What’s Good, Bad, and Ugly About the Robot Vacuum? An In-Depth Review
The Shark robot vacuum has garnered positive remarks from users who value its time-saving capabilities and its proficiency in cleaning both carpets and hard floors. As one user joyfully stated, “Saves us 112hrs a year! That’s roughly 20 min a day. The orange is worth the squeeze.” This sentiment is echoed by others who highlight the vacuum’s impressive mapping technology, which allows users to instruct the device to clean specific rooms via their phone. The convenience offered by the vacuum’s self-emptying feature is frequently praised, as it can handle pet hair effectively, with one user affirming, “This vacuum is awesome. We have two Spaniels and the wife has extremely curly red hair. This vacuum does its job and then some.”
In terms of reliability, there are reports of the Shark vacuum performing exceptionally for several months without any significant issues. Its scheduling functionality, when operating correctly, enables users to automate their cleaning routines, providing a seamless and hands-off experience. The machine’s performance is considered comparable to higher-priced alternatives, as one user acknowledges, “does the hard floors right and as good as the ones that cost twice as much.”
Despite its advantages, the Shark robot vacuum also faces considerable criticism. A recurring theme in the negative reviews is the vacuum’s longevity, with multiple users experiencing breakdowns within a year. One user expressed frustration, stating, “Only Lasted 8 Months,” while another added, “Broke in a Couple of Months.” Technical issues such as error messages regarding the IR disc and wheel malfunctions have been reported, leading to dissatisfaction with the device’s durability and quality assurance.
The accompanying app has been a source of discontent, with users citing a lack of basic functionality like matrix cleaning and random activation at odd hours despite scheduled times and “do not disturb” settings. Customer service responses have been found wanting, with suggestions like factory resets failing to resolve the issues permanently.
The product’s handling of pet hair has also been critiqued. One user found the model not suitable for pet hair, experiencing frequent clogging, and feeling that the money spent was wasted. Additionally, the machine’s inability to clean without supervision has led to increased user intervention, negating the purpose of an autonomous vacuum. The sentiment is summed up by a user’s comment, “Refuses to clean the room I send it to,” indicating problems with the vacuum’s smart features.
Connectivity and mapping issues plague some units, with the vacuum either cleaning the same area repeatedly or struggling to navigate around the home effectively. This has been compounded by the apparent lack of firmware updates or responsive technical support to address such glitches. As one user lamented, “It’s a brick because the app can’t connect,” highlighting the frustration felt when the device fails to meet expectations.
The stars speak of…
Opinions about this product were divided in such a proportion among the buyers.
This robot is working great for our family home so far. It has mapped the main floor perfectly. Each day it runs it gets better and better at getting every inch of the room area. We have used it for 1 week daily and each day I am surprised on how much pet hair and dust it picks up. I would recommend this product for this price range. Worth the money.
Disappointed. Got this to replace my iRobot Roomba. My Roomba picked up all the dog hair feom my carpet. This Shark just goes over the top of it and leaves the hair. This may be fire for houses with no carpet, but it sure isn’t as good as the iRobot. Looks like this will be going back.

Works perfectly!
I have had this for a week and I love it! Every day I come home to spotless floors. It avoids phone cords and kids socks! So far, I am very impressed.
ShihanDave –
Eats everything in a good way
We love our sharks. We’ve been running ours for years now and the chew up all the pet hair perfectly, empty themselves and then get back to work.
Stephanie –
Garbage
One month past the 12 month warranty it will not dock on its own. It just continues to run into the dock breaking the brushes off. I have to physically place it on the dock so it can empty. I called the manufacturer and they told me they could give me a discount on a new one. No thanks!
Joseph L. Woodard –
Deposits hair all over.
This does not pick up hair very well. When it does, it re-deposits hair everywhere, even after cleaning out the unit. I have to vacuum with regular vacuum, after using this. Don’t buy this!
Nancy –
Best robovac I’ve owned!
I’ve owned two iRobot Roomba units and one Yeedi. This Shark is FAR superior to all. I have a large home and this thing covers it entirely. It returns home to recharge midway thru the job, then returns to where it left off. And then it actually gets all the way home when it’s done. My others usually pooped out on the way back home. I love the self emptying feature. I never believed it would hold 45 days of dirt and dog hair, so I emptied it on day 20. It was only about half full! It runs in rows, like a lawn mower, so it covers most everything, every day. It goes under my sofa, where there are a bunch of cords. It struggles a bit at times, but always finds its way to clean under there and get out. The app works as expected. I highly recommend this Shark model.

