Self-cleaning brushroll of Shark AI Ultra Robot Vacuum effectively removing hair and dirt from carpets and hardwood floors

What’s Good, Bad, and Ugly About the Robot Vacuum? An In-Depth Review

The Shark robot vacuum has garnered positive remarks from users who value its time-saving capabilities and its proficiency in cleaning both carpets and hard floors. As one user joyfully stated, “Saves us 112hrs a year! That’s roughly 20 min a day. The orange is worth the squeeze.” This sentiment is echoed by others who highlight the vacuum’s impressive mapping technology, which allows users to instruct the device to clean specific rooms via their phone. The convenience offered by the vacuum’s self-emptying feature is frequently praised, as it can handle pet hair effectively, with one user affirming, “This vacuum is awesome. We have two Spaniels and the wife has extremely curly red hair. This vacuum does its job and then some.”

In terms of reliability, there are reports of the Shark vacuum performing exceptionally for several months without any significant issues. Its scheduling functionality, when operating correctly, enables users to automate their cleaning routines, providing a seamless and hands-off experience. The machine’s performance is considered comparable to higher-priced alternatives, as one user acknowledges, “does the hard floors right and as good as the ones that cost twice as much.”

Despite its advantages, the Shark robot vacuum also faces considerable criticism. A recurring theme in the negative reviews is the vacuum’s longevity, with multiple users experiencing breakdowns within a year. One user expressed frustration, stating, “Only Lasted 8 Months,” while another added, “Broke in a Couple of Months.” Technical issues such as error messages regarding the IR disc and wheel malfunctions have been reported, leading to dissatisfaction with the device’s durability and quality assurance.

The accompanying app has been a source of discontent, with users citing a lack of basic functionality like matrix cleaning and random activation at odd hours despite scheduled times and “do not disturb” settings. Customer service responses have been found wanting, with suggestions like factory resets failing to resolve the issues permanently.

The product’s handling of pet hair has also been critiqued. One user found the model not suitable for pet hair, experiencing frequent clogging, and feeling that the money spent was wasted. Additionally, the machine’s inability to clean without supervision has led to increased user intervention, negating the purpose of an autonomous vacuum. The sentiment is summed up by a user’s comment, “Refuses to clean the room I send it to,” indicating problems with the vacuum’s smart features.

Connectivity and mapping issues plague some units, with the vacuum either cleaning the same area repeatedly or struggling to navigate around the home effectively. This has been compounded by the apparent lack of firmware updates or responsive technical support to address such glitches. As one user lamented, “It’s a brick because the app can’t connect,” highlighting the frustration felt when the device fails to meet expectations.

The most helpful positive feedback Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2024 by lme, and is titled “great for the price”
This robot is working great for our family home so far. It has mapped the main floor perfectly. Each day it runs it gets better and better at getting every inch of the room area. We have used it for 1 week daily and each day I am surprised on how much pet hair and dust it picks up. I would recommend this product for this price range. Worth the money.

Disappointed. Got this to replace my iRobot Roomba. My Roomba picked up all the dog hair feom my carpet. This Shark just goes over the top of it and leaves the hair. This may be fire for houses with no carpet, but it sure isn’t as good as the iRobot. Looks like this will be going back.

    It Literally Sucks!

I bought this to replace a newer iRobot (Roomba) which kept getting stuck, teetered on edges of steps, kept getting disconnected, the map kept regenerating making me redraw room lines and names. The shark is a much better product. Pros: quick set up, easily connected to my WiFi and after a month has stayed connected Mapping was complete on the first run! It hasn’t gotten stuck once and seems to deal with cords better than Roomba It is so quiet (compared to my Roomba) It takes 85 minutes running time to do one level of my home. It dumps the dirt out itself…yay! The app is easy to use. Cons: It doesn’t pick up everything…small pieces of cat food can be left behind or whisked out of it’s path It doesn’t vacuum into corners well. I have to sweep out tight spaces ahead of time if I want them cleaned. It does have to stop for a recharge midway through my entire downstairs (but it recharges quickly, as opposed to my Roomba which would take multiple longer stops to do the same area. I debated on whether I really needed to replace my Roomba, but with hindsight I am so very glad I did. The Shark is easy to use and works well…as do my other Shark products.

