How Does the Wireless android auto car adapter Measure Up? Assessing Its Gains and Losses
Effortless and Reliable Connection: Many users, including Bill Ledbetter and TB, praise the Motorola MA1 Wireless Android Auto Car Adapter for its “Easy to install and use” capability, offering a seamless and wireless connection to the car’s display. Bill found the small size advantageous as it allowed him to “hide it in the storage compartment in the dash”, while TB was relieved to “no longer have to manually unlock my phone to use Android Auto”, finding it connected “flawlessly” every time after an initial setup.
High Compatibility and Convenience: Users like Khaled Elajam and Dave experienced consistent connectivity, with Khaled stating it “connects every single time with no drops or lag”, and Dave confirming that it “works perfectly” with multiple vehicles. This suggests the device’s compatibility with a range of car models and its reliability for maintaining a stable connection, significantly improving the driving experience by offering a cable-free solution.
Enhanced User Experience: Customers such as Danny and S. Roe found the device to significantly enhance their in-car tech interaction. Danny noted it was “well worth it for how well it works. Bulletproof!”, and S. Roe expressed delight at the convenience, stating, “It was so easy getting in the car later and voila…connected.” These experiences underline the adapter’s value in delivering a hassle-free user experience.
Connection and Durability Issues: Some users report connection stability problems and a limited lifespan. Jorge Andres Arenas describes his adapter as having turned into “just a brick” after 8 months of use, while Booger Goo experienced it “stops working after a year”. These reviews raise concerns about the device’s reliability over time and its susceptibility to connectivity issues.
Inconvenience and Compatibility Challenges: Despite the positive aspects, there are reports of the adapter not functioning as expected for all users. JR finds it “useless for drives under 15 min” due to the slow startup time, while K9dopecop points out a significant limitation, stating the device “requires VPN to be disabled”, which might be a deal-breaker for privacy-conscious users or those who rely on VPNs for work.

Understanding More: Questions Answered and Explained
What is the Motorola MA1, and how does it work? The Motorola MA1 is a wireless car adapter that allows you to connect your smartphone to your car’s display without the need for cables. It’s a direct plug-in USB adapter that uses Wi-Fi to communicate with your phone, enabling you to access Android Auto wirelessly. Once plugged into your car’s USB port, the adapter pairs with your phone, and Android Auto starts automatically when you start your car, giving you access to navigation, music, and more.
Is the adapter compatible with all cars and smartphones? The adapter is designed to work with any car that has Android Auto support and a USB port. However, it is important to note that the car must have Android Auto capabilities. As for smartphones, it works with most Android phones that support Android Auto. It is recommended to check the compatibility with your specific car model and smartphone before purchasing.
How do I set up the adapter in my car?Setting up the adapter is straightforward. You plug it into your car’s USB port designated for Android Auto, pair it with your smartphone via Wi-Fi, and follow any on-screen instructions. The device typically pairs automatically once the initial setup is done, so you don’t need to reconnect manually every time.
Does the Motorola MA1 adapter require a power source? The adapter is powered through the USB port in your car. There’s no need for an external power source or battery. As long as your car is running or the accessory mode is on, the adapter will be powered and functional.
Can I still use my car’s USB port for charging while using the adapter? While the adapter occupies the USB port it’s plugged into, it typically does not prevent you from charging your phone. Many cars have multiple USB ports, so you can use another port for charging. If there is only one port, some users opt for a USB splitter or hub to retain charging capabilities alongside the adapter’s functionality.
What happens if I receive a call while using the adapter? When you receive a call, Android Auto will handle it just like it would with a wired connection. The call interface will appear on your car’s screen, and you can answer using the car’s controls. Your music or navigation will pause or lower in volume, and resume once the call is finished.
Is there any latency or delay when using the adapter for navigation or music? The adapter is designed to offer a seamless and responsive experience. There should be minimal latency or delay when using apps for navigation or music streaming. However, the performance can be influenced by factors like the smartphone’s processing power, the car’s head unit capabilities, and the quality of the Wi-Fi connection between the adapter and the phone.

Stopped working, Motorola won’t respond
Purchased July 1023, stopped working April 2024. I can’t connect with support for replacement. I will not purchase the same device that is supposedly covered by warranty. Big disappointment, on to the next device I guess.

Works well most of the time

Great for 8 months and just becomes a brick
Bought in Oct 23, 2023, just a brick in May 2024. Used in Mazda3 for 8 months. Generally worked great. Quirky with reconnects at times but minor inconvenience. I’m guessing some how bricked itself or just wore out. I went back to using a usb cable for my last drive up trip. I spent few days trying to reset with the proper i It just showed white light, sometimenstructions.s blinks green.. Factory reset would only show RED light. Never saw blue light for bluetooth, didn’t blink correctly for reset sequence. I’m a IT professional and gadget guy for over 25 years, I’ve reset many devices. routers, cell phones, game consoles, computers. This has annoying instructions to reset a device. Just put a recessed button that resets after 10-30 seconds. Just going to buy AAWireless for $75… I hear AAWireless 2 coming out later this year.
ArkY –
Worked only 12 months.
Dead after 12 months. For 1 hundred dollars it is not good enough to get 1 star. Hopefully replacement will be better.
Bill Ledbetter –
Easy to install and use
Easy to install. Small size let me hide it in the storage compartment in the dash. Haven’t hooked up 2nd phone to it yet., but that option is available.
Michael Pistone –
Went bad in first few months of use
Initially it worked great, but after the first couple of months it just starting cutting out for a few minutes at a time and now when it cuts out I have to unplug it, wait a minute and then start it again. Finally bought a different manufacture’s model and it works better.