Change your mind
I got this vacuum because i thought the white would hide the dust and it does but the vacuum itself had been a disappointment. It maps out the house ok, not tight in the edges though and the suction is poor. For $300 there’s better vacuums to buy.
Sarah M –
Loved this so much until the WiFi stopped working
This vacuum was amazing to help manage the daily dog hair of two large dogs and the daily messes of two small children. It connected to my phone and Wi-Fi mapped my house, which was amazing. I can use it to spot clean certain areas via the app however, after only a couple months of use, the Wi-Fi function is no longer working. I have done all the troubleshooting and still no luck. The vacuum portion still works but it tends to now clean the same small area of my home every time.

Good little robot vacuum.
Purchased for use on Harwood floor. Works giid enough. Was surprised that it also did a giod job on a high pile area rug as well. I’m genuinely impressed.

The Shark is a game changer
My daughter bought one and loves it. Our Roomba died so we bought a Shark. I love it and love the easy to use App. No more dumping the waste, as it is automatic.

Error 6 – Front Bumper is Stuck
I have had this product for 2 days and have not been able to use it as it has had a constant error #6 (front bumper stuck). Called Shark customer service who said that they had a similar call before mine and offered to send me a replacement bumper unit after we did some troubleshooting . As this has never worked, I am returning and will look for a different model. Very disappointed.
Amy –
Good enough
Has been doing a good job, only writing a review so I can figure out the make and model and when I bought it off Amazon so I can order the correct filter replacement. But yes its awesome I have 2 dogs and hard wood floors and I’ve put this poor thing to work! I have to clean the filters often ish but just want to find the right replacement one since I’ve cleaned it about 6 times in the sink with water.

M. Ross –
So far so good!
I’m no stranger to smart vacs – I have 4 robovacs, two of them self-emptying, mapping robots. My other self-emptying one is a Roomba i3+ (which by now is 3 or 4 year-old tech), so I naturally am comparing this Shark to that one. There’s a lot to compare and report on, but I’ll just quickly touch on some categories: – General cleaning power The Shark seems to be right up there with the Roomba. Suction power and brushing is very similar (even though the Shark has only one brush to the Roombas two), with the Shark having a minor edge in suction power. – Mapping The Shark seemed to map my house much faster than the Roomba. It apparently uses its lidar to do so, while the older Roomba had to physically travel over the floor area to include it in the map. The Shark map appears a bit more accurate than the Roomba’s. – Cleaning style The Shark, like the Roomba, cleans in neat parallel rows, and they both do it well. But the Shark has the advantage of Matrix Cleaning, which covers the area twice – in two directions – and that’s a great option. And I also like the spot cleaning option, as well as the ability to set keep-away zones with the Shark. – Flexibility Both machines allow the user to direct them to clean certain specified rooms via their apps, and both do it well. The Shark seems to go to rooms faster, while the Roomba has to think about it a lot before proceeding. Both apps are intuitive and work well. – Noise levels Sound levels are about the same to my ears, although they sound different. The Roomba has a sucking whine, while the Shark has a slightly rattling sound. …………………… Some negatives for the Shark: Maintenance – The Shark uses a bagless sytem, whereas my Roomba uses a tidy throwaway bag. While bagless may seem like an advantage, it requires you to clean the dust collection container instead of just pulling out the bag and tossing it. The bag also serves as a filter, meaning that the Shark has to have multiple internal filters (3 in fact), which have to be periodically cleaned or replaced. Object Avoidance -While it doesn’t bang into walls and objects as much as some vacs, it can be too cautious and stop 3-4″ from baseboards, leaving an uncleaned zone along walls. Looks like I’ll have to pull out the old upright vac every so often and vacuum the perimeters. Profile – Its lidar module on top extends higher than on many vacs, making it tend to get stuck on low clearance furniture. It makes a very good effort to avoid these situations, though, so it’s not a major issue. Dock – While it’s a lower-profile dock than some vacs, it’s also wider, so it takes up more wall area. Leaving the recommended amount of free space on either side is hard to do, so placement might be challenging. ………………………. All in all, this Shark self-emptying smart vac is a great tool. At full price it might seem a little pricey, but it’s on sale from time to time, and might be worth waiting for a good price. In today’s smart vac world it’s a solid contender, and it earns all 5 stars from me in spite of some minor shortcomings.
Maggie –
Excellent robot vacuum
I have pets that create lots of hair piles. This product works wonders in my household. I even bought one for my mom who has issues with vacuuming due to arthritis and heart issues. She loves hers.
Kali –
It’s just okay
This shark vacuum is just ok, it does a great job with mapping to make sure it’s gone over the entire floor but I get so many errors from the vacuum sent to my phone. As soon as I fix one error a new error pops up. The latest one just says error with no details on what needs to be fixed. I bought this because I thought that it was going to be a low maintenance alternative to me having to vacuum and it turns out this vacuum is not very low maintenance. I’ve had it for about 6 months now and it worked like a charm for the first two and ever since has just been error after error.

