Under the Microscope: Evaluating the Product’s Pluses and Minuses
What do the stars speak of?
Opinions about this product were divided in such a proportion among the buyers.
I’ve had this just for a day, but I know this robot is going to surpass my S9+. I have a J6+ in my office and it’s NEVER gotten stuck in 6 months of ownership. Its dodged cords, dog toys and blankets that have fallen on the floor. This robot has been doing the same, the suction is like my S9, however the side brush doesn’t get crushed like the S9 did on carpet. Mapping my house used to take 3 hours on the S9, with this robot it did it in half that. The method for mapping has changed and it speeds it up. The map is accurate, LIDAR wasn’t needed. It picks up all my dog hair and sand from when I visit the beach. I bought it for $599 early black friday deal Nov 2023.
I got this to replace my Roomba I have had for years It still works great but it is very loud and has no obstacle detection at all I just got a puppy so that is important to me After doing some research I decided to go for the top of the line J Right off the bat it had problems It leaves the base and stops for over a minute then starts again for a while then wants the bin emptied Its brand new and has never run nothing is in the bin Once I got it to run for a while after several time of restarting it from the base it started to map my house I went into a few rooms fine most it did about half then left never to return Nothing I could figure out would make it map or even try to enter the unmapped part of my house I googled this problem and found lots of people complaining about the same thing with the J The only answer was keep running it and hope it smartens up or wait for a update at some point I’m not paying what I paid for this

Question Bank: Providing the Answers You Seek
How does the self-emptying feature work, and how often do I need to change the bag? The self-emptying feature is designed to allow the vacuum to automatically transfer the collected debris into the Clean Base® Automatic Dirt Disposal unit after each cleaning session. This process ensures you don’t have to manually empty the robot vacuum’s bin after each use. The bag inside the Clean Base® can hold up to 60 days’ worth of dirt and debris, depending on usage and household conditions. When full, the bag can be easily removed, disposed of, and replaced with a new one. Can this robot vacuum navigate and clean multiple floors in a home? Yes, this robot vacuum is capable of Smart Mapping, which allows it to learn, map, and adapt to your home’s floor plan. However, it cannot physically move itself up or down stairs. If you have multiple floors, you’ll need to manually place the robot on each floor you want it to clean. It will then create a separate smart map for each floor, allowing for customized cleaning jobs. Is the vacuum compatible with voice assistants, and how can I integrate it into my smart home? Yes, the vacuum is compatible with voice assistants such as Amazon Alexa. You can integrate it into your smart home by connecting it to your Wi-Fi network and linking it to your voice assistant device through the corresponding app. Once linked, you can start, stop, or schedule cleaning sessions with simple voice commands. What is the P.O.O.P. guarantee, and how does it work? The P.O.O.P. (Pet Owner Official Promise) guarantee is a commitment from iRobot that this robot vacuum will avoid pet waste while cleaning. If the robot does encounter a pet-related accident and fails to avoid it, iRobot will replace the vacuum. This guarantee requires registration and is subject to certain terms and conditions that can be found on the iRobot website. How does the vacuum deal with different types of flooring, like hardwood and carpet? The vacuum is equipped with a feature that automatically adjusts its suction power when transitioning from one floor type to another. It delivers a stronger suction on carpets to lift trapped pet hair and debris, while on hardwood or tile floors, it adjusts to prevent scattering of debris and to ensure efficient pickup. Can I set boundaries or no-go zones for the vacuum? Yes, through Smart Mapping technology, you can set up virtual boundaries or no-go zones within the companion app. These zones tell the robot vacuum where it should not go, which is particularly useful for keeping it away from pet bowls, clutter, or areas with delicate items. How long does the battery last, and what happens if the vacuum runs out of power during a cleaning session? The vacuum has a battery life of up to 180 minutes on a single charge, which should be sufficient for most homes. If the battery runs low during a cleaning session, the vacuum will automatically return to its charging base to recharge. Once recharged, it can resume cleaning where it left off, ensuring the entire space is cleaned without manual intervention.