Has issues and Motorola won’t help
Constantly disconnects while driving. I’ve reach out twice to Motorola and haven’t ever gotten a reply back after several weeks. There’s no way to update the unit to fix anything either. Should have bought the aawireless.

Dies after a year
As others have said, it dies a little after a year. Bought mid January 23, now it May 24 it just reboots over and over again. When it was working, it worked great except for 1 intersection I used to go to that it would drop until I passed through the intersection while my work truck that has a different aa adapter wouldn’t have a problem.
JR –
Super Slow Startup
Works great when it finally connects, unfortunately i live in a small town and am at my destination 95% of the time before it finally connects…….useless for drives under 15 min.
Janelle Solorio –
Worked Great, not so much now.
Worked great when I first received it. A few months later it started to feel hot to the touch with normal use and now connects intermittently but never long enough to use…. Disappointed to say the least..
Alan Dong –
Worked for 1 year
Worked great when it did. Eventually stopped connecting after 1 year. Decided not to buy again.
Khaled Elajam –
It connects every single time and no drops.
My AA connects every single time with no drops or lag. Boot up takes several seconds but that’s a non issue for me. It usually connects by the time I start driving. You just have to get used to this issue.
Frank the Tank –
Stopped working. Regularly failed, requiring hard resets, manual reconnects. Then died completely.
While it worked, it worked well, but after needing to hard reset the device several times every couple of months to get it to connect properly, or it failing to connect, or losing bluetooth, or whatever other random issue would occur after each Android Auto update, it finally “died”. I’m pretty sure this device is no longer compatible with the current version of Android Auto, but if it helps anyone else, try connecting it, when that fails, restart your car with the USB plugged into your phone, turn on and approve android auto connection on your phone, connect, disconnect, restart the car and let the wireless connection do its thing. It won’t connect via wireless only anymore. That said, I can’t recommend this after all the problems.
Sean B. –
Worked great until it didn’t
Worked great for about 5 months and now it keeps disconnecting. Won’t buy another.
Luis M Vargas –

Works perfectly
I use this to connect with two vehicles: 2020 Chevy Bolt EV 2024 Kia EV6

no more cables!
My car has wireless Apple Carplay but only wired Android Auto. Not sure why they do that, but of course, I’m and Android guy. Android auto is far superior to the built in Nav system that my car came with even though I have a very nice display. Android Auto fixed that and works great, but until now, I had to plug in my phone to a USB-C cable which is not convenient, and worse, the cable would come loose and my Nav would stop working. This Motorola wireless adapter is outstanding, plugged it in, paired to my phone, and it just works. It’s really great that I can get into my car, turn on the ignition, and my Android Auto just comes up on the screen while my phone is still in my pocket. One other advantage is that this obviously runs on very low power and even though I stash it in a small enclosed space, it doesn’t get warm or worse yet, Hot, like my phone did when it was plugged in and enclosed. Don’t waste your money on a cheap knock-off, this unit is the real deal, well worth it for how well it works. Bulletproof!

Works great
Works great in my 2021 toyota tundra. No more having to plug the phone in every time, much better for the short trips
Christopher Ferrante –
Last 8 months
Worked great for 8 months. Now I can’t do anything. The light blinks, but other than that, it’s a brick.
S. Roe –
Like magic.
I have long hated having to pull out my phone and plug it in the car. Today, I plugged it in and synced my Bluetooth connection. It was so easy getting in the car later and voila..connected.

Bricked after a couple of years
I bought this item about two years ago. It worked okay most of the time, but recently started disconnecting regularly. Then it wouldn’t connect at all. Following reset instructions didn’t help. It’s bricked. Am giving competing device by AA Wireless a try now and really like it so far.

Excellent android auto adapter
Works great on my CRV EX 2024. Easy to setup. Connection to phone is within 10 seconds. Music sound is excellent. Just a great convenience option.

I was skeptical buying this but it works perfectly. Plug it in and you are done

Excellent
Works perfect in my Ford Maverick. Couldn’t be easier to install and pair with my phone.
Steve Maraway –
It works well but dies around 1-year birthday
The product works very well, but it died right after 1-year birthday. It keeps rebooting and does not go through factory reset successfully.
Daniel K. –
Love it!
I no longer have to plug my phone in for Android auto.

