Roomba j9+ robot vacuum with P.O.O.P. guarantee avoiding pet waste

Under the Microscope: Evaluating the Product’s Pluses and Minuses

The Roomba J9+ appears to be a device that has garnered a mix of praise and criticism from users. Among its positive aspects, customers appreciate the improved cleaning performance, especially when compared to previous models like the S7+. One user mentioned, “Cleans much better than the S7+ it replaced, and runs longer on a charge.” The J9+ also features interchangeable parts with older models, which is a convenient aspect for those who are upgrading from a previous Roomba. Users have noted the J9+’s proficiency in navigating around the house, with its mapping capabilities being highlighted as efficient. For instance, one user shared, “This thing is pretty accurate and does a great job. Mapping takes forever, and it can get pretty loud but [it’s a] great machine.” The object avoidance feature has also been commended, with a customer noting that it provides pictures of what it avoided, which they found to be a neat addition. Furthermore, the robot vacuum’s ability to pick up pet hair has been met with approval, a feature that is crucial for pet owners. The vacuum’s ease of setup has been praised as well, as one user happily stated, “MO (yes, I named it) was super easy to set up.” For those concerned about battery life and suction power, the J9+ has received positive remarks. One review noted that it has more suction and a longer battery life compared to the J7, though this does come with a caveat regarding increased noise levels. Additionally, the ability of the Roomba J9+ to integrate with home networks, after initial setup issues, has been reported to work flawlessly.
Despite the aforementioned strengths, the Roomba J9+ has not been without its problems. One of the more serious complaints includes a unit that was “Dead on arrival – $600 piece of garbage,” according to a disappointed customer who faced battery issues from the get-go. There have also been reports of difficulties during the initial setup process, particularly with app connectivity. A user expressed frustration, “Both the J7 and J9 wouldn’t connect to my Google Pixel 7 pro via Bluetooth.” Additionally, customer service has been cited as unhelpful in resolving these issues. Some users have encountered problems with the Roomba’s ability to clean certain types of debris effectively. One review stated, “The Suction power seems to be fine, but the fact that the brush/rollers used are rather useless at picking up dust, dirt, and hair.” Furthermore, issues with emptying the bin, particularly with cat litter, have been a source of inconvenience for users, requiring manual intervention. Concerns have also been raised about the robot’s durability and intelligence. Some customers have reported that the device is prone to getting stuck and has difficulty completing a full cleaning cycle without encountering errors, such as “Error 2 – Brushes Need Cleaning error on Carpet.” Lastly, there have been remarks about the product feeling unfinished, with one user expressing regret, “I do not want to beta test your unfinished product.” This sentiment echoes the frustrations of several customers who expected more from the high-end robot vacuum.

The most helpful positive feedback Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2023 by J. Edmondson, and is titled “A succesor to my S9”
I’ve had this just for a day, but I know this robot is going to surpass my S9+. I have a J6+ in my office and it’s NEVER gotten stuck in 6 months of ownership. Its dodged cords, dog toys and blankets that have fallen on the floor. This robot has been doing the same, the suction is like my S9, however the side brush doesn’t get crushed like the S9 did on carpet. Mapping my house used to take 3 hours on the S9, with this robot it did it in half that. The method for mapping has changed and it speeds it up. The map is accurate, LIDAR wasn’t needed. It picks up all my dog hair and sand from when I visit the beach. I bought it for $599 early black friday deal Nov 2023.

