What’s Good, Bad, and Ugly About the Robot Vacuum? An In-Depth Review
The Shark robot vacuum has garnered positive remarks from users who value its time-saving capabilities and its proficiency in cleaning both carpets and hard floors. As one user joyfully stated, “Saves us 112hrs a year! That’s roughly 20 min a day. The orange is worth the squeeze.” This sentiment is echoed by others who highlight the vacuum’s impressive mapping technology, which allows users to instruct the device to clean specific rooms via their phone. The convenience offered by the vacuum’s self-emptying feature is frequently praised, as it can handle pet hair effectively, with one user affirming, “This vacuum is awesome. We have two Spaniels and the wife has extremely curly red hair. This vacuum does its job and then some.”
In terms of reliability, there are reports of the Shark vacuum performing exceptionally for several months without any significant issues. Its scheduling functionality, when operating correctly, enables users to automate their cleaning routines, providing a seamless and hands-off experience. The machine’s performance is considered comparable to higher-priced alternatives, as one user acknowledges, “does the hard floors right and as good as the ones that cost twice as much.”
Despite its advantages, the Shark robot vacuum also faces considerable criticism. A recurring theme in the negative reviews is the vacuum’s longevity, with multiple users experiencing breakdowns within a year. One user expressed frustration, stating, “Only Lasted 8 Months,” while another added, “Broke in a Couple of Months.” Technical issues such as error messages regarding the IR disc and wheel malfunctions have been reported, leading to dissatisfaction with the device’s durability and quality assurance.
The accompanying app has been a source of discontent, with users citing a lack of basic functionality like matrix cleaning and random activation at odd hours despite scheduled times and “do not disturb” settings. Customer service responses have been found wanting, with suggestions like factory resets failing to resolve the issues permanently.
The product’s handling of pet hair has also been critiqued. One user found the model not suitable for pet hair, experiencing frequent clogging, and feeling that the money spent was wasted. Additionally, the machine’s inability to clean without supervision has led to increased user intervention, negating the purpose of an autonomous vacuum. The sentiment is summed up by a user’s comment, “Refuses to clean the room I send it to,” indicating problems with the vacuum’s smart features.
Connectivity and mapping issues plague some units, with the vacuum either cleaning the same area repeatedly or struggling to navigate around the home effectively. This has been compounded by the apparent lack of firmware updates or responsive technical support to address such glitches. As one user lamented, “It’s a brick because the app can’t connect,” highlighting the frustration felt when the device fails to meet expectations.
The stars speak of…
Opinions about this product were divided in such a proportion among the buyers.
This robot is working great for our family home so far. It has mapped the main floor perfectly. Each day it runs it gets better and better at getting every inch of the room area. We have used it for 1 week daily and each day I am surprised on how much pet hair and dust it picks up. I would recommend this product for this price range. Worth the money.
Disappointed. Got this to replace my iRobot Roomba. My Roomba picked up all the dog hair feom my carpet. This Shark just goes over the top of it and leaves the hair. This may be fire for houses with no carpet, but it sure isn’t as good as the iRobot. Looks like this will be going back.

Great Robot Vacuum, but could be better …
The removable dust box always keeps a certain amount of dirt.

LOVE IT!!!
The media could not be loaded. BEST purchase of 2023. This thing works so well. The laser technology really makes a difference, as it makes really small turns around poles or corners. I love the XL bin for it to self empty into. The mapping of your house is easy and no work on the user’s end. The app is easy to use and functions. I run it everyday and it has made a huge difference.

Cleans well and intrigues my pets!
I love this product! Easy to go and since the area is mapped away it goes!