Jeff
His name is Jeff. Jeff has provided hours of entertainment in our home while meticulously going over every inch of the floor. Carpet to linoleum, he even makes his way over our thick bath rug. I need to get out more.

Reliable robot vac thats eats and cheap(ish) to maintain.
Previously used IRobot Roombas for years up to the s9+ self-emptying model. I’ve been using the Shark AV2511ae for a year and I prefer the Shark over the Roomba by a wide margin. +The Shark’s navigation is superior. The Shark rarely gets stuck, lost or confused + The Shark is kinder to furniture and rugs than the Roomba. My Roomba’s had a tendency to bang into chair legs and the like pretty hard. Also if the Roomba had difficulty getting onto a thick rug it would grind away at it for quite a while until it gave up. + Maintenance is simpler and less frequent than the Roomba. Previously I would need to do a partial disassembly/cleaning almost every week on the Roomba and/or emptying base. Now I clean the vac and base about once a month + Replacement parts are cheaper. Pretty low bar there, iRobot parts are not cheap. In fairness the Roomba is a more powerful vacuum and, when it works as designed, does a better job at cleaning.
Preet –
Poor performance and warranty support
Don’t buy this, mine stopped working and couldn’t get warranty even though I had 5 years on the product. Shark and Amazon kept bouncing me back and forth for warranty and finally gave up

Keeps your house clean!
My wife had been wanting a robo vac, which we had 10+ years ago and it was a pain. Well this thing is amazing, all programmed from an app, empties itself. Its nice to wake up every morning to clean floors! The only problems we have had was when it picks up a random small toy that gets caught in it. Other than that no issues. Highly recommend!
T. Roleff –
I was hoping for a miracle
We have two golden retrievers, so dog hair is EVERYWHERE. I was hoping the Shark AI Ultra would help keep our floors clean of golden dust bunnies. When it works, it works well, but so far, it’s been disappointing and I’m not sure it’s worth the money, although I plan to keep it. It’s probably just me, not doing something right, but whenever the vacuum gets hung up for whatever reason (the side brushes get tangled in the fringe of our Oriental rugs, it gets hung up on a dog toy, or for some other reason), I clean out all the filters, clean the roller bar, and press the button to start cleaning. However, I have yet to be successful in getting it to start cleaning again. So I just carry it back to its dock and wait for the next time it goes out to vacuum. It mapped our house after just one run through. I have the app on my phone, but it absolutely drives me crazy that every time I turn on the app, I have to wait for the stupid Shark icon/vacuum in the app to make 3 “cleaning” passes on my phone screen before I can even get to a screen to change the vacuum schedule, find out why the vacuum is hung up, or anything else. Because we have so much dog hair, the vacuum has to go back to its home dock quite often to empty its filters (which aren’t very big). I don’t mind emptying the filter basket in the docking port (it beats vacuuming). But I don’t think the vacuum has deep suction.
kayla –
Used
I paid full price for a brand new vacuum and received a used one. It was beat up, full of scratches, wouldn’t charge, and was full of dog hair!!! So gross!
BOB H –
This product sucks
Within a year it failed to dock. Continually hitting the dock. Because it was still under warranty I called and got the run around. They were going to replace the tower. Months went by and I never received the replacement. When I called they said I would take months because I live in Honolulu. I said I don’t live on Mars but to this day eight months later, I haven’t heard from them. Not recommended.
Maria bennett –
WiFi sucks
Currently ripping my hair out because it will not connect to my WiFi . Gona have to return it because I can’t get it to connect . It’s been days now . I’m over it and it makes me very mad .

