What’s Good, Bad, and Ugly About the Robot Vacuum? An In-Depth Review
The Shark robot vacuum has garnered positive remarks from users who value its time-saving capabilities and its proficiency in cleaning both carpets and hard floors. As one user joyfully stated, “Saves us 112hrs a year! That’s roughly 20 min a day. The orange is worth the squeeze.” This sentiment is echoed by others who highlight the vacuum’s impressive mapping technology, which allows users to instruct the device to clean specific rooms via their phone. The convenience offered by the vacuum’s self-emptying feature is frequently praised, as it can handle pet hair effectively, with one user affirming, “This vacuum is awesome. We have two Spaniels and the wife has extremely curly red hair. This vacuum does its job and then some.”
In terms of reliability, there are reports of the Shark vacuum performing exceptionally for several months without any significant issues. Its scheduling functionality, when operating correctly, enables users to automate their cleaning routines, providing a seamless and hands-off experience. The machine’s performance is considered comparable to higher-priced alternatives, as one user acknowledges, “does the hard floors right and as good as the ones that cost twice as much.”
Despite its advantages, the Shark robot vacuum also faces considerable criticism. A recurring theme in the negative reviews is the vacuum’s longevity, with multiple users experiencing breakdowns within a year. One user expressed frustration, stating, “Only Lasted 8 Months,” while another added, “Broke in a Couple of Months.” Technical issues such as error messages regarding the IR disc and wheel malfunctions have been reported, leading to dissatisfaction with the device’s durability and quality assurance.
The accompanying app has been a source of discontent, with users citing a lack of basic functionality like matrix cleaning and random activation at odd hours despite scheduled times and “do not disturb” settings. Customer service responses have been found wanting, with suggestions like factory resets failing to resolve the issues permanently.
The product’s handling of pet hair has also been critiqued. One user found the model not suitable for pet hair, experiencing frequent clogging, and feeling that the money spent was wasted. Additionally, the machine’s inability to clean without supervision has led to increased user intervention, negating the purpose of an autonomous vacuum. The sentiment is summed up by a user’s comment, “Refuses to clean the room I send it to,” indicating problems with the vacuum’s smart features.
Connectivity and mapping issues plague some units, with the vacuum either cleaning the same area repeatedly or struggling to navigate around the home effectively. This has been compounded by the apparent lack of firmware updates or responsive technical support to address such glitches. As one user lamented, “It’s a brick because the app can’t connect,” highlighting the frustration felt when the device fails to meet expectations.
The stars speak of…
Opinions about this product were divided in such a proportion among the buyers.
This robot is working great for our family home so far. It has mapped the main floor perfectly. Each day it runs it gets better and better at getting every inch of the room area. We have used it for 1 week daily and each day I am surprised on how much pet hair and dust it picks up. I would recommend this product for this price range. Worth the money.
Disappointed. Got this to replace my iRobot Roomba. My Roomba picked up all the dog hair feom my carpet. This Shark just goes over the top of it and leaves the hair. This may be fire for houses with no carpet, but it sure isn’t as good as the iRobot. Looks like this will be going back.

Overall Excellent!
We named it “Reginald”. We live in a sprawling ranch-style home (no stairs). Reggi can sweep the entire thing. There is literally only two rooms that we keep him out of because the rooms are too complex. One in my wife’s craft room, where there are lots of “bits” on the floor that I don’t want to deal with in this robotic vacuum. We also have 3 cats—two long hair and one short. With the cats and cat fur, the only thing to do is ensure the machine is emptied and cleaned about every 3 days in such a situation. If you don’t have pets, you might go a few weeks or even a month. The only problem we’ve had is that it got tangled up in the Christmas tree skirt. I solved that by creating a temporary no-go-zone where the tree was and then it was fine. On that note—make sure any no-go-zone you have a little bigger than what you’re trying to avoid as the machines ability to locate itself isn’t as precise as you might hope. Give it about 6 inches of leeway so that it avoids whatever you’re trying to keep it clear of. Otherwise, as long as the machine cannot get things jammed up in the beater, you’re golden and the front bumper is more than enough to keep it clear of most obstacles. For example, last night I had a bedspread on the floor that it dealt with quite nicely because the spread was thick enough that it activated the bumper, which steered it clear of the random object (e.g., the bed spread) in the middle of our TV-room floor. Other than these cautionary nuances, this machine is worth every penny. I haven’t had to vacuum by hand for almost a year except once.