Great first impression… not so great now
I purchased this at the beginning of July. At first it was amazing! Absolutely loved it and it did a great job cleaning. It is now December and I’ve wanted to take a hammer to if the last month. I now have to manually empty it because it throws a code or error each time it goes to empty itself like “dust bin not installed” or “can’t empty debris into dustbin”. I’ve blown all the filters out multiple times. I’ve recalibrate the machine and it still has the same problems!!! It also leaves about an inch of space around everything, walls, furniture, etc that it doesn’t get. Overall I am not satisfied with the machine.
Chase Winkler –
WILL NOT CONNECT TO WIFI
We bought this product with such high hopes but we’re so deeply frustrated after a zillion attempts to connect it to WIFI. We’ve followed every troubleshooting instruction with no luck. We’ve never had any issues connecting any of our other devices to WIFI. Maybe it’s a lemon?

Great product
This is one great machine. It polishes my wood floors, gets almost every corner. I don’t use the app either
mourad c –
Badly disappointed
To make it short, the vacuum robot arrived, put it to charge, when it was time to try it out, unfortunately it did have error #18, it did request to contact customer support, unbelievable!!!! Didn’t even had the chance to use it not once. I called amazon customer service to return the vacuum and get a replacement!!? They do not have the option, I have to return the item then wait for my refund so I can re-order another one. The process is ridiculous, you bump up the sellers numbers and make them look good but the truth they suck. I do not recommend the product

Wish I had bought this long ago
I’ve held out buying a robot vacuum because I was skeptical about how well it would work. My skepticism has been proven wrong. This thing is really amazing. For one, it does a really thorough job. It tries to get every square inch it can reach, then goes back for more. But the fact that I can program it to run every night and wake up to freshly vacuumed floors is truly joyful. Vacuuming is one of the most tedious house cleaning chores, but this removes all the effort. If this makes me sound lazy, so be it, but this thing makes clean floors literally effortless on my part. I love that. The initial “explore” to map my house was surprisingly quick and accurate. It can also clean areas that haven’t been added to its map. Just turn it on and it goes to work. Having said all that, don’t throw away your upright just yet. After the Shark did one pass in normal mode, I went behind it with the upright and got a pretty full canister still. But I’ve now programmed it to run nightly on “max” and it seems to get much more during a cleaning run. With two cats that shed a lot of fur, there’s no way I could possibly keep the floors as clean as the robot can. I wish I had tossed my skepticism sooner and bought one long ago.

Amazing Vacuum
This robot vacuum is amazing I bought in Oct of 22′ I loved it. Sadly my girlfriends cat poo’d on the floor and the vacuum ran it over. Can’t get the smell out and don’t have the proper tools to disassemble to clean properly. When it did work, it was outstanding no regrets 10/10
Pianomama –
Dust bin error
I keep getting the message your dust bin is not installed or not installed correctly. I’ve gotten this since the first time I got it. I take it off and put it back on and it seems to work for a vacuum or two and then I get the error again. Getting very frustrated and considering returning it. I think something is wrong with the sensors or something.

Best one yet!
We have large hairy dogs and we go through one of these robots a year, this one is the quietest one we’ve had and the self empty feature works well. We got it on Black Friday sale 50% off, which is the only way I will buy these things.
Klassikatt –
I Love this robot!
This is my first robot vac so I was worried I wouldn’t like it. That feeling disappeared almost instantly. I opted for the vacuum only model. It was on a great sale so I went for it! The wi fi hookup was easy. I let him map then did it again just to be sure it was right. Sent him off to sweep and he goes everywhere! Even under bed and chairs if they aren’t floor level. On a full clean he will go out til the battery is low then recharge and finish up all on his own. You can set cleaning timed or rooms in the app and he’ll sweep while you’re gone. It’s very nice to sit reading or do some other job while he works. No emptying the dirt every cleaning. I love it and a friend just bought one after watching mine. I’ve named him Lurch and we get along fine!
BlueGreen –
No Drama
This purchase is used for our first floor. We are ordering the same model for our second floor. We have no issues with the floor mapping, have had no issues with the noise because it is a vacuum, and we have had no issues with the simple app. It works. Likely not suitable for cluttered floors.

