Roomba j9+ robot vacuum with P.O.O.P. guarantee avoiding pet waste

Under the Microscope: Evaluating the Product’s Pluses and Minuses

The Roomba J9+ appears to be a device that has garnered a mix of praise and criticism from users. Among its positive aspects, customers appreciate the improved cleaning performance, especially when compared to previous models like the S7+. One user mentioned, “Cleans much better than the S7+ it replaced, and runs longer on a charge.” The J9+ also features interchangeable parts with older models, which is a convenient aspect for those who are upgrading from a previous Roomba. Users have noted the J9+’s proficiency in navigating around the house, with its mapping capabilities being highlighted as efficient. For instance, one user shared, “This thing is pretty accurate and does a great job. Mapping takes forever, and it can get pretty loud but [it’s a] great machine.” The object avoidance feature has also been commended, with a customer noting that it provides pictures of what it avoided, which they found to be a neat addition. Furthermore, the robot vacuum’s ability to pick up pet hair has been met with approval, a feature that is crucial for pet owners. The vacuum’s ease of setup has been praised as well, as one user happily stated, “MO (yes, I named it) was super easy to set up.” For those concerned about battery life and suction power, the J9+ has received positive remarks. One review noted that it has more suction and a longer battery life compared to the J7, though this does come with a caveat regarding increased noise levels. Additionally, the ability of the Roomba J9+ to integrate with home networks, after initial setup issues, has been reported to work flawlessly.
Despite the aforementioned strengths, the Roomba J9+ has not been without its problems. One of the more serious complaints includes a unit that was “Dead on arrival – $600 piece of garbage,” according to a disappointed customer who faced battery issues from the get-go. There have also been reports of difficulties during the initial setup process, particularly with app connectivity. A user expressed frustration, “Both the J7 and J9 wouldn’t connect to my Google Pixel 7 pro via Bluetooth.” Additionally, customer service has been cited as unhelpful in resolving these issues. Some users have encountered problems with the Roomba’s ability to clean certain types of debris effectively. One review stated, “The Suction power seems to be fine, but the fact that the brush/rollers used are rather useless at picking up dust, dirt, and hair.” Furthermore, issues with emptying the bin, particularly with cat litter, have been a source of inconvenience for users, requiring manual intervention. Concerns have also been raised about the robot’s durability and intelligence. Some customers have reported that the device is prone to getting stuck and has difficulty completing a full cleaning cycle without encountering errors, such as “Error 2 – Brushes Need Cleaning error on Carpet.” Lastly, there have been remarks about the product feeling unfinished, with one user expressing regret, “I do not want to beta test your unfinished product.” This sentiment echoes the frustrations of several customers who expected more from the high-end robot vacuum.

The most helpful positive feedback Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2023 by J. Edmondson, and is titled “A succesor to my S9”
I’ve had this just for a day, but I know this robot is going to surpass my S9+. I have a J6+ in my office and it’s NEVER gotten stuck in 6 months of ownership. Its dodged cords, dog toys and blankets that have fallen on the floor. This robot has been doing the same, the suction is like my S9, however the side brush doesn’t get crushed like the S9 did on carpet. Mapping my house used to take 3 hours on the S9, with this robot it did it in half that. The method for mapping has changed and it speeds it up. The map is accurate, LIDAR wasn’t needed. It picks up all my dog hair and sand from when I visit the beach. I bought it for $599 early black friday deal Nov 2023.

I got this to replace my Roomba I have had for years It still works great but it is very loud and has no obstacle detection at all I just got a puppy so that is important to me After doing some research I decided to go for the top of the line J Right off the bat it had problems It leaves the base and stops for over a minute then starts again for a while then wants the bin emptied Its brand new and has never run nothing is in the bin Once I got it to run for a while after several time of restarting it from the base it started to map my house I went into a few rooms fine most it did about half then left never to return Nothing I could figure out would make it map or even try to enter the unmapped part of my house I googled this problem and found lots of people complaining about the same thing with the J The only answer was keep running it and hope it smartens up or wait for a update at some point I’m not paying what I paid for this

