What’s Good, Bad, and Ugly About the Robot Vacuum? An In-Depth Review
The Shark robot vacuum has garnered positive remarks from users who value its time-saving capabilities and its proficiency in cleaning both carpets and hard floors. As one user joyfully stated, “Saves us 112hrs a year! That’s roughly 20 min a day. The orange is worth the squeeze.” This sentiment is echoed by others who highlight the vacuum’s impressive mapping technology, which allows users to instruct the device to clean specific rooms via their phone. The convenience offered by the vacuum’s self-emptying feature is frequently praised, as it can handle pet hair effectively, with one user affirming, “This vacuum is awesome. We have two Spaniels and the wife has extremely curly red hair. This vacuum does its job and then some.”
In terms of reliability, there are reports of the Shark vacuum performing exceptionally for several months without any significant issues. Its scheduling functionality, when operating correctly, enables users to automate their cleaning routines, providing a seamless and hands-off experience. The machine’s performance is considered comparable to higher-priced alternatives, as one user acknowledges, “does the hard floors right and as good as the ones that cost twice as much.”
Despite its advantages, the Shark robot vacuum also faces considerable criticism. A recurring theme in the negative reviews is the vacuum’s longevity, with multiple users experiencing breakdowns within a year. One user expressed frustration, stating, “Only Lasted 8 Months,” while another added, “Broke in a Couple of Months.” Technical issues such as error messages regarding the IR disc and wheel malfunctions have been reported, leading to dissatisfaction with the device’s durability and quality assurance.
The accompanying app has been a source of discontent, with users citing a lack of basic functionality like matrix cleaning and random activation at odd hours despite scheduled times and “do not disturb” settings. Customer service responses have been found wanting, with suggestions like factory resets failing to resolve the issues permanently.
The product’s handling of pet hair has also been critiqued. One user found the model not suitable for pet hair, experiencing frequent clogging, and feeling that the money spent was wasted. Additionally, the machine’s inability to clean without supervision has led to increased user intervention, negating the purpose of an autonomous vacuum. The sentiment is summed up by a user’s comment, “Refuses to clean the room I send it to,” indicating problems with the vacuum’s smart features.
Connectivity and mapping issues plague some units, with the vacuum either cleaning the same area repeatedly or struggling to navigate around the home effectively. This has been compounded by the apparent lack of firmware updates or responsive technical support to address such glitches. As one user lamented, “It’s a brick because the app can’t connect,” highlighting the frustration felt when the device fails to meet expectations.
The stars speak of…
Opinions about this product were divided in such a proportion among the buyers.
This robot is working great for our family home so far. It has mapped the main floor perfectly. Each day it runs it gets better and better at getting every inch of the room area. We have used it for 1 week daily and each day I am surprised on how much pet hair and dust it picks up. I would recommend this product for this price range. Worth the money.
Disappointed. Got this to replace my iRobot Roomba. My Roomba picked up all the dog hair feom my carpet. This Shark just goes over the top of it and leaves the hair. This may be fire for houses with no carpet, but it sure isn’t as good as the iRobot. Looks like this will be going back.

Battery, capacity, support, and cleaning issues.
Very significant issues: – The battery did not last five months. Unit will only recharge to 20% capacity. – It does not have a 60-day capacity. Maybe in a home for ants. Two or three days it is full and requires emptying and complete cleaning. – Shark support is the pits. To get any support you must first select the model. And this particular model is not listed. – The cleaning algorithms are flawed. The unit will continually clean one small area, and then completely miss an area alongside. A few minor annoyances: – No way to smoothly pick it up as it is awkward – why didn’t Shark include a folding top-carry handle? – All sorts of nooks and crannies inside the debris path that catch dirt and must be cleaned – why didn’t Shark make the inside of the debris path smooth? – App receives all sorts of inane messages that must be cleared before you can use the app – realls? In conclusion, this seems more a science project than a fully vetted product.

It’s a maid in a box!
Did a lot of research before I purchased this robot vacumn. I love it! Steve McClean (that’s what I named mine) is awesome. I mapped the house and then created rooms. It does not have the ability to avoid your pet’s “accidents” (I would’ve had to pay triple for a vacumn with that feature) so I scan the room before I put Steve to work. This is such a great vacumn I lifted one to a friend. No regrets on this purchase.

Doesn’t work/clean
Been charging for 8 hours now and the robot will turn on for 2 mins then freeze. I’m really upset with the situation.

