What’s Good, Bad, and Ugly About the Self-Empty Robot Vacuum? An In-Depth Review
One user, Casey Johnson, was extremely satisfied with the Shark RV1001AE IQ Robot Self-Empty XL’s performance in a home with hardwood floors and pets, stating that it’s a “game changer” and “She definitely needs dumped every few days being that we have four dogs that shed. But she has no problem cleaning up all the dog hair twice a day for us. We absolutely love her.”
Another user, Stacey, emphasized the vacuum’s efficiency and convenience, expressing that it “keeps my first floor spotless, running it once or twice a day,” and plans to buy another for the second floor. The ease of setup was also a highlight, with Stacey noting, “It was a breeze to set up. Highly recommend.”
Desertrosebud, a senior citizen, praised the ease of use and the self-emptying feature, saying “Rosie works great and does a thorough job of cleaning my house… Rosie goes back to the base when needed to empty the debris into the bagless base container, then goes right back out to finish the job.”
On the downside, Vonnie mentioned that the vacuum “doesn’t pick up the dirt very well and doesn’t reach all the main spots,” requiring a second run with a traditional vacuum, which was disappointing given the price.
Yaroslav Nikolenko expressed frustration with the robot’s functionality, stating it “doesn’t clean enough properly,” and faced issues with it “sometimes turns on nighttime very loud.” The connectivity issues also made it difficult to use, as it “sometimes disconnected from application and can’t be used.”
The stars speak of…
Opinions about this product were divided in such a proportion among the buyers.
This robot is working great for our family home so far. It has mapped the main floor perfectly. Each day it runs it gets better and better at getting every inch of the room area. We have used it for 1 week daily and each day I am surprised on how much pet hair and dust it picks up. I would recommend this product for this price range. Worth the money.
Not the worst but definitely not the best, doesn’t pick up the dirt very well and doesn’t reach all the main spots I got it for. I have to go over again with my own vacuum and that defeats the purpose especially for the price of it. Overall I’m not too thrilled with it if I’m being honest

Only 3 days…
The media could not be loaded. Got it on memorial weekend sale been wanting one for so long! It cleaned very well each time, but then after the third day the vacuum started going in circles. It now goes in circles and it’s not even on. Returning immediately very disappointed thought it was going to be perfect for our one story single home but unfortunately it was not.

Love it!
We bought this for our cabin because we wanted to try something other than the Roomba we have at our house. The Roomba is middling at best. We absolutely love this Shark by comparison. It is quieter. It picks up pet hair so well and cleans way better than our Roomba. The only negative is the app only maps 1 floor. I’m hoping Shark can fix that with later releases. I would HIGHLY recommend this vacuum.

After 1.5 years, this sucker is still going strong!
I am impressed with the functioning of this Shark vacuum robot. One and a half years later, it continues to clean my martial arts studio daily. I clean the robot once weekly to empty the big trash can and clear the wheels and gears of hair and debris. I should probably clean it twice weekly, but this thing is strong and keeps doing its job. It’s already paid for itself, and now I’ll just see if it lasts as long as the previous Roomba that I had for 5 years before it died. So far, I definitely prefer this Shark that was slightly cheaper with better functions.

Would recommend
I really like our robot vacuum! I had to delete the first map it created because it left off a room and a half. Since then the map has been complete. I do wish I could create smaller no-go zones via the map. It sometimes gets stuck between cabinet legs but the space is too small to designate as a no-go on the app and with the strips (manual days minimum of 18″). I’ll have to find something to block that particular area, which isn’t a huge problem. We have four cats and run the robot every other, if not every, day. I still run our large vacuum (less frequently) and have noticed a decrease in cat hair collected so I would say the robot definitely helps.

Not happy with the way it cleans. It missed 95% of my home. Missed all the bedroom but 1 a d didn’t even vacuum well. The other boot it way better. I had it for 5 yrs. I was forced to get a new one since mine didn’t not make the move.

Not nearly as good as Shark IQ
My Shark IQ was damaged and so I bought this newer version. It does not pick up fur well at all as it gets clogged up all the time, and, it does not work on rugs well either as it drops clumps of fur all over the rugs.

It is a Shark
This vacuum is the best out there. Beats the other brands. I have two cats and it picks up all of the hair. I love it.

Not Great
I purchased this robot thinking it was on sale (deal). I paid $318 after taxes. I was interested in the features of ‘large capacity’ trash container and pet hair pick up. We have a black lab who sheds like mad. For reference, our home is almost 3k square feet and all bare floor (wood and tile). We have 2 area rugs, a small one by the door and a large round one in the bar/sitting area. The ‘large capacity’ is a joke. I have to empty the trash bin container after every time the robot runs. It’s small. It’s horrible at picking up the pet hair, just pushes it towards the walls and doesn’t pick up. One of the little collector brushes on the robot broke off the first time it ran. It DOES NOT WORK ON RUGS OR CARPET. The robot simply deposits pet hair from the bare floor onto the rugs in clumps. I still have to vacuum behind this thing. Waste of your money. Keep saving up and buy a better robot with an actual large capacity bin that will truly pick up pet hair. This one is not great. At all.