Question Bank: Providing the Answers You Seek

How does the self-emptying feature work, and how often do I need to change the bag? The self-emptying feature is designed to allow the vacuum to automatically transfer the collected debris into the Clean Base® Automatic Dirt Disposal unit after each cleaning session. This process ensures you don’t have to manually empty the robot vacuum’s bin after each use. The bag inside the Clean Base® can hold up to 60 days’ worth of dirt and debris, depending on usage and household conditions. When full, the bag can be easily removed, disposed of, and replaced with a new one. Can this robot vacuum navigate and clean multiple floors in a home? Yes, this robot vacuum is capable of Smart Mapping, which allows it to learn, map, and adapt to your home’s floor plan. However, it cannot physically move itself up or down stairs. If you have multiple floors, you’ll need to manually place the robot on each floor you want it to clean. It will then create a separate smart map for each floor, allowing for customized cleaning jobs. Is the vacuum compatible with voice assistants, and how can I integrate it into my smart home? Yes, the vacuum is compatible with voice assistants such as Amazon Alexa. You can integrate it into your smart home by connecting it to your Wi-Fi network and linking it to your voice assistant device through the corresponding app. Once linked, you can start, stop, or schedule cleaning sessions with simple voice commands. What is the P.O.O.P. guarantee, and how does it work? The P.O.O.P. (Pet Owner Official Promise) guarantee is a commitment from iRobot that this robot vacuum will avoid pet waste while cleaning. If the robot does encounter a pet-related accident and fails to avoid it, iRobot will replace the vacuum. This guarantee requires registration and is subject to certain terms and conditions that can be found on the iRobot website. How does the vacuum deal with different types of flooring, like hardwood and carpet? The vacuum is equipped with a feature that automatically adjusts its suction power when transitioning from one floor type to another. It delivers a stronger suction on carpets to lift trapped pet hair and debris, while on hardwood or tile floors, it adjusts to prevent scattering of debris and to ensure efficient pickup. Can I set boundaries or no-go zones for the vacuum? Yes, through Smart Mapping technology, you can set up virtual boundaries or no-go zones within the companion app. These zones tell the robot vacuum where it should not go, which is particularly useful for keeping it away from pet bowls, clutter, or areas with delicate items. How long does the battery last, and what happens if the vacuum runs out of power during a cleaning session? The vacuum has a battery life of up to 180 minutes on a single charge, which should be sufficient for most homes. If the battery runs low during a cleaning session, the vacuum will automatically return to its charging base to recharge. Once recharged, it can resume cleaning where it left off, ensuring the entire space is cleaned without manual intervention.

    don’t waste your money

It doesn’t stay connected to WiFi (the base is right next to our modem), it doesn’t consistently charge so it needs attention throughout each day & the compartment needs to be emptied multiple times each day. The best part is that iRobot won’t recognize our serial number & we get no support/service! When it actually does work it does a marginal job vacuuming. This is hands-down one of the worst purchases I have ever made.

Low durability. Bad battery. They keep breaking

I had two iRoomba now. The quality and durability is questionable. Both broke right after the 1 year warranty expired and the customer support just offers some discount to buy a new one or a fairly costly repair. We don’t use it excessively. We have a dog and we have it run every other day in our living room to pickup some of the hair. The battery seems to be the problem. I have to clean the contacts every week but, even if I do that, after one year the battery dies. It’s very flimsy

    NO WARRANTY ON THIS ITEM

WARNING!!!!!!! I purchased this iRobot vacuum about 2 weeks ago. This was supposed to be my 60th birthday present. I had an issue of the vacuum not having the suction power to pick up small particles on the floor. When I called iRobot about this issue, they informed my that this seller, Deal-Center, is NOT an authorized re-seller for iRobot so my vacuum is NOT COVERED UNDER THEIR WARRANTY. So ……. I am sending this vacuum back to the seller and I am completely done with iRobot because they do not stand behind their product if purchased off of Amazon.

    Does not avoid pet waste

We have only had this roomba for a few months. It has worked about as expected. The mapping ability isn’t that accurate but the biggest problem we have has is the “avoid obstacles” feature. We have a puppy that is not fully house trained yet and, unbeknownst to us, she left a mess in the floor downstairs where our roomba was cleaning. The Roomba ran straight through it, smearing the dog mess all over our floors and rugs. The worst part, however, is that the Roomba itself is packed with poop. We have taken everything apart that we are able to, but there is still dog poop packed inside every nook and cranny. We will most likely have to throw it out. Big, disappointing waste of money.