Daily vacuuming was never easier!
The media could not be loaded. I’ve had Rosie about 6 months and is programmed to run through the entire house every morning. Getting under beds was a major concern for me. My house is very dusty from being close to 3 major highways and a mile from a major international airport. The daily vacuum prevents dust buildup and helps to keep my house cleaner and with a lot less dusting needed throughout the house. I am disabled and appreciate having a resource that will do these tasks. I use the daily scheduling but don’t talk to the vacuum. It empties regularly on its own so that is a bonus. The main compartment will hold a lot of dust. It won’t last 2 months with my excessive dust but it is easy to empty the bin. Connectivity has been lost a few times but it doesn’t seem to be a regular problem and has not stopped Rosie from doing her job. The app for Rosie is easy to use and helps to keep track of your vacuuming results. It takes about 90 minutes to vacuum my small 3 bedroom house. Halfway through her task she returns to base to empty. She is usually about 15% battery when she returns to recharge. After she recharges there is usually about 6 more minutes of vacuuming to finish up and she does that once she is fully charged about 2 1/2 hours later. The vacuum goes under tables and chairs and beds easily, but not under my couch and chairs and ottoman or dressers that have a lower profile. I don’t have problems so far. I’ve had to replace a brush after it got caught on a rug, which was simple, and I’ve had to clear the brush roller a couple times. All was easy to accomplish. I’ve used the matrix clean room cleaner and the no-go zone feature. Both worked well. (You need the app for these functions) If you accidentally kick your vacuum or it gets knocked off the base, it will return on its on. You can easily use your vacuum without the app, there are controls for cleaning and docking on the top of the vacuum. The app helps you program daily vacuum or a certain time. That is convenient for me. The only thing that could be a problem is where you locate the vacuum. There should be 5 feet of clearance on both sides and the front for the vacuum to have space to realign with the base. When I bought this it was not reviewed yet, and in spite of my hesitation, I do not regret my purchase. I paid just under $400 for my vacuum and I highly recommend this product.

Missing parts
Vacuum arrived with missing parts. No brushes in the package and no way to contact. With no brushes is it still considered a vacuum??

Broke right after the warranty expired. 12.5 months old
It worked well for the first few months. Changing the filter is simple, but it just got worse as it aged. After 12.5 months it is now complete garbage. Turns on, moves off the dock, then stops and turns off. Find a better brand or buy the extended warranty.

30 days, that is how long it worked
What a great idea. A vacuum that maps out the house, recognizes obstacles and pretty much is supposed to be hands off. First day, it took a while to charge (or maybe I’m impatient). It mapped out my house after an hour or two. Setting the schedule was easy. A few days in it just didn’t start. No idea what happened. Maybe it was full. Apparently you have to go in and turn the notifications on so that it tells you why it doesn’t do something. On the 31st day of owning the robot, I realize that it had not cleaned my house in three days. When I went on there to find out why it said to clean under the “shark label”. Um, it doesn’t come off and there are NO directions like a printer to show you how. After searching online and trying to find any answers on the app I was unable to fix the issue. I ended up returning the item after 33 days of owning it. When it worked it did a decently good job however it does not go under cabinets in the kitchen it’s a little too tall so it will throw debris under there with its little whipper sweeps 🤣 Otherwise, it was awesome! It does not tell you when it’s compartment is full and you will have to remember to go check it every couple days or more if you have an animal

All the fancy tech, cant recognize cat feces
The vacuum didn’t hesitate to ride right through a cat poop that was hidden from view and this ruined the vacuum. Do better shark :(. This was a very bad day.

Worked for two months, paid $320.
Got for Christmas set it up in January. January and February worked great, got the 60 day bin. We have pets so the bin needed changed every 30 days. In March started docking but will not charge. We manually put it on charge and it will charge for a second, lightening bolt will blink for a while then just stay lit up. Doesn’t charge. My husband tossed the box that had the paperwork in it, don’t know what to do with it and we are still paying for it.

