What’s Good, Bad, and Ugly About the Robot Vacuum? An In-Depth Review
The Shark robot vacuum has garnered positive remarks from users who value its time-saving capabilities and its proficiency in cleaning both carpets and hard floors. As one user joyfully stated, “Saves us 112hrs a year! That’s roughly 20 min a day. The orange is worth the squeeze.” This sentiment is echoed by others who highlight the vacuum’s impressive mapping technology, which allows users to instruct the device to clean specific rooms via their phone. The convenience offered by the vacuum’s self-emptying feature is frequently praised, as it can handle pet hair effectively, with one user affirming, “This vacuum is awesome. We have two Spaniels and the wife has extremely curly red hair. This vacuum does its job and then some.”
In terms of reliability, there are reports of the Shark vacuum performing exceptionally for several months without any significant issues. Its scheduling functionality, when operating correctly, enables users to automate their cleaning routines, providing a seamless and hands-off experience. The machine’s performance is considered comparable to higher-priced alternatives, as one user acknowledges, “does the hard floors right and as good as the ones that cost twice as much.”
Despite its advantages, the Shark robot vacuum also faces considerable criticism. A recurring theme in the negative reviews is the vacuum’s longevity, with multiple users experiencing breakdowns within a year. One user expressed frustration, stating, “Only Lasted 8 Months,” while another added, “Broke in a Couple of Months.” Technical issues such as error messages regarding the IR disc and wheel malfunctions have been reported, leading to dissatisfaction with the device’s durability and quality assurance.
The accompanying app has been a source of discontent, with users citing a lack of basic functionality like matrix cleaning and random activation at odd hours despite scheduled times and “do not disturb” settings. Customer service responses have been found wanting, with suggestions like factory resets failing to resolve the issues permanently.
The product’s handling of pet hair has also been critiqued. One user found the model not suitable for pet hair, experiencing frequent clogging, and feeling that the money spent was wasted. Additionally, the machine’s inability to clean without supervision has led to increased user intervention, negating the purpose of an autonomous vacuum. The sentiment is summed up by a user’s comment, “Refuses to clean the room I send it to,” indicating problems with the vacuum’s smart features.
Connectivity and mapping issues plague some units, with the vacuum either cleaning the same area repeatedly or struggling to navigate around the home effectively. This has been compounded by the apparent lack of firmware updates or responsive technical support to address such glitches. As one user lamented, “It’s a brick because the app can’t connect,” highlighting the frustration felt when the device fails to meet expectations.
The stars speak of…
Opinions about this product were divided in such a proportion among the buyers.
This robot is working great for our family home so far. It has mapped the main floor perfectly. Each day it runs it gets better and better at getting every inch of the room area. We have used it for 1 week daily and each day I am surprised on how much pet hair and dust it picks up. I would recommend this product for this price range. Worth the money.
Disappointed. Got this to replace my iRobot Roomba. My Roomba picked up all the dog hair feom my carpet. This Shark just goes over the top of it and leaves the hair. This may be fire for houses with no carpet, but it sure isn’t as good as the iRobot. Looks like this will be going back.

Worked for a short time.
Worked great for about three weeks. Then it said to clean the brushes, I did that and it would not reconnect again. They sent a new pod, void the battery, brushes and dust hopper. Battery was nearly impossible to remove. Plus it is a black unit when the one I ordered is white.

Disappointing
I bought this product after having LVP put down throughout my home. I am really disappointed that I need to sweep up areas right after running this vacuum.

Doesn’t charge !
I got this about a month ago! But recently I come to it and it’s on 5% charge and no one is moving it. It stops charging on its own and it’s actually really loud louder than my last robot vacuum. I will probably need to return this because it is way too expensive for it to be broken this fast.
Jill T. –
Worked well for first 3 months..
The vacuum has great features, mapping, scheduling, wifi and app. However, after the initial 3 months, maybe less, the vacuum lost all it’s glory and power. Maintaining and cleaning parts was a must but to no avail, the vacuum just never regained it’s cleaning capabilities. Also, the vacuum is completely not able to be registered with shark, as the model is not found and scanning the qr code just returns error. For the price, you would expect more than a couple months of usage before the product becoming virtually useless in cleaning anything at all. No support from shark, basically a wasted few $100. Very disappointed.
Lilashley –
Lost the sweeper brushes
Worked ok for about a month with only minor issues then all of a sudden I noticed it lost both of its sweeper brushes. The error says it has a plugged roller sweeper and then I noticed it was missing both arms. No idea what happened to them.

