iRobot Roomba Combo j5 robot vacuum identifying a high dirt area with Dirt Detect Technology

Under the Microscope: Evaluating the Product’s Pluses and Minuses

The Roomba series has been a household name, and for a good reason. The Roomba Combo J5, in particular, receives praise for its intelligence and mapping capabilities. Users like Stacy Tallent claim it’s the “best robot vac” they’ve ever owned, lauding its ability to map rooms, avoid stairs, and integrate seamlessly with Wi-Fi. The same model has been recognized for its quiet operation compared to earlier series, as noted by A customer, and its efficient cleaning that leaves even skeptics like A customer impressed after a comparative test with another Roomba model.

Customers who invested in the Roomba i7 appreciate its thorough cleaning and virtual fence feature. Michael describes the vacuum as having “amazing quality and cleaning,” and others echo the sentiment, highlighting the i7’s effectiveness in picking up fine dust and pet hair. Another customer, who replaced their previous Roomba with a refurbished i7, testifies to its performance, suggesting that it operates just as well as a brand-new unit.

Some users find additional convenience in specific features, such as the virtual dead zones, which are accurate and useful, according to Justin Smith. When it comes to the i7’s compatibility with the clean base, Judy West finds a workaround by swapping the dustbin with their older Roomba, leading to satisfactory results. Despite the shortcomings of certain aspects of these Roomba models, it is clear that they can be a significant time-saver and a handy addition to modern households looking to automate their cleaning routines.

However, it’s not all smooth sailing. A significant number of users have voiced their dissatisfaction with various aspects of the Roomba vacuums. For instance, Susan G criticizes the Roomba Combo J5 for its lack of a proper mapping feature, tendency to mop carpets, and difficulties with thresholds and cords. Another user, Sandrine Fouilhoux, experienced a complete letdown when the vacuum worsened the condition of a plush rug by failing to suck up lint and instead spreading it around the room.

The Roomba i7 has its own set of issues, with customers like Wendy Blake noting that it requires frequent cleaning of the rotating sweepers due to hair accumulation. John Peiffer and others have reported noisy operation and defective motors. A significant concern comes from the battery life and reliability. For instance, Alan Poznoff shares his frustration with the device not recognizing the OEM battery after only six months of use, and others mention the need to replace the battery within a short time frame.

Other cons include the robot’s inability to work properly with the clean base without an additional purchase, as Faith Ryan points out. Furthermore, customers like Sandra Dee criticize the design changes from previous models that made maintenance more difficult. Complaints about receiving used or damaged products, like those from Sarah Rich and Amazon Customer, add to the concerns about quality control and the value of investing in a Roomba.

In conclusion, while the Roomba vacuums have their proponents, the negative experiences and issues raised by a significant number of users suggest a potential gamble on the product’s performance and longevity. Prospective buyers might want to weigh these considerations carefully against the benefits before making a purchase.

People find the following negative one quite helpful. Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2023 by Wendy Blake, titled “Long Hair, even pet hair, will get wrapped around everything”
If you have a pet or family member with long hair, the rotating sweepers MUST be cleaned after every use or the accumulation of hair around the axle interferes with the machine. This accumulation of hair is what destroyed my first Roomba.

    Battery has a short lifespan!!!

This “more updated” model is worse than my first 900 series Roomba. The battery started declining after the first year. It takes 3 additional charges to finish only my living room, dining room and kitchen area. It has to recharge before I move it to the master bedroom and bath. The battery costs $90, which is a little under half of another brand Im looking at buying that has a higher rating and a battery with a reviewed longer lifespan.

    Disable ‘Full Bin’ Sensors

Works well. Much better than my old Roomba at avoiding objects and not getting tangled in cords and such. The only drawback is that the ‘bin-full’ detectors haze up with dust and falsely interpret that as a ‘bin full’ state, which ends the jobs prematurely. Fortunately you can disable these sensors and the Roomba will operate normally. I should have gotten a Clean Base to keep the Roomba operating long enough to clean the entire floor.

    Its just bad

The worst experience on top of a mediocre product. The product doesn’t work literally half the time I want to use it. Either the wifi wont connect, the robot didn’t dock and charge properly, or because I was logged out of my account. Yeah, you need to log in to use your vacuum. The robot does a poor job of picking up debris. It has a small bin. It doesn’t avoid obstacles as stated which was the main reason for me purchasing it. It requires an app to use instead of a remote control. The only positive I have found is you can control which rooms it cleans. I wish I would have returned this when I had the chance. I’ll stick to the cheap chinese knock offs that don’t want my personal information and are not mapping my house out with a camera.

    Frustrating junk

Junk. Had it less than 4 months and it stopped workong. Had to send it in which is was replaced with a ‘new’ model which consider the scratches on it when I unpacked it, it was refurbished. Again junk. Attempted to run 1 map cycle, died, lost connectivity to Internet and now it’s useless. Can’t get it to reconnect to the wifi, won’t respond to any app requests. Tried to re-add it to the app and it’s like it doesn’t exist. The app won’t recognize that it’s even in the same room. Will not buy again. A huge waste of money

    Subpar mop function

The vacuum works well on tiles. On carpet, it struggles to pick up pet hair. It tends to leave balls of dog hairs where the carpet transitions to tiles. The mop function is pretty much useless. I have large ceramic tiles on the floor with wide grouts. On wet tiles, it simply gets stuck due to lack of traction. Also the mop pad is at the back of the vacuum, so you end up with continuous half circle spots along the edges where the mop pad does not reach.