Best Robot Vacuum We’ve Ever Owned
The media could not be loaded. This is probably our 5th/6th robot vacuum over the past 15 years and overall our 2nd Shark. First Shark we bought several years ago and it was horrible. We mostly owned Roombas and we were never happy. They always got stuck, the bins were so small that you would have to empty them every use, and they didnt map well. We have cats and need the extra man power. This is the BEST considering performance and cost. It maps extremely well and knows every nook of our confusing layout. So far it hasnt sucked up anything it shouldnt. It did get stuck one on a tall cat tree ledge, but so far thats the only time. It goes back to the base without issue and sucks up all the dirt. We love the bin because, unlike roomba, theres no bag. We didnt want a bunch of unnecessary costs. Couldnt be easier to empty now. Only other maintenance is a filter you rinse monthly. We love setting Hairy Potter to run at night — he’s quiet and we wake up to beautifully straight vacuum lines in the carpeting. Makes the house look so much nicer and has dramatically cut down on dust and manual vacuuming. Does it replace manual vacuuming? No, you should still do that at least monthly, but this makes a massive difference. Dont think about it too much — if you have the money, its worth it!

Does great with pet hair, low clearance
Have used for this vacuum for 2 months and have been impressed. We know people that had other brands and have been around the robo vacs but never owned one. Have two dogs and visitors that bring others so pet hair removal was number one reason to purchase. We can visibly see the difference in the accumulation that use to gather quickly in corners, it’s gone now! It has multiple filters on base and unit so dust is not just spread around. Have set the schedule to run unit 3 times a week then we do a regular vacuum once a month if needed. Regular vacuum cleaner use time is next to nothing now! Clean the beater brush about once a month. Empty base hopper once a week. We have all hardwoods with a few low pile area rugs. The transition across surfaces has been no issue.Unit will go under a 4-1/4 inch sofa edge and cleans well under it which was always a chore with regular vacuum. Spot clean is a nice feature. Would recommend if you want to have cleaner floors, air and less work when you do clean.
MissWingR0408 –
Great product
I’m super happy with it. It has a lot of suction on the carpet, and you can avoid stairs and you can’t fall down, you can’t miss a corner, you can avoid obstacles easily. It’s really nice
Brenda Sester –
Did not work for me
It got stuck all the time
TxF –
Great for 90 days. Not built to last.
I’ve owned two high-end Roombas and was really pleased with our Shark purchase, at least initially. The price point was right, the ability to pick up dog hair and self-empty without clogging easily exceeded the competition. Once it started to break in, however, the issues quickly became overwhelming. Battery issues, repeated “error 2” messages and stalled jobs have plagued the machine– and the unit is just outside of the 90 day return window. Support is a mess and (if you read the fine print) will be expensive. Guess you get what you pay for.
Linda Harasimo –
Love the home mapping !!
This created an exact map of our home and it was completed pretty quickly. Love the way you can create different areas, name them and then send the vacuum out to clean the whole house or just specific rooms. Would highly recommend this robot vacuum.
Amazon Customer –
Works good
Works good but the battery has to charge way to often.. my home is 1400 sq ft and it can only do about 1/2 then has to go back to changing .. ugh
Robby Land –
Love this vacuum.
We had one before and it cleaned randomly. I almost didn’t buy this because of that. This one is excellent. It mapped the house and is mythological at working our floor plan.
Kerri –
Has a mind of it’s own.
Terrible vacuum. I’d select a certain room to clean, and the vacuum would start cleaning a totally different room. Called customer service to rectify this. Tried all their suggestions. Nothing worked. They sent me a brand new one, same issue. Sold it on Market Place.
T. Greer –
SharkClean app does not work
The SharkClean app does not work. I have installed the latest version; verified email 12 times; uninstalled the app again & it still does not work. It only takes me to a Shark/Ninja product site & there is no way to access or control the AI Vacuum from the app. I have tried the app on my iPhone 11Pro; as well as my laptop- neither work. Called Shark/Ninja customer support 2 days ago & they said they would have a back end specialist call within 24 hours; but have not heard from anyone. Called again yesterday & they said I had to wait for them to call me. The guy I spoke to yesterday said he was very familiar with this issue, but he could not help resolve it. This is a $600 vacuum with an app that doesn’t work and zero customer support.
Chip Gandy –
Vacuum is awesome. App is not
This vacuum does a fantastic job. The bagless setup means I don’t have to buy anything else. It empties easily and I can grab a Lego if it got sucked up. I’ve only had a few instances of it getting stuck on something. It does a good job of moving around. My biggest complaint is the app. It doesn’t have scheduling based on rooms or multiple during day. There’s also no option to tell it to manually empty. You can set it to empty every xx minutes but if the job is quick it won’t empty. It could use a bin full sensor so it would just empty when full. I got this on a 50% sale so it’s worth that. I would not be happy had I paid full price. I’m keeping 5 stars because it does a good job and they can upgrade the app I hope.