Worth Every Penny
The media could not be loaded. My husband and I had talked for a couple of years about getting a robot vacuum. While we do have central vacuum in our home, we also have a German shepherd who leaves his, um, “glitter” everywhere. When we found the Black Friday deal on the Shark AI Ultra, we took the leap. A month or so in, we remain amazed at what a difference this device has made in the cleanliness of our home. It is easy to set up and operate, and even with my long hair (past my shoulders), I have yet to find long blonde strands tangled in the brushes underneath. I love that it goes back to its base and deposits whatever it has vacuumed up into the container which can be emptied into the trash with the push of a button – no vacuum bags required. Our wishlist for this device is that it could do stairs and also that we could do dual maps for both the downstairs and upstairs on the same device. I strongly suspect we’ll add a 2nd vacuum buddy to our home for the upstairs in the coming months. Oh – and we named him Free Time…because that’s what he gives us. Totally completely recommend this vacuum.

Reliability
Stops consistently during mapping

Great vacuum
The media could not be loaded. Unlike our Roomba, who cost the same, this vacuum does not get stuck. It’s also more gentle when it taps you and it cleans like no other definitely recommend us.

Im in love
I wish i would have bought this years ago!! i have a shepherd she sheds like its her job,i was afraid that a robot wouldn’t be able to handle her hair but i decided after month of research to get a shark wasnt super cheap but wasn’t super expensive, i had my dough’s, this thing is a god send as long as you keep up with the vacuuming it does a great job if you go a week it will get a bit clogged easy to fix just pop off the plate and pull the roller out and clear the clog, be careful the brushes on the roller are removable. Lightning McClean ( robots name) gets stuck sometimes and you cant close it off in a room it or it will throw an error code because it cant get out, I love everything about this bot.

Returning
Arrived and charged unit. It wouldn’t connect to network. Went through troubleshoot about six times. Called Shark and they made do the same procedure again. No change. The said higher level would call me within 24 hours. It has been seven days and no call.
Mike Christensen –
Far better alternative to Roomba
I bought this during a Black Friday deal, so the price was great. I’ve had a couple Roombas over the years and have always either returned them or been greatly underwhelmed. I’ve been using the Shark for a few weeks now, and it has always actually done its job, cleaned the specified areas, and returned to the dock for charging. My Roomba would get stuck somewhere at least half the time, or sometimes just “run out of battery” and die in the middle of the room. The Shark seems reliable and cleans great. The app is also great and seems well-written, provides a great user experience, and is fast to load. The “Mapping” feature is also amazing! It took about 20 minutes to create an accurate map of my downstairs, and I was able to easily label the rooms. I was quite impressed with this feature. Note, it’s not gonna look like a map an architecture would come up with; think of it more like sonar you’d see on a submarine. However, it’s perfectly usable for defining rooms and off-limit zones. Now a few cons: The Shark would get 5 stars, except for a few minor problems. First, it does seem to clean sometimes when you don’t want it to, such as at 4am. It’s not quiet, especially when it sings or when it empties itself at the dock, so it’s woke me up a couple times. The app has the ability to “set a schedule” (which I haven’t done yet) but doesn’t have the ability to have “no schedule”. Luckily, this hasn’t happened a lot yet and I’ve just opened the app and told it to return to the dock. Second, Alexa integration isn’t supported with this model even though the product description says otherwise. I was hoping I could command the Shark to start cleaning using Alexa, but unfortunately I have to use the app which isn’t too hard. If Alexa integration is important to you, I’d suggest looking at other brands. If they fixed both these things, I would happily give the Shark a 5 star review.

This thing is quiet for cleaning while I sleep
I don’t know why I didn’t buy one sooner. It does take quite a bit of cleaning at first because it cleans places I have not. Human hair does wrap around the brush but it comes apart real easy to clean along with the filters on both the vacuum and the base. I just empty and blow out the filter’s as needed. So far it is working well with our 3 dogs and large house.

