What’s Good, Bad, and Ugly About the Self-Empty Robot Vacuum? An In-Depth Review
One user, Casey Johnson, was extremely satisfied with the Shark RV1001AE IQ Robot Self-Empty XL’s performance in a home with hardwood floors and pets, stating that it’s a “game changer” and “She definitely needs dumped every few days being that we have four dogs that shed. But she has no problem cleaning up all the dog hair twice a day for us. We absolutely love her.”
Another user, Stacey, emphasized the vacuum’s efficiency and convenience, expressing that it “keeps my first floor spotless, running it once or twice a day,” and plans to buy another for the second floor. The ease of setup was also a highlight, with Stacey noting, “It was a breeze to set up. Highly recommend.”
Desertrosebud, a senior citizen, praised the ease of use and the self-emptying feature, saying “Rosie works great and does a thorough job of cleaning my house… Rosie goes back to the base when needed to empty the debris into the bagless base container, then goes right back out to finish the job.”
On the downside, Vonnie mentioned that the vacuum “doesn’t pick up the dirt very well and doesn’t reach all the main spots,” requiring a second run with a traditional vacuum, which was disappointing given the price.
Yaroslav Nikolenko expressed frustration with the robot’s functionality, stating it “doesn’t clean enough properly,” and faced issues with it “sometimes turns on nighttime very loud.” The connectivity issues also made it difficult to use, as it “sometimes disconnected from application and can’t be used.”
The stars speak of…
Opinions about this product were divided in such a proportion among the buyers.
This robot is working great for our family home so far. It has mapped the main floor perfectly. Each day it runs it gets better and better at getting every inch of the room area. We have used it for 1 week daily and each day I am surprised on how much pet hair and dust it picks up. I would recommend this product for this price range. Worth the money.
Not the worst but definitely not the best, doesn’t pick up the dirt very well and doesn’t reach all the main spots I got it for. I have to go over again with my own vacuum and that defeats the purpose especially for the price of it. Overall I’m not too thrilled with it if I’m being honest

Issues with Shark robot vac cleaner
I have no issues with the shipper or delivery, just the actual Shark vac. I just received it on 2/20/24 and started running it and two of the three little side brushes snapped off. Then 2/21/24 after charging for over 24 hrs I kept receiving error about the big roller brush. I follow the directions to clear it but kept getting a msg. I called Shark and they are replacing the side brushes and the roller. A bit disappointed about the difficulties I’ve had in just 2 days. Hopefully all goes well after the new replacements.

This vacuum has changed my life
If I could give this thing more than 5 stars, I would. I went from vacuuming every day (sometimes twice) to keep up with our black lab, to running this Shark instead. It picks up almost all of the dog hair, and the self-emptying feature is something I didn’t know how much I needed! We had an older generation Roomba in the past and this Shark is so much smarter and quieter. It mapped our house perfectly, and I love that I can send it to certain rooms instead of having it vacuum the whole house. Seriously, just buy it.

Best purchase we’ve made in a long time!
We decided to get this after getting a second dog. She’s a Husky mix and sheds like crazy!! We got it on a good sale so it was perfect timing too. We named him Marvin and Marvin is wonderful. He vacuums every day and I don’t have to lift a finger! He’s so helpful, you’d never guess we have 2 fluffy dogs. I sometimes do a second cleaning for our bedroom carpet on a higher power because it doesn’t get that hair up as well. It’s a pretty thick carpet though and even our regular vacuum isn’t great at that. It’s pretty easy to set up and the map turned out okay but was a little hard to tell what was what. I will never live without one of these again.

Best one I’ve had so far
I used to have robots from ilife. the v3 and v9. Both were meh. constantly getting stuck on things and the latter just up and completely dies. I got this one for a number of reasons. 1) filters are replaceable. You would not believe how many bots (including some of the shark ones) want you to replace the entire dust bin..at >$20 per to replace the dust filter. 2) Mapping So far, I am quite pleased. I like: 1) It doesn’t get caught on things It seems to be smart enough to not get stuck on everything like other bots did. 2) It cleans pretty good. It gets tons of pet hair and dust. Has made a noticeable difference in the house. 3) Bin. I was dubious but that self cleaning is great. I would never let it go 30-60 days like they claim but it is definitely nice to have. 4) App is decent. Why can’t companies figure out multiple runs per day? Or just to charge and keep going forever during waking hours? Things I don’t like: 1) It does NOT get everything. For example, the LIDAR thing on top keeps it from getting under islands, coffee tables etc. Other bots will go under those. 2) the LIDAR gave me error messages…I’m on high alert for a major failure on this thing but we’ll see. Will update after more than 30 days.

It sucks (and that’s good)
This vacuum does an amazing job at picking up dog hair and getting dirt deep out of carpets. My only complaint is that my dog’s find hair does get wrapped up around one end of the brush and has to be removed periodically.