Vacuum itself…okay. App and Shark Customer service…..terrible.
I’ve had a Shark Robot for a little over a year, the robots themselves are good when working properly. I was having an issue with the suction….(I had only had it a month), completely cleaning out weekly, blowing it out with pressurized air, everything to keep it working flawlessly. It kept missing light weight things on my (not plush, short tight pile, carpet). I contacted customer service (which the shark robots customer service is in Brazil), okay…I gave the agent access to my camera so that I could prove it was not picking up even the simplest thing like a dried up blade of grass. He said, absolutely, it needs replaced. It took him a while to put in the order. Okay. He came back, said, he didn’t have an exact delivery date, as there were none of those parts in stock. Just as soon as the item was back in stock it would ship. They charged me $10.95 for shipping. Okay. 9 months pass….still no replacement parts, I log-in to my shark account. The replacement order had been “canceled”. I contacted customer service again, explained the situation. The male agent hung up on me. I called back immediately and got a female agent, who said she was sorry and that she would order the part for me. Confirmed my address multiple times, then said she couldn’t order the part, the system wouldn’t let her. She said she would keep trying and then call me back when she was able to order it. Two hours later she DID call me back. Said it was ordered and that she would personally send me a confirmation email. She did…I also got an official replacement part confirmation. So…..customer service is hit or miss. Fingers crossed I actually get my replacement part. Just beware of customer service issues. Sadly, these poor agent folks in Brazil don’t get much support from corporate. I’d say it’s a corporate fault. Oh…and the app. Glitches galore. It doesn’t map particularly great, but even at that, after multiple updates on the app, the app still times out, resets and take forever to get things rolling. I like regular shark vacuums, that’s why I thought the shark robot vac would be amazing. It’s not.

Need to return
We have been online with customer service two different times and cannot get it to work and now it wants us to pay $50 per month. I want to return it but one day after can return. Can you help us?

Great if you have cats! Has one MAJOR flaw though.
This vacuum is great but does have a flaw. Ill start with the good. 1. Can schedule it to run before i get home from work. 2. Dock holds quite a bit of debris. 3. Climbs over ANY transition strip. 4. Fairly quiet, especially on carpet The Bad… 1. Does not follow “No Go Zone” map navigation. 2. Gets stuck under my bed every day because it tries to climb over picture frames (bed is drawn as No Go Zone) 3. Any rugs that move might cause it to get stuck (bathroom rugs) 4. Tries to climb over clothes piles that are on the ground. Figured the SMART features would prevent it from trying to climb an object taller than itself.

Great mapping and cleaning but not for pet owners with medium to long hair dogs.
This is the second Shark robot vacuum I have purchased. The first thing I will say is that the mapping has improved greatly from several years ago. While the vacuum works well enough for everyday cleaning, if you have pets that shed, I would stay away. I found myself having to manually empty the dust bin every run because the port was clogged with dog hair when the vacuum tried to empty. The vacuum was only cleaning a small space daily (maybe 500 sq ft) but still managed to clog every run.
Jennifer L Swets –
Do not buy this!
This thing is a piece of junk. After a month it stopped working and will. It only clean 5ft of the house.
Raven O –
Stopped working
This was a great addition to our home—until it randomly stopped working. One day, it left the dock, started cleaning, then suddenly shut down with all lights off. The power switch on the side did nothing, so we had to carry it back to the base. Once on the base, the lights came back on, but ever since, it keeps repeating the same issue—shutting down before covering even 10% of the home and becoming unresponsive. Unfortunately, customer support has not been helpful. If support is reading this, we would love a replacement

High hopes but feelin’ low
I purchased this during Black Friday but didn’t start using until Christmas; so it’s been about a month. I had no issues setting it up or mapping anything out. But… I am disappointed after month 1. It’s been more of a pain in my patoot than any real help or time-saver. 1. It seemed to be pretty great to start, the first day or two, then my power went out and I couldn’t get the vacuum to connect on the app. After 3 days of doing the same thing over and over (disconnecting the vacuum from power, re-set, restart phone, restart modem and internet) it finally and magically seemed to hop back on but wouldn’t work with the name I had for it so had to create a new vacuum? It didn’t make me re-map my house but the girl goes head on and gets stuck in lots of stupid places so I will try to re-explore for the map. 2. Vacuum seems to miss plenty of crumb piles, strings, dirt. 3. It’s loud as F and my cats and kid hate it 4. Almost every vacuum I get a roller brush error and after examining, taking it out to find nothing and resuming clean it’s fine. BUT it makes it so NONE of my scheduled cleans are ever completed 5. Charging sensors already weak; almost every time my robot docks I must manually set her on top of charge sensors 6. Error message saying dust bin is full even though it’s not I have faith this will get better; I have learned you basically need to pick up everything in order for a clean to be successful so if you have kids or pets there’s a decent amount of prep work without error. I am going to continue to troubleshoot this baby and will update as things progress.

