What’s Good, Bad, and Ugly About the Self-Empty Robot Vacuum? An In-Depth Review
One user, Casey Johnson, was extremely satisfied with the Shark RV1001AE IQ Robot Self-Empty XL’s performance in a home with hardwood floors and pets, stating that it’s a “game changer” and “She definitely needs dumped every few days being that we have four dogs that shed. But she has no problem cleaning up all the dog hair twice a day for us. We absolutely love her.”
Another user, Stacey, emphasized the vacuum’s efficiency and convenience, expressing that it “keeps my first floor spotless, running it once or twice a day,” and plans to buy another for the second floor. The ease of setup was also a highlight, with Stacey noting, “It was a breeze to set up. Highly recommend.”
Desertrosebud, a senior citizen, praised the ease of use and the self-emptying feature, saying “Rosie works great and does a thorough job of cleaning my house… Rosie goes back to the base when needed to empty the debris into the bagless base container, then goes right back out to finish the job.”
On the downside, Vonnie mentioned that the vacuum “doesn’t pick up the dirt very well and doesn’t reach all the main spots,” requiring a second run with a traditional vacuum, which was disappointing given the price.
Yaroslav Nikolenko expressed frustration with the robot’s functionality, stating it “doesn’t clean enough properly,” and faced issues with it “sometimes turns on nighttime very loud.” The connectivity issues also made it difficult to use, as it “sometimes disconnected from application and can’t be used.”
The stars speak of…
Opinions about this product were divided in such a proportion among the buyers.
This robot is working great for our family home so far. It has mapped the main floor perfectly. Each day it runs it gets better and better at getting every inch of the room area. We have used it for 1 week daily and each day I am surprised on how much pet hair and dust it picks up. I would recommend this product for this price range. Worth the money.
Not the worst but definitely not the best, doesn’t pick up the dirt very well and doesn’t reach all the main spots I got it for. I have to go over again with my own vacuum and that defeats the purpose especially for the price of it. Overall I’m not too thrilled with it if I’m being honest

Does not even turn on
Bought this as a present. It’s been ‘charging’ for three days but the red battery light is still on and the vacuum won’t leave the dock.

Great vacuum!
Love this thing. It’s a little loud, but a real life saver when you have cats who track litter. App is also easy to use. It don’t talk long to map out whole place, and it works really well! Gets almost all the dirt.

That’s how much dirt and hair I had in the floor?!
I have friend that is selling his house. I visited him as he was doing some finishing touches before sale. He had a robot vacuum tidying up as he worked. I mentioned to him that it was pretty neat to have a cleaner following his work around the house. He showed me the amount to dirt, hair and debris the vacuum picked up every time it went around. I was shocked to see all that it got, and this was AFTER his wife, 2 kids, and 4 dogs had moved out of the house. I was sold and found this Ai robot vacuum. It was the highest rated with the most reviews. I ordered it before leaving his house. The next day it arrived and I unpacked and set it up. I got confused at the beginning because I thought it was shipped without the 2 front spinning brushes, but then I found them taped to the protective film I had removed when I took it out of the box. The directions that it comes with are bare bones. I had to learn how to empty it from a YouTube post. It mapped out my rooms perfectly, I was able to set the zones in the app on my phone. The app is also bare bones. It displays the map of your floor the robot scanned, and you can section the map into rooms. This is very handy for when you just need an area of the floor to be cleaned. I swept the hardwood, and used my stand-up vacuum on the carpets prior to the robot’s first cleaning. Then the robot did it’s work. I was amazed at how much I missed. It needed to empty halfway through cleaning over 600 sq. Ft. I have run it 5 times since and it ALWAYS picks up dirt, and hair everytime. The base stores what the robot picks up for up to 60 days, but with 2 dogs, 4 kids and a wife, all with long hair, this is constantly filling the base. The suction is amazing for how small the robot is. I set it to clean on a schedule at night time when we are all asleep, and I can also manually have it clean in demand. It has no remote, on 2 buttons on the robot, and the app has more functions like, low, med, or high suction mode, a matrix cleaning option, and spot cleaning for a small square footage space. Overall, I am extremely happy with this purchase. Having no particles to step on with my bare feet when I walk around first thing in the morning is my satisfaction for making this purchase. The floors ALWAYS look great now that this vacuum is in our home. Definitely worth the price tag.

Error codes and clumsy
The Shark did a good job for the first 3 days, and the carpet looks great but now it keeps getting error code 18 drive wheel is stuck. It will continue to clean if I tell it in the app until I get the error again. Every 5 minutes. It is also unable to find the base to dock. I have tried to remap the house and it still has problems. Also runs into everything kinda clumsy Battery seems pretty good. I wouldn’t buy this again.