Broke after 14 months
Interesting that it breaks riiiiight after the warranty expired. It’s a software problem so there’s absolutely nothing I can do about it. Shark offered to send me a new one… for like $450. What. It’s cheaper here!!!
Ursula Froes –
Stopped working in 10 months
I absolutely love this product BUT it didn’t last! The actual robot will not charge even though the base shows it being fully charged – it has no signs of life! It is very hard to get any support via Shark app or Amazon; basically a dead end no matter where I look. Disappointed with the life of the product & the difficulty to get in touch with customer support.
Courtney Rose –
Broke after 1 month…
It literally just stopped working after a month. We checked it, cleaned it, replugged it in and nothing. It left dirt everywhere, the suction was awful. It can’t clean under the little edge of our kitchen cabinets and it will fit just fine, so it pushed dirt into the corners of the house everywhere. Worse purchase, returned it and won’t be ordering another smart vacuum ever again.
Kayla –
High shedding plugs vacuum
I am bummed that this plugs as much as it does. We have a dog with long hair that shed quite a lot. We have to remember to check it everyday when we get home because it plugs so much with dog hair.
hhoffa –
Best thing ever
Best purchase I’ve made in a long time. It’s kind of dumb and tries to go over small bumps then gets stuck, but it gets itself off. Took a little figuring out how to get the canister off, but managed. Only downside to this is you have to make sure flimsy things that can get pushed aside easily are off the floor. I had a cami in the corner and the side brush got tangled on the strap, and my bathroom rug gets pushed around, same as my cat food and water bowl, and the string to my blinds got caught on it once too.
Carley Day –
10/10 do NOT recommend
I have owned many robot vacuums between Shark and Roomba. Shark has been my favorite brand for many of my household items. I am totally disappointed with this vaccum though!! Unfortunately I purchased 2…I should have returned but thought to give them a chance. For reference, I have no carpet and have 2 dogs with normal shedding. The amount of debris that gets caught between the brush and the basket of the vacuum is horrendous as is the debris that gets stuck coming out of the basket when docking and attempting to empty into station. The vacuum is always stopping with errors because the suction power is so poor that the debris does not make it into the vacuums waste basket. It does not dock when it needs to empty, either. I make a mess having to clean the bottom so frequently, every time it runs. It also does not go all the way to trim of the floor – example in the kitchen it is necessary to vacuum right up to the cupboards and this vacuum does not. I am thoroughly unimpressed and disappointed with this vacuum and would recommend previous models undoubtedly over this.
Roxi –
Stopped working less than 2 Years Later!
Purchased this Shark product 7 months shy of 2 years and it won’t even power on anymore! Seeking a replacement through Amazon and will update later.

Best Robot Vacuum Yet
Absolutely love the features of this vacuum. Cleans by room if needed, and the matrix clean is sure to get up any messes (also has a spot clean feature). I’ve been using it for a month, it cleans every day on a schedule, and it has only gotten stuck twice. Once on shoelaces (my bad) and once because it shut itself in the laundry room. All in all, much exceeds my expectations!
Melissa –
Low powered and bad with obstacles
Compared to the iRobot we had for a few years, this thing is terrible. I wish I could return it. I held out to see if it would get better at navigating. It gets stuck constantly. It can’t make it over the thin kitchen rugs. Our other robot vaccum never got caught on anything. I have to make sure all the rugs are picked up when the Shark runs. It’s a pain to use. I am constantly getting this thing unstuck….and most of our floors are hard not carpet. Wish I kept the iRobot.
Leslie –
Broke side brush
The media could not be loaded. Don’t buy this robot, it’s not worth the money after a month that I buy it, I had to replace the side brush and now it’s the other one and they cost $30 each, so it’s not worth having to replace the parts in 3 months and it’s not easy my husband had to disarm it completely
Nelvis –
I don’t recommend
It only works 6 months
Brooke –
Not great
I purchased a Shark robot vac based on friends who have them and love them. This particular model is not great. It doesn’t pick up debris well and often leaves enough behind that I have to spot clean by hand. I have a cheaper model with older technology that cleans far better. This model also has a large disk on top that prevents it from going under furniture, even furniture with risers to increase height. If you have a multi-story home, this model will map only one floor. You can use it on other floors by carrying it to that area and pressing the “clean” button on the machine (rather than using the app), but there is no room mapping if you do it that way. There is also no remote control to direct the vac if it has missed a key spot. You can direct it to spot clean a small area, but that involves returning it to the doc, waiting for it to reset, and then sending it off to a small area. By the time I’ve done that, it would be just as fast to grab my stick vac and spot clean myself. It also does not appear to be pulling a lot of pet hair out of my area rugs. In comparison to my older, cheaper model, it appears to be pulling only a fraction of the pet hair up. Overall I don’t recommend, as my older, cheaper vac performs much better.