Robot vacuum
Not what I expected considering the cost Will not find its way home and then battery goes dead The charging station is easy to reach
Treasures 4 Dollars –
Does a great job
This is still a very new gadget in the house so my wife is really just learning to use it. So there is a definite learning curve and discovery going on, so far she loves it. It seems to be doing a surprisingly good job transitioning from wood to tile and carpet flooring with some pretty sharp height changes in between without any problems. She likes the idea of it periodically returning to its base to discharge its load of dust and dog hair etc.
blahblahblah –
Very Pleased! Works much better than expected.
I can’t compare this robot vacuum to any others because it’s my first. I will say that I didn’t expect it to work as well as it does. We have two rag doll cats that put out an amazing amount of fur. It’s either vacuum all the time or just put up with it between vacuuming. Not any more! Sure, it can’t get everywhere the fur likes to go hide, but surprisingly, it does get most of it. We have wood floors with area rugs. I was afraid it would choke on the thicker area rugs. They’re a pain to do even with a regular vacuum, but it handles them like a champ! It’s so refreshing to see the floors so tidy. I’m embarrassed at what we put up with before. Another nice thing is if I make a mess, such as in the kitchen, I no longer care. I just whip out the phone and order up a room cleaning. Now for the big advice. Spend as much time as needed getting the initial exploration, map, and room creation process as perfect as possible. Move everything you can out of the way so it doesn’t mistake something like a bathroom scale as part of the house geometry. After the first few tries, there were areas it just decided weren’t part of the house because it couldn’t get there when exploring. It simply wouldn’t clean there even if not obstructed! Once I went through the house thoroughly and got everything I could out of the way, it made an excellent map. When you put things back, the map will remain but those things will just be seen as temporary obstacles. Seriously. It’s worth the work. My biggest ask for improvement would be single-room learning. After going to all this trouble getting a good map, I really don’t want to re-learn the whole house if I, say, rearrange the furniture in one room. But for now that’s not an issue. I initially took off a star for these initial shortcomings but have put it back up to five stars. Overall it’s fine. I can’t say for sure, but I think it’s getting smarter. For sure, it hugs the walls really well now, where it wasn’t doing that before. The only downside is I can’t say this thing is saving me any real time yet because I end up following it around the house just to watch. lol!
April –
Had it since October 2021
Still working great. I haven’t always used it so sometimes I’ll put it away for a while because I live in a tiny apartment and it takes up quite a bit of space but I have it out more often than I don’t. They have cheap replacement parts available on Amazon. Even replacement batteries all the way haven’t needed one yet. I do have to clean out from under it but I have hair that is about 3 ft long and it is thick. I also have an Australian Shepherd who has a genetic hair thing that causes him to have like 8 in long “mane” hairs that are really brittle and they fall off a lot. And on top of that I have a must a and on top of that I have a must a and on top of that I have a husky. Believe it or not the husky is the least of this robot’s problems. My hair does get tangled in the brushes like all the time. I can always clean it out super quick though. This prevents me from having two vacuum manually my entire apartment every day. My apartment is 600 ft², but I don’t let it go into the bedroom cuz my bedroom is a mess and it would get stuck on socks and stuff all the time. So it probably cleans about 500 ft² twice before running at a battery everyday. Neither of my dogs mind it, although my husky will sometimes play with it. I don’t think it’s that loud but if you’re trying to have a conversation via phone it might be. It’s definitely not as loud as my dishwasher or my washing machine that’s for darn sure. And it’s got to be a 10th the volume of my upright shark vacuum.

Pleasantly surprised
I bought this because of the reviewer who said this didn’t leave clumps of hair on the floor like her Roomba did. I’ve been a Roomba owner for about 12 years and have had several models. They all left twisted clumps of pet hair on the hard floors. I would always have to go behind it with a dust mop. This Shark does not leave any clumps of hair! It is quieter than the Roomba, it doesn’t bump into things like the Roomba, and it does a better job of cleaning. I’m glad I got it. I’ve run it for 6 days in a row now and have no complaints. I haven’t had to clean any brushes or empty anything. We’ll see how it holds up.