Great job dog fur
This is the second shark robot vacuum I have had I hope this one last as long as the other one. This one does a better job of picking up dog fur than the last one. Really easy to set up and easy to complete the mapping. It’s set it a forgot it for a week or more. Sorry have two dogs and have to empty weekly not monthly but I run this every day with two large dogs.

Very disappointed in this name brand vacuum.
This is the 3rd robot vacuum we had had and by far the least disarable. Very noisy and the phone app is very limited in the way it fuctions. Shark lost a coustomer with this product.

What a Disaster
We purchased this item for use at our winter home. Two adults no kids or pets. Right off the bat the mapping functions was hit or miss. Finally got the map to work but the vacuum never seemed to follow the ma. Calls to customer service were an adventure. First of all the CS is located in Columbia and unless you speak Spanish communicaton is a challenge. Each time you call you must recite the long serial number, the lengthy model number and the lengthy identifcation number. When all three are on the agents computer they never the less put you through this. The numbers are on underside of the vacuum and reading them can be a challenge. What are they afraid off? In total my four calls to CS were only temporary solutions. In the end the vacuum would launch on schedule, come out its dock , vacuum for a minute of two and return to the dock. A retry would result in the vacuum doing one room and returning to the dock. Ultimately I decided if this device required that much CS in the first month of ownership it needed to go back to AZ. In the end wonky software and awkward CS forced the return.

Unit won’t recharge.
Out of the box the unit would not charge. Ordered a replacement battery from the manufacturer. Even after replacing the original battery the unit would not recharge after just two uses. Really disappointed. Shark products have been great vacuums for our family for many years.

When works it is good
Steer clear of this. I will be returning. Bought new during a black friday deal. I live in a single floor home with all carpet and all fo a sudden the vacuum will no longer vacuum. It lost the entire map of the house. Have done factory resets on the device following SHARKS trouble shooting. In app you have the option to remap (re-explore) your home. My unit will not do this, it literally moves off the dock, spins in a circle and returns to the dock. All sensors are clean. Unit does not do a good a job of emptying the dustbin into the holding bin. Will often take mutiple attemps to empty or i have had to manually empty the bin. I would not recommend this unit at this time.

Great at first, Regret setting in
I’ve had this robot for almost a year. I have two cats and a lot of carpet, so I was hoping to reduce the amount of time I spent manually sucking up cat hair. This robot was great for a while. The initial mapping was extremely tedious and the map itself is less than stellar, but that was easy to get over. It swept up a lot of hair out of the carpets and my apartment had never looked better. Ive now begun to regret shelling out so much money on this thing. I absolutely cannot run this robot without an error. It constantly acts like it is stuck, even after meticulously cleaning out the roller. It tells me that the dustbin is not installed, when it is. Most recently, it is getting stuck in the dock when initializing a clean cycle, forcing me to manually pick the device up, place it back in the dock, and re-attempt the clean cycle. This totally defeats the purpose of having a ‘smart’ robot vacuum since it requires non-stop human interference to do the most basic of jobs. I’ve also had to replace the battery since purchase. Shark’s support isn’t necessarily the easiest to use or navigate. All in all, perhaps this device is great for some users, but I sorely regret not saving my money and purchasing a different unit instead.

