What’s Good, Bad, and Ugly About the Self-Empty Robot Vacuum? An In-Depth Review
One user, Casey Johnson, was extremely satisfied with the Shark RV1001AE IQ Robot Self-Empty XL’s performance in a home with hardwood floors and pets, stating that it’s a “game changer” and “She definitely needs dumped every few days being that we have four dogs that shed. But she has no problem cleaning up all the dog hair twice a day for us. We absolutely love her.”
Another user, Stacey, emphasized the vacuum’s efficiency and convenience, expressing that it “keeps my first floor spotless, running it once or twice a day,” and plans to buy another for the second floor. The ease of setup was also a highlight, with Stacey noting, “It was a breeze to set up. Highly recommend.”
Desertrosebud, a senior citizen, praised the ease of use and the self-emptying feature, saying “Rosie works great and does a thorough job of cleaning my house… Rosie goes back to the base when needed to empty the debris into the bagless base container, then goes right back out to finish the job.”
On the downside, Vonnie mentioned that the vacuum “doesn’t pick up the dirt very well and doesn’t reach all the main spots,” requiring a second run with a traditional vacuum, which was disappointing given the price.
Yaroslav Nikolenko expressed frustration with the robot’s functionality, stating it “doesn’t clean enough properly,” and faced issues with it “sometimes turns on nighttime very loud.” The connectivity issues also made it difficult to use, as it “sometimes disconnected from application and can’t be used.”
The stars speak of…
Opinions about this product were divided in such a proportion among the buyers.
This robot is working great for our family home so far. It has mapped the main floor perfectly. Each day it runs it gets better and better at getting every inch of the room area. We have used it for 1 week daily and each day I am surprised on how much pet hair and dust it picks up. I would recommend this product for this price range. Worth the money.
Not the worst but definitely not the best, doesn’t pick up the dirt very well and doesn’t reach all the main spots I got it for. I have to go over again with my own vacuum and that defeats the purpose especially for the price of it. Overall I’m not too thrilled with it if I’m being honest

Doesn’t work!
The media could not be loaded.

Quiet enough that it doesn’t bother my dogs
This thing is a bit of a mixed bag but it has one perfectly executed feature: it’s quiet enough that it doesn’t freak my easily excited dogs out, both in terms of vacuum noise and noise of it (not) bumping into walls and furniture. The build quality isn’t amazing. It’s fine, if somewhat flimsy feeling. It’ll probably last a few years but I wouldn’t expect it to withstand much abuse. It sometimes makes a wad out of some dog fur (two heavy shedders with medium length, fine fur) and gets it jammed in the beater brush. This stops the machine until a human clears the jam and is frustrating. The app. It’s hot garbage. Slow, clunky user interface. It takes 10-15 seconds to refresh to display current status and battery level. I use it only to schedule cleaning and otherwise leave it alone. Vacuum power. It’s good enough to pick up aforementioned dog fur. There’s not much else to pick up, so this is good enough. Battery lasts about 90 minutes for me, which is enough to clean the area I want (~750 square ft). Charging takes forever, though (2-3 hours). The dust collection base seems to work well but has several filters that are pretty small and collect very fine dust quickly. If they get clogged the machine won’t run until it’s all cleared out. Navigation. It makes nice straight patterns on the carpet. It will cleanse one room at a time before moving to the next (if you let it map the house out via the app and then assign rooms to each area at least). It can be sent to a specific room or rooms via the app. The “matrix” clean / multi-pass clean only is available one room at a time though. Would I buy another one? Maybe. If it ends up buying durable, then probably. If the app gets faster and more useful, that would be good, too.

Cleans well, but battery is very small
The vacuum does a good job of cleaning with an app that is easy to use, but it comes with a very small capacity battery. Just to clean my downstairs it has to return to recharge (which takes over 3 hours), then almost completely runs out of charge a second time trying to finish. My older Proscenic robot vacuum would clean the entire downstairs on one charge with 30% remaining, very disappointed with the Shark for such a silly oversite.

AMAZING!
I am so thoroughly impressed by this vacuum! Listen, I never leave reviews, but for this, I have to! I had a Roomba for 1 day. I couldn’t stand it. It was constantly getting stuck and would hardly pick anything up. I have a shark vacuum and a stick vacuum. I love them, so I figured why not try out a shark robot vacuum. This effortlessly mapped out entire home, gets into every nook and cranny and picks everything up in it’s path. It hasn’t gotten stuck once or rammed into anything (the Roomba did) and it even sensed a ledge and didn’t fall off. I can pick and choose what rooms I want it to clean, set a cleaning schedule, clean every room or spot clean. If the bin is full before the job is complete or the battery needs charged, it goes back it it’s base, then once empty or charged, it picks right back up where it left off. It’s also a lot quieter than the videos I watched online. If you have been searching high and low for a great robot vacuum and rely on honest reviews to help make up your mind (like I do), this is the winner, hands down. ADD TO CART AND CHECK OUT NOW! I cannot say enough great things about this. Shark knows what they are doing!

