iRobot Roomba Combo j5 robot vacuum identifying a high dirt area with Dirt Detect Technology

Under the Microscope: Evaluating the Product’s Pluses and Minuses

The Roomba series has been a household name, and for a good reason. The Roomba Combo J5, in particular, receives praise for its intelligence and mapping capabilities. Users like Stacy Tallent claim it’s the “best robot vac” they’ve ever owned, lauding its ability to map rooms, avoid stairs, and integrate seamlessly with Wi-Fi. The same model has been recognized for its quiet operation compared to earlier series, as noted by A customer, and its efficient cleaning that leaves even skeptics like A customer impressed after a comparative test with another Roomba model.

Customers who invested in the Roomba i7 appreciate its thorough cleaning and virtual fence feature. Michael describes the vacuum as having “amazing quality and cleaning,” and others echo the sentiment, highlighting the i7’s effectiveness in picking up fine dust and pet hair. Another customer, who replaced their previous Roomba with a refurbished i7, testifies to its performance, suggesting that it operates just as well as a brand-new unit.

Some users find additional convenience in specific features, such as the virtual dead zones, which are accurate and useful, according to Justin Smith. When it comes to the i7’s compatibility with the clean base, Judy West finds a workaround by swapping the dustbin with their older Roomba, leading to satisfactory results. Despite the shortcomings of certain aspects of these Roomba models, it is clear that they can be a significant time-saver and a handy addition to modern households looking to automate their cleaning routines.

However, it’s not all smooth sailing. A significant number of users have voiced their dissatisfaction with various aspects of the Roomba vacuums. For instance, Susan G criticizes the Roomba Combo J5 for its lack of a proper mapping feature, tendency to mop carpets, and difficulties with thresholds and cords. Another user, Sandrine Fouilhoux, experienced a complete letdown when the vacuum worsened the condition of a plush rug by failing to suck up lint and instead spreading it around the room.

The Roomba i7 has its own set of issues, with customers like Wendy Blake noting that it requires frequent cleaning of the rotating sweepers due to hair accumulation. John Peiffer and others have reported noisy operation and defective motors. A significant concern comes from the battery life and reliability. For instance, Alan Poznoff shares his frustration with the device not recognizing the OEM battery after only six months of use, and others mention the need to replace the battery within a short time frame.

Other cons include the robot’s inability to work properly with the clean base without an additional purchase, as Faith Ryan points out. Furthermore, customers like Sandra Dee criticize the design changes from previous models that made maintenance more difficult. Complaints about receiving used or damaged products, like those from Sarah Rich and Amazon Customer, add to the concerns about quality control and the value of investing in a Roomba.

In conclusion, while the Roomba vacuums have their proponents, the negative experiences and issues raised by a significant number of users suggest a potential gamble on the product’s performance and longevity. Prospective buyers might want to weigh these considerations carefully against the benefits before making a purchase.

People find the following negative one quite helpful. Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2023 by Wendy Blake, titled “Long Hair, even pet hair, will get wrapped around everything”
If you have a pet or family member with long hair, the rotating sweepers MUST be cleaned after every use or the accumulation of hair around the axle interferes with the machine. This accumulation of hair is what destroyed my first Roomba.

cant use it without downloading an app

this is my 8th roomba product. i have always been very happy with their products up until this one. this does not work unless you download an app. i just want this go out on a daily basis and vacuum my house, like all my past ones have done, its not that complicated. its absolutely ridiculous that i have to download an app to make it work. i dont use apps, so i have a super expensive piece of useless plastic that sits on a charger in the corner of my house because it wont work without an app. ive been a loyal roomba customer for 14 years but this will be my last one.

    Won’t stay charged

This did not last a year! It never stayed charged real good. Would run about half the time it should. This is my third Roomba and the WORST OF THE WORST!! Contacted the seller and did not even get a response. Do not buy this vacuum unless you want one just to look at. The ones I’ve had in the past lasted several years.

    Doesn’t work half the time.

I finally decided to upgrade to an iRobot branded vac after going thru some others that were decent. It makes it back to the base but only charges itself 25% of the time without my having to rearrange it dozens of times. Won’t be buying this brand again.

The robot vacuum cleaner was sent broken.