    Sucks for real

We’ve had NOTHING but issues with this very expensive tool. It just stops in various places, can’t find it’s way home and constantly requires to have the wheels de-haired. Total disappointment. We got this because it was touted as a positive force in cleaning pet hair. Total lie. Save your money. Buy a vacuum or even a broom.

    Never stays connected to Wi-Fi

I’ve spent more time connecting this unit to Wi-Fi then it’s actually spent cleaning my house. I’ve owned many of these models but this one is clearly just disappointing. I think it’s time to switch brands. Do yourself a favor and select another product.

    IRobot Roomba j9

There is no comparison between my original i3 and my new j9. The battery life was never as good. I was constantly cleaning the i3 and the j9 requires very little attention. I’m glad I decided to pay extra for the quality and efficiency of the j9. I have back trouble and was looking for a Roomba that would not require much assistance. Absolutely love the j9!!!

    Nice Upgrade from 980 Series

Our iRobot 980 Series vacuums were getting old and we decided to upgrade to the J9+ Series. The 980’s were great, but the J9+ Series is superior. The mapping system is fantastic, there is a choice of vacuum suction, which apparently saves battery life if high isn’t needed and these are extremely quiet compared to the old model. We haven’t needed Tech support, which is another reason to buy! Value for the money is a personal choice, but we are glad we didn’t buy a cheaper model or brand.

Great suction, but not a smart as the i8+

I replaced my i8+ for the j9+. I have a miniature husky that sheds all year long. The i8+ did a half decent job of keeping up (Daily job for the first floor) but, over time the vacuum seemed to pickup less. So, in came the j9+. The j9+ has incredible suction, maybe 50% more than the i8+. I moved my i8+ down to my finished basement and runs every other day and has a lot less fur buildup down there. Now the cons of the j9+. It’s dumb, very dumb. Since this model uses a camera, it will take picture of potential obstacles as the job runs. After the job, you have to review the images and specify if it’s a temp. obstacle, not an obstacle or you don’t know. Well, for about 3 months straight it would take the same picture of a power strip with many cords going to it. The problem is, that this power strip sits between my bedroom wall and nightstand, with about 7 inches from wall to stand. The robot can’t even get to it and yet it flags it as an obstacle, even though every time I review , I choose NOT an obstacle and ignore. The other issue with the camera, is that every now and then a single strand of my dogs fur will get stuck on it and cause the job to error out or lose it’s sense of direction. The final complaint is the is the lack of intelligence when the job needs to pause and re-charge. It’s not smart enough to go back and charge up enough to finish the job and will take multiple re-charge trips back and forth before the job is done. My i8+ was always smart enough to know how much to charge to finish the job and no back and forth. My last comment is about iRobot as a company, it seems their software development is only on the combo models and the j9+ has not received any software updates since I bought it November 2023. The i8+ also has not received any updates since November. Now the Amazon is not buying them, I have a feeling their budget for continuing improvements will only get worse. If iRobot does not turn things around in the next year, then I’m going to look at competitors like Shark, etc. when my 3 iRobots eventually die.

    Constantly fails

I have had this less then six months, so far I have over 60 emails to tech support and a replacement unit that was brand new and it still doesn’t work. By far the biggest waste of money I’ve had on a robot vacuum. It is worse then any shark I’ve had and hardly ever does what it supposed to. DONT BUY!!!! Don’t waste your money

Worse performance in every regard compared to our old 900 series. Don’t waste your money. Gets stuck all the time, forgets its map, takes forever to finish a job, leaves behind a lot of debris, overall not a good product. I would be a lot more upset if I hadn’t used a gift card to pay for most of it.

Love the fact that it recharges and empties itself.

This is my second robot. The technology gets better with each vacuum. The vacuum does not run over water on the floor. It notifies you after vacuuming that there was an obstacle in it is was. You have the option to tell it if is temporary or permanent and to stay away from it.

    Works alright when it works

We’ve had this irobot about 3-4 mos now. Worked well a few times. Constantly needs troubleshooting now. Yes, the bin has been emptied. This is our first robot vacuum and we waited many years and did not by an entry level model, in hopes all the bugs would be worked out. They’re not. And this was an expensive splurge for us. Right now, it’s sitting in the middle of the bedroom, just lost in the sauce. And everyone’s worried about AI taking over! Hahaha! We gotta long way to go when our irobot can’t even vacuum the dang house. Bless. ~the wife

Broke with poor support and terrible mapping!

