What’s Good, Bad, and Ugly About the Robot Vacuum? An In-Depth Review
The Shark robot vacuum has garnered positive remarks from users who value its time-saving capabilities and its proficiency in cleaning both carpets and hard floors. As one user joyfully stated, “Saves us 112hrs a year! That’s roughly 20 min a day. The orange is worth the squeeze.” This sentiment is echoed by others who highlight the vacuum’s impressive mapping technology, which allows users to instruct the device to clean specific rooms via their phone. The convenience offered by the vacuum’s self-emptying feature is frequently praised, as it can handle pet hair effectively, with one user affirming, “This vacuum is awesome. We have two Spaniels and the wife has extremely curly red hair. This vacuum does its job and then some.”
In terms of reliability, there are reports of the Shark vacuum performing exceptionally for several months without any significant issues. Its scheduling functionality, when operating correctly, enables users to automate their cleaning routines, providing a seamless and hands-off experience. The machine’s performance is considered comparable to higher-priced alternatives, as one user acknowledges, “does the hard floors right and as good as the ones that cost twice as much.”
Despite its advantages, the Shark robot vacuum also faces considerable criticism. A recurring theme in the negative reviews is the vacuum’s longevity, with multiple users experiencing breakdowns within a year. One user expressed frustration, stating, “Only Lasted 8 Months,” while another added, “Broke in a Couple of Months.” Technical issues such as error messages regarding the IR disc and wheel malfunctions have been reported, leading to dissatisfaction with the device’s durability and quality assurance.
The accompanying app has been a source of discontent, with users citing a lack of basic functionality like matrix cleaning and random activation at odd hours despite scheduled times and “do not disturb” settings. Customer service responses have been found wanting, with suggestions like factory resets failing to resolve the issues permanently.
The product’s handling of pet hair has also been critiqued. One user found the model not suitable for pet hair, experiencing frequent clogging, and feeling that the money spent was wasted. Additionally, the machine’s inability to clean without supervision has led to increased user intervention, negating the purpose of an autonomous vacuum. The sentiment is summed up by a user’s comment, “Refuses to clean the room I send it to,” indicating problems with the vacuum’s smart features.
Connectivity and mapping issues plague some units, with the vacuum either cleaning the same area repeatedly or struggling to navigate around the home effectively. This has been compounded by the apparent lack of firmware updates or responsive technical support to address such glitches. As one user lamented, “It’s a brick because the app can’t connect,” highlighting the frustration felt when the device fails to meet expectations.
The stars speak of…
Opinions about this product were divided in such a proportion among the buyers.
This robot is working great for our family home so far. It has mapped the main floor perfectly. Each day it runs it gets better and better at getting every inch of the room area. We have used it for 1 week daily and each day I am surprised on how much pet hair and dust it picks up. I would recommend this product for this price range. Worth the money.
Disappointed. Got this to replace my iRobot Roomba. My Roomba picked up all the dog hair feom my carpet. This Shark just goes over the top of it and leaves the hair. This may be fire for houses with no carpet, but it sure isn’t as good as the iRobot. Looks like this will be going back.

Broken on arrival (Shark fixed issue right away)
Garbage. It would make it about 1 ft before throwing an error code. No obstructions and not issues with the wheels/rollers. It is just junk. Edit: Shark Customer Service is excellent. They sent out a replacement right away.

In one word AWESOME. It definitely sucks.😁😂😂😂
Had it up and running in 15 minutes out of the box. I love it. My wife loves it. Our basset hound is not quite sure about it.😂😂😂. It’s like having a live-in maid. The vacuum power is great. It’s easy to empty. We are extremely happy with it. I would definitely buy again. Shark hit this one out of the park!!!

TRASH PRODUCT
Just keep getting error saying brush stuck since about 4 months after buying. I’ve replaced the brushes. It isn’t dirty doesn’t have a scratch. It’s in a immaculate home of an elderly man with zero carpet or obstructions. It only has a few crumbs here or there from time to time to clean. What a worthless waste of money.
250R girl –
Sent this right back!
The media could not be loaded. The product arrived and had dirt all over the entire unit and the mat it sits on. Highly disappointed!

Floofinator
I love this vacuum. It does very well getting the main rooms of my house. I was very surprised by the amount it picked up. I would make sure everything on your floor that could get tangled, picked up, or rolled into the vacuum is picked up and put away. It gives you a warning when it’s low on battery, or going back to doc. It’s quieter than I thought it would be. My cats are not afraid of it like they are the big vacuum. Overall, I am very happy about my purchase.

