy to use and extremely helpful for car repairs. David Woodard mentioned that it helped him “add additional keys and key fobs to multiple vehicles” and even diagnose complex issues like a “bad wheel bearing sensor.” He also appreciated the tool’s ability to “calibrate the replacement air blend door actuator,” making it invaluable for various automotive needs.
The tool is cost-effective and pays for itself over time. Andre Thompson found it particularly useful for programming new keys on his 2015 Mustang, noting that it “pretty much paid for itself compared to going to a locksmith or dealer.” The tool allows users to save money on diagnostics and repairs while providing a long-term solution for multiple vehicles.
It’s versatile and suitable for a wide range of vehicles. Travis and Kylee, who consider themselves “advanced home mechanics,” find the scanner perfect for family use. The XTOOL D7 offers “value per dollar” with its extensive range of functions, making it a must-have tool for anyone looking to handle their own car diagnostics and repairs.
The XTOOL D7 has some software limitations and doesn’t cover all functions for all vehicles. Carlton M. Witt expressed disappointment that it couldn’t “perform an ABS bleed on a 1997 Chevrolet K2500 4×4,” a feature he expected from a bidirectional scanner. Despite the tool’s overall capabilities, it falls short in some specific diagnostic functions, making it less reliable for older or less common vehicles.
The tool has battery and durability issues that affect long-term use. Lance Stowe reported that after using it only three times, the “battery was completely dead” and wouldn’t charge. He also mentioned getting “the run around” when trying to return it, highlighting potential concerns with the product’s longevity and customer service experience.
The XTOOL D7 is a highly functional and versatile diagnostic tool that offers a wide range of features to help users diagnose and repair their vehicles. It’s especially useful for programming keys and diagnosing complex issues, providing significant value for its cost. However, it has some software limitations and potential durability issues that could affect its reliability for long-term use. Overall, it’s a great tool for home mechanics and advanced users but may require caution for more specialized needs.

I waited a couple of years hoping the software will get better on the d6 or the D7 The d6 still has weird software issues that can cause you to mess things up

Complicated, but support is great
I bought this tool specifically for key FOB programming. It’s not very intuitive and I was getting ready to send it back; however, I reached out to technical support before doing so. I worked with Caleigh (technical support) and we worked together for almost two weeks to get a FOB programmed for a 2012 Jeep Wrangler JK and a 2001 Lexus LS 430. Many emails were exchanged during that time. After sending screenshots, we were finally able to get the correct path for FOB programming in both vehicles. It was somewhat frustrating, but Caleigh was diligent in ensuring we finally reached the final solution.

tested on two Subaru Foresters
The main reason to buy XTool D7 was stolen original FOB key from my Subaru Forester Sport 2019. I bought an OEM replacement key and found that it is very difficult to program it locally on Hawaiian Island. The dealership had no programmers and sent me to local key replacement office, which needed two weeks to complete the job. I ordered XTool D7 online which was recommended on YouTube for keys programming. New D7 came with new operating system similar to D7S. The only minor problem that I had was selecting country for automatic detection. My Forester was made in Japan, but still US should be selected for automatic car detection. After that everything was like walk in the park until I discovered that key programming is no longer present on D7. I contacted Support and overnight they “pushed” required feature to my scanner. I delayed the review until I got to Los Angeles where my older Subaru Forester is registered. Everything was easy for auto detection of 2016 car and check everything using auto scan. The only problem was with Sunload Sensor Circuit being low or open (DTC Code B14A1) because my Forester was in garage. I reset that code when car was on the street. Overall, I found XTool D7 quite intuitive tonoperate and I appreciated 3 years of updates at no cost. Online support was very helpful. Definitely 5 stars.