Worth the Purchase
This is the second Shark robot I have purchased. I was very reluctant to purchase due to the short life my previous vacuum had and the lack of support from Shark; however, this one seems to be working as it should as far as how well it cleans. My only complaint so far is that it will randomly start vacuuming in the middle of the night. It was a little startling at first 😂

Worth Every Dollar
The Shark Al Ultra Voice Control Robot Vacuum with Matrix Clean Navigation. What a mouthful! Look folks, this vaccum will be worth the price you pay. Might I venture to say even the $600.00 price tag at full price. Personally, I picked this up for $350.00 on sale and it has been more than worth it. This vaccum sports state of the art 360° LiDAR vision. This makes the vaccum easily navigate your home with almost zero hassle. With this vaccum, you will be able to fully map your house where the vaccum has access to. Connect the vaccum to the SharkClean app on Android or IOS, and activate the “Explore” mode. This mode will retrieve an almost completely accurate reading of the floor your vaccum is on, enabling you to later have the capability to select 1 room at a time! This vaccum also offers a “Matrix” mode. This option provides grid-like coverage to the area being cleaned! I tested this lastnight and it worked beautifully. There seems to be no lack of suction when it comes to this vaccum! So far, it had exceeded expectations. I went to clean the dust bin on my vaccum station and the Shark itself this morning, when I noticed the vaccum’s dust bin had a grape tomato in it. That to me, shows this vaccum is more than capable of competing with other products. The only thing I wish this vaccum features was an on the go mapping update. While cleaning, this vaccum will not update the saved map to the device’s profile. With this being said, if the map needs to be updated, you must delete the current version, and re-explore your house. However, the time to map a roughly 800sqft apartment is approximately 30 minutes. It is very reasonable. If you are on the fence about purchasing this product, make the jump! It will be worth every penny! [This is not a paid promotion/review of this product. This is a personal review of my purchase on this product.]

Defective out of the box
out of the box it wouldn’t run due to error 7 that it detected a cliff – was on flat surface with no obstruction. Disappointing for a $500 vacuum

Worked for 3 months
This is my first bad review ever. The brushes stopped working 3 months after using it customer support was hard to navigate and I’m getting the runaround. Replacement parts ordered and I paid for shipping, it was never sent and cancelled. This is a known issues for Shark robot vacuums and I’m certain they hope the warranty runs out first. I’m almost certain the 2 months I’ve tried to get them to fix a non functioning vacuum they’re waiting for the warranty to run out and wipe their hands clean. DO NOT BUY!!! Not worth the risk.

Did not work.
After unboxing and setting up, we kept getting an error saying “bumper is stuck, error #6”. The vacuum had never been used. Waste of time and money.
Jonathan –
I loved it until it stopped working.
I loved my vacuum, everyday after I left the house it was set to vacuum the home. I never had a single issue… until two weeks ago I got my first “brush roll is stuck” notification. I’ve taken it apart multiple times and have cleaned and even just replaced all the brush components. Nothing I’ve done or researched has helped. I feel at this point I’ve purchased an expensive vacuum that only lasted two month. I would not recommend.

Didn’t last a year….
Purchased this July 2023. Stopped working by not emptying dust bin about 6 months ago. Not sure why but it will not push out debris into container. gets all clogged in the flap with tons of hair and dirt. Must empty by hand. Not what I bought it for. I am handicapped so housework is very difficult for me. I am switching from shark completely. To another brand as I had a previous shark that quit too. FYI: MAY NOT LAST LONG AND FOR THE PRICE IT SHOULD BE MORE THAN A YEAR.

Mapped my home the first time!
I previously owned a RV1001AE that spent FIVE YEARS unsuccessfully mapping my home! This one SUCCESSFULLY MAPPED MY HOME IN FORTY-FIVE MINUTES. I am very impressed!
James K –
Easy to set up.
Mapping the house was fast. Easy to use each week. Very thorough job. It does take a long break to recharge. But it doesn’t need any supervision. The container of vacuum waste is easy to empty. It did have a problem with hair that licked the roller but it alerted us there was a problem and gave easy instructions to address it.

Buyer Beware
I have had to have my unit replaced twice. The first time was a malfunction on the top of the unit where the sensor kept saying there was debris inside the area where the logo is and the second malfunction is the rollers are stuck remove debris.. this is the second unit within a year.