Good at first
Bought this is November 2022. It’s February 2024 now. This vacuum is great at picking up dust when it actually works. The main drawback is how aggressive it is. Because it is so aggressive, it won’t stop where a normal robotic vacuum would stop and turn around. It gets on top of things and gets itself stuck a lot. It’s aggressive to the point it scratches itself trying to get into tight spaces. The problem I’ve been having for months now is the vacuum getting stuck on nothing and stopping. I’ve replaced all the parts I can replace, but it still gets stuck after like 30 minutes of vacuuming. I’ve checked, there is almost always nothing under or in it. Going to throw this away and buy another one.

Shark
It does a great job except for it is always getting clogged. My house isn’t a mess. Not sure what the issue is.
Peter Soeth –
Not worth the hassle!
I have had this for less than a month and I’m ready to throw it out the window. The first explore went okay and first cleaning went okay until the it tried to empty into the waste storage area when it clogged with the dog hair. The second cleaning it was okay until the brush roll was stuck. Cleaned it and since it was about done it returned to the base station. Now it can’t move 10 feet without the brush roll being stuck even though it has been cleaned out and nothing is clogging it. It’s supposed to be good for pet hair and so far showing it is not worth buying.

Best money I ever spent!
With 4 dogs, a cat, and two kids, grit and pet hair are a daily battle. Having a busy life with 2 jobs doesn’t make it any easier. When I saw this go on sale I finally pulled the trigger and bought it. And let me tell you.. Best. Purchase. Ever! This little robot does an excellent job of cleaning in between deep cleans. The mapping works great! I have him set to clean the whole house once a day, and can have him spot clean, or clean single rooms in between.. and he picks up so much!! Best part is he knows when he’s full, returns to his dock to empty then picks up right where he left off! I’m ridiculously happy with our shark robo vacuum who we have lovingly named Arnold. Get yourself an Arnold.

Happy Gilmore
This robot vacuum is the “Cat’s Meow!” I can’t believe we didn’t get something like this sooner! I bought as a Christmas gift for the wife but we both enjoy its performance on how it keeps the floor and carpet clean from every day crumbs, to dog & cat hair. Easy to program and maintain with its automatic dumping and it seldomly gets hung up but it sends a message to the wife’s phone…. Because she’s in charge!

Good robovac choice
I’ve had the Sharp robot vacuum for about a week and so far I’m very pleased. I previously had a lower level Roomba and thought it did a pretty good job for what it was. After about three and a half years it was still running but had lost most of its suction power. Looked at the available Roomba models on Amazon and came across this one from Sharp at what I thought was a good price. I have found it to be better than the Roomba in most ways. The Roomba was often difficult to get on the dock to charge. The Sharp docks itself flawlessly. The only thing that I have found lacking is battery power. The Roomba would run for about two to two and a half hours before either docking or just stopping. The Sharp only runs about one and a half hours before returning to the dock. But after charging for about three hours, it automatically starts back vacuuming where it had left off and docks when finished, a really good feature. If it lasts three years it will be well worth it.

Can only program one floor
Great little vac, but can only set it up to work one floor with mapping program.

More Temperamental Than a Three Year Old
This has been a most disappointing experience. Initially, the unit paired with the Shark Clean app fairly easily. The initial mapping run went fine, and produced a pretty good map. On the second run, things quickly spiraled out of control. The robot lost its bearings, then lost contact with the app. Now the app will only tell me that it cannot reconnect (even after hours of clearing the initial setup and attempting to reinstall). The only response I can get out of the robot is that I need to empty the dust bin, which is completely empty and clean. I know there are a lot of good reviews for this vacuum, so I guess mine is a one-off dud. It’ll be returning from whence it came very soon.
Astiles –
Keeps disconnecting
Becomes disconnected frequently. I have to delete the robot then add it again and remap each time. Really disappointed
Kira –
Stopped working 60 days in
Vacuum stopped working 60 days in and getting support is crazy hard. The side brush isn’t turning like it should, even though we have cleaned and removed every roller. Look online for shark robot side brush issues.
Kelly W –
Best robot vacuum
I have had 5 robot vacuums- the Shark brand is by far the best. I may never have to actually vacuum again & that is worth more than the price of this. It cleans so well & I can send it to clean certain rooms. I would buy this over & over.
Elaine –
When it works, it’s great
I constantly get the error message on the app that the dust bin is not installed. When I get this message, it doesnt go at all. I have taken it out and cleaned it, put it back in… I also get the message that the vacuum experienced an error but it doesn’t tell me what the error is. I’m assumed it’s related to the dust bin… called customer support and they said to delete the app and reinstall. That fixed it for about 2 days. When it does go, it does an amazing job and cleans well. It does take a while but I don’t mind as long as it gets it done!
Marissa –
Amazing
I’ve never wanted to spend the money on a robot vacuum because that just seemed lazy to me, but cmon sweeping everyday in a one pet household and working all day was just not for me. So money well spent.. keep in mind I swept 2 days ago in the high traffic areas. I plugged this vacuum in and her first run through she had to go and unload 2 times before completing my house. She went under the bed, under the table and on my mats in front of the sink and stove.. she cleaned on my bath mats… she went to town. I couldn’t even believe how much hair from my pet she picked up. This was crazy. If you’re wondering if she really works… she does. I’m so happy with my purchase… I had to come and write a review the same day that I first used it. The app is super simple to use.. I am just so happy. This will help us maintain our home until the weekend when we have a chance to deep clean. She also has a deep clean function so she spends extra time on high traffic areas. Perfect for a pet household