    Better than expected

After reading reviews, I expected I might struggle a little getting ‘Sparkle’ set up. Pleasantly surprised. Charges quickly. Mapped my house effective the first time and got to work. I have a yellow lab so the hair is a-plenty and so far this vacuum has been amazing. I am thrilled with the product.

    Works good

I like this vacuum because it is not quite as noisy when emptying. I have 2 big dogs that shed a lot. The vacuum is advertised the bin can hold 60 days worth of debris. Since my dogs shed so much, it must be emptied at least twice a week. Dog hair also clogs up the rollers. Other than the dog hair issue, it works good and would buy another Shark in the future.

    This thing is amazing!

I got this as a gift for my mom, and I was hesitant to put a chunk of money into a robot vacuum.. but man oh man! me and my mom have been watching it clean for a few minutes now and i’ve sprinkled some crumbs and the robot sucked it right up!! I absolutely love this! The vacuum doesn’t hit the walls or furniture but gets close enough to clean small spaces. It is very quiet and sounds like white noise. The set up was easy peasy, and over all the best thing ever! Great worth of my money!!

Impressive — A Must-Have Smart Vacuum for Pet Owners with Vinyl Flooring!

We’ve had the Shark AI Ultra Voice Control Robot Vacuum for 30 days now, and it’s our second vacuum first time buying Shark. The upgrade to the 60-day storage bin has been a game-changer, especially with two dogs that shed. The larger bin means I don’t have to empty it constantly, which is a huge time-saver. The Matrix Clean Navigation is impressive—it moves efficiently across our vinyl flooring, covering every inch of the space while avoiding obstacles with ease. The home mapping feature ensures it knows exactly where it’s been and where it needs to go, making cleaning more thorough and systematic. I also love that the roller and brushes don’t get jammed like our previous vacuum did. This vacuum has been much more reliable in that regard! We’ve used the spot-clean feature in our entryway where our dogs and people come in, and it’s fantastic for quickly cleaning up dirt, mud, or pet hair without having to run a full cleaning cycle. The “no-go zone” feature is great, too—allowing me to block off areas I don’t want the vacuum to go, like around the dog bed or delicate furniture. The scheduling option is seamless, running at the perfect time each day without me having to do anything. Plus, with voice control, I can ask it to start cleaning while I’m in another room or even from my phone when I’m not at home. This robot vacuum has been a lifesaver for keeping our vinyl floors spotless with minimal effort, especially with all the shedding and constant foot traffic in the entryway. If you’re a pet owner or just want an efficient, smart vacuum, I highly recommend this one!

    Better than expected!

We just got this for Christmas and are very pleased. The setup was quick and easy. The app allowed me to design of map of the rooms. We had it clean each on separate runs to see how much it would pick up. We were excited to see how effective it was. The app is very easy to use, as well. The device doesn’t even get stuck when going over the tassles on our area rugs. It also crosses thresholds with relative ease. We’re very pleased and looking forward to not having to sweep and vacuum the downstairs every few days due to our longhair cat.

Setup takes time but works good once set up.

Our Shark came with a minimum of instructions for set up and one “catch” was we had to use the 2.5g on our phone to the WiFI router and NOT the 5g, which we figured out eventually after some online study. Once our shark “JAWS” was synched, it took it about half an hour to map the upper floor. And so far it works great. My wife loves it and she is not a tech person. We have not yet figured out how to do the second floor, but this is only our first day. I will update later.