Really works great, and my dog loves it too!
We had a previous model Shark that did our house and though refurbished, it lasted a few years and did a great job. I would estimate that model was maybe five years old. There is a night and day difference with this model. What took the previous unit multiple days to do – blueprint out house, took hours with this unit. It is working much better, avoiding obstacles that would have stopped the other unit. It is more thorough, faster, and more intelligent. I would highly, and I mean highly recommend this model.

After 6 months & shed season
TLDR: Been a lifesaver on hard floors, not a replacement for vacuuming on carpets. You do have to clean the vacuum parts every once in a while. will get stuck on fabrics on the ground (clothes, dryer sheets, etc) After having this for about 6 months I would recommend the vacuum for someone who has a lot of hard floors or regular dry messes but not to someone with spills or a lot of carpet-to-wood floor changes if they have heavy shedders. It’s helped tremendously with the dust in our house as long as we clean the dust filter regularly. With shedding: We have three almost 100 lb dogs which are heavy shedders and live in a very dusty place. We run it every day and even through shed season, our floors looked great! It doesn’t get the hair as much off our carpet so we still vacuum the carpets once a week or every other week. If we had done that before it would have looked like a hair storm went through our house! The brush roll did get stuck quite a bit at first but some WD40 and popping both ends off the roller to clean them helped. One end of the roller does not want to come off at first but once you get it, it’s easy to clean. With the 60-day tank, we dump it about twice a month so I think for a normal household it would last 60 days. Initial setup: it was frustrating because it didn’t map the house how I wanted it to. I must’ve mapped the house 4 times before getting one that was similar to ours. It helps to push the manual button to clean and it helps it map much better. Carpet vs hard flooring: It functions great on all our tile, wood flooring, and even cement( escaped into our garage one day when on “clean mode” not mapped). The main issue we’ve had is the transition onto the carpet, the brush roll cleans off all the hair so all the rooms we have carpet in now have a line of dog hair entering the room. I think it would be pretty good for someone who has fewer dogs. Once it’s on the carpet it works great, even makes those lines in the carpet. Picks up dirt very well on carpet and hard flooring. Noise: It’s a background noise when vacuuming much like a dishwasher but when it’s clearing the vacuum dustbin into the base it sounds like a normal vacuum. App: works great. I do wish there was a feature to run certain rooms every day or different areas on different schedules. I think it would help a lot with the carpet-to-hardwood hair issue.

Do not buy this robot vacuum
We are still waiting for delivery of the SECOND replacement of this pretext for a robot vacuum. The previous versions stopped working and had to be shipped back to the company; this after spending an inordinate amount of time on the phone with a sad excuse of a support team. We will not be buying products from Shark in the future.

The Best!
I love this! I had a dyson normal vacuum before, and this does way better than that one. I love it’s mapping, the app., how well it cleans up. I live out in the country and have a corgi dog and she sheds a lot. So dirt and dog hair, there is a lot. This just picks up all of it so well. I don’t even have to mop as often. I give it an A+, a thumbs up and a 5 star. thanks for making my life easier.

Error 2 doom!
Got exactly 1 years worth of use out of this before getting error 2. I watched every video I could find on how to fix it with absolutely no success. This company should be ashamed for selling this. Please don’t waste your hard earned money like I did
Katie –
Great but not long lasting
Enjoyed this while I had it, but sadly there is now a “technical error” that is no longer supported according to their support. Only had it for 1.5 years and now it won’t start. Not a good value for the length of time we had it, unfortunately.
LA –
Works well enough
We’ve had this guy about 1.5 years now. We still have to break out the real vacuum about once a month but this keeps our home livable with 3 hairy pets. The one real downside is it’s started to ignore no-go zones, so it gets stuck on the ledge of our stairs multiple times a day. We’re going to end up installing a door there anyway soon but it would be nice if this thing would actually obey the no-go zones like it’s supposed to.
Dr. Facts –
It works really well!
We have been using this unit for moths now and it has worked very well. The setup is simple enough and, once you schedule the cleaning through the app, it does the job as intended keeping carpets and floors clean. It is noisy like a regular vacuum, but I schedule it at times when we are not around, so the noise is not a problem. It doesn’t get easily tangled, but it is important to remember to remove cables laying around, blind’s cords or anything like that. The robot does get tangled with those. The maintenance is fairly simple. Just empty the dirt container and clean the filter with some regularity. The robot reminds you to do it. I think this is a very well designed product and provides great satisfaction. Highly recommended.
Bernadette D –
It’s a keeper, but will not replace your regular vacuum cleaner
I like this product, and I use it regularly. I got it on a great sale, and it’s better than I expected. It does a good job on hard floors, and gets under some of my furniture. Watching the unit navigate around things like dining table legs is pretty entertaining – it’s tenacious and gets where it’s going eventually. Mine has this strange thing where after it’s finished cleaning it returns to the dock, and then several hours later it will start up again, tootle through the kitchen and dining room and across the living room, and return to dock without doing anything except going for a walk. It’s kind of endearing, actually. The app is easy to use, I didn’t have any problems mapping the house, and I like that I can program when I want it to run, select cleaning level and select a specific room to clean. It does surprisingly well at cleaning rugs and mats, and does a good job of navigating around unplanned obstacles like shoes. Note – my dog is absolutely terrified of it. On the other hand, the cat thinks it’s fun to play chicken. What it doesn’t do well: Does not get close enough to the edge of the room. I have to walk around with a broom and sweep away from the wall on hard floors to get stuff picked up, and I just have to use the hand attachment on my vacuum cleaner every so often in the carpeted areas. Doesn’t do well with cleaning up after a heavy-shedding dog. I have a Lab who sheds like his life depends on it. The bot picks up about 2/3 of what the regular vacuum does even when I run it on “max clean”. Every other cleaning run I have to take the brush out and remove blocked hair from the intake – it just compacts up until eventually it stops suctioning properly. But it does mean I don’t have to vacuum with my regular vacuum as often. The feature where you can mark a “no-go” zone seems very hit or miss. It did okay when I zoned off my Christmas tree, but flatly refused to acknowledge I had set a no-go zone around my dog’s water dish – I have to pick up the dish every time I run the bot. Sorry for the long review. Everything said, and having got it on a 50% off sale, I think it was worth the money and I’m glad I bought it.