“People let me tell you about my best friend”
Call me crazy, but this is the best appliance I ever bought in my entire life!! We have dogs that shed a lot! This little critter, I called Charlie, has made my life so much easier! I only wish I had bought one sooner! I opted out of the mopping feature, and I don’t regret it! I love my Charlie!!

Fabulous!!!
This was given as a gift based on an Amazon review. The review was well written and re-sites after a year of use with continued satisfaction. The recipient of this shark LOVES it. The recipient has two inside dogs, and the ease of this shark going to its “home base” and dumping dust, dog hair etc has been a game changer for this busy couple.

This thing sucks, both good and bad
My experience was not as great as the majority of other reviews. The This is my 3rd robo-vac. My house is 2,400 sq. ft, 1 level with LVP flooring a few area rugs, a lab, and a couple of cats. The first was an early iteration of Roomba. This would just knock about until the battery died, and then you got to play find the robot. The 2nd robot was a Wyze. This had lidar mapping and did a fairly reasonable job. But could not complete the house in one charge. This lasted about year then the suction really started to fall off. Enter the Shark. After reading reviews, gave it a try. Easy to set up. Basic app functionality. Stongth suction. Great battery life. At first I was impressed with the cleaning ability of this vacuum. I did want a little more control in the app. That said, the mapping just did not work great. After a dozen uses, there were still unmapped areas of the house. In addition, the holding bin was so small, I could only do two or three rooms (depending on size) before it would need to return to empty. Perhaps my house is just a little too large or my expectations were a little too high, but this was not the vacuum for us. So I’m in the process of returning it. I did pick up a Roborock Q7 Pro Max + from Amazon Warehouse and so far, really impressed. I’ll write a reivew on that after it has more floor time.

Works Great!
Set up for this item was a snap. Used my phone/app to map out the entire first floor…5 rooms (and entryway), in a short period. Send it out daily to clean different rooms on a regular cycle. Love it!

AMAZING!
I absolutely love it, I’ve had a Roomba since 2018 and it was always mehhh. I got the shark due to a recommendation from a friend. I’m extremely impressed. It mapped my house very quickly. It cleans extremely well. It’s very quiet. It doesn’t bump into walls and chairs. I’ve recommended the shark to multiple friends and family. I’m very impressed.

Ok, Not very efficient
The sweeper mapped out our house easily. It’s quiet other than when it’s self emptying. However, not sure if it’s the vacuum strengthen or skipping rows when sweeping bc I find dust or crumbs still on the floor. We have hard wood floors w area rugs. And it transitions just fine.

Having a large indoor dog this is a life saver. I love tue self emptying feature! Push the button and let her go. We purchased this during a great sale so this purchase was definitely an A+

Works great
This works better than our previous robotic vacuum, by a major competitor. It has an accompanying phone app with which you can program it to clean at specific times and days of the week. With the app, it maps out your entire house (one level only), then with the app, you can name rooms on the floor plan. This enables you to use the app to only clean a specific room, or even target a specific area of a room outside of the normal cleaning schedule. There are three downsides I have found. The setup of mapping and creating rooms for the whole house is time consuming, though not particularly difficult once you visually orient what you’re seeing on the floor plan it shows you it’s mapped out. Then, the orange release button on the dust cup is sensitive. In removing it to empty it, be very careful not to bump it before you get to the garage. However, I do love that it goes to its dock, suctions the vacuum’s internal dust and hair contents into the larger upper cup, and then resumes cleaning. It will also go home to recharge and resume cleaning once charged. There is plenty of charge on this, though. And the last downside I’ve found is that you can have only one phone paired to the vacuum. So, I can use the app to run it, but my husband can’t. He has to walk over to the vacuum and push the button. I know, minor inconvenience. But this means that if he makes a mess in only one room, he has to get the machine, take it into that room and push the button. It then will attempt to clean the whole house. I would definitely recommend, and would buy again.

Sounds like an old clunker car.
This is the loudest robot vacuum cleaner ever owned. The way it moves around the house it’s like some old beat-up clunker car. I do like that it finds its way home every time to empty the bin. I had an issue with the first one and it took over a month from the moment I dropped it off at the postal store to the day I got my refund. I’ve never had to wait that long for refund from Amazon before.

Smarter than I am
Took it about a day to learn the layout of the house. Excellent cleaner. We have a Golden whose main job is to shed. Old Shark would tangle to a stop often. This one does not have that problem. Dust storage capacity is very good. Even with the dog, only have to empty once a week. I’m happy.