No more cleaning, it’s a Christmas miracle

The media could not be loaded. I’ll update over time, to help make the money worth it. First review, damn it’s cool. We mapped the house at night and our place is pretty dark already so I did put a ring light underneath lifted furniture to help it see when it first explored the house. It was stupid accurate for only having gone through the house for a brief period. Ankle biter is also so quiet, especially compared to the roomba we had that was approaching 5 or so years in age…. Eek! As for the first cleaning, we have a dog who sheds constantly and a long hair cat who is also shedding constantly, so think allergy central and “I will never have clothes not covered in fur again…” Ankle biter did LAPS around what our roomba, even when we first got it, was able to collect. It also travels in a super organized manner which satisfies me greatly, I was tired of getting woken up at 9am to the ungraceful sounds of the roomba trying to remodel the kitchen with its battering ram. We have a dining table that is a nightmare to traverse unless you move all the chairs out of the way, not only did Ankle biter map it as floor space but it also vacuumed there without trying to eat the legs off all of our chairs! Our house has some not so sharp ledges and bumps that are a little hard for a regular robot to try and get over, but ankle biter has big wheels to help get over ledges. (Not gracefully but it sure does get its way around.) So far so good! I love this, bought it on sale as a Christmas gift for my family and everyone loves it. Even the cat, who was too scared of our thunderous roomba to go near it but wants to play with Ankle biter super badly.

    George and Al

Bought first for combination of laminate, tile and carpeted floors with area rugs and multiple door thresholds. Shark robot (named him George) had no issues navigating through house, under tables and chairs. Scheduled to vacuum at night while sleeping upstairs. Great to come down to all of downstairs vacummed. Liked so much I bought a second (named Al) for upstairs which is scheduled to vacuum during the day while I’m out running around. Was concerned that Al might have issues being based on carpet, but he navigated from and back to, then docked perfectly on base. Cleaned stair landing with no issues and didn’t fall down the stairs (I was concerned I might need a baby gate for him). Had considered either a puppy or a man for Christmas, but very happy to have George and Al instead (don’t have to walk, entertain or clean up after – they clean up after me) Now if Shark could come up with someway to do stairs.

Beat out a Eufy and a Roborock

This beat out two other major brands – Eufy L60 and Roborock Q5 Max+ First, let me start with some of the “bad” – but please note that while there’s quite a bit I’m going to list, it’s all mostly small stuff and most of it has to do with the app. Cons – App is “okay” at best. Mapping works – but it’s not the best at defining rooms. When you want to build / merge / delete rooms – you can only do it in resizable “squares” – meaning if you have an odd shaped room you need to fill it with a bunch of these squares and then merge them all together. The app doesn’t display actual battery life – only in increments of 10% Initial setup was a bit annoying – it wouldn’t connect to the app, had to restart it, needed to be at 50% charge to start mapping, but even when the app said it was 50% – it wouldn’t work right away. Can’t see live location on the map, or where it has already cleaned / pathed. Okay – that was a lot, but nothing truly major Pros – The self empty base works wonders. It fully empties the vac each time, and really makes it so I can go longer periods without doing anything. The vacuum just plain works. My house is mostly hard flooring with a couple rugs. I have 5 animals that shed like crazy. This is the only vacuum that actually picks up the fur, especially on the hard floors. It’s not very loud Navigating works well – it sticks within the room boundaries, avoids no-go zones, and doesn’t get stuck. Climbs over small obstacles with ease. I previously tried the Eufy L60 and while it worked for a couple days, I eventually noticed that it was just pushing the fur around more than it was sucking it up. Next, I ordered both the Shark and Roborock, but tried the Shark first. After a week of complete satisfaction with it, I decided to try the Roborock. Like the Eufy, the Roborock had a phenomenal app. Very intuitive, the mapping worked amazing, etc. But also like the Eufy, the actual performance was subpar. I had it run in the living room + kitchen twice, a couple hours after the Shark. It barely picked up any fur. So the tl;dr of this is – while the Shark’s app is a bit more limited and the mapping isn’t as great – the actual performance of the Shark makes up for it. The Eufy and Roborock have fantastic apps and mapping, but that doesn’t matter when I can run them two or three times and not be able to tell that they did anything. My suggestions to the Shark dev team though would be just to improve the app a bit. Minor improvements would go a long way – show true battery % instead of increments of 10% – allow me to define a room using straight lines, not just squares. It’s now been 2 weeks of using the Shark, I haven’t actually vacuumed once myself. If that isn’t proof of good results then I don’t know what is.