Jams
Jams every three minutes but nothing is the cause. It does not back up to charger by itself. JUNK

Problematic Software
This little sweeper can work without it, but there are major problems with the software and app connectivity to use all the features you’re paying for. It’s been a month and not even tech support could get it to connect to my app.

Not a gift, however!
Good reason to keep things picked up. We’ve only had it a couple of weeks, but it will be great.

Love. Love. Love.
I needed to update my robot vacuum and this one didn’t disappoint! It doesn’t jump bump around and miss places! This is a smart little guy! It vacuums in straight lines so no floor space is missed. It will run until the battery runs out and then it will return to the station and recharge. Once it is fully recharged, it will return to where it left off and continue until done. The robot will also return to the station midway through to empty if it fills up before it completes the event. Once it empties, it will return to where it left off and continue until done. Overall, I love this machine and I would highly recommend.

So awesome
Bought this for my boyfriend who has a black lab. This thing works so well and is very easy to use. We love it.
GERALDINE FERNANDO –
Okay
At first i really loved it. We have it at setting everyday at the same time and it’ll start cleaning and i love that. However after 3 months it wont clean the whole house anymore. It will clean one spot then go back to dock after 5 mins. I cleaned the filter, changed it and remap it but it still wont clean the whole house anymore. It still work but it’s just not cleaning how it was cleaning before.

Lifesaver for a home with kids and dogs!
I love that once the map was done I could send Tony to any area or room that needed work. I have it run in the hallway and my bedroom constantly because I can’t stand seeing my dogs light colored fur on our dark wood floors. The only thing I don’t like and would love them to upgrade on the app is to hold more than one map. We have two stories and it would be great to be able to bring Tony downstairs and have him do his thing on a second map. I just brought him downstairs for the first time and have him running but there’s no way to send him to say just the kitchen since this floor isn’t mapped. Absolutely a great vacuum and I highly recommend.

AI shark ultra vacuum vs Roomba J7+
Let’s start out that I have two Golden Retrievers need I say more!!! I initially bought the Roomba J7+ but was not impressed with the vacuuming it did from hardwood floors to carpet. It would leave behind pet hair that it accumulated from the hardwood floors onto the carpet. After running them both, I have determined that the AI shark ultra is a better unit!! 1. The shark is quieter while cleaning than the Roomba. 2. The shark is quieter while self emptying than the Roomba. 3. The shark senses furniture versus the Roomba will bump into furniture. 4. The shark did not leave any dog hair during the transition from hardwood floors to carpet and the shark did an overall better job sweeping of the hardwood floors. 5. The shark did a better job vacuuming into harder to reach areas such as under barstools, in and around tables. 6. The shark has two swivel brushes on each side of it versus the Roomba only has one swivel brush. 7. Both have very easy initial set up app use 8. The Roomba seemed to not be able to run during the night in the dark. It needs to have lights on. The shark does not require lights. 9. The AI shark ultra is less expensive. 10. I felt the shark did a better job mapping because it gets into more harder to reach areas. 11. Remember to select “resume” when battery runs low on your app otherwise it won’t finish It’s complete job. Overall, I liked the shark AI ultra much better!!!!!! I named my vacuum lifesaver because that’s exactly what the AI shark ultra is!!

Works ok but…
The vacuum works fine, but… The only way to access it is through the app and the app does not work. It keeps logging you out and does not remember your login and sometimes does not work at all. I called customer service and got a scripted and incorrect answer saying that there was a problem and they are fixing it within 24 hours when when you go online, there’s been a problem for a long time and it’s the same problem. I then got disconnected after being put on hold for quite a long time… I guess I’m gonna have to return my product which is a shame because I actually like it but if I can’t access it what’s the point .

Amazing
I LOVE!! I am a cleaning freak and this robot keeps up with my Labs shredding. He goes out everyday as scheduled and recharges if needed. Easy mapping. I turned on every possible light in my house, let it map, and it did it perfectly the first time. This robot is smart and does a great job. I highly recommend!