Very Handy
Reduces the time needed to do deep cleaning. Keeps the dust down. For people with allergies, get this. You will see how much dust it collects.
Mookie –
Arrived filthy and used!
When this arrived it was USED and all the filters were gross and dirty!! (See photos) …. Like it had been wet then dried with dirt caked on. The unit appeared different from the box description too. The brushes etc. were already assembled too?? (customer is supposed to assemble the little spin brushes) … and there was no blue protective film on the unit. I watched a ‘you tube’ video to set up it up and I was very disappointed I was sent a disgusting used one.
Margaret K. Ladely –
Missing side brushes
The machine is fine but the attachable side-brushes apparently must be purchased separately as they were not included in my $$$ package.

Totally worth it for regular maintenance.
I listened to the guy with the vacuum named Bruce, and wiped not 1, but 2 first maps to get Beula a little smarter from the start. It worked! She knows where everything is, always wants to go under the couch first, why I don’t know, except it’s probably the straightest route to everywhere else. That being said, she’s getting a little bossy now. I have a rolling table (kind of like a tv dinner stand) that’s often to the side of the couch and she will run into it rather violently to make sure I get it out of the way. Oh, and she LITERALLY just tried to leave the house because I had the door open, even though outside isn’t on the map. Naughty Beula! It’s ok, I still love you. I only gave a 4 because she’s not great at deep cleaning on a regular apartment-type carpet, so I still have to go over some spots, but overall, she’s great for use on a daily basis to keep the cat fur in check. Best present I’ve bought myself in years.
Shawn dusek –
If you have multiple dogs, do not buy this product.
We have 3 dogs and I was hoping this was going to be a little extra help to keep the dog hair off of our floors. It worked great the first couple of times and now all we get is the notice that the brush roll is stuck. We clean it out once a week, blowing out the brush roller and the filters and it still gives us this notice. Super disappointed in the product quality. We own a shark stratus vacuum and love it, was hoping this was as good of quality.

Not what it seems
Does a good job mapping probably due to lidar but the brush rolls got stuck with dog hair on every run I tried. Returned it and went with the Roomba j9+. The Roomba doesn’t have lidar but has never got stuck with dog hair.

Defective, but Replacement Ordered and is fine so far
This robot didn’t work right from ‘right out of the box’. Couldn’t get it to communicate to the base correctly ever (if that is how it knows its job). Involved Shark Tech Support, got it to work for one path of exploring its new home. It never would get itself to the base to charge without my having to turning it off and back on and much more. All issues seemed to be in the electronics somehow–it cleaned well if you could get it to work at all. After 4 days, processed return/refund and ordered another one. Now waiting on the refund for the defective one, have rec’d the new one and all seems to be fine. Working exactly the way I would expect after having an older Shark (Costco purchase) that is more than 4 years old, puts up with our golden retriever hair and is doing just fine now in our lower basement level. I am hoping that “Alvin” continues being a good boy, otherwise, he can go back to Vietnam where I hope “Albert” is headed. What a pain to figure out these things! ha

Best $321 I’ve spent
I have two German Shepherd Dogs that shed all the time. This Shark Robot was the best answer to that problem. This is my 2nd Shark Robot. The first one was not “smart”, did a reasonable job, but frequently got stuck, was not systematic in its cleaning, didn’t have enough suction power (once/week I still had to do regular vacuuming), and I was forever cleaning the brush. The new one has no such problems. it is very smart about cleaning all surfaces, including along the edges of rooms, it empties itself nicely once it gets too full and resumes where it left off afterwards, the style of brush no longer gets clogged up. I no longer have to use the regular vacuum to clean all the areas missed.

Glad I purchased
Lifesaver with 10 cats in the house! Does a great job cleaning multiple surfaces. The only issue I’ve had is that it sometimes gives me a message saying that the bin is not installed, I just take it out and put it back in, then it’s fine.

Quiet and Thorough
This mighty machine has been very thorough and impactful in our fight against floor debris. We have two dogs and two young children who love to make a mess but this vacuum has been a great help. It currently sits in our dinning room and I am impressed that it never gets lost or stuck on its way back to charge.