My daughter received an empty box. Too small to even for this item. It either happened at their distribution center or in fed ex hands. The product does work well. That’s why I ordered one for my daughter.

Worked great for a few months but a year after purchase and the machine will not recharge. Changed batteries but still does not charge. Has been sitting on docking station lifeless for a couple of months now. Very disappointed. A family members earlier model Roomba has been thriving for over 5 years. Very disappointed this didn’t last a year.

    Do not buy

Purchased vacuum to make my life easier. Vacuum got struck initially frequently .. once it learned the house and we set boundaries we got through that phase. Vacuum would only run for a little over an hour would then need to go to station to charge. So vacuum would constantly be on/off throughout the day (1500sq ft of space). In 60 days of use the roller bar would constantly get stuck with nothing in the way.. would just error. We were taking vacuum apart every other day due to this error. So after 70 days of use I called Amazon for help… given out of 30 day warranty unable to help. Called Shark.. they are allowing me to return item. I would have been better off just buying a new vacuum than this robot vacuum. I’ve been too much time setting it up, repeatedly fixing it, on the phone trying to get help, and now shipping it back. I would not recommend this vacuum.

    Good value but not miraculous

The vacuum does what it advertises: it automates cleaning. I’m not sure exactly what I expected but while it’s quite impressive, the app doesn’t seem to support multiple floors, and the battery doesn’t last very long. The device sometimes jams up small rugs or repeatedly hits tables, but it gets itself out of what it gets itself into. It’s not very quiet, but it’s easy to use. All-in-all don’t have too high expectations but there’s nothing necessarily wrong with it.

    Very disappointing

The first issue apparently many people run into is getting the vacuum connected, I tried all of the troubleshooting steps, but it would just not work with my S22, I was ready to box it back but decided to try my S8 tablet and was able to get it connected. While trying to get it setup I had several error codes stating that the vacuum was full, or the path was blocked even through it was not – it had not been used yet. The next issue is it seems to use time or distance, not the AI or any sensor, to determine when it is full because it gets over full before it empties itself. The MAJOR issue is while it says it has a self-cleaning brush, the brush does stay relatively clean, however, the end with the drive gets completely tangled to the point where it jams up and the brush needs to be taken out so you can untangles and remove all of the hair – this happens at least once every time it runs and it usually stops under a bed or something and will not even return the base until it fix it. You can see this in the picture – that was after a 30 minute run. …but the final straw was the vacuum disconnected, and I could not get it connect again – tried resetting everything but still no luck so back in the box and back to Amazon. It’s really a shame, the cleaning algorithm it way better than Rumba’s – it took half the time to clean our house and did a better job but if you have to attend to it every 30 minutes or so because of a design flaw it defeats the purpose of having a robot vacuum.

Only 1 scheduled clean per day allowed

All in all this vac does a good job. The manual says that it returns to dock every 30 minutes in order to empty….it does NOT! Also, only allowing 1 scheduled clean per day seems odd for that to be limited. Both of these features would greatly benefit my multi German shepherd household. Hopefully at some point there will be an update and we will be able to program more than one scheduled cleaning per day.

    Works Well

The positives: Items relatively quiet. Much less than my iRobot. It cleans well on both hard floors and carpet. It figured out my home layout quickly and it seems to have a systematic pattern to cleaning unlike my Robot. The negatives: the battery runs out too quickly and takes forever to charge. I’m only cleaning 1200 sq feet, and it can’t ro that in less than 8 hours. The vacuums auto empty feature gets easily clogged. I can’t find a cancel feature once the robot goes back home to charge. Overall I like it but it need some enhancements.

It will continue to clean if I tell it in the app until I get the error again. Every 5 minutes. It is also unable to find the base to dock. I have tried to remap the house and it still has problems. Also runs into everything kinda clumsy Battery seems pretty good. I wouldn’t buy this again.

Bought 2. Just a few MONTHS later BOTH have issues.

