What’s Good, Bad, and Ugly About the Robot Vacuum? An In-Depth Review
The Shark robot vacuum has garnered positive remarks from users who value its time-saving capabilities and its proficiency in cleaning both carpets and hard floors. As one user joyfully stated, “Saves us 112hrs a year! That’s roughly 20 min a day. The orange is worth the squeeze.” This sentiment is echoed by others who highlight the vacuum’s impressive mapping technology, which allows users to instruct the device to clean specific rooms via their phone. The convenience offered by the vacuum’s self-emptying feature is frequently praised, as it can handle pet hair effectively, with one user affirming, “This vacuum is awesome. We have two Spaniels and the wife has extremely curly red hair. This vacuum does its job and then some.”
In terms of reliability, there are reports of the Shark vacuum performing exceptionally for several months without any significant issues. Its scheduling functionality, when operating correctly, enables users to automate their cleaning routines, providing a seamless and hands-off experience. The machine’s performance is considered comparable to higher-priced alternatives, as one user acknowledges, “does the hard floors right and as good as the ones that cost twice as much.”
Despite its advantages, the Shark robot vacuum also faces considerable criticism. A recurring theme in the negative reviews is the vacuum’s longevity, with multiple users experiencing breakdowns within a year. One user expressed frustration, stating, “Only Lasted 8 Months,” while another added, “Broke in a Couple of Months.” Technical issues such as error messages regarding the IR disc and wheel malfunctions have been reported, leading to dissatisfaction with the device’s durability and quality assurance.
The accompanying app has been a source of discontent, with users citing a lack of basic functionality like matrix cleaning and random activation at odd hours despite scheduled times and “do not disturb” settings. Customer service responses have been found wanting, with suggestions like factory resets failing to resolve the issues permanently.
The product’s handling of pet hair has also been critiqued. One user found the model not suitable for pet hair, experiencing frequent clogging, and feeling that the money spent was wasted. Additionally, the machine’s inability to clean without supervision has led to increased user intervention, negating the purpose of an autonomous vacuum. The sentiment is summed up by a user’s comment, “Refuses to clean the room I send it to,” indicating problems with the vacuum’s smart features.
Connectivity and mapping issues plague some units, with the vacuum either cleaning the same area repeatedly or struggling to navigate around the home effectively. This has been compounded by the apparent lack of firmware updates or responsive technical support to address such glitches. As one user lamented, “It’s a brick because the app can’t connect,” highlighting the frustration felt when the device fails to meet expectations.
The stars speak of…
Opinions about this product were divided in such a proportion among the buyers.
This robot is working great for our family home so far. It has mapped the main floor perfectly. Each day it runs it gets better and better at getting every inch of the room area. We have used it for 1 week daily and each day I am surprised on how much pet hair and dust it picks up. I would recommend this product for this price range. Worth the money.
Disappointed. Got this to replace my iRobot Roomba. My Roomba picked up all the dog hair feom my carpet. This Shark just goes over the top of it and leaves the hair. This may be fire for houses with no carpet, but it sure isn’t as good as the iRobot. Looks like this will be going back.

Great Vacuum!
The media could not be loaded. I’m so impressed! Have seen these for years! Resisting the urge to purchase and finally broke down when I got this one 50% off. Wish I had done it sooner. Some have said it is loud. To me, it isn’t. I can hear my TV over it but I turned the sound down so you could actually hear it. Unboxed and within 10 minutes I was set up. I have StarLink Internet and live out in the country. Your internet service may be the reason for some having issues during WiFi connect. I did let it charge a good 8 hours before trying to connect to my phone and then it wasn’t until a couple days later I did the “mapping”. The video I showed was it doing that procedure. This thing is AMAZING. Within 25 minutes the areas I wanted mapped were done! It returned to the dock and emptied out the empty out procedure is a little louder but I expected that. I didn’t initially map each bedroom. I closed the door to any areas I didn’t want mapped. We actually have a pretty high threshold between the kitchen and living area but it made it over no problem!! If you have been waiting, DON’T! We don’t have children at home and only 1 small chihuahua dog so it doesn’t get too dirty but getting older I just don’t have the energy for cleaning every few days anymore! So glad I purchased this!