FRUSTRATION !
Cannot get it to stay connected to home wi fi even though it is a strong signal. Have been trying to contact someone at Shark for a week now and person 1 tries to help me with the basic shut it off and reboot lesson which never works, and the I am told they will “escalate” my call. 5 days later still no resolution. Customer service is awful. Do not recommend this product.

Don’t know how we lived without one!
I have 4 dogs, three are huskies, so I’m sure you can imagine the job it is to keep the house from having fur rolling around constantly. It’s a serious time saver, and mental stress release to just tap a couple buttons and have the house clean when I get off work! I live in an old house, all hardwood floors, with rough doorways between rooms, but it handles them wonderfully. The one doorway that is about an inch tall we put a door mat over as a ramp and the robot gets over it well. Once in a while it’ll get clogged up with hair when I do max clean, but as long at i schedule regular cleaning 5-6 times a week it can manage all the fur. I do empty it about once a week, but so far it’s never actually been full. The robot misses small corners occasionally but it does the vast majority so I’m very happy with it.

Sharky
Love it! We have 3 dogs and a toddler and this thing makes it so easy to keep the house clean. I run it about 3 times a day and it’s done an amazing job. It maps the house well, the spot clean feature works great, and you can direct it to clean specific rooms… we had a roomba a few years ago and we considered getting a newer model. I’m glad we went with the shark! It’s exactly what I was hoping for.

Upstairs Robot
I bought this to cover the vacuuming in my upstairs. I’ve had it for about a month or so and it works pretty well. It has not fallen down the stairs and only got stuck once so far.

Super great
This thing will keep sweeping until it’s clean when it stops to recharge then it starts where it was when it left to recharge! Unbelievable!

Great little vacuum
Does a great job. I have a Pyrenees who sheds like crazy and this does a great job of picking up his hair on our hardwood and rugs. Our old robot vacuum would leave clumps of hair here and there. No more clumps. Because of all the hair it does not make it 60 days without emptying the base. We are closer to 10-14 days. It’s a lot of hair though.

Needs wifi
I love my shark Connery! (Yes thats what i named him) however to have the vacuum follow the layout and avoid the no go zones wifi must be enabled. Being in a rural spot i have to use my phone hotspot to connect which means not being able to set times for the vacuum to clean daily. This is however not a big deal as i can just connect & vacuum when home.

Cleans very well on all surfaces
Love the scheduling option and how easy it was to set up the robot on the app

They DON’T sell simple repair parts
Shark customer service just informed me they DON’T sell side brush motors. Told me to buy a new $300 vacuum. Motor started throwing error codes 1 week out of warranty because brush was turning slowly. Not jammed as I disassembled unit completely so just a slightly binding motor. Seems to me programmed obsolescence from the start so having to spend extra time sourcing a similar manufacturer’s motor to get operational.

App will not let me clean one room completely without cleaning the whole house
So far nothing to dislike as far as working ability

Love this thing!
Well worth the money. I have a black lab that seems like he sheds every 5 minutes lol. Anyhow, it picks up hair no problem and never clogs. It is not as loud as my Roomba. I have had no problems with the shark and it mapped out house perfect first time.

Yes, just yes!
I could write a long winded review detailing every aspect of how great this product is, but all I will say is this – I have two young Australian Shepherds, they not only shed a lot but they have free access to the back yard and bring in a lot of dirt. This is by far the best purchase I’ve made in quite a long time. This product will keep your floors decent and presentable in between deep cleanings; also, deep cleanings are made much less “deep” and tiresome. Don’t give it a second thought, just buy it!

Not sure what they mean by “voice control “
Unboxed and charged. Went through the set up and scheduled cleaning times. Stayed on schedule for a couple of weeks. Now it comes on at odd times (schedule is still the same). Will clean for over an hour ( 1200 sq ft) and go through the whole routine an hour later. The bin is a nice feature so I only have to empty it once a week. Keeps the wood floors dust free ( it should running for three hours daily).

Not a good product
Just do not work. Neither one is working. Tried online directions, flashing lights, not working at all.