I am extremely disappointed. I have always been satisfied with Shark products, have found them to do a good job and be of good quality, until this: These are our 3rd and 4th shark robots. Apparently one of these is a refurbished model – which was not on the listing from which I purchased it or I would not have done so. The first has a “side brush is stuck” issue, which has been determined to be the result of a faulty part. The second suddenly sounds as if it’s eaten a driveway of rocks (it hasn’t). So we have contacted Shark, who has now developed a process of passing us off one to another, etc. Then Amazon (who from the response to my message didn’t seem to have read the accompanying chat script) did the same. No one seems to know who is responsible.

Worked great for a year, constant error a week after warranty…

This was a nice robot vacuum to have and we enjoyed it because it cut down on having to vacuum so often and if guests were coming over we could run it in high traffic areas and go on about our business. A week after the 1-year warranty was up I got a constant “side brush obstructed” error when nothing was in the way. Cleared it completely out and realized the side brush mechanism wasn’t spinning freely/forced turned in either direction. The other one spun freely as it should. The spin brush mechanism that makes it spin freely has gone out and now I can’t use it because the error stops the vacuum dead in it’s tracks…. Buy the extended warranty apparently…

Vacuum works fine, Software leaves a bit to be desired.

I have used this vacuum for about 2 weeks now. It does a good job cleaning both carpeted floors and hard floors. This is a dry vacuum only. My biggest beef is with the phone app. Once set up you can add a schedule for cleaning, but you can not change the schedule or delete the schedule. I first set it up to clean 3 days a week. After 2 weeks, I wanted to change this to two days per week. No where does the phone app let me change a schedule or delete a schedule and create a new schedule. Also, this unit cannot clean the entire house on a single charge so it goes back to the base to recharge. It then recleans areas that have already been cleaned. So it takes most of the day to complete the cleaning. The app only lets you look at the most recent completed task so I can’t see all of it’s starting and stopping. You would think that the phone app would be able to display some history of the cleaning. Like how many times it needed to recharge for each cleaning. Shark can and needs to do better.

I’ve had several robots over the years…all had had their issues but worked well enough to be helpful to keep the floors clean. This one! BUY IT! It does NOT run over things it shouldn’t (unless it’s like a kid sock or something), the house mapping in app is FANTASTIC, it actually goes back to the dock, recharges, and continues to clean the entire 2000 sq ft of downstairs space, and it empties out on it’s own and you don’t even have even have to empty it for a month! I empty one a week. I’m buying one for my upstairs too! Moms, YOU WILL LOVE IT!

great and poor at the same time

The good: The robot works great. It’s almost replaced our need to manually vacuum. Mapping- nailed very large area on first try. Suface transition- It goes over 7 different surfaces in our main area (Hardwood, high and low pile carpets, slate, regular and thick Mexican clay tile), and all the transitions between them. LOVE IT. Why 3 stars? No-Go zones don’t function, per MANY other reviews. Can’t schedule specific room. Its all or nothing, an idiotic limitation. Either of these are almost efficient to return it.

    Shark robot vacuum

We have had it six months, and I would love to send it somewhere for service, but I cannot find any place to send it on the Shark web site. I should say, that for the first month or so, it was great. We have pets, so it was wonderful to not have to vacuum every day. Lately, it misses a LOT of stuff, pet fur and other messes, just doesn’t pick it up. Goes to spots it can’t get over, and repeatedly tries, even when unsuccessful. I wish I could edit the map, but can only make a 10×10 ft area a “no go zone”, so I can’t do anything about making smaller spots to avoid. We have replaced all the brushes repeatedly. This was supposed to be perfect for pets. It was at first. SHOULD LAST LONGER THAN SIX MONTHS!! I AM TERRIBLY DISAPPOINTED!

    So far so good!