Question Bank: Providing the Answers You Seek

How does the self-emptying feature work, and how often do I need to change the bag? The self-emptying feature is designed to allow the vacuum to automatically transfer the collected debris into the Clean Base® Automatic Dirt Disposal unit after each cleaning session. This process ensures you don’t have to manually empty the robot vacuum’s bin after each use. The bag inside the Clean Base® can hold up to 60 days’ worth of dirt and debris, depending on usage and household conditions. When full, the bag can be easily removed, disposed of, and replaced with a new one. Can this robot vacuum navigate and clean multiple floors in a home? Yes, this robot vacuum is capable of Smart Mapping, which allows it to learn, map, and adapt to your home’s floor plan. However, it cannot physically move itself up or down stairs. If you have multiple floors, you’ll need to manually place the robot on each floor you want it to clean. It will then create a separate smart map for each floor, allowing for customized cleaning jobs. Is the vacuum compatible with voice assistants, and how can I integrate it into my smart home? Yes, the vacuum is compatible with voice assistants such as Amazon Alexa. You can integrate it into your smart home by connecting it to your Wi-Fi network and linking it to your voice assistant device through the corresponding app. Once linked, you can start, stop, or schedule cleaning sessions with simple voice commands. What is the P.O.O.P. guarantee, and how does it work? The P.O.O.P. (Pet Owner Official Promise) guarantee is a commitment from iRobot that this robot vacuum will avoid pet waste while cleaning. If the robot does encounter a pet-related accident and fails to avoid it, iRobot will replace the vacuum. This guarantee requires registration and is subject to certain terms and conditions that can be found on the iRobot website. How does the vacuum deal with different types of flooring, like hardwood and carpet? The vacuum is equipped with a feature that automatically adjusts its suction power when transitioning from one floor type to another. It delivers a stronger suction on carpets to lift trapped pet hair and debris, while on hardwood or tile floors, it adjusts to prevent scattering of debris and to ensure efficient pickup. Can I set boundaries or no-go zones for the vacuum? Yes, through Smart Mapping technology, you can set up virtual boundaries or no-go zones within the companion app. These zones tell the robot vacuum where it should not go, which is particularly useful for keeping it away from pet bowls, clutter, or areas with delicate items. How long does the battery last, and what happens if the vacuum runs out of power during a cleaning session? The vacuum has a battery life of up to 180 minutes on a single charge, which should be sufficient for most homes. If the battery runs low during a cleaning session, the vacuum will automatically return to its charging base to recharge. Once recharged, it can resume cleaning where it left off, ensuring the entire space is cleaned without manual intervention.

This is the robot vacuum that was promised to us!

Huge step up from my old iRobot! Self maps the house and easily returns to empty and charge itself at the dock. Wonderful!

    DO NOT BUY!!!!

This is the WORST vacuum I’ve ever owned! Bought last December. It worked ok for a couple of months. Now it’s to the point I would love to throw this thing across the room. I expect to press the button, and it should start vacuuming. Nope! It decides when it’s in the mood to connect to the wifi, which is ridiculous that it has to have wifi to vacuum my house. I have rebooted, reconnected this piece of junk so many times. Sometimes it will reconnect, then say low battery after being on the charger for two days. It’s useless!

j9 does not perform after a month

The j9 is the worst. I had it for about 2 weeks and one of my dogs had stomach issues and j9 just went through it and track in rest of the house. (I had it set to start vacuum at 4 in the morning). I was unaware of this happening. Very disappointing!!! Now it does not vacuum at all. I have done everything they told me to do. I can call again, and they will suggest something else to do. I have called 7 times. And still, it is not working. You would think they would offer better help or suggestion. This is my second Roomba. The first one just worn out I use it every day and I had it for 4 years with no problems at all. I will not be buying another Roomba. Many more on the market. I would not advise in buying Roomba. They do not stand by their products. I should say the machine is not working because of the accident with my dog, I cleaned it troughing and it was working after that.

Battery overheated on 2nd day of use

Will update review after I finish with customer service. They did respond to my email the next day. Now I have to send them more info. Second day of use I smelled a very strong smell like an electrical fire that filled the entire upstairs. Roomba was still running, no clogs. I turned it off, unplugged the charging base. It was hot to the touch on top on one side where the battery is.

    I wish we never upgraded!

We had a roomba that worked great with the exception of bumping into walls quite often. We decided to upgrade thinking the technology would be better and yes it doesn’t bump into stuff as much but this newer version has given us so many more issues. It’s constantly saying it can’t complete the job but doesn’t say why. We’ve done all the troubleshooting options and nothing has helped. I’ve contacted support and they sent us some replacement parts which didn’t do anything and then they want a video of it not working after I sent them screenshots of all the incomplete jobs. How do you take a video of the roomba not completing an area? I’m not going to take an hour long video! They were no help and ignored my request to replace it with a new one. It’s been so frustrating to spend the money on a better version that has given us nothing but headaches.