Very Good Bidirectional Scanner
Main reason for buying this was for a transmission job on my Toyota Tundra I wanted to do. You are required to monitor transmission temperature at the end of the job to ensure it’s at the right temperature before draining out excess fluid. This scanner worked great with that and also for many other areas. My friends borrow this often to work on their vehicles as it’s easy to learn and intuitive. Also, the system updates automatically whenever you turn it on so don’t go for long periods because you may have lots to download. (You want all of them.)

Became an expensive brick under warranty and no solutions to make it right from Xtool. 😢
Device was quick after some updates, the device became slower and slower. I have 23gb of free space and use this as a dedicated scan tool for my 2010 GMC Sierra only. I contacted Xtool. They suggested I factory reset the tablet. I did the reset as suggested. After the programs restored and the tablet booted up, I installed the special functions and the GMC diagnostic update and that’s it. D7 is still so slow I can’t use the live data or graphs because they can’t even populate data. I have never even used any other feature other than the xtool diagnostic software. I was going to purchase a Xtool A30M to use with a tablet, but if they can’t make it run on the host tablet they provided with their software, how well can it run on a random tablet and do I really want to buy another device and then have it be a usable tech device. Furthermore when I contacted them, I was and still am well within my warranty period, but instead of offering to provide me a functional unit, I get told to reset it. Then after receiving the same results and sending a email packed with pictures and videos showing the app completely freezing with nothing else running they offer to remotely connect to fiddle with it even though I just factory restored it and presented a mountain of information, pictures and video. I had high hopes but was ultimately let down. I will have to look for a new scan tool because the Xtool D7 just can’t function correctly for live data. I had just replaced my vehicles o2 sensors. The Xtool D7 couldn’t populate the o2 sensor data and just read the same voltage. I could feel this wasn’t the case in the vehicles idle, so I had to go under the truck and use my old oscilloscope to see the voltage fluctuating to know they where working within the proper parameters.

Wanted to like this one
It says you can use it for key programming, and there are many videos of this on youtube, but the actual device does not seem to support this. I have updated the software and contacted the manufacturer but am not getting any response from them. There are also communication issues on some vehicles, as roughly 1/3 of the ones I have tried this on wont even communicate with the vehicle properly, throwing all sorts of communication errors and behaves erratically.

Could not get WIFI connection to work!
I waited for a long time before I made the plunge to purchase a bidirectional scanner because the cost did not justify itself for a DIY home based mechanic with reliable cars. After much reading and lots of positive reviews I finally decided to purchase the D7 scanner. I am an electrical engineer, quite advanced in performing diagnostics so I was not expecting to get tripped up by the WIFI connection as I explain below. The positives: – Well made and extremely well thought out user interface – Logical to use – Covers most vehicles – Extensive diagnostics and special features – Three year updates included…. long term annual upgrade cost is unknown? The challenges: – I could not get the scanner connected to my home WIFI. I contacted XTOOL tech support and went back and forth for over three weeks via email and got no where. I have never had a problem before connecting anything to my WIFI. For some reason I was able to connect the scanner via a hotspot connection from my phone to get updates but this was not a practical long term solution. When I did contact technical support they sent a WIFI trouble shooting guide via email for me to try. When this did not work I had to chase after them for a follow up because I had heard nothing for two weeks. – Battery life – If you leave this device off charge it was stone dead after about a week even if you shut it off after use. – Lots of time invested to try to get the scanner to connect with no success Bottomline: – I wanted to keep this device but lack of a working WiFi connection was a deal breaker so I decided to return the device while my return window was open and hope a better alternative comes along. I would have given it one star but was torn because it really seems like an awesome tool at a great price point.