Check your Shark robot’s model number upon receipt!
While I do like this Shark Robot, it isn’t what I ordered. It superficially looks the same as the one pictured in Amazon’s listing, but at least one feature is different (one side brush, not two); and, there may be other differences that I have not discovered. The model number for my robot is not RV2001AE, but another model that is not listed in Shark’s current catalog. Otherwise, it works fine, and the self-empty feature is handy. For you prospective buyers, bear in mind that the “self-cleaning” brush roll is that IF there isn’t a lot of human and/or pet hair on your floors and carpets — you WILL need manually clean the brush from time to time. (Fortunately, Shark has designed the brush for easy, tool-less removal.). Also, before first use, thoroughly vacuum all floors and carpets manually. The Sharp app is OK, but its mapping is somewhat crude (but works). Suction is good, battery life acceptable, the self docking-and-recharge feature is important and useful. Finally, this model Sharp Robot is surprisingly quiet (I cannot tell any difference, noise-wise, berween “eco” and “normal” mode, although battery life is noticeably longer in “eco”). Overall, a good starter smart robot vac.

Love this product, really does a good job and not very loud

Poor vacuum
It’s always broken. It’s the worst shark I have had. I’m constantly working on it. At some point I may as well just vacuum

Be ready to babysit
I gave this product a second chance after trying a stimulus model 5 years ago and although this isn’t a perfect design (I get it) we clear everything off the floor and it still somehow gets trapped under my sons bed which we tell it not to do every single time, somehow finds things (a freaking yoyo!?) And constantly just randomly dies. I really wanted this product to work but it’s more of a headache and nuisance than anything.
Cari B –
Efficient and powerful
Excellent coverage and good value. Very pleased with this so far! The map is super accurate and I can start it from work or in the car on the way home! App is super easy to use

Waste of Money
I’ve been so disappointed in this vacuum. I’ve had it just over a year now and it no longer works. When it turns on, I get an error message that the side brushes are jammed. I purchased and replaced the brushes, but they still don’t spin. When it was working, it took hours to vacuum my small ranch home, even w/two rooms closed off. It bumps into furniture and has damaged furniture and the wood trim in my home. Honestly, I’m halfway glad it stopped working so I don’t have to deal with it anymore. It would run for a while, then return to the dock to recharge, I would think it’d be done, then during lunch or dinner when I had guests, here it’d come again after what seemed like hours of being on the dock! Also, I’d have to take up several rugs each time I run it because it’d get the side brushes tangled in them or sucked up inside the machine. The harsh bumping of the furniture and wood trim around my home was my biggest issue. I put new brushes on it and it just keeps stopping after a few seconds, saying the brushes are stuck, but there is nothing sticking in them, they just won’t turn. Now I need to get eveythibg repaired and painted and look for a new one. Save your money and look at another brand. I’ve had a couple of roombas that were okay, but I keep thinking surely there’s something better available. Fingers crossed!

Worth Every Penny!
I purchased this vacuum after my son and two large (shedding) dogs moved in with me. I had mentioned all the dog hair to a friend and she suggested I look at a robot vacuum. I currently own a Shark upright vacuum and have been very happy with it so after reading reviews I felt good about this choice. It arrived quickly and was easy to set up. I like that it links to an app on my phone. I have been running it M-W-F and using my upright on the weekend. I am extremely impressed with the amount of hair/dust it picks up. I have both carpet and linoleum in my home and it does a great job with both. The only downside I have identified is the battery has a somewhat short life. I have 3 bedrooms, two bathrooms and an open living room/kitchen and it takes a little over an hour and a half to complete. It does need to recharge before getting through all the rooms. Not a big deal to me, it resumes once the battery has been charged. So far, it’s great and I wish I’d purchased it sooner.

Nothing but problems. Get a Roomba instead.
I’ve had this Shark for about a year. It never had operated like stated. This is my second one because the first one I had just stopped working. They did send me a replacement which is the one I’m reviewing. I have a German Shepard and it never cleans up the hair on the rug or in the area cleaned (around 500 sq ft). Even on the heavy duty setting. It regularly has hair jammed in it that I have to clear. It does vacuum but regularly doesn’t complete the job. It will vacuum the kitchen well but when it gets to the living room it only does part of it. It then will go back to randomly vacuum other areas it had already done but won’t vacuum new spots. I’ve reset/ remapped multiple times. It will also go into one no-go area I set up and gets stuck. The worst of it is that my old dog had a big poop accident overnight. The Shark ran right into it, turned around and around it in, then spread poop over part of house. It finally got stuck on the carpet when I found it. I thought this one would avoid that but poop is all over it. I had an older Roomba and I started using that without any issues. It doesn’t self dump but I will deal with it. It very rarely gets stuck and will vacuum the whole area. Using the older Roomba versus the new Shark is night and day between performance. It’s worth the money for the Roobma.