Don’t buy
Worked great for about 4 months. Then all of a sudden it forgot how to do anything. Map got deleted. Won’t make a correct new one. Keeps sending itself back to dock. Customer support is worthless.

Happy with this Shark ultra
So far I love my new robot vacuum. The app works great and the vacuum is not very loud. I am surprised how much debris it picks up. Very happy with my purchase.

Love it
I absolutely love it!!!!! Best thing ever!

Poor quality and customer support
I’ve had this robot for 2 months straight out of the box it needed a new battery now I’m 2 months in and the side brush roll stops working customer service says it’s covered by warranty but I got to pay shipping and sales tax and they told me it’s out of stock and it’ll be four weeks so I don’t recommend this product
Nazareth –
Wife wasn’t on board with it at first but now she really loves it.
We’d get it again. works well. The software works well enough for laying out its course.
Rob –
Great vacuum, dirty marketing trick
I love this little vacuum. Not just because it makes vacuuming so much easier, but it’s almost fun to hear him working hard to clean the house while I laze on the couch. The app sometimes has trouble connecting, but it’s not so frequent that I would call it a serious issue. The one drawback is that you can only map one space. So if you have a sunken room, if you have a second floor, etc, your choices are to map the space each time you want to vacuum a new area, or you just set it down and push clean, but then obviously you need to be there to push the start button so no remote app. It is quite obvious that they have the ability to map multiple rooms and for you to just select map 1 or map 2, but I’m guessing they hope you but one of these for each floor.
Amazon Customer –
Do Not Recommend
Great in the beginning, but not even 2 years old and it has so many issues. I’ve meticulously cleaned and maintained it, but it gives an error every time it runs. I’ve reset it a few times and that used to work, but now it won’t even finish a run or completely map the house. I have to hit the clean button every couple minutes for it do anything so at this point a regular vacuum is better. Would not recommend, especially for the money.
Z –
Clean filters frequently!!!
This is our first Robo vacuum cleaner and we are quite happy with it. My wife is particularly happy with it, but I’m the guy that runs it and I have to clean the filters every two or three uses because if you don’t, it’s not gonna be very efficient. I don’t believe it is advertised as a HEPA quality filtration system, but it sure appears to be so.
Laura –
Baby shark do do do do do do
I really love this device. I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars because it doesn’t always negotiate obstacles well but it works really well and saves me a lot of time in cleaning!
Jack Kerouac –
This get stuck all the time
I have a relatively simple floor plan with some carpets and some furniture. I have tried this product in 2 different houses with simple floor plans, and this robot gets stuck every time. So recommend you don’t purchase this product. The newer Shark with Never Stuck technology is 1000 times better.