5 months in-Honest Review
I’ve been using this vacuum since November 2024 and here is my honest review. My house is about 1300sqft, 70% porcelain tile and 30% high pile carpet. I also have three dogs, one is a Great Pyrenees (very heavy shedder) and the other two are medium shedders, so lots of dog hair! Pros: so easy to set up, it did take two tries to “map” the house. Make sure doors are open and take items off the floor (dog toys, kid toys, shoes, etc). Super easy though. Love that you can set a schedule and/or just open the app and tell it to clean. You can even choose a specific room instead of the whole house. Cleans the tile wonderfully, no more dog hair tumble weeds! Cons: not great on high pile carpet. I ran my Dyson over the carpet, just in the main traffic areas and I filled the canister five times. This was right after the shark had vacuumed. Dog hair tends to get stuck in the side of the brush causing it to stop and need to be cleaned frequently. However, once I just used it for the tile only this happened less frequently. Overall, it saves tons of time cause I was staining the tile every other day. Not enough suction for my carpets, but still worth it in my opinion.

Broke after 6 months
I have owned this shark for 6 months and now it gives him a warning message, I have cleaned every part and replaced all parts and this shark is still not working. Not happy for the price I paid that this vacuum broke within 6 months. I will not be buying a shark again.

Works great… until it doesn’t
After a month (when the return window had closed) it kept telling me its “brush roll was stuck”. I have cleaned it till there wasn’t a speck of dust… still won’t work. In my experience, I spent more time trying to get this thing to work than it did actually vacuuming.
Leah Jordan –
Not worth the effort of a return
This could not properly map my house no matter where I placed it. It would roll out a few inches, turn several circles and go back to the base. And we won’t talk about the horrible app experience. I had to sign in over and over because the app kept crashing
Ron –
Needs improvement
Vacuum works great. The app SUCKS!!!
Jonathon Tack –
Replaced within 9 months
Brush roller gets clogged fast. Cows not clear error codes when error stops unit from running. Purchased June of 2024. Constant fight with the unit. Purchased new roller brush and system still has error problem.
Jessica –
Easy setup
Easy to setup! Love the app. The amount of dirt it picks up is unbelievable!! I was shocked
LB –
Waste of money
This vacuum barely works. It doesn’t dock itself properly so the battery is always dead. I need to replace the brush & haven’t been able to find the proper size so when the battery works, the brush gets jammed up & is constantly needing to be fixed. A waste of money!
J –
Spend your money somewhere else
This thing is junk for the money you spend. Bought June 2024. It’s Feb 2025. Worked fine until it didn’t. Now it doesn’t vac the whole area as programmed and doesn’t even vacuum the area designated when selecting for a single room. Tried remapping a few times. Factory resetting. Deleting and redownloading app. Nothing fixes it. There is one phone number for customer support. You will be on hold forever. Forget trying to find an email. There is no way I am going to spend hours trying to get this to work and getting a hold of customer service. It’s a $400+ machine. It shouldn’t be this clunky and there should be better customer service.
Greg –
Do not buy ! LIDAR quit working after 18 months
LIDAR detection system quit working after 18 months. Vacuum should last much longer than 18 months.
Souris –
Didn’t even last two years.
Worked ok for almost two years. It never handled corners or edges well. Recently started giving an error about the side brush being stuck. I checked and the brush is not stuck. I cleaned them and the roller but it still gives the error. I replaced the side brush and it didn’t help. It will not work at all now. Something that costs this much should last more than two years.
Oregon Unknown –
Best gift I could have given myself.
OMG. This is a complete game changer. We bought a new house 3months ago and I wanted to make sure that we started off right. This has been my favorite new home purchase by far. I have the schedule set to vacuum about 1hr before I get home and then again I will turn it back on at 8or9pm to do a quick pass where the dogs mainly congregate. Very nice expensive but worth it if you can afford it. You will still need an upright or second unit for cleaning against the walls monthly.
yvette –
Vacuum works well, but app is terrible and constantly needs to be logged back into to work
What is the point of having an automatic vacuum if it doesn’t run automatically most of the time?! The app controls any automatic schedule for the vacuum, but it constantly logs you out for no reason and then the vacuum doesn’t run on automatically per the schedule in your app. Based on Reddit comments, this has been an issue for the last 2 years and they still haven’t fixed it…
Wade N. Schneider –
Cleansing good
Does a good job but it doesn’t clean very good around edges. Sometimes it doesn’t go back on the base correctly which makes it not charge properly.
J Mason –
Very impressed
Very impressed. This girl does not get stuck on cords OR throw rugs. I bought the refurbished one – saved me couple hundred dollars – thank you Amazon. She knows where to go, gets the job done. App is easy to install and setup. Picks up all the dog hair (chocolate lab) – saves me from dragging out the big vacuum. My dog don’t mind her. Named her is Alice and is my new best friend.
Yohaira –
Do not work
Is an item that has been returned and do not do the job
Dominic Camacho –
It’s good at first 😔
Not what I expected. Way too expensive just to vacuum. It’s better to get the mopping one 😔
Jamie –
Disappointed
less than a month, and it’s already giving me errors. I’ve tried to fix it multiple times, but it’s stopped working completely. Such a waste of money.
Margaret –
This is a fantastic product!
Love this robot! It does a great job and I wish I had bought it years ago.
Sarah Dotzel –
Performance dropped dramatically after first month
At first, loved this vacuum. But after about a month, I felt like the suction/performance dropped dramatically. There is still significant amounts of visible dirt on the floor after running now. I have cleaned the brushes, emptied the bin, and changed the filter multiple times, and it has not improved. I’m bummed bc I splurged on this vacuum.
Amazon Customer –
most unhappy
I’m not a happy camper. Unit arrived on June 24th, 2025(Shark AI Ultra Voice Control). I’ve used it 4-5 times at most. Now I get Error 7, which means there is a problem with one of the sensors. I cleaned the bottom already, so that’s not the problem. Figure it out, at $299 and used 4-5 times, each use cost me $70-$75. Do not buy this item.
Craig Holcomb –
Great Vacuum
One of the best purchases I have made. Remotely cleans any area needed. Very easy to use . It navigates the areas well.
Jeh –
It goes over wires easily!
This machine cleans so well! The places and corners it goes is impressive. I used it after I swept and the amount of dirt it found was embarrassing. Hooked it up to Alexa and I always have clean floors when I come home. Works perfectly! Worth the money!
Renee Roberts –
Only last 12 months
One year ago we bought this. This month it no longer can vacuum where the map shows. It typically does 3/4 to 1/4 or less of the map then decides to stop and says its job is successfully complete. We’ve have cleaned its sensors. Rebooted it to factory defaults. Relearned the map etc….. it’s toast so I went to find the extended warranty and thought it was interesting we bought it exactly one year ago this month. Tells me it only lasts one year. My last robot vacuum worked for quite a few years. Don’t buy unless you plan on getting a new one every 12 months.
A. Quimby –
Excellent choice
Took several hours to charge but was super easy to set up. It took me a few minutes to figure out the map it created of my house – the rooms looked really choppy but I realize now that it was due to my furniture. It isn’t insanely loud; I can hear it from the next room but not throughout my entire home. Interestingly enough, my dog isn’t bothered by it at all. He was scared to death of my last one.
Nicolas Garnier –
Bad software
Very bad software, especially two issues that happen almost every time: 1. The robot doesn’t follow room instructions. Most of the time, it ends up cleaning the entire home instead of the specific room I’ve chosen 2. The robot stops working because battery is low instead of going back to base, and I have to manually pick it up and place it back on the bases despite choosing the option to stop & recharge. Pretty dumb for a robot.