Worth the money
I bought the shark robot because I have injury in the upper body where it was aggravating the nerve. so since then it has saved me the aggravation is also easy to clean. Also just a tip anybody who has Wi-Fi that has 5G it will not run off of 5G Internet network .You have to use your regular Internet not the 5G. I only found out because when I called, the guy explained it very well to me, so I’m just giving heads up. Otherwise, it is worth the money.

Great Christmas gift
Bought for our son and daughter in law and they love it. Works great.

Costs more, does less
Definitely regret this expensive purchase. You cannot do anything manual with it (like, when it misses dirt, my old Ecovac would allow me to override its pattern and send it back to the spots it missed.) Can’t do that with this Shark. Additionally, it takes forever to “map” your house, and then does a crappy job of it. Once it’s mapped, if you move something (like a dining room chair!) good luck, because unless you re-map your entire house, it will never clean that area again. Then, if you select just one room for “ultraclean,” it still ignores your setting and just goes off into other parts of the house, without finishing the room you requested. Lastly, even on ULTRAclean, this thing does a lousy job of picking up dust and dirt.
Jordan Dudgeon –
Could not be happier!
This Shark robot replaced our old robot vacuum. The old vacuum did a great job, but without the spinning brush head, it did not clean rugs and carpets well. However this new Shark robot goes up and beyond when it comes to both hardwood and carpet! I personally wish the app was more customizable. The scheduling feature is simple. One time to clean the whole house instead of individualizing rooms to clean at certain times. The no-go zones and mapping of our home has been a big help with cleaning properly and efficiently.

All of my products are SHARK
Loving this vacuum so much! Shipped quickly, arrived in new condition! The mapping feature is so cool. Surprising quiet too. I love that I’m able to put it on a schedule and spot clean my home. There is also an app where I can set it to clean in one area of my home at a specific time as well as pause it wherever it is. BUT I think my favorite feature is the self emptying canister. I hate touching dust and other things that might live in my floors. This little guy is a win for sure. Totally worth the money!

Vacuum is fine – customer service & app SUCK
The vacuum itself was perfectly fine, however, when we downloaded the Shark Clean app (which is necessary for many of the features) and tried to create an account it never would send the verification email. We tried on two different phones with two different email addresses and it never would come through. We contacted customer service, they said they’d call or email back and still haven’t heard from them days later. We called them back and told the customer service rep the issues with the app and the lack of reply, plus our ticket number from the previous call and he just disappeared as if he hung up. So needless to say, we will be returning this product. Beware of all Shark products because their customer service sucks.

Poor Battery
Battery only lasts 30 minutes and has to return to the dock to charge. Takes 6 hours to charge. Takes 3 days to clean a house!

Mine lasted 2 years, my sister’s 1 year
The media could not be loaded. I think I’m going back to Roomba. I have a basic Roomba since 2016, and I have never repaired it, it is now located in the basement. My husband got me this one so I could set a schedule, plan the main floor, use the app and mostly for the large capacity of the garbage container. Buy at your own risk

2nd Shark
This is our 2nd Shark robot vacuum. We had the other 2 years and it is still working and will be the upstairs vacuum now. I had an injury and have been unable walk the past 4 months so, When we found this one on sale, we decided it was worth it to get the upgrade. Living in an old house the thresholds are not level which caused problems for the smaller shark. This Shark has no issues with the thresholds, getting stuck on some rugs. With 2 indoor cats and 1 large dog, who stays inside when we are home, the self emptying is awesome. It is well worth the investment.

Started out great but ……
This shark vacuum I thought was it!! They finally made something worth talking about. After just a few weeks it squeaks terribly. Iv trouble shooted and done everything it said but no luck. But now it’s funny it can map your your home and know where all your stuff is but can’t actually work. Must be made by the government lol

Not an iRobot!!!
Had two iRobots in the past so decided to try this one out. Very different. The APP lacks a lot of features that the iRobots do. The main one is the ability to schedule single room cleanings or even different daily schedules. You schedule the whole house or nothing. Charging is also crazy. It takes about 3 hours to recharge. The unit starts a job, then goes to recharge for 3 hours, then finishes. You can set it to run until it is out of power then consider the job done but then rooms don’t get done unless you run them manually. There is also no way to stop the unit from finishing the job while it is charging.