Cleans great but constant errors when emptying
Cleans great. Totally inefficient. Lots of back and forth without any logical mapping. After the 1st month every time it attempts to empty we get error messages and need to clean filters, screens, boxes, etc…Easier to just run the regular vacuum cleaner.

Best Robo-vac I’ve Had
I’ve had Roombas and Neatos, but, while they cleaned the floor they also needed a lot of “hand-holding”. After my last one died, I decided to try this Shark model. I’m really pleased—-at the beginning when there was a lot of cat & dog hair to clean, it got clogged a few times. But we are now in week 3 of running it daily, and it just does its thing and the floor is clean. That’s why I wanted a robo-vac in the first place!

Do not recommend
Have had this over a year. The first 6 months it was run on a near daily basis. The mapping never worked correctly, and the vacuum routing/pattern seems to be very randomized, and inefficient, leading to multiple recharge cycles to fully cover a 600 SF area. Many times I would come home to find it battery dead without having made it back to its charging base. The vacuum suction is decent, but due to the way it routes, it skips over areas. For all of the downfalls, If mine was still working, I would say it would be worth it, but it now will run for less than 5 minute and then malfunction.

Wont work right out of the package zero customer support run away
Right out of the package received an error 6 every time. Tried all the “fixes” and customer service, taken apart, hard shutdown etc…fails. For nearly $500 this is a waste. We have had many of these and this one is pure junk.

Don’t Waste Your Money
This vacuum is crap. It’ll work well for a few weeks, maybe a few months, then will straight up stop working. Mine gives a brush roll error that no amount of cleaning fixes. And guess what, Shark support is impossible to get a hold of/won’t help. Don’t waste your money. Go with a different robot vacuum.

Amazing when it works, awful when it doesn’t. Terrible warranty program.
I have purchased 2 of this exact model. When it works it is the best robot vaccuum I have found. I ordered 4 different models before choosing this one. About 3 months into owning it, randomly gets lost. A firmware update sorta fixed that issue. Now 3 months later I’m having issues where it randomly gets lost again. The left spinning brush sometimes doesn’t spin. Which then causes the vaccuum to stop in place and sit until it dies. Pretty frustrating. If they could fix the issues I would give it 6 stars. Because when this thing operates as designed it is amazing. Now the other bad part. The warranty is suppose to cover issues. Except they require the consumer to pay for shipping. Kind of sad spending $500+ on a vaccuum and it breaks within 5 months the consumer has to cover the return shipping to receive a used replacement. Because of this I cannot recommend this vaccuum anymore. Sharks warranty is a joke and apparently so is the software that operates the vaccuum.

Works like it should and little better than expected
First it works great, I have 4 dogs. So yes it clogged up a few times the first few runs. Don’t expect this to pick up clumps of hair under your bed that hasn’t been touched for months. After the first initial runs, and few sweeps, so far it maintains now pretty darn good. I run it daily just to help let it keep up, so far so good and though I know I’ll still have to sweep (again 4 dogs here) this definitely stops my 2-3 times a day sweepings

Sharp Robo Vacuum Works Well!!
Takes a while to get it acclimated to your space. I re-mapped my apartment FIVE times as I tried to discover a good location for the base unit. Now I have it. When I say, “Clean this apartment” on may way out in the morning, I see lines on the carpet that verify Shark did as it was told!!