Vacuum returns to docking station at 40% for no reason.
I wish I knew why this thing works so badly. I started it at 100%, within 45 minutes it was down to 40%, then it returned to docking station. It unloaded its material which was hardly anything. Then it returned to the room it had just left. WHY did it go back to the dock at all? It goes over spots more then once. It does not vacuum the rooms efficiently. It wastes time going around objects and then incorrectly continuing on its path. It incorrectly scanned a room and doesn’t vacuum it properly. I will have it reexplore the house and if it doesnt work better its going back. Also after it scanned the house you are unable to select a room to its exact dimensions, you can only select a square and hover over the section you want cleaned which usually means your cleaning parts of the another room????

Product stopped working after 1.5 years
Product stopped working out of the blue there is a bumper error and customer service wasn’t helpful. They offered a 30% discount on a new unit saying the old unit needs to be replaced. You can see from the picture that the old unit has no issues. Not going with shark brand again totally disappointed

Lasted long enough for the warranty to expire
When it worked, it worked great. The robot did a great job cleaning the hard wood floors. It is short enough to get under furniture which was very helpful. Unfortunately, it lasted only a year and a half. One of the side brushes stopped working. After a thorough cleaning and a call to Shark tech support, the brush motor is what failed. And that is covered by the 1 year limited warranty. Helpful & professional tech support, I will say that. He did offer me a discount on a replacement unit, so that’s something.

won’t charge
It’s been plugged in for days and allegedly charging. It won’t get off it’s base after pressing the clean button for 5-7 seconds. She’s somewhere in there because she says hello. But that’s all I get for 299 bucks. She won’t leave the docking station and keeps flashing the battery charge light even though it’s been charging for days! I’m sending it back and going back to my Dyson.

It does not do mopping
I currently bought this product thinking it did mopping and vacuuming as it said in the video of the product. When it arrived I decided tu set it up and to my surprise it only vacuumed. Not what I expected

Game changer for busy moms
Very impressed! We have only had this vacuum for a few days but I can already tell that it is going to help me out a lot. It accurately mapped my home within the first 45 minutes of turning it on and connecting to WiFi. We went to the gym for two hours and I ran the vacuum while we were out and when I came home, I was blown away with how clean it got our floors. I Scheduled it to run the following morning at 5 AM through the app and it worked perfectly. I keep the fan in my bedroom on full blast while we sleep and the sound of the fan covered the sound of the vacuum. The noise did not disturb anyone while we were sleeping. It does not pick up the dust that can sometimes get trapped in corners, but that is not a big deal to me as I will still use my regular vacuum periodically. My cat is also extremely terrified of it, but I’m hoping that she will get used to it as we continue to use it. I think I will keep it on a schedule of running every other morning unless we need it to do more, but we are so extremely happy with our purchase. I will update this review if anything changes!

Works Great
It appears that a lot of the complaints people had about this may have been fixed with an update, because I am not having any issues. Mapping: A+ It mapped my entire house in one run and it created a very accurate map of my home. Cleaning: A+ Does an amazing job on hardwood for pet hair. Also cleans our low Pyle carpet really well – sucked a ton of dust out of the carpet. Cleans way better than the previous vacuum we had. App: B- – The app is very simple to use and allows you to spot clean, whole house clean, etc. You can create separate rooms in the app and then clean rooms one at a time if desired. – You can create No-Go areas – I did this for the one place in our dining room where our dog sometimes has accidents. – The app does not show progress during a clean. Other brands have apps that track the movement of the vacuum and draw lines on the map as it cleans. This would be a great update, as the current functionality is sub par. – You cannot remote control the vacuum from the app. Roborock vacuums can be remote controlled with the app – a really nice feature if you want to clean a very small spot. Dust Bin: A – The vacuum empty’s automatically into the dustbin. Only problem here is that the process is very loud and might wake light sleepers if scheduling night runs. Navigation / Getting stuck: A+ – So far my vacuum has not gotten stuck, but I did have to move some cords off the floor for fear it woul. Overall for $299, this is a great vacuum. The app is a bit behind other competitors’ apps, but it works fine and gets the job done for now. The excellent cleaning and dust bin make up for anything the app is lacking. I do wish it could avoid dog poops, but there’s only one vacuum on the market that does that and it costs $999.