Does well with pet hair
I got this for my second vacation home to maintain while I am away. It’s easy to schedule and seems to do a good job. It picked up a plastic piece and returned a bin full error, the bin wasn’t full, took a bit of time to find the problem and resolve. Overall so far so good 😊

Failed First Time … Shark Can’t Support Products Sold Through Amazon
We purchased this product during black friday sale. The unit was able to run the intial house scan. The first time we tried using it to vaccum, it had an audiable fault code on the drive wheel. We contacted Shark to troubleshoot the unit. It was determined a replacement was needed and Shark would be sending us a replacement. It was mentioned at the time that we would need to pull parts from the original unit and would need to install on the replacement unit but instructions would be included with the replacement unit. The replacement unit showed up without instructions and it was a different model than originally purchased from Amazon. The replacement unit was black while the original unit is white. When voiced concern on the mismatch of coloring between the units and mixing parts, Shark stated they couldn’t support the white unit. Shark stated we needed to contact Amazon. When contacted Amazon, they were only able to process a return. So we will be looking for another option since pricing has jumped over $100 when purchased unit. Basically buyer beware that Shark is not able to support their products you purchase through Amazon. I didn’t want a brand new unit with mixed pieces.

Doesn’t get under furniture.
This shark cleaner has a disc onto that doent allow it to get under furniture like beds, sofas, dressers etc. So I have to get out my other shark duo vacumn and finish the job. I might as well just vacumn by hand. I will probably return it. I’m not very happy with this model.
Kim Green –
Terrible warranty and performance
I bought this Oct 2022 and by 2023 had to have a replacement unit sent to me because as soon as the robot would bump into anything, it would have an error and stop functioning – same issue that caused the replacement. Shark Warranty said they would send me one replacement then I’m out of luck. Paid $400 to have a vacuum for 6 months. I will not be buying another Shark which is a shame because I normally LOVE their products. Very sad about this.
Nikki Janisin –
Gets Stuck On Everything
This has been a big disappointment. We purchased this in late June for a new building we moved into in August. The shark gets stuck on every floor vent throughout the building. In an attempt to prevent it from getting stuck so much, I bought more of the strips that are supposed to repel the shark, and as you can see from the pictures, I’ve tried putting them only in front, one in front and one in back, and even making them extra long and running diagonally. I also added No-Go zones on the app at all the vents, and it still gets stuck! I do not think it has successfully cleaned the entire floor more than a handful of times during the months we’ve had it because it always gets stuck and runs out of battery. I really wish this had worked out as I had had such high hopes. When it does operate, it seems to do a decent job at picking up material from the floor and I do like the self-emptying feature. It just hasn’t successfully run enough times for me to be able to leave an honest review on its cleaning capabilities.
fauxtawn –
Great cleanup job. Easy setup.
Does a better job than our upright stick vac. And gets under the bed too. Easy setup. Would give 5 Stars if editing the map was more flexible. Everything has to be square or rectangular…no 45 degree angles possible.
Svein H. –
It works but not perfect
It does a decent job of cleaning in general, but doesn’t clean the edges in normal mode. The mapping feature is pretty good, and it gets stuck a lot less frequent than my older Roomba. The clean by room is a nice feature, but unfortunately the number of rooms allowed in the app is limited to 8 or so, so I can’t set up enough rooms to cover a house with irregular shapes. It greatly underestimates the time required to clean a room, estimating 5 minutes to clean a room that takes 45 minutes. The battery life is not great, so I’m having to clean by smaller number of rooms, if not it will go on forever with charging in between cleaning runs. Overall I’m happy having purchased it at $300 during discount. Wouldn’t be worth it a full price.