Was really pleased with the vacuum for a couple of weeks, however it quit charging. I thought I was doing something wrong, so tried multiple restarts and even got my daughter to try also. Returned to NextGen Tech specifically stating that the reason for return was that the vacuum stopped charging, HOWEVER was charged a restocking fee of $195.00 for a product that is not working. Six months after purchasing this product, I contacted support and they acknowledged that it was faulty. However, since I bought it from an unauthorized reseller on Amazon, it cannot be replaced. I will be going with Roborock instead. It’s no wonder that iRobot is losing market share to Chinese competitors. Their products are subpar, do not perform as well as others, and to make matters worse, they have terrible customer service.

Get it with the self empty bin

Love the vacuum, but has a couple of downfalls. 1. It tends to get lost and confused when using the mop attachment 2. It does struggle a bit with slightly larger items, like small rocks or cat food etc 3. If you don’t clean the filter every single time you vacuum, it will clog and have very poor suction. I assume that this problem would be solved if you had the self empty bin since it would suck the opposite way and clean the filter out that way. However the navigation, mapping, and overall vacuuming seems to do well. I do like this vacuum and would buy it again, However I would get it with the self empty bin if I were to do it over again. I don’t mind emptying the bin myself, but it is annoying that the filter clogs so quickly. To buy a self empty base and bin as an upgrade is roughly the same price as just buying a whole new one.

Hope your iRobot doesn’t stop working after 21 days like mine

My iRobot j5 was working fine until it tried to update the software. It started the update on its own and never stopped. Because it was updating, the iRobot stopped cleaning. I contacted iRobot and they talked me through the rebooting process but it didn’t work. The iRobot representative told me the iRobot was broken, could not be fixed, and to send it back. I contacted Amazon, told them I was returning the product and I was doing so under the advisement of iRobot. Amazon told me I could return the broken iRobot but they would NOT replace it with the same item I had just purchased. They offered to replace the j5 with a much cheaper iRobot that wasn’t nearly as good as the one I had already purchased. My other option was to receive a refund of the amount I paid for my iRobot j5 on Cyber Monday. Since I took advantage of a Cyber Monday sale and ended up with a product that had an issue that was beyond my control, I am unable to return a defective iRobot j5 for another j5 because the price has increased. This does not seem fair and I’m not sure how Amazon can get away with it. I guess my words of advice are be careful what you buy from Amazon when it’s on sale. Very disappointed in Amazon.

After 1 year of use, very pleased with it

I felt it was only appropriate to wait for a year of using this vacuum before reviewing it. I love it. It is an absolute game changer. I can only speak for the vacuuming because I’ve never tried the mopping. My only real complaints with it are battery life is kind of short, requires a charge within almost each job it does if it’s longer than an hour. Other than that no real issues. The app will occasionally lose my schedule (happened maybe 2x) which is a little annoying but not a huge deal. Most issues I’ve had with it have all been resolved with a simple reset. Nothing major speak about. Does a great job cleaning, doesn’t really get stuck that often. Maps pretty well and the smart predictions for the map are pretty cool. Made its own zone for the litter box and around the oven which was nice. Not super quiet… not extremely loud. You’re better off buying knock off replacement brushes and filters though. Overall I’d recommend.

Far more trouble than worth even when it works

After the first use, unit refused to clean giving a bin full error. When the bin was cleaned, it never go more than 5 feet before returning to the base with the same error. Tech support kept telling me that meant I wasn’t cleaning the sensors properly. I finally had to turn the sensors off. It consistently read the vacuum bin as the mop/vacuum bin combo. Repeated calls to tech support, resets, and reboots was never able to resolve the issue past the next use. The biggest problem has been an error for path blocked followed by a refusal to run. The last attempt to move it was to put it into an empty room that is 10 x 12 feet. It leaves the base, moves two feet, and then aborts cleaning. Repeated calls to tech support, resetting the map, rebooting, resetting the roomba has not been able to fix the issue past a few cleanings. Overall, it misses far more scheduled cleaning that it ever did. This is the second Roomba I have had. The first was a simple non-mapping type. I should have stuck with it.

    1YR Review – Doesn’t really work anymore

I absolutely loved this Roomba “at first”. It did an excellent job of cleaning. Over the last year, one spinner is completely broken & it really doesn’t suck up anything like the beginning. It slowly started working worse and worse. I would say it was at its “best” for about 8 months. For the price, I thought it would last a few years… but I am looking at replacing after only 1 year of use. I did replace the filters and spinners as required. I don’t have kids. My home is only a 2 bed – 2 bath w no stairs. Worked amazing at the beginning. Just not built to last.

Errors that cannot be cleared and parts that cannot be sourced to replace.

I bought this product and it worked okay for awhile and less than one year i kept getting an error message to clean the bin which i kept doing. i contacted amazon and I got little help and was referred to the manufacturer and restarted the vacuum to try to clear error. One year later and I cannot get the part….So it really was a waste of money.

    Works well

Happy with my purchase. I’ve occasionally flipped it over to pull out hairs that build up in the motors. It removes ALL dust from the floor. I’ve not used the mop part yet. If anyone has a problem with the mapping or the robot going crazy, just reboot it by holding down the power button. I have a 1300sq ft apartment and it cleans all the tile on one charge. I do lift my table chairs up and try to have no barriers for this robot. Luckily, I got a great price on it. Under 200 during the summer, refurbished

Pet poop detector does NOT work

I’ve liked this product most of the time I’ve had it, but coming home to find my entire carpet (the whole room) covered in dragged poop… Ugh. It’s supposed to be able to detect messes and avoid them, but besides this incident, it has also run over bowls of cat food when the cats don’t eat fast enough. These aren’t subtle, so the detection obviously doesn’t work.