Seller sent a returned item
The sweeper was obviously a return item as a Christmas sticker was in the box. The box was also double taped. Sadly, the sweeper would not work more than run 4 ft and say it was blocked.

Doesn’t Last
The vacuum worked great for about a year but now it’s dead. Also, this was the replacement for my last one, which died after only a few months. Not built for duration.

I think I got a broken one
I had it running for less than two hours when it started saying error 6 which is sensor problem. Cleaned the sensors still saying error 6. Returning it and hopefully the new one will be better.

<1 year and broken
I have had this less than a year and the front bumper bar is broken. This bar helps it navigate. I don’t know how to get replacement parts even if they are available.

Don’t buy
The thing broke after 6 months. Shark warranty dept admitted this is a very common issue with this model. Their customer service was a nightmare to deal with. A month later I finally have a replacement machine – different model. We’ll see how this one does…

I have cats…
I had a Roomba i7. I also have 4 cats who take shedding to the max. I had to run the robot 7 days a week and empty it every day otherwise the cat hair plugged up the vac. No way it was going to self empty. Don’t get me wrong, I think robot vacs rank near the top of mankind’s greatest inventions. I bit the bullet and bought the Shark. It sucks up the hair and self empties. Now I dump the dust bin a couple of times a month. It’s also quieter, cleaner, uses fewer consumables and maps better. In general these machines are comparable, but, overall I think the Shark is enough better to justify retiring the Roomba (a $300 mistake).
Amazon Customer –
Waste of money!!
It doesn’t work. I have had it for months now and it immediately returns to the base every time I tell it do anything. No errors are ever generated when it does this. I have seen similar complaints online when trying to figure out what to do and nothing seems to fix it. I have factory reset this thing twice and cleaned all the sensors several times and it doesn’t seem to help. This was an expensive purchase and I feel like it was a total waste. I do not recommend buying any robot vacuums from Shark.
Nathan –
It stops working!
Starts off great but as other purchasers have stated it basically stops working. It runs through it’s cycle and the house navigating works but as far as cleaning it’s not doing anything, I’m still have to sweep everyday and I just started using this in the beginning of May! It even started making almost a scraping sound that we cannot find the source of, it’s definitely not worth the money!

You get what you pay for

Look at this vac before buying a Dyson
Used a Dyson for about 5 years. I travels around the house bumping into piece of furniture several times. The Dyson mapping system is a joke. Would often miss rooms and not clean them. Also the Dyson was always needing supplies and cleaning. The tires on the wheels lasted only a few years. Dyson wants you to buy the wheel modular part for over $50 a piece. Putting just new tread on the wheels lasted about a year. Finally one day it just died. Would not turn on. Trouble shooting was of no help. Found the Sharp vac for over half the price of my Dyson. The mapping system is very efficient and vacuuming is completed in 1/3 of the time it took the Dyson to clean the same space. Also the Sharp is quiet compared to the Dyson!

Not worth it.
I loved our Robot, till it stopped charging. I have taken it apart, bought a new parts and still can’t figure out why it won’t connect to wifi, finish her sentence or charge. I have done all the help videos, customer service and yet still can’t figure it out. I had the irobot for 6yrs and decided to upgrade and tried a new one. Wish I would have stayed with the original maker of the vacuum robot.

Didnt even last a year. Shark said it’s something to do with the firmware and they wont replace it because it’s out of warranty. They offered for me to buy the same model for $100 more than what I paid, so $400 instead of $300 😒

Got a used one
I ordered this as it was on a deal and received a used one. There’s dust still in the vacuum. This is not expected when buying a new one.