Bought it as a black Friday gift for wife on Christmas so it sat for a month unopened wrapped under tree. She opened it up n was absolutely in love.Got it unlocked opened and running and it was very loud and sounded like something was wrong.Called amazon and all they can do is refund because they don’t have any available on site.So I called shark directly…After dealing with a few people that I could barely understand I thought everything was good to go..Hung up and received my conformation the new shark robot would be on its way,but wait I have white n silver but replacement is black. That won’t match any of the accessories from my original order,so I called them back and Jonn (floor supervisor) pretty much said I had to deal with it..In small print it says they can replace with equal or upgraded model no matter color..Bull….So now I have to cancel original and find another brand cause they didn’t seem to need my business.I now I won’t get the same black Friday deal as I did on first purchase…

Highly recommend
We have used a few robot vacuums and this by far is the best one yet. It looks good, has a great mapping system, doesn’t get stuck under furniture, and holds a lot of dog hair in container. I definitely recommend it!

Would buy a Roomba instead
I bought this because I read a couple of reviews comparing this one to a Roomba so I thought that it would be fair to try it out. It absolutely does not compare to a Roomba. I had a Roomba i1 and it can run circles around this thing. It is quieter and the emptying bin is quieter but I think that just means that the suction is 10 times less than the Roomba. I would absolutely not buy this again. It leaves trails of dirt from underneath the brush area. It doesn’t even get to the emptying bin. It gets stuck so easy and small areas, and on things where the Roomba can untangle itself and usually manages to get itself out this one fails miserably. It hardly ever cleans the entire house without getting stuck, or failing to make it back to the bin to recharge itself. Buy a Roomba. It seems like any Roomba would be better than the shark. Not to mention the app absolutely sucks. Hate hate hate it. Roomba app is so much easier to use. So many more options. The only option in the shark app is to start it.. the Roomba app can schedule when to start it. You can set it to follow your location so that it comes on when you leave the house you can attach it to Alexa so you can tell Alexa to start and stop it and send it home. This one cannot do anything.

Arrived broken
I purchased this item last summer for my mother because her existing robot vacuum was on its last legs. Had set it aside for her as a Christmas present but when we opened it, there was a distinct rattling sound inside the unit when we took it out of the box. Tried to charge it, but it won’t fit flat on the base so it cannot get a connection to charge. One of the wheels is kind of sunken into the base, which won’t allow it to sit level. I believe the rattling sound was probably a broken piece to that wheel. Unfortunately, by the time we discovered this, we were well pasted the timeframe to request a refund.

Nor worth the cost
Immediately got caught on on a rug and then ran out of battery before it was finished cleaning. Nope.

Nice but…
The app doesn’t show the advance in real time, it doesn’t clean the edges too good, the no go zones don’t work sometimes, and the app and customer service aren’t available for Latam

Game Changer
We bought this & set it up only a few days ago but so far it’s been a game changer. We had a VERY old Roomba several years ago that was handed down to us and it was okay, but nothing we replaced when the battery finally died. It was probably one of the first generations, but it swept haphazardly and filled easily so would stop until we emptied it. This Shark is obviously much newer with better technology, and we love it! I cant imagine not having one in the future. We have 3 kids, a big dog, an asphalt driveway, and live in the woods so the dust, grit, and dirt is constant. We’ve programmed this to run every other day and our floors are so much cleaner! We LOVE it. We did not have any trouble with mapping like some others did. We read a few reviews on here and turned on every light in the house and picked up toys before it mapped and that worked perfectly. We only had to do it 1 time. The app is helpful to see and set your rooms after mapping. We also have it synced to our Google Home app. I’m amazed at how persistent our little shark is at getting under cabinets and around end tables. We love the matrix feature for our floors. It was pretty impressive to watch it ultimately make the grid pattern. My best advice is just to let it go – don’t move it or reposition it while it’s sweeping. Trust the process and it’ll get smarter each time. You’ll end up with perfect straight lines. Pretty impressive. The battery has good charge for our home. We have it sweeping about 1,600 square feet of our main floor and no need for it to recharge in the middle. It emptied about 2 times, but it goes right back to where it was sweeping afterward like a good little worker. It goes from carpet, to rug, to wood floor seamlessly. It’s quiet and not disruptive. The empty sounds like a bit of a jet, but it’s brief. You do need to have a 3 ft area around the front of your base so it can back itself in and turn around, but it’s not an eye sore. And honestly, this thing is so helpful that I don’t even care. My husband and I watch in amazement. We said it’s like getting a color TV for the first time – we want to have all our friends and family over to watch and share the excitement!