Right before this we tried out a Roomba Q052. It was our first time trying a robot vacuum and we did not like it. We returned it after two days because it did not do a good job due to lack of home mapping features. I didn’t realize how important home mapping is for robot vacuums! So after doing a lot of research I decided to try this one out! We got the Shark AI Ultra Voice Control robot. The first run, it learns the floor plan of your home. At first, it did not generate a good floor plan at all, so I left the house and had it try mapping again (this time with no humans or pets walking in front of it), and it mapped my floor plan very well. I like that it allows you to click and drag different areas to designate the rooms. I’ve had it do two full cleans now and I’m impressed. I have carpet in a couple rooms and hard wood in the rest of the house. It transitions nicely between the carpet and hard wood, and also can go over area rugs easily. You can schedule it to clean on specific days at specific times which is really nice, and also select specific rooms you want it to clean. Here are some minor drawbacks I’ve found: First, that circle thing sticking up on top of the robot is just high enough that it prevents it from being able to go all the way under some furniture. Second, it is kinda loud and squeaky. Not a big deal. I’d rather have a loud vacuum that’s good than a quiet vacuum that does a bad job, but that’s just me. Third, it misses some edges. Again, not the biggest deal. I’d rather it not ram into things like the roomba did. The shark stops just before it would run into something, turns, and continues, which causes it to miss some edges. Over all though, I think it’s great and will keep my floors pretty clean. I am mostly impressed with the home mapping part. I will report back with an updated review when I’ve had it for a bit longer. We’ll see how she holds up!

    Simply Doesn’t Work

Don’t waste your money. I’ve had a robot vacuum for about 12 years at this point. Samsung, Multiple Neato, and now this Shark. This shark has the worst interface of them all. The robot is supposed to have a “charge and resume” feature, but 3 months now of turning features on/off, completely resetting the robot, relearning the house, deleting the app, and setting it up as a new robot. But the robot vacuums for 5-15 min, the goes back to its base and pats itself on the back with a “mission complete” report literally showing is only did 5% of the house. It’s just garbage. Just Google Shark Robot not completing runs and see dozens of Reddit posts of everyone having this issue and others. Even if it is actually VACUUMED, which it doesn’t when it does it is the worst of all robot vacuums I have owned. Customer Service from Shark 2/10: Update 1: Reached out to Shark to try and fit it and warranty the item if needed. At no point did a ask for a replacement, only did what was instructed to try and get it fixed. After I called, it took 30min walking through the most basic steps possible with a Level 1 rep. Then…. 45 min on hold waiting for a level 2 tech (not something I asked for). This rep made me completely reproduce everything that I had gone through with the level 1 tech. At no point was there any actual diagnostics done by me or by the rep remotely. It felt like they were intentionally making the repair/warranty process painful just so people give up. The level 2 conversation was another 45 min. So nearly 2 hours after first speaking to someone, they agree it is not working correctly. You would think this would trigger the warranty claim, but no. A level 3 rep would need to call me….. later in the week? Really, after 2 hours of video conference of you literally seeing the machine do all the errors, stops, and failures. Sharks need even more people to see it? They already record the calls, why cant someone just review it? Update2: Level 3 called me at 10:30am on a Thursday. Shocker, I was working and could not answer. Update 3: I call back with my ticket number and speak to a level 1 rep again. He wants me to describe the problem, I let him know I already have a ticket. I tell him the ticket number, he pulls it up and then wants to diagnose. I politely refuse and let him know I was calling the Level 3 tech back, and that is who I would like to speak with. The level 1 rep then speaks to someone, and comes back saying they are going to warrant the item and ship a portion of a new robot (yes portion, not a replacement robot). BUT…. I would have to pay a shipping/service fee. Which is a slap in the face. This unit has likely never worked correctly and has cost me multiple hours of my time this week alone, just to get to this point. There was no good reason this process should have taken +2 hours. They could have asked for a 2-minute video proof of it not working and a 2-minute form to accomplish literally everything we went over in multiple hours. I calmly explain why I would much rather have had my original robot work, I literally don’t want a new one, I want mine to work, and it is Shark choosing to do a replacement, not me. So No, I would not pay any fee. He went away and came back saying they will “wave” the fee. I’ll update once the pieces of the replacement robot come in.
