Real Customer Insights on the Samlex Power Supply: Pros and Cons You Need to Know

Quiet and Dependable Functionality – Jim B shares that the Samlex power supply has impressively low noise levels and has proven to be “stable and reliable” for a year of use. He appreciates the excellent sound quality facilitated by the power supply, highlighting that it comfortably fits into any ham radio setup without interfering noise.

Powerful Workhorse for High Demand – Worshipguitar describes the unit as a “fantastic power supply” capable of handling loads efficiently in a moderate temperature environment. With consistent performance between 15-20 amps, this user’s experience showcases the robust capability of the power supply for substantial workloads.

Compact Design with No Compromise on Performance – Elderhigh, who owns four units, praises the Samlex power supply’s compact design yet mighty performance. The power supply delivers “stable voltage and current” without RF interference, making it highly suitable for diverse amateur radio applications.

Noisy Fan Detracts from Performance – A key point from an Amazon Customer is the intrusively noisy fan that activates after about 20 minutes of operation, even at a light 150mA draw. This affects the overall usability as the user notes, “the volume on the receiver must be turned up,” demonstrating a dissatisfaction with the device’s operating noise.

Overvalued for Features Provided – RandomUser highlights pricing issues and feels the product is “far above what you can buy it for new” elsewhere. Although functional, this leaves users questioning the value received against the investment, affecting overall customer satisfaction.

These collective insights reflect both appreciation and criticism surrounding the Samlex power supply. While commendable for its low noise emissions and stable output suitable for ham radio enthusiasts, the price and fan noise have raised concerns among some users.

Had to replace a 35 yo Astron Linear PS that was making to much buzzing noise from the transformer and taking too much space. This unit is small, very silent, and I did not find any switching RFI in my radio. (TS590SG) When the fan kicks in, it’s a bitter louder than what I’d like, but it really does not happen very often. For the price, you cant ask much more.

People find the following negative one quite helpful. Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2020 by Amazon Customer, titled “Very Noisy”
The fan comes on in this unit after about 20 minutes and only drawing 150ma. When it does come on, it very noisy and the volume on the receiver must be turned up. While the unit does put out the correct voltage, and has not failed, the cheap noisy fan makes me wonder if the rest of the unit is also cheaply made.

    Great Power Supply

I had previously been running a cheap power supply with my GMRS base station. Tightened up my installation and added this power supply. Good clean power for ham or GMRS radios. Will pick another one of these up soon.

Nice compact supply and well built.

I’ve had this since my Icom PS125 gave up on me. Since I was already using a switching supply this was an easy choice and recommended highly by a friend. Over 2 years in service and not a blip. The fan never kicked in at my old location, but recently it has on occasion, and sensitive radio mics may pick up the fan noise. Due to the slim case they obviously can’t use a bigger one that would be quieter. As for switching noise, none has been noted, and I’ve used it with rigs from HF through UHF. One minor thing is the strange posts used for the DC output, but I believe someone makes a pigtail that adapts them to the popular Anderson PowerPole connectors. Minor gripe and I’d almost forgotten about it. If I remember right Samlex did include connectors for bare wire at least.

I consistently run this at a 15-20 amp load. Fantastic power supply. I will strongly advise to run this device in a moderate temperature evironment as the instructions state. I found that if used at 80 degrees or above, the fan continues to run with no load and until the room cools down. Nothing wrong with device. You won’t be disappointed.

Small is not always best. In my case the size of this power supply was perfect.

I have always been told that switching power supplies have a lot of noise in some receivers. I now have 3 of these power supplies on my HF radio, my VHF/UHF radio and a separate UHF radio. The HF radio is used exclusively on FT8 and has no problem except for atmospheric noise that I have no control on. The other 2 power supplies are used on FM radios who have some noise discrimination already. There are working very well for me.

    Good power supply, low noise

I have seen several people complain about loud fan noise, but compared to the fan on my radio this is nearly silent. Under heavy duty cycle it will spin up, but I do not find it to be bothersome at all. The 12V supply has been stable and reliable for the last year, and I do not have any complaints of noise at all from receiving parties. In fact several have commented on sound quality, so no interference noted so far. It would be nice if the meters had a back light, but I have not found that a necessity. I’m glad I listened to an experienced Elmer and bought a Samlex.

Arroja los 13.8V en forma precisa y con un nivel de ruido bastante bueno, solo tiene ciertos picks de ruido al encender el ventilador cuando alcanza mucha temperatura.