Loses connection all the time
Worked great for the first month and then constantly has connection issues and doesn’t complete cleaning
fred –
gets stuck alot
works great but you need to make sure obstacles are not in its way, will get stuck on just about anything, if your rugs have tassels and anything the can be tangles in the vacuum you will need to remove or not let the vacuum in those rooms
jerry –
Don’t last ling
Cheap product. Disconnects from WiFi easily. Hard to navigate app, and will stop working well within 6 months.
Eric –
Underwhelming for the price
I did a lot of research on robot vacuums and was very disappointed with this one as my choice. It does not get into corners very well and the brush doesn’t clean the carpet as throughly as the old robotic vacuum I had. The navigation is great and the app works fine most of the time, the self empty is also nice.
Cynthia Douglas –
Worked great at first! But was was quickly disappointed 😔
I really liked the quality at first. But not even a month in it started saying “My side brush is stuck error #2”, and would not continue cleaning. I checked the side brushes multiple times following the shark app directions, and there were no blockages. I called Shark a few times and had video calls showing my flawed product. They recognized the flaws and offered to send a replacement. However they stated the replacement will be a different color and NOT include the home base, side brushes, roller brush, or back filter. I would have to save or replace those parts myself. I said ok well thanks that will do I guess, because this thing was expensive and I just bought it! But since I live in Alaska (Which is part of America! Not a foreign Country) they would have to charge me $100 dollars to send it to me, and they don’t send to PO Boxes! I felt that was ridiculous because I had just spent so much on the vacuum already for it to do this within a month, and have to pay another $100 dollars for them to send me a replacement shell of the product. I don’t even know if that will work. So what does that just leave me SOL? The kind lady that was helping saw also how it didn’t make much sense and tried asking the supervisor. Unfortunately that also did not work out in my favor, as the supervisor refused removing the extra fee. I don’t know what to do. I’m very disappointed and saddened and feel like I wasted my money and was taken advantage of.

Best vacuum EVER!!!
Love this so much. Easy setup and easy app installation and user friendly
TS323 –
Love my Shark!
I have a dog that sheds permanently and I hate to see dirty floors. This vacuum does a good job, though occasionally I have to untangle the brushes, but it the case with all my vacuum cleaners, because the hair is long and there’s just too much of it! I run it at least twice a day and it does a great job picking everything up!
Cheryl Darnell –
How did I ever live without this thing???
Amazed how well it works and cleans. Ordering a second one for upstairs! Highly recommend! We have 4 short haired dogs that shed and it is helping with the hair issue big time!
M. Williams –
Really wanted to like it
I have dog training facility with 5600 ft of 3/4″ rubber floor, and this did do a great job of cleaning it. The dog hair only minimally wrapped around the roller, it stored a lot dirt/hair, and it is a rugged machine. What it didn’t do is consistently is follow the map and the rooms I created. There were days where it was following a map that wasn’t even created. It is for this reason I returned it.
Daniel G. –
We named it Sharkie
We purchased this robot vacuum after an extensive review. Others said that they liked having one in their house so we took the plunge. We are very impressed with the results of it’s ability to vacuum and it’s ability to expel it’s contents into the base container. The battery doesn’t last for the entire process for our ho.e so now we select A room(s) as needed or desired. The unit is fun to have and makes the chore of vacuuming non existent. Recommended!
jacob kaminski –
Didn’t last long, warranty replacement is a downgrade.
Well it worked great for 4 months. Then got the error code to clean under the Shark logo. Looked up how to do so. Got some canned air and went to town trying to clean it. It never worked for more than a few minutes again always with the same error. Called Shark, we trouble shot it. They determined they were just going to send a new unit. The unit they sent only has one side brush and smaller capacity. Being that the model is a couple hundred dollars less than what I purchased I ain’t happy. Doubt I will buy another Shark after losing $200 on 4 months of ownership with the replacement.

Return to home by itself
This product is useless does not even return back to home by itself, few days it was doing so
Amazon Customer –
Cannot handle animal hair/fur
Every 2-3 days I get a “My brush-roll is stuck” message. The self-empty feature doesn’t clear the chamber, so it gets completely clogged and I have to manually pull it all out. The main reason we got it was to pick up after our shedding beasts. If you don’t have dogs or cats, it’ll probably be great.

Cleans but Mapping Feature not Functional
Great idea but poor execution regarding the mapping feature. Would not correctly map my home. Purchased in order to map and set up rooms that I send the vacuum to for cleaning. I don’t understand why the vacuum can’t build on the map it creates with successive runs. The company doesn’t clearly explain the mapping process. If you accept the map it will not improve on later runs. But each time I deleted and ran again the map was always deficient.