Wi-Fi was easy
Reviews said only some models connected to 5ghz. This one did super easy! Took about an hour to map the 3 bedroom 2 bath house. It’s really easy to use! I love it.
Catlover –
Stops every few minutes!
It doesn’t clean. Every few minutes it stops and says, “clear the brushes then press clean.” There’s nothing on or around the brushes! I had better luck with the cheap robot of a different brand. Waste of my time and money. I can’t vacuum myself because of my back- might as well hire a housekeeper.

Returned due to Device to App Communication Issues
For 10 days I was happy although the app to roomba connection was fussy at times. One day I found the battery dead because it wasn’t on base and was not able to tell if it was charging, and struggled afterwards to get app and roomba communicating. I tried over 2 days – resetting WiFi on device, rebooting from app and machine, on and on. I work in tech and can figure things out, but I was not given a way to fix. I’m not going to support this thing over months and years ahead. It’s shown me it’s not an acceptable product to sell to consumers. Return is now in progress.

Roomba app
While, I have no serious complaints about the robot vacuum, I find the app to control and operate it not user friendly. It is difficult to use.

Defective irobot
I order a received my iRobot last Friday (7/19). After over 2 hrs trying to get to turn on and working with IRobot customer service web site, decided a brand new product was defective and got authorization . I packaged it back in the box it came and shipped it back. Was shocked to be informed I was charged $97.35 restocking fee. ( they claim the box was open and is designated not new to sell . Why would you sell a defective product that doesn’t work?? ) Do yourselves a favor never buy products like this from Amazon. They charge restocking fee even on items that are broken/defective.

Worked for 3 months before they wanted *ME* to fix their garbage robot
So few things – it’s slow, like really slow. It’s inefficient; takes roughly 7-8 hours to complete vacuuming our home, which is around 4200SQFT. It literally takes it all day. It ends up running out of batteries, then goes back to the base to only obtain about 30% charge, then it goes to vacuum for another 20-30 minutes, then rinse and repeat. Watching it move around the house, it’s incredibly inefficient. You’d think it would operate in a standard grid up-and-back formation, but it’s just all over random. So all of that we were ready to deal with, until the suction stopped working, as did the brush. We did the troubleshooting with iRobot, and got it halfway working again, but with no suction. The last straw was when they wanted me to replace the “cleaning kit,” which won’t fix a suction problem. Rather than just sending us a new one, they insist that we send it in for repair. so in 3 months, I’ve spent 3 to 4 weeks diagnosing and fixing, and a month or so of it performing at half capacity. So. . . . you know, a $900 vacuum that works for roughly 30 days as it should.

Powerful and doesn’t get confused .
Powerfully enough to suck up the edge of a swiffer mop pad and climb on top of the bottom trying to suck it all up !

Definitely vacuums, questionably navigates
I got this device after moving in to a new places. It was *incredibly* helpful to do a couple mapping runs, set up a schedule, and have it pretty much reliably clean the place while I was at work or otherwise out while the apartment was still in flux with things being moved, boxes being emptied, etc. I initially felt this was a great purchase, despite the significant cost. But as I got more and more set up with arranging this here, and that there.. it began to get far less reliable. First off, the IR sensors on either side scrape along the wall and pick up a lot of paint and scuffing from the walls. I’m not sure if that’s the main issue and they’re less able to reliable sense where they’re at, or if it’s a software issue.. But at some point within the first month or two (it’s now been a total of four months and I haven’t used it in at least two), it began to ignore whole areas, and eventually barely be able to navigate between the dock and a targeted room for cleaning. And I maintained the hell out of this thing. I liked keeping it clean and operating well, and would regularly inspect and wipe it down. Initially, after making more significant arrangement changes or getting new pieces of furniture, I’d notice it not working well, or failing to update the map any after a run, and wiped my entire floorplan map multiple times. It seemed to then map run well enough, but it just kept going back to this ‘I don’t know what the hell I’m doing’ mode, and I just got tired of it. I even got the extra warranty, which stinks now that I’m thinking about it. Maybe I’ll throw it down some stairs to get a new unit (likely just a refurbished one..) and resell that. Anyway. I was initially thrilled by the prospect of only having to spot clean and the majority being automated (and initially quite competent). But that illusory help with day to day life evaporated into a very expensive hunk of plastic that seems to only want to waltz in the middle of a room without actually doing much productive.