High quality
Alfred has been a loving and caring member of this family the moment we brought him home. He has brought our family closer together. His hard work and dedication has brought everyone peace of mind. We respect his boundaries and let him roam the house free and he works off words of encouragement. Be kind to this gentle species of shark they are most frightened when they go for a midnight snack. Gently feed your kids dinner mistakes to it. Or make your wife throw her disgusting shower pubes and hairs in front of them. They don’t mind
jjklein –
Good vacuum, loud noises though
The media could not be loaded. Love that this maps rooms and it seems to clean really well. Once it goes to the dock, it makes a weird noise after it docks and not sure if it’s normal or not. Anyone else run into this? I’ll keep it if that’s the way it’s supposed to sound, just not sure it is normal. The sound is most noticeable at the end of the video. Any help is appreciated.
Average Joe –
Use to be good, not so much anymore
When it works, it does a pretty good job. It’s constantly saying it’s “stuck” when sitting on it’s base. It’s gotten worse with time is now nore of an annoyance than helpful. I’ve contacted customer service numerous times and have been given advice to remove the runner, but it doesn’t help. Technology has its limits.
Linda A. –
Good on hard floors
Not good on carpet. I have a German Shepherd and low pile rugs. It does not clean the rugs. I use my Dyson stick vac and fill it with hair left from the Robot Vac. It does a good job on hard floors
Kim –
On the fence with how well it works
I’ve had this guy for over a month and I’m still on the fence. It worked great the first few times but lately it’s lost its way and can’t seem to figure out which rooms are which. Appears I’m going to have to re-map my house. This was rated one of the better vacuums for pet hair and it works fine on hard floors but not as good on carpet. I’ve also had to disassemble the brush the last few times as it keeps getting hung up with pet hair even though I run it 3-4 times a week. I’ll keep using it for maintenance since I usually have to hand vacuum several times a week due to pet hair and dander, but this way I’ll only have to hand vacuum once a week for a deeper clean.
James D. Holt Jr. –
Super Machine
I’ve had it a few weeks and it seems to be working great!!!
Gail –
Floors have never been this clean!
Love it. Was easy to set up. It does a good job cleaning the floor. It has only gotten hung up by trying to vacuum up a cat toy that was small enough to sneak underneath. Easy to remove and restart. It even goes over an higher transition that I thought it would old be able to accommodate. A+
Dea Beeler –
Saves Time
I run this every other day as I have 2 cats and a dog. So far I’ve been really happy with it. I will admit it’s pretty loud and takes about 80 minutes to do 619 sq ft. It’s great for upkeep and does a decent job. It moves throughout the house with ease and as long as you have everything picked up it covers the area well. Not great for deep cleaning and more meant for upkeep.
Ramiro Chavez –
Underwhelming performance
This was purchase was meant to be an upgrade on a cheaper off-brand model we had been using previously. While it has a suite of extra features that should make it more intelligent, it has no real spacial awareness. When it completes a cleaning cycle it wanders aimlessly searching blindly for the charging dock. There is no homing feature so the stupid robot has to accidentally line up in front of the base before it completes docking. Highly disappointed with the performance for the high price point.
Emily Cannon –
Great at first but becomes very nitpicky
This product was amazing at first but we’ve hit the year mark and every little thing seems to set it off and make it stop working. It takes a scavenge hunt to figure out what’s wrong and even after it seems you’ve fixed the problem it requires more. Better off just vacuuming every once in a while honestly
Rachel Waldrop –
Useless
It doesn’t clean. The brush keep getting stuck
Kindle Customer –
Doesn’t last
Product works well until it doesn’t. Bought this about 6 months ago and stopped working yesterday. Shark says they will replace it but I’m responsible for shipping their defective product back. That shipping cost is almost $30. I’ll probably go back to buying roomba products since I never had this issue with a roomba. Nice try shark but for what this costs it should last longer than 6 months!

How can someone sell a product that is broken???
I purchased this shark robot for my daughter as a gift moving into a new home. We hooked it up and it never worked. The disposable bucket unit would light up, but the vacuum itself would not work. Thinking it might be a bad battery. I actually ordered a new battery, but even with that it didn’t work I was so disappointed that I disappointed my daughter with this gift. I’m going to be calling Amazon to get a full refund. This should not be allowed.
S. Pierson –
Not what I was expecting
I ran it and thought it was going to pick up like the room a. However it didn’t do anything like that. It didn’t pick up much at all. So, I returned it.
Desert Witch –
Broke after one year
This unit broke after one year. The brush roll is stuck, even though it is cleaned regularly (and super clean now). I despair that it will go to the landfill, but planned obsolescence will prevail. In an attempt to fix it, I found out online it is a common problem.

Shark vacuum
Very good project and works very well on my hard floors. It’s a it a little louder than I thought it would be. Watching some of the videos if they claim it is quiet I would have to question the definition of quiet. You can watch your tv while it’s cruising around doing its thing. But like anything else you just get used to it. The real drawback for me wasn’t the robot but the app. I had trouble with it so I just gave up on it. Talking to other people that have these they don’t use the app and just hit the clean button and let it go. So if you don’t want it going to a certain area or room just close the door. For pet food and water bowls mine pushes them out of the way so it’s advisable to put them up. It transitions floor levels well and from hardwood to carpet easily. Overall I’m pretty happy with it.