I decided to take a risk and buy a replacement for my old robot vacuum cleaner. The replacement did not work out, the robot vacuum cleaner was sent broken. I installed the application, connected the robot, turned on cleaning, the robot gives error # 19 “problem undocking from the docking station”, and when you remove it from the docking station and turn on cleaning, the robot reports that it has a “problem with the height difference”. As I understand it, the robot’s height difference sensors, which are located around the robot vacuum cleaner, do not work or are glitching. I rebooted it, returned it to factory settings, nothing helped! The robot vacuum cleaner is broken! I contacted customer support, but since the final delivery outside the US was long (I received the package on November 15), the warranty period for returning the robot vacuum cleaner expired on November 15, so they politely sent me away and recommended that I contact the manufacturer, but I would not have been able to return it anyway. I registered on the manufacturer’s website, entered the serial number of the robot vacuum cleaner and received a refusal, since such a serial number was already registered. I understand that the robot vacuum cleaner is refurbished and someone has already registered it, but what should I do? In general, this is not a purchase, but a disappointment, my old robot vacuum cleaner Deebot Ecovax 900 will work for now.) I do not understand why such things are not checked before shipping and are treated so irresponsibly! I do not recommend buying such things, especially if they are sent outside the US, it’s a lottery.

No repair support. Don’t buy this.

Started having errors a few months after purchase. “Dust bin full” I talked to customer support and they have no service center to repairs these. There’s an IR sensor across the dust bin and it refuses to run because the sensor will not clear. Any errors that come up, they tell you to fix it yourself.

    Inferior

I’ve had this for 18 months. Now it’s completely dead. Spent hours on the phone with iRobot several days. They were nice, but my only recourse is to spend $300 for repair or trade in for $100. I’m didn’t spend $600 for a product that lasts only 18 months. Never again!

    Sorry I purchased it!

Purchased Roomba J3 eleven months ago. Had trouble with it much of the time since. At times it simply refused to vacuum one or the other of the two different programs I set it up for (upper and lower levels of my home.). Sometimes it did part of the job, then went back to its “home.” At first it was fun to watch it work, but now it simply is an aggravation. Wish I had sent it back in time to get my money back. I tried to do all of the important maintenance items (there are many) but I’m finally throwing in the towel. Will go back to my old canister vac that has stood the test of time.

Worst product I had in recent times. Do not buy

I don’t have pets, using Roomba for last 11 months in a single family home. This product have so many issues – It cannot complete cleaning a 2300 sqft house in one pass. Need at least 2-3 rounds – Battery won’t last more than 45mins – Shows bin full every 30 mins and have to dump it out. – Mopping liquid container is small and it leaks – Stalls in the middle of the cleaning and stay there thinking. Have to do manual override – Always have some or other problems troubleshooting through their app. In every clean cycle I spend 10-15 mins just troubleshooting these issues. Sometimes I feel manual vacuuming is much faster than maintaining this piece of junk.

Very useless and has a lot of flaws

Bought this 6 months ago. It worked fine for the first two months. After that, it started messing with the map layout on its own, marked bathroom as living room. Started erroring out and going back to home without cleaning. Major red flag is, they say it has mop feature but the mop hardly has any water when mopping and cleaning, it gets dry after 5 minutes and the water doesn’t wet the mop after. Very useless product. Had a perfect map for my home when I first bought, now the map is completly messed up and it hardly works.

Caution when buying Used Very Good version offered

Ordered a Used Very Good unit that while not in original packaging did not appear to have been used at all. However, and here’s the heads up, we received a base model iRobot 600 series that vacuums only and NOT the J5 that has the vacuum and mop capability. We double-checked our order and receipt that all confirm we ordered a J5. Customer service promptly made it right and we decided to keep the unit sent after all. The 600 series functions very well albeit without mop option and is a solid replacement for our former iRobot that retired after over 10 years of use. The four stars and not five is to reflect the error in advertising and not the performance of iRobot. If we were rating iRobot and the 600 series, we would give 5 stars.

After 5 months, the motor on the side brush quit working. After several phone calls, no one helped me file a claim. This is within the original warranty agreement and I also purchased a three year extended warranty. I was told I needed to provide them with a copy of my receipt even though they could see when I purchased the iRobot. I forwarded the receipt by email (three times!!) and they said they didn’t get it and could not help me unless they got a copy of the receipt. So if you decide to purchase this item just know that customer service will NOT help you if there is an issue.

They told me this seller was not authorized to sell this model of Roomba and for me to get servicing I would need to pay $288 or buy a new Roomba and charging station. Dead after 2 years

I liked this robot vacuum until it died 2 years after getting it. I call product support and all they can offer me is $330 to return it to get it refurbished or $150 credit to buy a new one. I’d always had iRobot vacuums in the past and they lasted 5 to 10 years, very disappointing to have this one only last too. It shows how their quality seems to be dropping.

    Doesn’t work well

Despite being capable of programming maps, it does not remember them. Cleans just a portion of a room. I’ll re-map it, but the same thing happens again. Then, sometimes, it will clean the whole room. This was after about one month of light use. It also just stopped mopping. All sorts of issues. Still, it’s nice to have the floor vacuumed, even if I have to keep re-running it.