Ferrari and Porsche not always the best aka iRobot
Was perfectly fine with my off brand $130 robot vacuum. Wife and I wanted an upgrade with self emptying bin and read many reviews on iRobot Roomba. Although cleaning is exceptional, lots of bells and whistles, but the technical side is terrible. Have had for a few months and WiFi disconnects often. Have troubleshooted plenty to make sure on 2.4, still has issues, not the internet it router, all other connected devices never had an issue. Then there’s the app. Attempt to change a setting or schedule, and get “error, please try later”. Tried later and tried resetting app, signing out, no fix. Not too impressed with a $600 machine compared to my more simplistic knock off

Constant problems. I purchased two of these. Docking issues. Starting issues. Makes no sense. Not happy with this purchase at all.

Not worth it
I had bought the shark robot vacuum, and my husband freaked out because he thinks that I Robot is infinitely better and researched and got this one. In the month that we have had it it has not worked except one time, every time since then it gets caught up in litter, which is the main reason that we purchased it. It loses connectivity to our wi-fi, it won’t dock properly, it won’t empty it’s been properly. I had much better luck with the shark. I will say however that the app is pretty cool, giving you the lifespan of all of the parts the vacuum, however there’s not a easy way to tell the vacuum to go home unless you start a cleaning cycle. I got home one day and it was just in the middle of my bathroom, not dead, it just stopped. It was not the ideal thing.

Love!
Vacuums in perfectly straight lines. Easy to use. Maps the house well and doesn’t get stuck as often as my last roomba. Would recommend.

Very loud
Hasn’t covered my entire main floor yet-tends toonky do part and run out of battery then does same area again. Very loud

4200 Sq ft and no issues
This unit covers 3 floors on 4 maps (in this house). 4200 Sq ft total with no issues. Will go a little more than 1300 Sq ft on a single charge with a good mapping, about 900 Sq ft with no map. Definitely less dust bunnies under beds and dressers!

So much more cleaning power than older model.

Making lots of noise and not working properly
This is by far the worst iRobot I have ever encountered. To make matters worse, their customer service is absolutely abysmal. I’m specifically referring to issues with the wheels, yet they insist that the problem lies with the rollers. I have provided them with pictures showing the device without rollers and have tested it myself, confirming that the noise originates from one of the wheels. Despite this, the customer service representative seems utterly clueless, almost as if they’re intoxicated. @IROBOT, PLEASE IMPROVE YOUR TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE OR NO ONE WILL BUY THIS GARBAGE. FIX THIS IMMEDIATELY!

New Replaacement
This replaced my last until which died and Customer service Irobot was was not much help (FYI) so this was on sale and I thought I would try it. This one is much better and cleaner than my J7 and can go over and around things much better! But I still have issues with the app! But the unit does a great cleaning job especially with both my dog hair and cat hair!

A must have
We had the i3 and it worked pretty good the mapping was okay and it did a good job keeping our floor clean. My dog was always messing with it and could get it stuck. The new i9 hasn’t been stuck on the ball yet. It always has a couple of photos of the dogs ball in different parts of the house. The mapping is great the no go zones and clean zones are easy to setup. And it does a great job at cleaning the floor. I can change the power levels for different rooms and you can set it to do a couple of passes in a room if you want. It will ask if you want to add a clean zone in spots it finds more dirt. I have add a couple of them around the house. This thing is worth every penny.

Roomba j9+ vs Roomba i5+
We purchased the Roomba j9+ and i5+ around the same time and have used both for a few weeks now. The main things the j9+ has which the i5+ does not is identifying and avoiding objects including cords or clothes. This is helpful if you have a tendency to leave things on the floor. If this is not a concern then I’d highly recommend the i5+ model as it seems to clean just as good with fewer errors. Additionally the i5+ is typically $350 cheaper. I would never buy the expensive j9+ model again and would recommend the i5+. Overall I’m happy with both products, but believe the j9+ is very overpriced for the added features.