Finn the Shark Bot: Mighty, Determined, and a Little… Confused
Meet Finn, our new Shark robot vacuum and the undisputed MVP of our chaotic household. He’s a small but mighty workhorse, navigating the treacherous terrain of our old, rough-floored, cluttered home with the determination of a salmon swimming upstream. Our living room and dining room are relatively smooth sailing for Finn. But life isn’t all hardwood and sunshine. Between the high chair, bouncer (a piece of furniture so massive it could moonlight as a studio apartment), toys galore, and strategically placed space heaters, Finn has his work cut out for him. Oh, and then there’s “The Mountain”—a one-inch tile lip separating the dining room and kitchen, complete with broken and missing tiles. At first, I doubted Finn’s ability to conquer this Everest. But Finn has grit. Sure, he tries every single impossible route first, bumping and spinning like a determined little pinball, but eventually, he finds his secret passage—the one magical spot where he can make the climb. Watching him triumph feels like witnessing a tiny robot Rocky Balboa moment every time. And let’s talk about Finn’s hunger. We have 3 dogs (two of which are huskies—read: fur factories) and 2 cats who seem to think shedding is an Olympic sport. Yet Finn never says, “Enough!” He devours it all, even dust and debris we didn’t know existed. Finn isn’t perfect—his smarts sometimes take a backseat to his enthusiasm—but he’s relentless, and that’s what counts in our house. Life with Finn is cleaner, funnier, and just a little more inspiring. We give Finn 5 stars! Shark makes amazing products, and Finn is just another reason to love this brand. He even self-empties, which is advertised as holding 60 days’ worth of debris. In our house, though, it’s closer to a week—but hey, that just proves Finn is doing his job! We run Finn about three times a day, and our floors have never been this clean. We used to battle fur and debris nonstop, with even our $700 LG vacuum failing to keep up. Plus, who has time to vacuum for an hour every day? Not us. But Finn does! Seriously, Finn is one of the best purchases I’ve ever made. I even got him a 3-year warranty for extra peace of mind, though with how solid and well-built he is, I doubt we’ll need it. The mapping software is impressively accurate—so much so that I’m still surprised by how well it works. If you’re on the fence, do yourself a massive favor and just buy one. I promise, you won’t regret it!

Didn’t even last a year with light use
I have four robot vacuums across two houses. My other three are Roborock and I purchased this one for the first floor of one house with a very open floor plan. As I only use the house on some weekends, I had the vacuum scheduled to run twice a week. The area is large plank hard wood with two area rugs. After 9 months the shark started having problems saying I need to clean under the shark logo. It would move about four feet from the dock and stop with that message. The app would then be worthless and unable to send the shark back to the dock. Two weeks later I’d come back to a shark with a dead battery close to it’s dock. After cleaning the area under the shark and checking everything else for any blockages, it continues to act the same. I should have trusted my gut and not gone with a low end vacuum. I was attracted to not having to change bags or deal with filling containers for a mop. Lesson learned.

Weak
I bought one before this and it was supposed to be the same model. Unfortunately, I had it in storage for 5 months before I decided to use it, so I can’t return it. This one was weaker than my previous model and only has 1 Shark fin. WTH?

GREAT BUY
I purchased this vacuum a month ago and it has been well worth the price I paid. It has saved this 89 year old back a lot of pain. It does a fantastic job . I would say it is probably the best purchase I have made from Amazon.

Doesn’t work!
The media could not be loaded.

Quiet enough that it doesn’t bother my dogs
This thing is a bit of a mixed bag but it has one perfectly executed feature: it’s quiet enough that it doesn’t freak my easily excited dogs out, both in terms of vacuum noise and noise of it (not) bumping into walls and furniture. The build quality isn’t amazing. It’s fine, if somewhat flimsy feeling. It’ll probably last a few years but I wouldn’t expect it to withstand much abuse. It sometimes makes a wad out of some dog fur (two heavy shedders with medium length, fine fur) and gets it jammed in the beater brush. This stops the machine until a human clears the jam and is frustrating. The app. It’s hot garbage. Slow, clunky user interface. It takes 10-15 seconds to refresh to display current status and battery level. I use it only to schedule cleaning and otherwise leave it alone. Vacuum power. It’s good enough to pick up aforementioned dog fur. There’s not much else to pick up, so this is good enough. Battery lasts about 90 minutes for me, which is enough to clean the area I want (~750 square ft). Charging takes forever, though (2-3 hours). The dust collection base seems to work well but has several filters that are pretty small and collect very fine dust quickly. If they get clogged the machine won’t run until it’s all cleared out. Navigation. It makes nice straight patterns on the carpet. It will cleanse one room at a time before moving to the next (if you let it map the house out via the app and then assign rooms to each area at least). It can be sent to a specific room or rooms via the app. The “matrix” clean / multi-pass clean only is available one room at a time though. Would I buy another one? Maybe. If it ends up buying durable, then probably. If the app gets faster and more useful, that would be good, too.

Cleans well, but battery is very small
The vacuum does a good job of cleaning with an app that is easy to use, but it comes with a very small capacity battery. Just to clean my downstairs it has to return to recharge (which takes over 3 hours), then almost completely runs out of charge a second time trying to finish. My older Proscenic robot vacuum would clean the entire downstairs on one charge with 30% remaining, very disappointed with the Shark for such a silly oversite.