The app it’s the terrible
I regret this purchase simply because of how terrible the app is. It doesn’t give much control of the robot. I can set a time and day for the thing to run and that’s about it. Even trying to register it through the app was extremely glitchy and frustrating. The vacuum cleans well but it’s not worth the frustration you’ll experience trying to set it up and operate it. There’s better brands with smarter nerds.

Nice
The media could not be loaded. Nice , pretty quiet vacuum robot. Worth money spent
Greyson Hughes –
Worked great for a year, constant error a week after warranty…
This was a nice robot vacuum to have and we enjoyed it because it cut down on having to vacuum so often and if guests were coming over we could run it in high traffic areas and go on about our business. A week after the 1-year warranty was up I got a constant “side brush obstructed” error when nothing was in the way. Cleared it completely out and realized the side brush mechanism wasn’t spinning freely/forced turned in either direction. The other one spun freely as it should. The spin brush mechanism that makes it spin freely has gone out and now I can’t use it because the error stops the vacuum dead in it’s tracks…. Buy the extended warranty apparently…

Vacuum works fine, Software leaves a bit to be desired.
I have used this vacuum for about 2 weeks now. It does a good job cleaning both carpeted floors and hard floors. This is a dry vacuum only. My biggest beef is with the phone app. Once set up you can add a schedule for cleaning, but you can not change the schedule or delete the schedule. I first set it up to clean 3 days a week. After 2 weeks, I wanted to change this to two days per week. No where does the phone app let me change a schedule or delete a schedule and create a new schedule. Also, this unit cannot clean the entire house on a single charge so it goes back to the base to recharge. It then recleans areas that have already been cleaned. So it takes most of the day to complete the cleaning. The app only lets you look at the most recent completed task so I can’t see all of it’s starting and stopping. You would think that the phone app would be able to display some history of the cleaning. Like how many times it needed to recharge for each cleaning. Shark can and needs to do better.

Buy it!
I’ve have a couple robovacs before and I wanted a better one. I came across this one on sale and LOVE IT

The best gift I have bought myself!
I love my Shark (Biscuit is his name)! He actually makes my carpet look new and it is 30 years old! My special needs sister calls him her friend and my three year old great neice is crazy over him!! I highly recommend this product!!!

Wasn’t thrilled at first but….
After using the vacuum a few times, it seemed to work out the kinks. Creating no zones is great so it doesn’t run over the Christmas tree skirt.

1week in, I love it.
Definitely have had to reset the map as I’ve expanded areas for the sharknado to clean. I’ve got it set to run at 6:30pm daily and does my 900sqft apartment in an hour, both carpet and hard flooring. I have a dog ) (Jindo, think husky — and a cat — lots of fur and dander). Picks up hair & dirt easily off of both. Cons: -Not the greatest at obeying “do not go areas” I recommend physically blocking off so it does not get registered on the map. You’ll need to keep things there the first few cycles as it’s “learning”. -You need 3 feet to each side of the robots docking station. I only have 2 spots that’s really feasible, and one of those is a walkway and it’s very inconvenient.. so just know you might need to rearrange furniture.. I think this is because of the high suction / self cleaning function.

So far so good!
Right before this we tried out a Roomba Q052. It was our first time trying a robot vacuum and we did not like it. We returned it after two days because it did not do a good job due to lack of home mapping features. I didn’t realize how important home mapping is for robot vacuums! So after doing a lot of research I decided to try this one out! We got the Shark AI Ultra Voice Control robot. The first run, it learns the floor plan of your home. At first, it did not generate a good floor plan at all, so I left the house and had it try mapping again (this time with no humans or pets walking in front of it), and it mapped my floor plan very well. I like that it allows you to click and drag different areas to designate the rooms. I’ve had it do two full cleans now and I’m impressed. I have carpet in a couple rooms and hard wood in the rest of the house. It transitions nicely between the carpet and hard wood, and also can go over area rugs easily. You can schedule it to clean on specific days at specific times which is really nice, and also select specific rooms you want it to clean. Here are some minor drawbacks I’ve found: First, that circle thing sticking up on top of the robot is just high enough that it prevents it from being able to go all the way under some furniture. Second, it is kinda loud and squeaky. Not a big deal. I’d rather have a loud vacuum that’s good than a quiet vacuum that does a bad job, but that’s just me. Third, it misses some edges. Again, not the biggest deal. I’d rather it not ram into things like the roomba did. The shark stops just before it would run into something, turns, and continues, which causes it to miss some edges. Over all though, I think it’s great and will keep my floors pretty clean. I am mostly impressed with the home mapping part. I will report back with an updated review when I’ve had it for a bit longer. We’ll see how she holds up!