Great tool for DIY and basic level mechanics
This is a great tool if you work on your own vehicles, are just starting out as a mechanic, or even starting out as a locksmith. I use this to do a few different things on a daily basis, and for the price, it beats others in the same price. I have an OTOfix scanner that claims to do everything the XTOOL can, but the XTOOL extremely outperforms it in the key fob/immobilizer functions. I have had the XTOOL work on newer cars (2015+) and pull security codes that the other one couldn’t. From what I can see, the Xtool seems to be “compatible” and able to read not only more makes and models, but able to read more modules as well. It is also easier to read as far as the commands for walking you through certain procedures. Most of these budget friendly level scanners are not originally coded/created in English, so the translations can sometimes be harder to understand. Overall, I have had way less issues with translations and clear language with the XTOOL scanner compared to other competitors. Their tech support also has way better English skills than other budget friendly brands as well. It’s user interface is very easy to use, so that is a big part of why I believe if you’re just starting out and don’t want to spend more than 500 bucks, this may be your go to. Everything’s easy to navigate, every once in a while I will be slightly annoyed with the speed of the scan tool, but that would most likely be my biggest complaint. Overall i would say it is very solid and gets things done, whether you’re making keys, doing diagnostics and wanting to see specific voltages, temperatures, pressures etc, or even relearning modules such as TPMS or battery maintenance modules in European vehicles. It for me has covered stuff from American made, to Japanese, to Korean, and done everything I’ve asked of it on European cars. I have friends in the business with snap on and Matco scanners that may have a few more functionalities, but as a basic to moderate level mechanic, I have yet to have something I can’t complete with my XTOOL scanner. I also like the size of the XTool. The scanner itself isn’t too large. Some may like a larger screen, but I feel like the Xtool is quite adequately sized while being compact enough too. My Xtool pulls the same codes, does many of the same functions, and recognizes the same cars as their scan tools can for literally 2% of the price of some of theirs. Mobile mechanics, entry level technicians on most euros, entry to moderate level techs for American/japanese/korean makes, independent shops, and most locksmiths will be able to use this tool and all of the functionalities of it with no issue. If you are a higher level technician, especially for diesel or European stuff, I may look to see if there are other options, but other than that this scan tool will be perfect for most!

A lot of scanner for the price
The media could not be loaded. The D7 scanner is a solid device, not a cheap tablet like some others on the market. It has rubber bumpers on the corner to help protect it. I like that it came in a custom fit case that had a space for everything. I just don’t have room in the toolbox for a bunch of loose cables and adapters. I bought this unit as an upgrade to a lower level Xtool to help diagnose an issue with the brake lights constantly being on in our 2012 Jeep Compass. Since it wasn’t a simple issue with just a brake switch, I needed a way to see what the car computer thought was going on. The D7 scanner gave me the live data view to see that the car was reporting that the brake pedal was pressed at all times, even though it wasn’t . Turns out it was an issue with the totally integrated power module under the hood. The scanner was essential in ruling out a short or ground issue by seeing the live sensor data. It also gave us the ability to bleed the brakes using the ABS pump which is something that was on the maintenance schedule. The scanner came nicely packaged and was easy to set up. I created an Xtool account directly from the tablet and it immediately allowed me to download the vehicle definition updates from their online update site. One of the features that I really like is the way it creates a diagnostics report whenever you scan a vehicle and then you can directly email the reports from the tablet. You can customize the reports with a logo and business name if you are running a shop, for me it was just nice to have a PDF to refer to. I tried the scanner on all of my vehicles just to see if it truly was compatible. It auto detected my 2012 Jeep Compass, 2018 Volvo XC90, required a manual input of the VIN for my 2004 Jeep WJ but that is a limitation of that year Jeep since it isn’t coded in the ECU, and failed to detect my brand new 2025 Subaru Outback. I was wondering how it would work on the 2025 since it was a brand new model year, the vehicle has 460 miles on it. The 2025 has a warranty for 3 years so I hope I don’t need to scan it but I was impressed to learn that if I used the OBD II vehicle option on the scanner, it bypassed the auto VIN function and just put me into an OBD II standards based scanner. It was not only able to read the status of fault codes but also gave me the live data which I didn’t expect. Attached is a video that shows the scanner reading and graphing the throttle position as I press the pedal. I don’t have a shop but do take care of all of our vehicles. A dealer will easily charge you more in diagnostic fees than the cost of buying your own scanner. Plus, it gives you the freedom to use it whenever you want.