Great Product!
I’ve had my shark robot for 7 weeks and I think it’s the best! The matrix clean option does an excellent job on floors and is especially good for the carpeted areas, nearly as good as doing it myself. Needless to say, I’m never going back to vacuuming or mopping. The robot frees up my time to keep my home cleaner and healthier now that I don’t spend so much time and energy on the grunt work doing floors. The SharkClean App was a bit of a challenge at first, but I’ve learned how to use it properly and have no issues with it anymore. I found that the answers to the glitches I experienced using the App are all out there on the internet, but took a bit of time finding what I needed. I really can’t say enough good things about this product – it’s certainly a lot cheaper than hiring cleaning help. I wish it had been available 10 years ago!

Great helper
This is my first cleaning robot and I love how easy it is to set it up and all the app mapping features. I love that it can get to places the cleaning company couldn’t, like under the bed. I wish it could travel up and down the stairs. But since it doesn’t I am ordering another unit with the mopping feature for another floor. My house looks so much cleaner. Thanks!

Love this AI RoboVac
We’ve used a couple of RoboVacs in the past. They’ve been ok-ish. However when out last one died we opted to try another one. This Shark model being the one. 1st off the charging station and debris emptying function is awesome. So much better then doing it from the Vac itself which you can still do. 2nd this thing is actually smart, well smarter then out previous ones from other manufacturers. This one scans the area and goes in a grid like pattern. When battery is low which is after about 3/4’s our main floor it then promptly goes back home on its own. Charges for a period of time (about an hour)that will give it enough to finish the floor then goes back home to fully charged for the next day. My only 2 complaints (1 is just a nit pick preference really) is that, A) it only comes or came in white and doesn’t/didn’t have a black option, B) There is an option for off limits areas, however I’ve never seen it work. If the function doesn’t work don’t put the option there. Idk if this is just pur machine or the product line in general of this model. Other than that we thoroughly love this thing.

Kinda Pet Friendly
I guess it doesn’t matter how much you spend and what promises are made, no manufacturer has perfected a robot vacuum cleaner that is truly pet hair capable. I have a lab mix and he sheds like crazy. I have this scheduled to run daily. It still gets clogged up and is unable to evacuate pet hair into the dock which definitely defeats the purpose of self emptying! Very frustrating! I use my Shark Navigator Pro weekly as well to cut down on the amount of pet hair.

Came used
The vacuum arrived already used with dirt in the filter. The stickers were removed and stuck to the instructions. Making the instructions impossible to read.

Broken
I was so excited. Then I got the vacuum and it wouldn’t charge. Called Shark and they said it would take 3-4 weeks for a battery replacement and suggested I call Amazon. I called Amazon and they wouldn’t replace it. Just offered a return with a refund. I don’t want a refund. I want a vacuum. The vacuum seems to be well built.
Katie –
Great daily tool
We have had this for a few weeks and so far it has been great! Love the features for the self emptying and being able to map the areas to ensure that the vacuum does not get stuck in certain places. We got it on sale which made it a no brainer for us but is it worth the money. We mainly got it for our dog’s shedding and we run it daily for picking up her hair which has been super helpful!
J. Snider –
Excellent vacuum
This robo vacuum is fantastic! It is very powerful, learns your home layout, returns to the base and even empties itself out! I would highly recommend this vacuum, it is a great time saver!

Was great for the first year and a half! Then it broke and shark couldn’t help me because the warranty was out and said I had to buy a new one! Would leave the dock and stop tech suppose said it was the roller took the roller out same thing happened and then said they couldn’t help me