Best one I’ve seen so far
I tried the new Matrix and this one is better and cheaper. It mapped better as well as navigated more fluid. The Matrix would get stuck doing circles whereas this one gets corners well.
Chris Wicker –
Good maintenance cleaner
Doesnt replace actually cleaning your place, but it keeps the dog fur up and away from the baby. It has a remarkable ability to go over the transitions between uneven floors.
SSIMS –
Faulty product. Does NOT work well and is Very loud
I tried to return this but didn’t do it in time. We had an older version that worked much better. This one is faulty, loud and will just run out of battery and strand itself. I would NOT recommend.
Reyna Bohanan –
This vacuum cleared up any doubts I’ve ever had about robot vacuums.
I have two giant hairy dogs. I’ve always wanted a robot vacuum to help keep up with the dog hair. Kept putting it off for the fear that it wouldn’t do well getting corners, that it would miss spots, that I’d have to empty it seventeen times a day. I took a chance with this vacuum and I’m so glad I did. It gets all the corners and I’ve even seen it go back for spots it missed. Its large charging base makes it so I only have to empty once every other week. It does a great job keeping my floors clean and it seems to learn more about how to do a better job with each clean. Highly recommend.
lesley –
great
I would like to know the model number for this vacuum. I could not find it on the bottom of the vac and I’m trying to register it
Rob D. –
Does a great job, surprisingly quiet
Does a great job vacuuming our main floor, which is all hardwood with rugs. Gets all the little crumbs from the kids and the dog. Definitely recommend it! It doesn’t replace an actual vacuum but does more than an adequate job picking up dust and whatnot, surprisingly quiet at least compared to our old room.
Sharon Clark –
Most impressive Robo vac we have had
This one is nice, we had one a few years ago and by the beginning of the 3rd yr it was done. We just tried 2 others and returned them for one reason or the other but kept this one. Easy to set up, mapping works great, goes over the area rug just fine, goes to certain areas and cleans as you tell it. When it goes back to the charger to charge after it’s charged it will go back to where it left off. All in all I would give it a solid 4 but the only complaint is it’s loud. We have to turn the music or tv up when it’s on. But we plan to keep Daisy, she’s doing a good job. Would be nice if it was a little less $ and a little quieter, it would have then received 5 stars……so close.

App support is junk
App is terrible can’t do anything they advertise I have had 3 just spent 700 bucks on this and sweeper works but app won’t I call and they don’t know why. Junk app I returned mine and went with rumba a lot better app works great

Great Christmas Gift
Bought it as a Christmas gift for my brother. He loved it, especially being able to see it working on the app.
dylan spriggs –
Bad for pet hair
I bought this as it was advertised as great for pet hair and no wrap technology. Not only did the initial brush decided it was time to break after 5 weeks but I had to clean and unwrap the roller daily. This is on top of the fact I swiffer and sweep everyday and have one rug in the house otherwise it’s all hardwood. This is not worth the money. The front guide wheel had even come off and I have to either follow it around to put it back on whenever it hits a surface that isn’t perfectly level or I have to not use it because it scratches the floor.
Mork –
Terrible App and no customer service
After downloading the App , you are required to verify your email address . I tried two different email addresses and was never able to get verified . Each time I went to click on the verification , and then back to the App . it wanted me to still get verified . I was never able to connect , and there was no customer service number that I could find to call for help . I ended up packing it back up and returning .

Vacuum while you sleep!
It was very confusing to set up but I’m not very techy ! Still haven’t got it like I want it. Need to reprogram. It does pick up well, except in the corners, of course.

My favorite Amazon product
This is probably my favorite Amazon purchase. The vacuum quickly learned the layout of my home and does a phenomenal job. There are several great features but two of my favorite 1) it doesn’t bump into things 2) it picks up the dog hair. Unlike other vacuums this machine knows it boundaries and does not run into furniture or baseboards. I have two large inside dogs and I can’t believe I didn’t spend the money sooner. It’s been a total game changer in keeping my floor clean. When the vacuum is full, it will self dump and restart vacuuming. It will take me a lot to switch from a Shark. All around great!!