After 6 months…
I got this vacuum on sale for mid $200s. I think at that price point, it is an okay vacuum. I did a lot of research and got this based on the reviews. I honestly didn’t think it would go so far south so quickly. I’ve only had this vacuum since August ‘24. I got it to help keep things tidy since I was 9 months pregnant & knew with 3 dogs + an infant, it was going to be hard to keep up with the hair. So I got this vacuum to do light cleaning in between deep cleaning. At first it was good. Not great, but decent. The design does not allow it to get close up to the wall or in corners. No problem because i got it to HELP with cleaning. I like the schedule feature and the room mapping. However, now that we’re in February ‘25, the vacuum no longer operates on schedule, it doesn’t connect via WiFi, and doesn’t do much of vacuuming. It kind of just spreads dirt everywhere.. if I bought this full price, I’d be LIVID. I’m glad I got it on sale, but I don’t think I’d recommend this to anyone. Especially bc my house is only 900 sqft & all hardwood floors. I love shark products but this one is just not it
Jackie –
Pets
Ordered this for someone else for Christmas. They have two dogs and a cat in their home. They are very pleased with the results of the Vaccuum. It mapped out their home and they can check the app to see where it went and when it’s completed. I believe there are other features too, but I do not know.
Tina –
Not performing correctly
Bought this in December 2024. It worked great for over a month and now it doesn’t cover the areas that it mapped and at times it leaves the dock and goes straight back to the dock. I have deleted the maps and let it re-map the area a few times. I have also done a factory reset which helped but it still isn’t working like it did in the beginning. I’m writing this review while trying to contact customer service. I’m not sure what to do because it won’t show the problem I am having in the ask questions section.
Tim –
Do not buy if you value your privacy
When we first got this robot, it worked fine. The robot still works fine. Does it OK job cleaning not great but OK. But now we have to log into our website before we could run the robot that we own . That is outrageous that they want you to login to run a robot that you bought and paid for. I will never ever buy another one. I think that’s an invasion of privacy that they know when you run and cleaning your house. A bunch of BS.
James –
Fantastic purchase
I owned a competing robot vacuum before. After swearing off robot vacuums, I decided to give it one more try. I haven’t run this vacuum cleaner very long, but it has exceeded all of my expectations. The design on the base, the way that it maps out and cleans rooms. The quietness of the machine. Everything is phenomenal. This is well worth the money, and I am considering getting a second 14 my other floor. The only thing that I would improve would be the app design. It is challenging for me to find some of the settings that I would like to customize.
Shellsnrn82 –
Not for homes with pets
I’m very disappointed in the performance of this vacuum. We previously had a Roborock vacuum and it worked wonderfully until it broke. I thought I’d give this vacuum a try. It’s battery doesn’t last for our 1200 sq ft first floor, it needs to return to the dock to charge. You can’t even tell it has run, leaving behind copious amounts of dog hair on our hard wood floors, as well as our area rugs. I do not recommend this to anyone who has pets.
Sh –
OK for the price, you would still need to vacuum weekly
Doesn’t replace regular vacuums but does a decent job. I run it every other day, and it cleans the surface, picking up litter, visible debris, and some pet hair. However, when I vacuum weekly with my Dyson, the tank still fills up with pet hair. The battery life isn’t great. It’s also too stubborn when it can’t climb something, which becomes annoying and noisy. The app was very buggy but has improved. However, it still lacks basic features like live progress tracking and showing the robot’s location on the map while it’s working. I’m not unhappy with it, but I’ll buy a better one in the future and move this to the basement.
K-LO from the Block –
POS!!!
This thing is expensive and piece of crap! I am a techie persona and i have programmed it several times. I does what it wants when it wants. I set up NO GO Zones and guess what It goes right to them. It gets stuck under beds which is strange bc how can it enter but not exit. OVERALL THIS HAS BEEN A HUGE WASTE OF MONEY! DONOT BUY