😑 meh.
If you have a small space to clean…super! If it doesn’t have different rooms to go to. When it’s vacuuming the right spaces it does a great job. I bought this for my ranch style house. I was so excited. However the room mapping doesn’t work after a bit. It is like a rebellious child…doing it’s own thing. Today for instance; I sent it to clean the family room before company came, but it decided to go instead to the dining room, which didn’t need vacuuming. Then headed back for the dock and said it was done. Other times it will decide instead the whole house needs cleaning but only do half of some rooms and move on. Or if I select the whole house, it will only clean a couple rooms somewhat and be done after a couple recharged. So I find myself more and more often having to pull out the vacuum and do the job myself. Pretty frustrating! I would not choose this particular robot vacuum again as happy as I was with it when we first got it. Sadly, it quickly changed my vote. Glad I waited a few months to review. Note: my sister who lives out of state also has this vacuum. I spoke to her sure when I started having issues, sure I was doing something wrong…she shared she’s looking to replace hers because she has dealt with the same thing. She has multiple ones on each floor; but only one Shark and won’t be getting another. Buyer beware

Vacuums but it’s rattling and noisier than the one I gave to my mom
The media could not be loaded. Vacuum does what it’s supposed to do I’ve had a robot before a different model I got this one has it was cheaper than the one that I had before and it’s loud and rattling like a really bad car is what it sounds like and that doesn’t seem to be normal it’s new so there’s nothing stuck in it when it did the explorer room it was loud and it has not died down and I’m not sure what to do or what’s going on or if I should just send it back

Great vacuum
I have owned several robotic vacuums in the past and this is by far the best! Good mapping, and good suction. Cleaned up the cat hair very well.

Absolutely wonderful
We have very thick carpet so I needed a robot vacuum that had enough suction. This did not disappoint. The photo is after Baby Shark did matrix clean in that room. We took the faux tree down and there were plastic needles all over the place. I named it baby shark because it’s little and cute. In recap Great with 2nd to highest/thickest carpet from Empire. The carpet is about 6 months old. It picked up 98% of the plastic faux tree needles on and in this carpet. It is wonderful to not have to personally empty the robot and have dust fly. It is very direct and easy to understand what is needed when there is an error. Except it says it can’t get the stuff into the collector and to check for blockage.. the bin was full and there was no blockage. It got a candy cane wrapper around the brush and alerted me on my phone and said what was wrong out loud when my husband went to see why it stopped. As of right now I would definitely recommend. Only thing now is figuring out if we can just remap the room that had the Christmas tree and not have to remap as rooms are changed around. I just haven’t looked it up yet

Doesn’t get stuck on everything
We’ve had it a week and love it. Our previous iRobot got stuck under our counters, furniture, floor transitions… EVERYTHING. This robot has yet to get stuck once. The app is not quite as user friendly as iRobot’s was, but it’s got a lot of the same features once you get used to it. We use ours on hard floors and low pile carpet with 3 dogs, a cat, and farm ick coming in on our feet and this vacuum keeps up just fine. I was worried with how the reviews were all over the place on the iQ, but it’s better than I imagined. While cleaning, it’s pretty quiet. The evacuation into the collection bin is pretty loud; loud enough to wake you up. We schedule ours to run during the day when we’re at work though so it’s a non-issue. Overall, very happy with this vacuum, especially for the price.