This thing is definitely worth the money!
Okay, SO you’re a DIYer. You love tinkering with your car, but sometimes it can be a real head-scratcher. That’s where the XTOOL D7 comes in. It’s like having a mechanic’s assistant right there in your garage. This little gadget is super easy to use. Even if you’re not a tech whiz, you’llbe able to figure it out. It’s got a clear screen and simple menus. Plus, it’s got a ton of features. You can read codes, monitor live data, and even do some basic tests yourself. We own 3 cars, a jeep, a land rover, and a volkswagen. All of which have their own set of issues. I’ve used it on everything It’s helped me diagnose problems that I would have never figured out on my own. And it’s saved me a ton of money by helping me avoid unnecessary repairs. If you’re a DIYer who wants to take your car maintenance to the next level, I highly recommend the XTOOL D7. It’s a great investment that will pay for itself in no time. On top of that you can’t go wrong with all the free updates. Plus for the states with emissions, you can check to make sure it will pass inspection. Definitely my favorite scanner to date.

Great deal for a great professional scan tool
The media could not be loaded. The XTOOL D7 2024 Edition is a game-changer for automotive diagnostics. As a professional in the industry, I’ve tried my fair share of scan tools, and this one truly stands out for its blend of functionality, ease of use, and overall value. Whether you’re a professional mechanic or a DIY enthusiast, the D7 is designed to meet a wide range of diagnostic needs. Right out of the box, the XTOOL D7 impresses with its sleek, modern design. The tablet-style format feels solid in hand, with a robust build that can withstand the typical wear and tear of a workshop environment. The 8-inch touch screen is vibrant and responsive, making navigation through menus a breeze. The user interface is intuitive, with a clear layout that even a beginner can quickly get the hang of. It’s easy to locate various functions, which is especially useful when you’re in the middle of a complex diagnostic session and don’t want to waste time fumbling through menus. One of the biggest selling points of the XTOOL D7 2024 Edition is its extensive vehicle coverage. It supports over 80 different car brands, covering models from Europe, Asia, and North America. Whether you’re working on a Honda, BMW, Ford, or a less common brand, the D7 has you covered. It’s particularly effective for those with a mixed fleet or a wide range of customer vehicles, ensuring that you won’t have to keep switching between different scan tools. The XTOOL D7 packs a punch with its wide range of diagnostic functions. It offers the standard OBD2 functions like reading and clearing trouble codes, but it also goes beyond the basics. You get access to advanced features such as bi-directional control (active tests), ECU coding, key programming, and even special functions like oil reset, electronic parking brake (EPB) reset, battery management system (BMS) reset, and more. These features can save you significant time and money, as they allow you to perform complex diagnostics and adjustments that would otherwise require a visit to the dealership. The bi-directional control function is particularly impressive. It allows you to send commands to various vehicle systems to test functionality, such as turning on and off solenoids, relays, and more. This can be a game-changer for troubleshooting issues like faulty actuators or sensor problems, giving you a deeper level of control over the diagnostic process. When it comes to speed and performance, the XTOOL D7 doesn’t disappoint. It’s equipped with a powerful processor and runs on the latest Android platform, which ensures smooth operation and quick responses. Boot-up times are minimal, and the tool can read and display data from the vehicle’s systems quickly. Live data streams are smooth, with minimal lag, making it easier to monitor various parameters in real time during test drives. One of the biggest concerns with any scan tool is keeping it up to date with the latest vehicle models and software enhancements. The XTOOL D7 addresses this with regular software updates, which are easy to download and install. The updates ensure that your scan tool remains compatible with the latest vehicle models and that any bugs or issues are promptly fixed. XTOOL also provides good customer support, with a responsive team ready to assist if you encounter any issues or have questions about using the tool.