Defective first week-Poor customer service from Roomba

Let me start by saying that I have never written a review before. I purchased a Roomba J9+ through amazon and paid $650.00. This thing was amazing, it mapped the house, cleaned under the furniture, beds, etc. It did a very thorough job on both our carpet and hardwood floors. Unfortunately, this only lasted for a few days before having issues. It started by not being able to climb up on the dock that was in a well-lit room. It would try many times and only sometimes set in the right place. We rebooted as per the trouble shooting guide and it would work one time, then back to the same problem. Since it did not properly set in the base, the battery would not charge (we cleaned all the contact points/ they were not dirty to start with as this unit is new). We rebooted several times, and it still did not work. I then called Roomba direct to see if they could assist. While the person on the line was polite, they only offered to let me send my brand-new unit that I have had for less than a week in for repairs. The other option was to take the unit apart by removing the screws at the bottom of the unit. I am not willing to start taking something I just bought apart and trying to put it back together. I really expected them to replace my Roomba and let me send this one back. I would have been more than happy to give them another try. I would not recommend buying a Roomba 9+ or any of their products as they do not stand behind them if you get a defective device. Making someone send back a brand-new product at this price point is not acceptable. If you do decide to buy from Roomba, just make sure you buy through amazon so that you have a return option.

    Too delicate!

This thing I brand new and it seems every other day I’m have to already replace a part. I have had many of the first year’s Roomba and they never needed anything other than the bin emptied. They lasted a decent amount of time to justify buying a new one when it did wear out.

    Bad programming and suppot

I would purchase any other brand. The customer support is very slow to respond and doesn’t really help. They forward you to help files without even reading your questions. The vacuum scratches the heck out of furniture. It fails to respond careful on scheduled jobs. It has a careful drive option but only if you run a job manually. The whole point is to schedule the vacuum while you are not around because it’s very loud. I had sent 3 emails asking why careful drive is not an option in scheduling a vacuum job. They kept not answering me referring me to options to exclude an area (which is almost impossible to do accurately in the app). So I got irritated on the 4th email and called them dense for not answering me and they replied they are ending the support because I called them dense. All I wanted was their product to function without damaging my expensive furniture.

Much better than my 5-year-old unit

Had a 960 model that got stuck about every third time I used it This unit gets stuck, about once every 10 times I use it and it’s always do something that I leave on the floor that I know it will get stuck on like a bedsheet coming off the corner of the bed and slightly laying on the floor gets in the roller. And long as you do a quick look through your house before you start it should never get stuck.

SHOULD’VE GOTTEN ANOTHER 600 SERIES FOR HALF THE PRICE

Is it more advanced and less random. Yes. Is it any less hassle to manage? NO! First problem is that whenever it get stops (for no reason) or gets stuck. You have to clear it, start a new job before the ‘Return Home’ function can be chosen. It should be a permanent button, but its obvious that no one tested in a real home with 1st time users. After the bag filled up once and we replaced it. It kept acting like the new bag wasn’t there or it was full, despite checking multiple time to make sure it was seated. A week later still does it and has to be manually placed in the base to clear. Its like every other day I am having to rescue it from some unseen threat that causes it to just stop with plenty of battery remaining. Basically, the same problem as our 600-serries. Find it in odd places, have to relocate it constantly and the app needs a lot of work for basic functions.

Update to what i placed below. It failed literally one minute after writing my review. Warranty process was smooth and they sent a new cleaning module. This has caused the sound to be reduced considerably. I don’t think I can change the star rating though when initial product was so poor. It did vacuum before it died, so I would have just accepted that as the functionality of this device possibly until the warranty expired. It is great that they have the warranty and replacement parts, that would be what keeps this from a 1 star review when it died immediately after writing the review for ~a year of ownership In general I would give at minimum 3 stars if a product does it’s intended purpose, but honestly this one has so many problems that I feel like it deserves less than that. Does it do it’s job? Yes, it’ll vacuum and do a decent job mapping the room and doing that. At least 80% of the time. So what’s it’s problem? Multiple for me. 1. It sounds like a dying banshee when it’s going. That’s on low powered suction. Higher suction is worse. I’ve worn electric ear plugs that cut sound off when it gets to damaging levels and have had it cut off for this vacuum if that tells you anything. 2. It’ll occasionally fail to connect and have issues requiring a reset. 3. Bags in vacuums is something that’s been solved for the most part for multiple decades. Yet they bring it back in their self emptying base to try and get extra cash. I didn’t realize this when I got this, so on me. It’s ridiculous when there are other bases and products that can do without the bags. 4. It’s avoidance system only works sometimes. It’s using a camera and AI, so somewhat expected, but I’ve seen it drive up bookshelves, run right over towels, etc. I don’t have a pet right now, but for advertising that it won’t smear messes, I have to question that a lot based on what I see it do. In general I feel like there’s probably a better robot out there for this. I had an ecovacs cheaper model without the self emptying base before this, and I feel like it’s definitely comparable in functionality. They just had a way worse app. Although I’m slowly learning they’re all trying to shill more crap at you and collect as much data as they can. These app driven products really seem to just be made terrible. Shouldn’t really rate the product for the app though since it changes and in general they all suck.