It works great
I got it for my Mom for mother’s day and she loves it.

Beware – This is a Refurbished Product
The item description did not clarify this was a refurbished product and it was. It looks new and operates like a new one – so I am happy in the end – however, it required a fill factory reset to erase pervious user information. Refurbished is fine – it just needs to be disclosed. Another listing with refurbished status disclosed was quite a bit cheaper and i would have picked that one if I had known.
Alexis –
Does a good job, but doesn’t detect obstacles well
We have had our vacuum for a couple months now and while it does a great job cleaning the floors, I don’t think the camera/sensor does a very good job at detecting obstacles. It has vacuumed up cat toys multiple times and it runs into objects that have always been in the same spot, like the cupboards and the couches. It runs into these items very hard, at full speed, which has resulted in A LOT of scratches on the front of the robot. If you’re home and can babysit it, it’s a great way to clean your floors but for the price, I think the quality could be much better.

Broke after 5 uses
I would never buy from this company again. The iRobot worked a few times before the base unit went out. Customer service said they would replace the base unit if I send the invoice, because the seller was not an authorized dealer therefore iRobot would not cover anything. Luckily Amazon came through and returned my money. Don’t buy this!!
Stephmonique –
Do not buy
After 2 month it stopped working! And I’ve been having problems since day 1

Too Much Maintenance Required
This runs great when it will run! However, I get errors saying it can’t empty the bin all the time. Usually I have to take it apart and clean everything I can find to get it working again, even though the bin is not full or jammed. I have an iRobot that cost about $130 and it runs constantly where this one is down constantly. I don’t recommend this model.

Received an used vacuum
I received an extremely used vacuum instead of the brand new I ordered. Scratched, bin full of hair, wheel dirty. Manufacture’s box missing . Vacuum was packed in nylon inside a shipping box.

Dirt-Raising Disappointment: Product Turns into a Floor-Spreading Menace After 4 Months
**1/5 Stars – A Major Disappointment: Product Turns into a Dirt-Spreading Disaster** I’ve had the pleasure of owning this product for 7 months now, and I must say, the initial experience was quite satisfactory. However, things took a drastic turn for the worse around the 4-month mark. It’s been a nightmare ever since. The product, which is supposed to help keep my floors clean, has started rolling the dirt into piles and leaving it all over the floor. Yes, you read that right – it’s not just failing to clean the floor, it’s actively making a mess! I’ve tried to troubleshoot the issue by cleaning the rollers and replacing the filters, but nothing seems to be working. Despite my best efforts to maintain the product, it continues to malfunction and spread dirt around instead of picking it up. I’m at my wit’s end and extremely disappointed in the performance of this product. The fact that I’ve had to deal with this issue for four months now is unacceptable. If you’re considering purchasing this product, I would strongly advise against it. It’s long-term headaches and frustration you’ll encounter will far outweigh any perceived benefits. In conclusion, I’m left with a product that’s more of a hindrance than a help. It’s a shame, because I was initially impressed with its performance. Unfortunately, it’s now a waste of space and money.

Never again!!!
After just over a year. The ,”white circle of death” started and would not stop (its the white light slowly going towards the left i dicating a reboot or such). I tried contacting customer service via email and they were slow to respond everything. After 2 weeks of little response I called. The reps are very nice but useless. The first one said they would elevate my claim to the next level. After not hearing from anyone for another week, I called back. Though I had sent the requested information, no one had actually elevated the claim. I was told by 2 different reps that the more advanced team would help me or replace the roomba. Finally at almost 4 weeks I got an email stating after reviewing the information it was either stuck in an update or had been exposed to water. I tried the final suggestion to no avail. And no this roomba was never near water. I was told because the roomba was out of warranty (purchased Oct 22) now June 24 that they would not replace but they would give me $100 in the trade in program towards a new robot. After buying 3 Roombas I’m done. I will never buy another product from this company. Each roomba is lasting less and less time and costing more and more money.
Michael Givens –
Amazing product, Terrible support
Called support to troubleshoot notifications not being received. I was told there is a separate support group for the app vs the robot. A week later I receved a generic email with vague instructions that did not address my issue at all. Three weeks and four emails later and after requesting a call from a supervisor which I never received, I gave up. I will not buy another iRobot. Even though iRobot tech is better, Shark support is far superior.
John –
App is difficult to use and vacuum performs poorly.
The app forces a strong password. It’s a vacuum. They may think someone may hack into my robot and run it when I am not home. The password should not expire if I do not want it to. Robot performance is questionable. It gets caught on carpet edges and gets itself stuck in unusual places. It fails to find its way back to the charger. The charger is extremely large. Our previous irobot could charge under the bed so it was hidden. The new one is large, can’t be hidden, and difficult to move or store. We are very unstafisfied with this irobot. Connectivity is unsatisfactory. It needs to be reconnected to the internet every few months, which does not work. Customer support takes about 30 mintues to walk you through re-connecting the irobot to the WiFi. It is faster to use a regular vacuum.