WORST ROBOT
After a few cleans he would complain about a cliff preventing him from cleaning when there wasn’t even a cliff ! Waste of money , I’m going for another company don’t waste ur money on this one !
WonderWoman –
Awesome!!! Cleans my floors perfectly!
I love it. It does its rounds and picks up my dog hair. I just mop after it goes through. I will say it was missing the side brushes that it says it includes. I contacted help and they said I needed to send the whole thing back… Which I chose not to do because I was already using it. Overall, I love my robot.
SB –
Loved it so much I bought three more!
I bought my first one last summer when we had a dog guest in our house. With the two we already have, I was trying to keep up with the hair from three dogs. Plus we have white carpet in one room. It was a game changer! I could set it to run while I was doing other things. Realistically it can’t get corners but if you run it before the dog hair blows to the corners of your room, it keeps up very well. I was so impressed that I bought another one for our downstairs. Then when I was cleaning our floors at our cabin, I thought how nice it would be to have robot vacuums there getting the floors ready for me to mop while I clean bathrooms. It’s not unusual for us to have 4 dogs in the cabin at a time. Once we had 5. Since it’s our cabin and not our home, I decided to try two refurbished models. I haven’t had trouble with any of my 4 robot helpers, new or refurbished. I do take care of them and regularly check and clean filters. Our cabin has a third level so I’m watching prices because I want one more. I already have a name for her. These little gals have been able to get to the 10 years of dirt in the carpet underneath the beds in our cabin which I have been unable to get to because the beds are so heavy. I don’t know how well other robot vacuums work but I’ve always been sold on Shark for my uprights and they didn’t disappoint on the robot!
Lydia Lee –
totally satisfied!
his is my second robotic vacuum so I have a baseline comparison. This one has excellent suction. It mapped the area easily and does a thorough job of cleaning. It takes longer than my first robotic vacuum, but the wait is worth it.
Cindy S. –
Usually does a good job
We’ve had the Shark for about a month now, probably run it 10+ times, and when we tell it to clean it usually (probably 75% of the time) does a fine job. We are happy we got it and it does save us time. Pros 1. sweeps the house with little to no oversight. 2. Very quiet. Even when you are in the same room you can still easily have a conversation. I wouldn’t run it when I was trying to sleep, but much quieter than our manual vacuum. 3. Setup was easy. Found the wifie with no problems 4. No connectivity issues. This is great and a pleasant surprise based on other wifi appliances we have owned. 5. Mapping was adequate, if a little awkward. You only have to do it once so I count it a win! 6. Handles the carpets well. No problem getting onto and off of them. It struggles with the ledge into our kitchen which is probably a full inch but it always triumphs! Also no problem with going over electrical cords. 7. Nice low profile so it can get under pretty much all our furniture. This is a big win. 8. Dust bin is quite adequate for our house. Occasionally it will empty in the base in the middle of a clean but it takes right back up. We empty the base after each cleaning Cons 1. Battery life is adequate but barely. Our upstairs is a little less than 1200 ft and it can do it on one battery charge if nothing goes wrong, but if there is a hickup then you’re out of luck. 2. When it encounters an error it cannot restart from the point the error occurred. You have to restart from the beginning. 3. It sees our intake vent for our furnace as a cliff occasionally and will ask for assistance. This is the one error, however, which it recovers from gracefully and continues so it is really just a minor annoyance. 4. It seems to fail more often than I’d like. Either the rollers get clogged, or the dustbin on the unit gets clogged or something. One time it unplugged the base station during cleaning! As noted above if one of these errors occurs you have the fix the problem and start over, it won’t take up where it left off. 5. Mapping is awkward. I would like to make our furnace intake vent a no-go zone, but am not ready to try that with the mapping. It is cool to see it trundling around doing it’s job so earnestly. Table legs, kitchen ledges — it perseveres until it gets the job done!

Works Great
This vacuum collects the dirt and logically moves about the room well. It is very quiet. It does not bang into furniture, just slow and turns.
Lynn Milam –
Cleans great!
Really good mapping but it is a bit loud. Not enough for me to care. We have 2 dogs and I run it twice a day(set it to do it automatically) and it helps me so much.

Won’t be disappointed
I’ve had one of these (different brand)before and wasn’t impressed. Skeptical about buying another. Well this one is absolutely perfect, does a great job, quiet, easy to set up. Highly recommend! Even got several other people to purchase this one.

Not good with dog hair
It does not do well at picking up dog hair. That is the reason i have this, and prior, had a roomba. My dogs stay inside at night, 10×10 kitchen area, they shed of course. The roomba struggled in the summer when they shed very much however the bin was physically packed full and it just wouldnt pick up any more. Its winter now though and its not nearly as much hair, but the shark leaves alot of hair behind. So much that i ran the roomba after and you can see what it picked up. I really just wanted a self emptying station for the roomba but i saw this and had a great experience with my shark stratos, so i bought it. Id say after 5 days i regret it. Other complaints: This REQUIRES their app to setup and work which i dont care for. The app is very clunky and not enjoyable to use, have to open it twice to run as it closes itself the first time. Doesnt respond when you navigate then it catches up, very annoying. Also dont care for the different power levels in the app, there was way more hair on “normal” so its set to “max”, when it runs from the app. When it runs from the clean button on the robot it seems to run at “normal”, which means again, you have to use the app. Heres some pros: it runs forever, great battery. I really like the self empty station. It does not get stuck(at least hasnt yet) the roomba wedges under the cabinet between the carpet. Overall i wouldnt recommend it. Its pros does not outweigh that i paid $300 to replace my roomba and i still have to run the roomba.