First impression is this thing is very clunky.
Update: Let it charge over 50% before you use it. When I set it up the app kind of let me run it right away and instead of mapping the house it just started cleaning. I put it back on the charger and let it go to 100%. It seems to charge very very slow compared to my last one. Once it was 100% charged it did map the house in about 15 mins and then it dumped itself and I set it off to clean. Seems to work pretty good over all. Lots of dog hair and dirt in the hopper. I will report back after a few weeks. So far I am happier than I was when I first got it so we will see. I think it’s important to log your first impression so here we go. It was well packaged I was pleased to see that. It takes up a good bit of space in your house so find a nice piece of wall. It had 30% charge when I set it up and for some reason it wanted to get started mapping my house so I let it. I’m coming off of a wyze vacuum cleaner. I had bought it twice from Amazon and I like it but some reason after a year the suction just seems to die down and no matter how much air I blow through it it doesn’t seem to clean it out. Thus this replacement. My first thoughts is it’s like watching Grandpa walk around when he’s lost at home. The thing bumps into everything with no hope of actually having a plan. It still mapping my house so I’m going to give it the benefit of the doubt. Right now I’m not so impressed with the suction. I don’t know if it slow suction down while it maps the house or what. It might be a little early to leave a review but I think it’s important again to explain this in detail. Right now I’ve got a lot of doubt but will give it a couple days and I’ll report back. One thing I really don’t like is right now when I press dock it went the complete wrong way and decided to not dock. I liked the Waze vacuum cleaner because it went right to its home and knew everything was. I hope this works out better than my first impression.

Shark robot vac
My husband loves this robot vacuum. The app is great having a schedule set for it to vacuum is awesome. We like how it does not go randomly around the house it has is map that it does. It picks up our dogs hair with no hassles. I want another one for upstairs!

Currently trying to return or replace it. Terrible sensor life.
After a month in a brand new home, cleaning cat hair and dust, it simply stopped working. As far as I can tell it turns out dust and cat hair was too much for the spinning motor for the (uncleanable) top sensor. Fine dust and hair is a common problem just about everywhere, so I’m hoping this was just a fluke caused by a manufacturing defect and not just poor engineering. I’ll be working with Shark and may revise my review after the return.

Piece of junk
Don’t waste your money it clogs up and doesn’t dump in container so it’s no better then the ones that have to be dumped every day. Wish I could return it.

SHARK CONSTANTLY STOPS
At first I loved this vacuum, 6 months later not so much. It frequently stops and gives the notification to clean debris under logo. I have cleaned this and all other parts of the vacuum repeatedly, even though there is no debris found. I’ve rotated the sensor 10 times clockwise per customer service, added it as a new robot, rebooted it, and it will still run for anywhere from a few minutes to 10 minutes before stopping again. Not worth the money or my time to constantly have to try and get it up and running. Something about this Vacuum is DEFECTIVE! I would return it in a heartbeat, if I could. NEVER AGAIN. DO NOT BUY THIS ITEM.

Won’t connect, impossible to empty
We’ve had this for a few years now and it will not for whatever reason, stay connected and run on a schedule. I’ve uninstalled and re-installed the app 100x and it wont do anything. Also forget trying to pair it with Alexa. The bin constantly comes off too when going over something like a thin rug. It’s also VERY loud when it gets to dock and empties. To empty the bin when it gets full is another challenge. You have to almost pry it open and hope dirt don’t go flying everywhere, putting it back on the dock is another issue in itself. Not impressed with this thing at all, looking for another.

DON’T BUY IT
it would stop working a few months more than one year. when you called Shark, they would tell you they only have one year warranty. When you asked how to fix it, they would tell you they don’t have repairing stores. If you don’t have the technology, why would you produce a robot vacuum?

DON’T BUY THIS NO GOOD!
I have a hairy dog and I ran it only twice a week then last week it just wouldn’t charge? not sure what the problem is going to check out videos on Youtube. So disappointed as I thought it would last more than a year? Don’t Buy this item if you want something that is reliable and lasts. I’ve only had this for a year and it’s broken. It was ok nothing to brag about while it worked. So disappointed!

Buy another brand. This one works for about one year. You CANNOT repair it.
The side brush will stop working and the machine will choose not to run at all. Once this happens, you cannot repair it yourself and you cannot order replacement parts or take it to a tech. You’ll have to pay to return it and pay to repair it. You are better off with another brand as far as robot vacuums are concerned.