    Do Not Buy!

Worst and most expensive robot I have ever owned. Eight days over the return date! I have never had to babysit a robot like we do this one!

Does not go around dog poop!

Worked good until we got a puppy. This Roomba is advertised as intelligent and shows how it will go around poop if it’s on the floor. This is a lie! Puppy had an accident, we weren’t home, we got home and our Roomba rolled right over the poop and drug it all over our entire house. I’m not sure I can get the poop completed out of the Roomba. It’s rapped in and around every part of the Roomba.

Side brush quit working within 1 week.

I contacted amazon for info on warranty and return without success. Irobot was contacted and the appropriate info was given to them. The response was; I purchased the item through an unauthorized seller. I didn’t know that was a thing. I assumed if you sold a product on amazon you were authorized and the item would be covered.

Not as good as the S9 which is no longer in production.

This is my 3rd roomba. I reluctantly replaced my relatively new S9 because they no longer make the brush carriage assembly and mine was worn and making a lot of noise. J9 has a much smaller brushes, dirt container, and filter. It seems to fling dirt around more than it sucks it up. The filter seems less than half the size of the S9 filter and it gets clogged and requires changing very quickly. It’s fantastic at avoiding stuff on the floor, won’t run over dog poop, dog toys, etc… and it is quieter, that is the only plus.

First robo vac and I’m impressed for the most part

This is my first robo vac ever and buying this was probably best money I spent for the house. We’ve never had many issues when running this through our home. Suction is very good as well with this and will get most things on the floor. It tends to always get all the edges as well in our home. You can also setup no-go zones in the app which have helped out with some of the issues we’ve had with getting hung up. It also does a better job or cleaning these runners we have in front of our doors more than our full size vac. The full size likes to just suck it up into the brushes but with the Roomba this doesn’t happen. I have noticed that it will struggle with sucking up larger leaves that get carried in. We have also had it running over cords and getting hung up. We have small kids too and also have a bouncer for one of them. It will seem to always try to run up over the floor supports and either keep trying or get stuck and just stop until we move it. We have also had it try to run over clothing pieces as well like socks and it doesn’t seem to always try to avoid them. We did have an incident too when it ran over and sucked up a mess made by our cat. Thankfully it didn’t do any damage and we were just able to clean it out. There is also a issue with using the app and Alexa. We will try to use Alexa to send it to a certain room or to clean the entire house but if you don’t use the exact right words with Alexa it will not go where you request it too, possibly try to do the entire house, or Alexa will just say something off the wall that you weren’t even trying to do. For us Alexa will say I can’t set the living room bulb to that setting. Wait what? No I want you to send Roomba to clean room x or the entire house. In the app also if you want to get it to say skip a room you can’t just have it skip a room. You have to cancel the job and set up a completely new custom job. So you have to wait for it to go back to the base and then empty the bin. Possibly update it’s internal maps which can take a bit of time. You don’t seem to be able to change any job parameters once a job has started. I would think this would be an easy thing to do but it has been added or developed as far as I know. You must also keep the sensors relatively clean on the dust bin otherwise it will make multiple trips to it’s base to empty when it’s not really full. You also have to contend with replacing some parts periodically. I hope that one day they make a base with just a dust bin you can empty in your trash can instead of having to use bags. Also rollers, air filters, and the edge brushes have to be replace periodically. That is unless you can find another solution. Even thought with all these little issues I definitely recommend it. In a family of 5 this has helped us a lot with keeping the house up and clean.

    LOVE MY ROOMBA

This is a replacement for one I bought 5 years ago. It is greatly improved in that the electronics connect more automatically and are more sophisticated, so it is easier to use. i highly recommend it.