Stopped working after 6 months
While the vacuum worked for the first 6 months, it worked well. My only complaint is that it doesn’t reach into corners as well as previous models I’ve had. After 6 months, every time the vacuum is scheduled to run, it stops and I receive an error message about the brush roll being stuck. The vacuum and canister are completely clean and empty and it continues to happen. Really unfortunate for the amount of money for it to only work for 6 months.

“Your brush roll is stuck”
This robo-vac is the worst! We constantly get the message, “Your brush roll is stuck”, even though when we check, it is moving freely. We have an iHome for our lower level and have absolutely no issues. We are getting rid of our Shark. Don’t wast your money!

Selling a used/refurbished vacuum as new
There may be nothing wrong with a a refurbished model but don’t try to pass it off and sell it as new. As soon as this arrived I knew something was off. Everything wrapped in clear garbage bags and no original packaging. Scuffs and scratches all over the top of the robot. What a shame.

does great on my hardwood and tile floors
it does better than i do with my upright vacuum. however, my one large area rug is only about 60% clean. i have two labs that shed all the time. i still clean the carpet every other day. that being said, im pleased with how it gets all the hard surfaces. it was pretty simple to set up the app and get it working.

Good vacuum, but has errors
I’ve had this product for about a year now, and it mostly works really well! It maps the room great, and is efficient, but lately it’s been producing errors. I keep getting error 2, stating that the side brush is stuck. I’ve cleaned all the brushes, but this error keeps popping up. It stops the product from running.

Best Addition For House With Pets
I love this vacuum. The mapping function works flawlessly, it avoids objects well and I love love the fact that it dumps itself. Mine runs daily and never have an issue. I love the way it patterns the floor. One thing I wish you could do is use the app on the phone to drive it.

What’s not to like?
I can always depend on Amazon reviews to point me in the right direction. I bought this unit to replace 2 older robot vacs from another brand that had served me well, but were just not cutting it anymore. Neither had the capability to empty their waste bin and keeping them running was getting to be a chore and an additional cost I was getting tired of funding. So, my first impressions of this Shark are pretty much in line with what most of the reviews said. I downloaded the app and after charging the battery and following the instructions had the vac map my house. I have a single story 2350 square foot home and the mapping took all of 15 minutes or so. I bypassed setting up separate rooms and turned the Shark loose to vacuum my entire house. The app advised me it would take 155 minutes and the actual time was 165 minutes. The vac returned to the dock twice to dump its load and once to recharge the battery. A pretty thorough inspection of the house told me I bought the right vacuum. I couldn’t find a single crumb or any dirt anywhere that the vac had missed which I could never claim with my 2 other units. Also, this unit is very quiet by comparison to what I’m used to. Contrary to what some people have said, the app worked flawlessly. I really cannot find anything to gripe about. It’s $299 very well spent.

Love it
I run it every day then it pick stuff up. I have a cat I used to have to vacuum every day now this thing when I’m sleeping, we can set a schedule for it. It runs on the song knows what it wants to do know where it goes and you could view what it does. It’s great.

Love, love, love
My mother got this for me for Christmas 2024 and I love it!! Every day I have it programmed to start cleaning at a specific time and I come home to see creases in my rugs from where my Shark had been!! We have (3) labs and (2) cats and you can imagine the dog ass /cat hair. With the Shark AI Ultra Voice Control Robot Vacuum note, I come home to a very clean house!!! Thank you!!

After a year
It worked perfectly for about 8 months. Now, either software glitches, vacuum won’t work unless frequently cleaned or AI believes it cleaned all rooms and stops after 5 minutes. I purchased a Dyson stick vacuum and i spend less time vacuuming floors than having vto service the shark.

Works
It gets off pattern and wanders sometimes

May as well do it yourself
AI Shark? Laughable. This thing makes the most bizarre routes and bumps into soo many things after it has ‘learned’ the home. Watching it ‘work’ is cringeworthy. Save you money

Works very well
This is a huge time saver for pet owners. It is great at picking up all the hair/dirt my big dogs bring into the house.

Stopped working, shark replaced it immediately
Don’t usually write reviews. I usually read reviews but on this one but my wife this vacuum cuz she really enjoyed my parents’s she wanted one. Got it. Did the setup it mapped the house, and then started cleaning and then one of the brush motors went out. Called customer service. I was on the phone for maybe 5 minutes and they are sending me a brand new One. Reason I gave it five stars is the customer service is the best I’ve experienced in some years. Easy to communicate with. Knew exactly what was up, said We’re going to send one right out to you. Great experience. I’ll be buying more shark ninja products in the future.