High hopes were destroyed in two days of trying to make it do what was promised.
Activating went smooth but after that I was all alone. Asked about why updates didn’t work and their answer was “please contact your dealer to confirm if it can be used in your region”. It’s like a surprise box. I’ll bet it works good on some vehicles but not my 2022 F150. Remote Team Viewer didn’t work. Update would not install. Live data was absent for my vehicle. Many problems which are being ignored by Xtool tech support. Ask a specific question and they answer another question you didn’t ask. Most of the problems could be resolved by a better support page. Good Luck

Tool itself is great!
The tool itself is very handy. It’s read all the cars I’ve used it on and some of the special functions have worked (controlling locks/windows/etc) I’m happy to have upgraded from a normal scanner to this bidirectional scanner. The wifi is handy to email PDF reports. The battery seems to last a pretty decent amount of time. The only reason it isn’t rated higher is their customer service is awful. The cable being left in the plastic carrying case it came with for 3 months seemingly failed, it wouldn’t/couldn’t read anything. CS took a couple weeks to reply back to begin with, said they shipped a replacement cable that I never received and were less than helpful the whole way around. (they wanted me to diagnose the cable was actually bad by testing the pins on the cable) Ultimately I had to just buy another cable myself. Jenny specifically was a bad CS rep.

The new and improved D7!
The scanner is very user friendly, especially after the new user interface and upgraded tablet! I was still using my “old” d7 for about 3 years loved the capabilities but the operating systems were still archaic, very pleased to buy the new just for the user interface and operating system. This tool will do more than most professional softwares and shops can do with multiple different manufacturers! I’ve done everything from programming a new key fob on my 2011 ram to pcm swaps. Just one call to my local locksmith and I would’ve spent the same about for a new fob as I did just buying the new d7 and programming it!! THE TECH SUPPORT is superior to any and all other scan tool companies!

Quit working within the first 6 months
Used 3 times and now wont turn on, screen just blinks for a split split second. Put it on the charger thinking the battery was somehow dead but made no difference. The manufacturer has been useless, no return on emails or phone calls. Typical China garbage.

The media could not be loaded. This is my new go to Scanner tool to use! Its packed with absolutely all the functions that you would ever need to fix or calibrate your vehicle. I had used it on my vehicles and its absolutely phenomenal. Its got a slick design, pretty fast CPU, very responsive upon usage. For the price Xtool has packed lots of technology into it, I highly recommend you try this product. You would not be disappointed! Best 400$ spent hands down.

Not as advertised no IMMO on 2015 Subaru
I saw the reviews and saw video review where the XTOOL D7 had no issues programming IMMO on a 2015 Subaru. I opened the unit and saw that first off the interface was completely different on XTOOL D7 in the video than the unit I purchased. Then I went to find Key Program for IMMO and it was not available on the XTOOL D7 unit I purchased . It did appear on other year , makes and models but not 2015 Subaru . I primarily purchased this unit for the IMMO and not having IMMO resulted in a RETURN. Again the video review of this XTOOL D7 unit had a completely different interface AND did have a complete Menu for Keys . There was a support phone number but it was not available . So I am returning as no IMMO as that was a red flag for me . I will stick with HIGH to MID Range Autel which has full IMMO and has never let me down .

Absolute horrible customer service
I have had this device for 2 years now. It randomly stopped reading cars. I tried to troubleshoot myself and factory reset the device. Once I did that then my device was stuck on the downloading software screen and it wouldn’t proceed any further. I attempted MANY times to get in touch with XTOOL. The issue is, they are not in the United States and don’t have a phone number. They only do chat and take days to reply. They kept telling me to go back to Amazon for assistance. Don’t purchase this. It’s not worth not having access to US BASED customer service. I shouldn’t have to wait up till 2am my time for assistance. This Product is absolute JUNK

XTOOL SCANNER
Did a crankshaft relearn in a 2011 Chevy Malibu. Alot of options. It’s like an $800 scanner for $400

Impressed with capacity but unit failed to charge and battery went dead
Impressed with the units capabilities but it failed to recharge and the battery went dead. Xtool’s support offered little help and referred me to tech support in China. Unit failed just before amazon’s 30 day return window do I send it back without speaking to tech support. Loved the tools abilities by if it had failed outside of Amazon’s return window not sure how Xtools warranty would be handled.