More trouble than it’s worth
Requires constant maintenance, hair gets tangled in brushes and breaks the rollers/ ball bearings melt the plastic, “avoids dog poop” is a hilarious marketing ploy/failure – have had my first floor painted with poop 2x now.
B. Slack –
Same unit broke 4 times – Roomba customer service is bad.
I have a roomba on every floor – Main floor unit has died twice – upstairs unit died 4 times. They charged me to fix – and the repair is only warrantied for 6 months – I am not buying any more Roombas – now that they have competition – I’m leaving the brand – It’s just junk engineering – units won’t charge – won’t turn on – changed batteries – cleaned contacts – did every troubleshooting step – but they never work right. I’m 100% over it – I will probably move over to Melie – that’s a company I trust. Roomba is dead IMO.

One of the best products I have ever purchased
This is one of the best products I have ever purchased. This is the second Roomba that I have owned, and this Roomba is light years better than the last one. Bob, as we have named our little robot assistant, does an amazing job of cleaning, and the beauty of it is that Bob is quite intelligent. After a few cleanings trying to get to know the floorplan of the area that he vacuums, he now is programmed on certain days to go ahead and do the cleaning and empty himself with no intervention. It’s amazing. If you want a robot vacuum cleaner, I would highly recommend this product.
Kiersten Patton –
Not that smart
A year later it has all kinds of problems. It has hard time charging, hard time emptying the bin, hard time finding path, hard time finding home. That camera is a lie, it only takes pictures of obstacles that robot encounters but it’s not used to navigate. At this point it’s so annoying that I mostly use my hand vacuum. It’s so stressful to operate this roomba that I want to sell it. I do not recommend this robot! I would recommend either buy a cheaper option or pay little extra and get new dуsоn robovac

We have 3 Roomba’s i6, i7, and this j9. The j9 is the worst by far. It’s constantly getting lost and stuck. Have to delete and remap to fix the issues. Then it will work for about a month and breaks again. This thing is garbage! We have almost no issues with the cheaper models.

Good for light clean up
Had this vacuum just over a year now. It does a good job at light, daily clean up. We normally run it twice a week and it does a good job. Pros: – Cleans everywhere I tell it to clean. – We have two adults, two dogs, and two cats. It picks up everything we leave behind. – I don’t have to vacuum, meaning more time for other tasks. Cons: – Battery life isn’t great. We have a 1700 sq ft home with carpet in the bedrooms and tile everywhere else. Starting with a full charge, it usually needs to recharge two times to finish the whole home. – GPS mapping is a little wonky, especially in our home. If all your rooms are square north south and east west, it would probably do better. We have a lot of 45* angles, and it gets lost sometimes. It stumbling around looking for a doorway probably doesn’t help the battery. – Understandably, it doesn’t have the suction of our upright. So if you want a deeper clean, you’ll need to do it yourself from time to time. This isn’t meant to be a negative review. It works well, but is not perfect. I walk around barefoot most of the time, and it keeps it from feeling like I am walking on sand all the time.

Works well, but does not dock itself correctly
Constantly needs manual adjustment after running, as it docks but fails to make good contact with the charging pads and loses battery. Not sure what it is, as the pads are clean, and manually docking seems to work fine.