Wired AA Glitch workaround
I bought this because the android 14 update completely ruined AA on my s23 ultra. After 30 seconds of working, the connection would suddenly disconnect itself. No amount of new cables, resets, etc would fix it. I waited 6 months on an update from Samsung or Google with no avail and finally decided I couldn’t take it anymore. This adapter worked immediately. I was so scared I’d never have AA again or that I’d have to wait for the android 15 update to fix the glitch, but this fixed it with no need for troubleshooting. It’s so nice to have AA back. No more propping my phone in the cup holder while I have a perfectly functional AA display waiting to be used. Sometimes though, the bottom widgets glitch out. For example, the clock or album cover on the track seek widget will freeze and display album art from 5 songs ago and the wrong time. But to be fair, that might be an AA bug and have nothing to do with this product.

Adapter works perfectly, easy setup
The adapter works perfectly. Setup and connection was seamless and simple. My only complaint, and why only 4 stars, is that the double sided pad did not work and I’m unable to mount it.
Bart Kolodziejczyk –
Worked flawlessly for a year
Recently it just disconnects every minute. Did a factory reset updated phone and reset all setting, just keep endlessly connecting playing for a min. and disconnecting again.
James Pledge –
Stopped working after 3 months, no response from Motorola
When it worked it was fantastic. Unfortunately after 3 months it now reboots (connects for a few seconds and then stops). Multiple users online note the same issue. No response from Motorola at all after trying to get a hold of them through their support site for the last 2 weeks. Can’t recommend.

Good for 1 year
Worked fine for a year exactly. Then blue green light and totally dead.

Not working
I am from Egypt I sent it to a frenid in Texas. When I opened it a couple of days ago it is not working after many trials and even in a different car with android auto and still not working. The refund period finished. What can i do ?

Dejo de funcionar después de 1 año
Todo funcionaba bien hasta que un día hice un roadtrip de 5 horas y dejo de funcionar, se desconectaba y conectaba constantemente. Ya no funciona. Funciono bien por un año.
Johan Pouwels –
Perfect dongle !!!
You plug it in, click on the code in Bluetooth, click on Android Auto on your phone DONE!! I have a 2022 Volvo XC40

Didnt last long
Worked great for about a month and then it started disconnecting all the time…

Worked until it didn’t 😒
I was so excited for this device but all of a sudden it just started glitching and stopped working. I tried to reset according to the instructions in the booklet but that did not work. So unfortunate because it had great potential. It only lasted 3 months.
J Logan –
Worked firist time but nothing thereafter
I wound up returning the item. Even tried a reset but it had the same results.

Works fine, breaks after 6-8 months
Easy to set up, works great for about 6 months then dies. Motorola sent me a replacement for the first one in September. It’s now may and the replacement failed. Will be going with a unit from AA wireless this time.

No longevity
Barely a year old and it’s already stopped working.
christopher silva –
After a year it died
After a year of normal use, the adapter has died. Ive tried resetting, unplugging, forgetting network and Bluetooth and it has not fixed it. Ive tried looking for a way to contact manufacturer and havent had any luck thru Amazon. Its pretty difficult. It worked great up until the 13 month mark. Ridiculous. If motorolla was able to adress this issue, id change my rating but for now, unhappy. 1 star.

Stopped working after 2 months
Worked well for two months then it stopped working while I was driving. Music and navigation cut off abruptly. Tried everything to get it to work again. Lights up green but it doesn’t work. A lot of money for something that doesn’t work for long…
Amazon Customer –
Short life
It worked okay for just over a year. But like so many others have reported online, it made it just past the warranty. Now it’s a bricked piece of crap
Amazon Customer –
Great Buy. Works really well.
Works perfectly. Only issue is sometimes there is collision between the house wifi and the wifi from the dongle but no major issues
KB –
Dead at 15 months, right on schedule.
See the many other reviews. Reliably fails shortly after the first year, if you’re lucky to make it that far. Worked great until then with only occasional disconnects and some overheating issues, and is now stuck in a 1-2 minute connect/disconnect loop. Factory reset instructions found online are disingenuous advice and predictably ineffective. AA works fine via cable. No obvious problems upon teardown but wireless module has heat discoloration. Seems to be a defective design that slowly cooks itself over time. Disposable. I’m not excited that this turned out to be a short-lived rental. Stay away.

Unintuitive setup. Flawless execution.
It was a little fiddly to set up initially, taking several reboots of the device for my phone to see it to pair to bluetooth, but once everything was set up, it just worked. No issues. I haven’t had any connection issues either. Latency is the same as wired. I’m using it with a 2020 Kia Niro EV with the 10 inch screen.
Rachel Solomon –
It last 1 year and died.
I wouldn’t recommend it. It didn’t last long at all. It always had connection issues. There’s better products out there.
John G.93 –
Disconnects frequently.
The adapter constantly disconnects from the phone and you need to wait patiently until it reconnects again. Not sure if this is a problem specific to my adapter or a design issue. Unfortunately my window for returning it already expired.
Bryan Stanley –
Works great
It works great when I am the one using the car all the time. If my wife uses the car, it connects to her first, but then when we turn off her bluetooth it connects as it should

Works great with Android and 2021 Acura TLX