    Tough to keep working!

Disconnects itself from wifi. Doesn’t always recognize “cliffs”. Doesn’t pay attention to room guidelines. The suction is great but I feel like I need to “babysit” it!

Research other models – not worth the $

Had for almost a year, and I’d give this unit zero stars if I could. This is my 4th roomba, and by far, the worst unit I’ve purchased. I had high hopes for it with multi-mapping abilities, automatic bin emptying, not to mention the assumption that being more expensive it should live up to the value expectations. Unfortunately the constant connectivity errors, mapping losses, part replacement errors not clearing after reset, etc., have left me beyond frustrated. Being a loyal Roomba supporter for years, and this being the most expensive unit I’ve purchased, I’m either going back to less-expensive models or considering other brands.

    Disappointing

No directions, something is wrong? For example, the main directs/manual is missing so setting it up is difficult. Also, it’s clear this product is used and has been opened before – disappointing.

Not a good at hair pick up

We purchased this because of the amount of hair from ourselves and our pets. In previous vaccumes it was a regular occurrence to have to untangle hair from the roller and device regularly. This one doesn’t have the tangled hair, it just leaves deposits of tangled hair all over the house that I have to pick up or vacuum separately. Also repeatedly gets stuck on drop off areas like the two steps down to our dining room.

    Works great

Does a great job, no issues. I run it 2-3x per week due to pets. Being able to program certain areas for more thorough cleaning really helps.

One of the worst products I’ve ever owned

I purchased the j9+ to vacuum my home. I had previously owned the j7. The j7 was a decent product and I considered it to be an asset. I’m not sure if the problems with the j9 is the robot or the software. But whichever it is, I think the thing is junk. I’ve contacted support multiple times and not once have they resolved the issue or offered to replace it. This thing can’t go for a week without throwing an error. I’ve finally resorted to setting up a favorite for each room and manually send it to clean a room. It constantly requires intervention to tell it whether something is an obstacle. It pays no attention to “no clean zones”, and asks me if I want to create a clean zone that is already a clean zone. It’s too expensive to throw away but I literally despise this thing. 2 stars is being very generous.

Don’t waste money get a Dreame

I got an iRobot Roomba J9 vacuum for the upstairs and an Dreame L10s Robot Vacuum/ mopper for the downstairs at the same time. These are comprable square footage areas, the downstaris has a tiled kithen, the rest mostly carpet and some hardwood, ergo i got a mopping/vacuum combo L10s The upstars is mosy carpet so I got vacuum only. The J9 is inferior in every way, and I mean every way. The J9 is more difficult to empty the waste bin, which by the way is teeny weeny comparatively. The J9 programming just sucks, it mapped a hallway as 3 separate rooms. It doesn’t finish any room before going to another room, then goes back, really? It gets confused and seemily lost, or it gets stuck frequently. I have 2 rooms with almost no furniture in them upstairs, and the J9 has gotten stuck in one of them twice, and i would say lost in it once. It takes longer to charge and can’t finish the whole upstairs before the battery craps out. I don’t believe it goes back to where it left off, I am not sure since it has yet (after 3 days) to actually completely vacuum the upstairs. The L10s finished all the downstairs easlily, and more thoroughly. The J9 wont allow you to skip ahead to where it left off. You can skip ahead once only. The phone app for the J9 is far inferior to the L10s, the J9 is outclassed completely, it’s much more complicated, and far less useful. Heck the Roomba doesnt even come with an instruction manual. I would not buy a Roomba again I’m very disapointed with it, and I would not recommend it. I would by another Dreame product easily.

Terrible product + no returns if you buy through amazon

Do NOT buy! As many other here have reported this product almost never works. It won’t charge, it’s stuck in the middle of the room, it won’t clean but about half of my house (open floor plan), it won’t empty the bin it tells me it’s dirty when it’s not, it leaves trail of dirt behind when on charger, it tells me internet is offline when it’s not, etc etc. Once it does this, even resetting doesn’t work. I spend so much time dealing with this iRobot, I could have cleaned my floors myself about 10x. Roomba admits I have about 6-7 common errors that are incorrect. But won’t refund bc “i bought it from Amazon”. Be warned before you buy (I have an older iRobot that works well).