Defective Out of the Box x2
On May 13, 2024, I ordered a Roomba J9+ here on Amazon with great anticipation. The order was received in a timely manner. In preparation for the new vacuum system, I thoroughly vacuumed and shampooed the rug which is about 10 years old and has a normal pile. After the Roomba mapped my house, I started a cleaning mission of the living room. After 2.5 minutes of operation the unit stopped and announced an Error 2 – Clean the Green Rollers message. I turned the unit over and could not see any obstruction in or around the green rollers. I reassembled the rollers and reactivated the J9+ back into the cleaning mission. Only 1.5 minutes later, Error 2 again announced itself! There was no obstruction. Error 2 occurred again after 3.9 minutes of cleaning, then 2.0 minutes, then 1.7 minutes, then 4.6 minutes, then1.5 minutes, then 3.7 minutes, then 1.9 minutes, then 1.5 minutes, then 2.2 minutes, then 3.9 minutes, then 2.0 minutes, then 6.3 minutes, then 2.3 minutes of cleaning. At that point I gave up and ended the cleaning mission. The J9+ operated for a total of 66 minutes during this cleaning evolution and experienced 15 Error 2 events! At that point, I went back online to Amazon and requested a return on May 22, 2024, which was approved. [NOTE: I am a licensed Aircraft Mechanic and a Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician. I know and understand technology and troubleshooting.] Foolishly, hoping the issue I experienced was a one-off failure of a J9+. I ordered another J9+ via Amazon. That order was placed on May 22, 2024, the same day I returned the original J9+. The new, replacement J9+ arrived on May 29, 2024, and the following day [today] May 30, 2024, I installed it. A room survey was first completed and then I initiated a cleaning mission of the living room. Within 3 minutes, the new J9+ stopped cleaning and announced an Error 2 – clean the green rollers fault. As before with the original J9+, there was no obstruction present. The cleaning mission was reactivated. As before, multiple times after very short periods of time, Error 2 was experienced. No Error 2 when operating without the green roller brushes and no Error 2 with the green brushes installed and cleaning on a hard surface. I note again that the carpet is a normal pile carpet that is 10 years old. It was shampooed about 10 days ago and thoroughly vacuumed before testing the Roomba. I have again started a return of the second J9+. If iRobot cannot resolve this wholly unacceptable problem, I will follow through with the return. For $900+ I should be able to expect the Roomba J9+ to work out of the box without the Error 2 problem. And it has happened with two brand new units. I am not a happy customer at all!!!

Keep your space clean, even while you’re away.
The media could not be loaded. App-controlled, schedule setting and map updating all autonomously, makes having this device a no-brainer for a two-cat apartment. As soon as i head out to the office, the iRoomba J9 gets to work. It works based around my schedule and as i set it. Meaning, when i come home i see a freshly vacuumed carpet, everyday. And for days that i want to clean a mess I’ve created, the roomba works great cleaning whatever it is that i need. The battery life means it can do your entire space on one charge and have room to continue. Clean, sleek-design means it blends in with any setting. And the self emptying dock with replaceable HEPA bags means all that cat fur and related dander is sucked up and disposed of, not leaving any behind with the powerful suction that the base or dock has. This device has made living and keeping a clean space all the more easier and effortless. Help you, your loved ones and your furry friends keep your space clean too with the IRoomba J 9 with self emptying dock !

Challenge with replacement disposal bag
Was working fine until first time replacing disposal bag. Talked with Amazon and iRobot support. No one had a resolution. Amazon was to call me the following day at specified time but no phone call as promised. My suggestion, invest your money into a better system. There are no returns.

Poor Performance
I previously had a Neato robotic vacuum and lit did a good job cleaning my home. Neato has discontinued making this vacuum and parts were hard to find. After reading the reviews on this Roomba vacuum I decided to get one. It’s cleaning job is not as good as the Neato and it skips a lot of spaces. It does not clean on the side of it docking station. Since I have a shedding dog it’s easy to see missed spots. I would not recommend this vacuum for a pet owner.