Better than expected
Had a debot. Liked it but battery went. Wanted to get a self cleaning robot and gave this try. For 100 dollars more than the debot this machine is light years better. Never gets stuck. App is very user friendly. Can control where and when to clean. Maps entire house so I can control where and where not to go. Extremely pleased with this purchase and would buy again immediately. Have had it for 3 months and still very happy with this purpose.
steven m christensen –
Very nice product and app but …
Really well designed and works well. Self emptying feature is very nice. Only complaint is it gets ‘trapped’ easily with wires / cords or misc clothes on the floor.

My literal best friend
My fiancé ordered this for me and I am OBSESSED. We have 2 dogs (golden and a black lab) with HAIR. we have carpet and wood flooring. This robot has helped me so much I even ordered one for my mom. For us the storage only lasts a week but that’s to be expected. It has a harder time getting the golden hair than the labs but now I do a “big” full house vacuum every week and a half instead of every two days. Get your time back and order this guy!!!

Awesome
I liked it so much I order one for my son.

Better than expected…
Received as a Christmas gift to possibly replace an iRobot Roomba 960. This is being used on hardwood and tile for 98% and throw rugs 2% of the time. Compared to the Roomba, this is MUCH quieter. It seems to do about the same quality of picking up dirt as the Roomba. It also does less bumping into things or getting stuck. The side brushes spin MUCH slower than the Roomba but it doesn’t appear to affect the performance. If I don’t use it for a few days, it might need to make a trip or two to the canister to empty before resuming cleaning but it does this flawlessly. When it docks and empties into the canister, THIS is when the noise happens. It sounds like Jet engine for about 10 seconds. This is the reason for 4 stars. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the performance of this vacuum and would easily recommend it.
Brandi Gagner –
Doesn’t pick up dog hair
This product works fine on linoleum, but is totally useless on our medium pile carpet which is over half the space it covers. I have to follow up with our Shark Apex upright that collects about five times more hair and debris than the robot. We’ve got it set on the maximum cleaning setting and it’s still no better. I’m beyond frustrated that I’ve spent so much money for a broom, essentially. I would not recommend this product to anyone with any amount of carpet or rugs.

Emptying Problem
I was really excited to have a new auto sweeper. I have two irobots now (1 for each floor but they are years old). What made me make this purchase was price and its self emptying feature. I charged the shark, it mapped out the floor and it was ready to go. It got hung up on a few furniture legs and struggled with a rug I had in kitchen. I did the NO ZONES, too, just needed to tweak it. Upon returning to its base all seemed great except kept getting error that it could empty. It did it 3 times. I troubleshoot the problem and could never figure out why it couldn’t. Therefore, since that was one of the features that led me to buy it and it wasn’t working, I returned it for full return. Irobots back in charge.

Could not use app and Matrix would not work without app.
Very disappointed in vacuum. I could not connect to app and Matrix clean doesn’t work without app. It left a tiny piece of cotton on my very low pile rug. Picked up some dust, but not much. I am going to have to return it. Don’t know if it’s a bad one, but did not work in my home. Additional information..couldn’t seem to find it’s way back to dock itself without help by turning off, picking up and moving within 3 ft of dock.

Just buy it! You won’t regret it!
I must admit I’m A little late to the whole robot vacuum game. I decided it was time to get a little help around the house since we have 2 large dogs and 2 cats. Setup was easy peezy and now I don’t know why I waited so long to buy one! I’m truly amazed at how much this shark picks up off my already clean floors! I have tile, wood and area rugs. It does a great job on all of it. If I could give it 10 stars I would!

First Day Review
I research everything I buy on YouTube and Amazon reviews. I bought my first vac and it was a Roborock because it had the best reviews from robot wars. I liked it and it did a pretty good job and was fast, but still left my short hair dogs fur around the couches, etc. My boys had an accident under the bed, so my Roborock was done. The Shark didn’t have the best of reviews, but thought I’d try it. First thing I liked was the dual brushes. This guy works hard and goes around everything several times. That’s probably why it didn’t get the efficiency high ratings. I have an 1800 sq ft house which my Roborock would completely clean with no bag emptying after returning to its station. This guy was full after only half that, which means it was cleaning a lot more. Its its first day, but I’m extremely happy with it.

3rd try on a robo vacuum
This is our 3rd robo vacuum. And so far the best. Had two different brands. This so far is the best. We have been using it for about 3 months now and works well. Easy to clean. Cleans well. Dog hair doesn’t get stuck in the brush like other brands. I would say it is not a 60 bin. We have one larger dog that really sheds and run the vacuum everyday and the bin fills in about a week.