Had this 9 weeks and the cleaning head module had to be replaced. It was used less than 6 times in total in a ~1400 sq foot home! Could not return the unit. iRobot support was horrible, but they eventually sent the replacement part. Suction was worse after replacing. The mapping is terrible! It runs into stuff and has issues all of the time, such as not being able to figure out where it is and thinking vents are “cliffs”. I cannot run unattended. I must be around to fix it at least twice every vacuum. We don’t have a complex home with stuff laying around. This device and the support are horrible! I wish I could get my money back!!!!!

I like this irobot, especially that it empties itself. I’ve already had to empty it (dog & human hair) and it was very easy to do. I feel like I couldn’t clean my house with the irobot!

You have better things to do than sweeping like me? Yeah, read this.

This will clean your floors 90% of the time, everytime. This robot vacuum works fantastic. The app is easy to use and interface with and gives you lots of information. It maps your house very thoroughly and gives you information on how much dirt is in whatever location. This is like the terminator of robot vacuums. Yes of courses we all know you still have to do some slight cleaning by yourselves because the robot cannot get into tight corners and what not but I would say that it does a very thorough job. Now there are different settings on it like the suction, so it is noticeably quieter when you have it set the lower suction setting, but the higher suction setting actually vacuums better. But then at the same time sacrificing battery life. I prefer to use the higher setting because the robot will go back home and recharge and the cleaning once it’s charged and keep doing that until it’s finished with the entire floor of your house. This works fabulous especially if you have pets. This model is designed for that. So you can say “hasta la vista” to dirt. The dog is occasionally mildly amused by it, and the cat completely ignores it. I was kind of hoping the cat would ride around on it like a speeder on Endor, but he seems to consider it more of an irrelevant nuisance. I highly suggest this product and it works great. Very satisfied.

    DON’T Waste Your Money!!

This is the biggest waste of money I’ve ever committed. We previously had the 860 and it became unreliable so we decided to upgrade. Big mistake! This new model is just as unreliable as the 6 yr old broke down model. The first month it worked great, even better than the previous model. After about a month, it no longer could complete a job without getting stuck or just randomly stopping. Sometimes it doesn’t charge even though I wipe the sensors daily. It’s supposed to get smarter but it gets dumber by the day. My floors look terrible everyday because this paper weight won’t do its job. If I want my floors clean I have to run another vac to get it done because this one is worthless! Changing rollers and brushes and cleaning this unit doesn’t help. I’m done with iRobot.

    Great product

Roomba may be a bit more expensive than other brands, but they work great. This new version is much quicker and quieter than older models. I didn’t think I needed the auto empty but it is pretty neat.

    Good, but Not Great

It is good for light vacuum jobs for when you are in a hurry, but it requires more involvement than I expected. You have to constantly program the process of the vacuuming and clean yourself the edges and corners, if you really want to clean your house.

    Absolutly the worst!

This junk machine wouldn’t begin to learn the shape of my house’s rooms. It also wouldn’t vacuum up much either. It rolled over a piece of kleenex & left it rolled up, not sucked up! It’s the dumbest machine possible! A total waste of your time & money.

    Not great with pet hair

I have a j9+ it’s a nice vacuum. I also have a golden retriever. My home has a mixture of hardwood and carpet floors. The pet hair on the carpet will get rolled into little wads that I have to take my regular vacuum to clean up. Not sure if it’s an issue with the rollers not being rugged enough or not enough suction. Oftentimes when cleaning the bathroom when it encounters the shower rug, it gets labeled as a cliff and shuts down until rescued. The app is sometimes clunky and hard to use. But in the end it will eventually not throw an error and allow you to operate the vacuum. It’s not the best manual vacuum replacement, but I would recommend this vacuum to people. It dies a good job overall.

Not as good as my old 900 series.

The suction sucks. Well actually it doesn’t suck worth a hoot, even on high. It wanders all over with no rhyme nor reason. I think that camera system is the pits. Both my kids have the i7+ and lovem. Probably the much better buy at this juncture. There no handle to pick it up when it gets lost either. Has a great battery life though. But it has to because I have to run it two or three times over the same room to clean everywhere.