Cannot program keys
One of the big reasons I bought this was to be able to program keys. I guess this newest model no longer supports this feature.

Professional Level Scan Tool
All I have to say is that this scan tool is awesome. I work in a professional shop and at times when I’m in the office one of my techs will need help with a diagnosis. Well that is where this scan tool surprised me. With this model you have the option to remote in to the scan tool and control it from another location. This opens a world of possibilities for many different applications. I could see this being used to train in a classroom setting, offer remote assistance to an everyday person or just help other techs out. All the features I love plus some bonus goodies. Amazing!

Powerful Scan tool by Xtool
This is a $400 scan tool which competes with some $5000 dollar brands. This scan tool paid for it self after one use. Great build quality.

Perfect for DIYers
I’ve owned this tool about a year and it’s served it’s purpose. I’ve used it on 5 different vehicles and have not ran into any issues or unsupported features. This tool is great for a DIYer whose looking for something a little more advanced than your basic code reader. This tool lets me do more detailed diagnostics on a vehicle. A month ago I had an issue with the LCD displaying upside-down. I contacted tech support and they paid for shipping of the unit and returned it 5 days later fixed. It’s great they paid to fix it, although I’m slightly worried this LCD issue is going to happen again…

Excellent tool at an affordable price
This scanner does everything I need it to do for a garage, youtube certified mechanic. Bidirectional actuation of valves, pumps, etc is huge especially when replacing a part and the vehicle requires system to be relearned. Updates and customer services has been great.

Am not a professional is easy to use
I bought this to program new fobs for my subaru. It worked great for that. Shortly after buying my 07 4.2L F150 started to have problems. The codes my truck were spitting out were misleading but it helped alot in figuring out what the problem was.

Product is okay but the customer service is amazing
It does everything it says it does, might have to try a few different route but it will work! Had issues with connecting to vehicles almost a year after purchase *Jenny* have went well and beyond of what I needed from you! Not only the help with the part, the troubleshooting the issue but the little Bluetooth code reader you sent came so fast! I was able to save face with our customers by still being able to scan them and keep them updated with what we had going on meaning(XTOOLONLINE and Brody) figuring out the d7! 10/10. Customer Service support and satisfaction!

Not even close to what I thought
Originally purchased due to high demand for Ford focus dual clutch transmission repairs as the owner of my business, and looking at the price of the school, needing just the bare minimum of by directional to perform the clutch adaptations after repair. I thought this was easy. This operating system is terrible. This is the slowest tablet there is demand just to auto scan is miserable. I will go through and click anything to not auto scan and when I see a code, I will pause auto scan to read the code to set it back down and go eat lunch and come back and then it might be finished. There is no directions on any of the special functions or activations. It’ll tell you conditions have not been met to perform/not supported, but you can fumble your way through and accidentally do a test with not having the whole procedure physically reset UPDATE update never again will I buy anything from this company? I cannot get tech-support for the last week. I have not been able to auto scan to find the vehicle or I can manually enter things in and vent but still will not communicate with 90% of the modules on vehicles I have scanned multiple times. And don’t waste your money or time buying this tool it’s such a tease it gives you everything that you think you have but only for overseas vehicles. Good luck doing anything with an American based company/software. 90% of the time it cannot read the module that even has the error code and or is the problem, the live data is asinine. There is no reason it’s not alphabetical. The units are not compatible with what you even want to see every make and model has a totally different screen of options like one will have a misfire graph and graphics, but you go from a Chevy to a Ford or Chevy doesn’t have any of those options before you can do this, but you can’t see any misfires on dodges it.