Do not buy
Less than a year, quit working, what we figured was the battery. Have called customer service quite a few times received a customer service number and no one ever called us back. Poor product.

Arrival looked pretty beat up
Didn’t work tried everything to reset it. Kept giving the same error of objects in its way. But it just would spin around after coming off the base. Charged to 100% this item wasn’t used. It was broken. The box it came in told the story of whoever had it before me. It was completely beaten up . Not well cared for. Returning

Stopped working after a year
Product worked well the first year. After that , keeps getting errors within a few seconds of starting. Cleared as directed but keeps giving error messages and doesn’t vacuum.

It crapped out 2 months after I bought it.
It quit after 2 months. They are sending a replacement to replace the wrong replacement they sent the first time, however. Good for them….Really! I got the extended warranty which I highly recommend. I have had a few different robovacs over the years and none of them really last without trouble, especially for what they cost!

Works great for a bit but then suddenly stopped charging
I’ve had my shark for almost a year, I bought it June 2023 and it has worked great until recently when it suddenly stopped charging. I bought a new battery in case that was the issue however it didn’t seem to help. Unfortunately this Shark vacuum is not able to be registered, not sure if it was a discontinued item or just older but there’s little assistance from Shark customer assistance.

Worked perfectly for 11 months and the application would not connect.
(Robot is under warranty) My robot would not connect to the internet thus the maps and schedule time for running does not work. See image. I watched the Shark support videos. Still no communication connection on the app. We called the numbers listed for support. We received 1 hour and 12 minutes support working on the wifi and another 1.5 hours the next day trying to work with support. Our wifi and all systems were go but they wanted more time as in a few more days. I refused since I repeated the steps over and over with a video camera from support checking my unit live so they know I was making the correct configurations. Day 2 of support wanted to escalate forward to check their systems. I refused and asked that the Shark Robot’s warranty be accepted and to send a new unit. They would not send a unit. So we asked to speak with the supervisor. He wanted to wait and escalate again and call back to work with our Shark Vacuum and reset the application on my phone in a few days again. I refused. 2.5 hours of support is enough. Honor the warranty. After refusing any more support help, we stated that the warranty must be honored. We had the warranty and read it to him about honoring a defective unit. He decided to allow the warranty to send us a new unit. All three support people were very patient and kind. However 2 hours and 40 minutes is enough. Be aware…

If you have pets, Then you need this in your life
Best robot vacuum cleaner, I have ever owned. I run it on hard floors with rugs every day. It does a wonderful job of not getting tangled or stuck under things. The app is a wonderful to tool. If you are thinking about it, Just do it. I have two giant breed shedding dogs in the house.

Almost loved it
Cleans very well when working. My shark worked great for 3 weeks before it started having issues. It started vacuuming about half of its map and then started vacuuming smaller and smaller areas. I tried remapping and it never would map correctly again. I complained to late to get Amazon’s help because of troubleshooting for 2 weeks. I finally got a replacement from after 45 days and several phone calls. The new unit seems to work better than the other. The replacement is not the same model but works. Disappointed but hopefully this one last a bit longer for the money.

Cleans great, but the APP is horrible
Robot does a great job of cleaning our carpet and hardwood floors. However, the app is so horrible that it almost makes the robot worthless. The robot will start cleaning in the middle of the night with no programs set and DND activated. The maps will get corrupted and have to be deleted regularly. Cannot select a specific room and clean it without going all over the house. I’m not sure what their app writers are doing because it absolutely does not work for me.

Absolutely love!
Probably my most worth-it splurge purchase ever! It cleans really well, much better than my 5+ year old Shark robot. I love that I can schedule it to clean and when it gets stuck (the occasional sock usually) it sends you a notification. You can even make it make noise so you can find it (super helpful if you have a lot of nooks and crannies it can get stuck in/under). Most days I come home and check my app to see it vacuumed the whole house (all hardwood with a couple of rugs) without issue! My only complaint would be that it has gotten stuck on my thicker faux fur rug a couple times and it has twisted up the side brush, and one side brush got lost due to this and I’ll need to replace it. Overall an amazing purchase that has saved me so much time and energy. I only wish I got the version that mops too so I could really cut my cleaning time down.

Suction
Absolutely love this robot vacuum! 🤖 the suction is amazing, picking up small particles and pet hair. If you have fur babies, this will be your best friend!