Simply Doesn’t Work
Don’t waste your money. I’ve had a robot vacuum for about 12 years at this point. Samsung, Multiple Neato, and now this Shark. This shark has the worst interface of them all. The robot is supposed to have a “charge and resume” feature, but 3 months now of turning features on/off, completely resetting the robot, relearning the house, deleting the app, and setting it up as a new robot. But the robot vacuums for 5-15 min, the goes back to its base and pats itself on the back with a “mission complete” report literally showing is only did 5% of the house. It’s just garbage. Just Google Shark Robot not completing runs and see dozens of Reddit posts of everyone having this issue and others. Even if it is actually VACUUMED, which it doesn’t when it does it is the worst of all robot vacuums I have owned. Customer Service from Shark 2/10: Update 1: Reached out to Shark to try and fit it and warranty the item if needed. At no point did a ask for a replacement, only did what was instructed to try and get it fixed. After I called, it took 30min walking through the most basic steps possible with a Level 1 rep. Then…. 45 min on hold waiting for a level 2 tech (not something I asked for). This rep made me completely reproduce everything that I had gone through with the level 1 tech. At no point was there any actual diagnostics done by me or by the rep remotely. It felt like they were intentionally making the repair/warranty process painful just so people give up. The level 2 conversation was another 45 min. So nearly 2 hours after first speaking to someone, they agree it is not working correctly. You would think this would trigger the warranty claim, but no. A level 3 rep would need to call me….. later in the week? Really, after 2 hours of video conference of you literally seeing the machine do all the errors, stops, and failures. Sharks need even more people to see it? They already record the calls, why cant someone just review it? Update2: Level 3 called me at 10:30am on a Thursday. Shocker, I was working and could not answer. Update 3: I call back with my ticket number and speak to a level 1 rep again. He wants me to describe the problem, I let him know I already have a ticket. I tell him the ticket number, he pulls it up and then wants to diagnose. I politely refuse and let him know I was calling the Level 3 tech back, and that is who I would like to speak with. The level 1 rep then speaks to someone, and comes back saying they are going to warrant the item and ship a portion of a new robot (yes portion, not a replacement robot). BUT…. I would have to pay a shipping/service fee. Which is a slap in the face. This unit has likely never worked correctly and has cost me multiple hours of my time this week alone, just to get to this point. There was no good reason this process should have taken +2 hours. They could have asked for a 2-minute video proof of it not working and a 2-minute form to accomplish literally everything we went over in multiple hours. I calmly explain why I would much rather have had my original robot work, I literally don’t want a new one, I want mine to work, and it is Shark choosing to do a replacement, not me. So No, I would not pay any fee. He went away and came back saying they will “wave” the fee. I’ll update once the pieces of the replacement robot come in.

Deficient Base and Sensor Issues
Must’ve received one with a bad base—robot never took a charge. Tried charging on my other Shark Base and it took a charge. Fair to say I received a deficient base. For the few times I did run it, it kept saying that it was at an edge when it wasn’t. It kept getting stuck in one place on a low area rug. I couldn’t figure out why it didn’t like that one corner or the area rug. It had no issues with the rest of the area rug. Seasons must’ve been malfunctioning as well. Ultimately, returned the product.

Brushes get stuck and fall off
I got this shark about three days ago and this is the first time I use it after the home scan and I will say I’m disappointed, there are no extra brushes for me to replace them and I’m sure it’s going to be expensive. I will be returning this item. I haven’t even had the chance to do the whole house this happened with just 10 minutes of use. I was so excited, I got this item for my self as a Christmas Gift and I’m so disappointed. This makes me wonder about Durability.

AN OUTSTANDING VACUUM
I did my research before I bought two identical Shark robots, one for downstairs and one for upstairs. After they each vacuumed 2,000 sq ft twice, my dingy Berber carpet looks new again. After the first cleaning I emptied a softball-sized wad of dog hair from each robot. After the second cleaning there was a golfball- sized hair wad. I have not had dogs for 3 years, so my upright vacuum did a very poor job picking up hair. I can’t speak to reliability because I’ve had the AV2501 AE AI for less than a month, but the Shark brand has a good reputation.

So Far So Very Good
Ive only had “Jeeves” for a month but so far i love it . I have two cats who shed a lot , I also have a mixture of Carpet and hard floor. The App is very easy to use and configure , Jeeves is used everyday. He is very quiet on carpet and a lil louder on hard floor but not exceptionally. The loudest part is when he evacuates his dustbin bucket into the home bin. Cleans really well and only has been stuck once . Which notifies me on the phone