Very pleased
Very pleased with this robovacuum. Love the mapping, even though we need to remap since things have been moved around since Christmas. I have a bad habit of not checking the app to make sure all is ok but I noticed that the carpet didn’t seem cleaned for two days so I checked the app. It said the dust bin had an issue. I was able to locate the problem very quickly, clear it, and all good. (The issue was not caused by the robot). So far, so good!
Fahque Twice –
Not the best choice in vacuum
Broke within 6 months and the return process was a pain. Not a bad unit, but you can do better. They wasted hours of my time and I got a sub par vacuum. The saga is too long to type out here, but just avoid this vac.
C –
Very effective for a bad back and pets!!
Have a real bad back, this works so effectively well for all the pets fur. I have 3 dogs, and 4 cats they got this right when making it. Covers the carpet and hardwood with a breeze. I was shocked just at how much it pulls out of the carpet and flooring. Definitely would recommend for all pet owners, or with complicated maneuvering. Best purchase ever!!!
Janine –
Artificial Unintelligence
Splurged on this 90s-retro-aesthetic little guy, and his “Days since last accident” board rarely exceeds 2 or 3 days. This thing is constantly stymied by pet toys, rugs, and doors in general, or dies on low battery without returning to its little robot base.
Baileigh –
GET IT!!
I absolutely love this vacuum, I named him Brucie of course lol. If you’re thinking about getting a robot vacuum I highly recommend this one. It was fairly easy to set up. I used the advice from other comments here & when you map the house for first time make sure all the lights are on & there was no problem for me! I set it to go off every day at the same time so I don’t even have to think about it! Only “issue” so far is it’ll occasionally get stuck with hair in the roller but that’s very easy to clean out. I love not having to think about vacuuming daily as I have two cats, it easily picks up litter no problem. Also it’ll pick up pine/newspaper litter pellets easily as well. It’s not very loud, definitely quieter than a normal vacuum. Loudest part is when it cleans itself out when it docs but only lasts a few seconds. Over all VERY satisfied with this lil guy!!

Method of controlling where it goes
Unlike another robot cleaner I have, this one uses a magnetic tape that does not work well at keeping the robot out of places I didn’t want it to go. Otherwise a great product

Don’t buy this model!
Very disappointed that it broke after only 1.5 years of use. I am impeccable when it comes to maintenance, even changed the filters every week – yet it still quit working on me with incorrect error messages and it honestly completely ignored my ‘no-go’ settings after 1 year.