Cons: Unfortunately it doesn’t work in the dark. Our old rumba used to run at night but the camera needs the lights on to work. Hopefully they will add sensors that can navigate in the dark. Pros: Quieter. Better at mapping and navigation.

    Romba J9

Overall I am pleased with the vacuum. It cleans better than my previous 2 vacuums. It takes a bit longer than previous ones but that is not so important. Sometimes I wonder why it is moving as it does seems strange but it gets the job done. My only complaint at this early stage is the cost of the filter within the robot itself. That needs to be kept clean or strange things happen. I wish this filter was reuseable like on my previous vacuums. I have a lot of fine dust in the winter because of my wood burning fireplace which needs to be cleaned daily in the winter and this creates fine dust which fills the robot vacuum filter to the point that I find it best to use the main house vacuum to clean this filter daily. I think this will not be such an issue only warmer weather comes.

Too loud. Not great with excessive pet hair.

I upgraded my roomba 960 which I loved. The J9 dust bin broke on the 2nd run. The self emptying feature caused cat hair to get stuck sticking out of the bottom of the dust bin door. When it backed up it caught on the rug and snapped off. If you have excessive pet hair I’d recommend vacuuming normally first then running roomba every other day or so to keep up otherwise it doesn’t empty properly. Also the self emptying feature is loud. I clocked it in at 87 decibels! I tried putting it between my couch and a wall to dampen the sound. It has trouble finding the base sometimes but still runs without issues about 80% of the time and it has helped with the sound.

Great vacuum, software works, needs laser or something to make it better in the dark

This is my first iRobot vac after living with a very old “dumb” robot vac for the longest. I wanted a great vac and didn’t care about mopping, so this seemed like the obvious choice. It really does a nice job and I don’t have to clean my wife’s hair out after every pass. My only wish is that it did a better job in the dark (including low light). It sometimes (not too often) gets stuck on things when it’s dark (or low light) that it would otherwise avoid if more light was present. iRobot left the laser off this version, which is a shame. I think it’d be much better with it. Still tho, I like it and I’m keeping it.

    What you should know

This was a replacement for an eight-year-old ROOMBA which I would not have replaced because it was working so well, except that our dog had a liquid poop on the rug and the old Roomba vacuumed it up resulting in such a disgusting mess that I had to throw the whole thing out. This one claims that it will avoid dog droppings, but you should know that it only works if there’s enough light for the camera to sense and that means no setting it to vacuum it at night when you’re asleep unless you want to leave the lights on. On the other hand, it is very quiet, so I don’t mind it going on during the day. The app is very easy to use but it would be nice if the vacuum came with some minimal instructions on how to clean it and remove the filters. Instead, you have to go onto the Internet to figure that out, and it’s different enough from previous Rumbas that You have to learn the new system. All in all, it’s a nice device, and I’m satisfied with it.

I used this robot for a total of 15 times before it started throwing error codes saying loss of suction. After doing all of the things IRobot told me to on their customer service line it still did not work. They also told me it needed a new part but they did not have any parts in stock since this was such a new product for them. I will be returning and going with another brand. Great robot vacuum!

I was a little hesitant to drop the money because I’ve never owned a robot vacuum but I am so glad I did. After it mapped my house and I made a few “very few” tweaks to the map, this little guy does an incredible job! Floors, carpet, door mats, everything! Has not got stuck and only issue was when it picked up a dryer sheet. Sent me a message there was an issue and showed me how to fix the problem! Afterwords it picked up where it left off and not another problem. The iRobot j9+ has been 100% worth the money and I just wish I had went with a robot vacuum years ago! Highly recommend this vacuum! And it is not loud at all, for a vacuum it’s pretty quiet actually, I can watch TV as it runs with no issue. When it empties its bin in the docking station it is loud for a second (think shop vac loud) but that’s only for a few seconds and expected.

I am so glad I upgraded

I had a much older version of the Roomba. I decided to upgrade because we have a lot of sawdust and dirt traffic into the house from the garage and the yard, and I wasn’t happy with how well it swept the floors. I am so happy I upgraded! This little guy does a much, much better job of sweeping the floors, goes back to home to empty his bin and then returns to finish his job, and can be scheduled to run whenever and whereever I want. I love it.