I got this vacuum back in November 2023 and I have had to retire it after getting a couple of black cats. I purchased it to run at night after quiet hours in my condo unit. It does a good job at cleaning the floors and transitioning from hardwood to rugs. My condo is a little under 700sq ft and looks clean, but the vacuum bin would regularly be full after a complete run of the condo. It was nice to be able to turn it on and go about my night and leave it to do the vacuuming. The problems with it came a few months ago when I got two full grown black cats. I was hoping with the obstacle avoidance it would not be an issue, but it actually charged at my smaller cat a few times like it would when it sensed dirt. My bigger cat was more cautious and avoided it, but my smaller cat had her paws run over twice and her tail once. The vacuum rides a little higher than most I have seen which is great for transitioning to rugs, but also made it so it would run over my cat’s extremities before bumping into her. She was fine each time, but I just don’t want to risk it actually hurting her. It also seems to struggle with cat hair. It would run for 2-5 minutes and then stop and send my phone a warning that the dust bin was full, but when I opened it up I would find the dust bin nearly empty and the opening clogged with cat hair. I have put it away in storage and pulled my old remote control vacuum out of retirement and it is working much better with the cats since I am controlling it I can avoid them or stop it, unfortunately I can’t just set it to run and do other things, but the safety of my cats is more important to me than saving 20 minutes and I was having to babysit this one anyways with the constant bin full warnings every few minutes.

    Don’t buy this product!

Can’t map in a thousand attempts. Uses visual input and the bumper sensor to map. Doesn’t have a lidar. The same map that my roborock generates in a minute takes this machine several 1 hour long attempts. Even after that the map sucks. Dustbin full error on empty dustbin all the time. Cleaning the sensors doesn’t help. App is stupid and useless. This is hands down my worst purchase on Amazon ever.

    Lies…

I loved my i3 but it did get caught in wires and one of my biggest fears was the dogs having an accident in the night so I splurged on the j7. Save your money! First night, caught on a shoe lace which you would think would also look like a wire. I could let that slide. But twice in 2 weeks I had to use a qtip to get the dog poop out and throw out all of the extra parts. After 2 hours of scrubbing the floors and q-tips with roomba, it doesn’t work!!!! Save your money. Also, I dyeing my i3 did a better job

Died in less than 2 years

Had so many issues with this vacuum needing to reboot and call customer services every couple months. It’s less than 2 years old and just died. All they could do was give me a trade in value for “up to $150”. A waste of money I wouldn’t buy another one of these.

    Easy to use

I love my roomba J7. This is my second one. The first one is alive and doing well. This is for our basement. I am so amazed how well it picks up. It never disappoints.

    Good upgrade

I had a i4 that worked ok for me. It worked well enough that I decided to replace i with a newer model, and I choice the j7. The j7 is a big jump forward in mapping and suction. I don’t use the obstacle avoidance feature, but i understand it is a useful feature if needed. Very happy with this model vacuum.

    changed our lives!

we are so glad we made this purchase as it has literally changed our lives. we have it programmed to vacuum specific zones of the house at certain times/days. we have dogs so the container does fill up but its not a hassle to empty it after each session. so glad we got this!

    Does not work!

The product was in great condition, however, since it was a refurb it was registered to someone else’s account so I can’t use the app with the product. As you know, the app controls all the features. So my advice is to avoid any refurbs of this product!

    A constant source of frustration.

Poorly designed. Does a bad job, the dust sensor always says the bin is full because the intake is a big mess of rubber. Terribly hard to clean. Just makes me sad. I’m going back to neato bot

Good at a few things, bad at most.

I’ve had the thing for over a year. What I really needed was top notch obstacle avoidance due to all the cat toys my 4 cats leave about. As far as avoidance it’s pretty good, I’d say better than most. That is all it has going for it. First it’s noisy. Really loud. Next problem, it takes forever to clean the house. 4 plus hours with at least recharges for a 1600 sq ft house. It really doesn’t seem to have much logic as far as how it vacuums. It’s predecessor and the my one in the basement are methodical. They go around the perimeter and the go back and forth until the room is done. This one seems a lot more random. It also hangs up a lot, jamming itself under furniture and catching itself on an obstacles. I’d say maybe every 3rd time it doesn’t finish because it gets stuck. I would not recommend this vacuum.

    Torn inside

Only had box for less than six months. The mesh material inside has a hole. No idea how. Cat litter now just empties in tray

Mapping is Wonderful, but 675 Cleans Better

My model 675 died after 5 years, so I got this version for the mapping capability. I love the mapping feature, but it does not clean as well as the 675. The 675 has a brush. This model has some rubber “brushes”. They say these brushes don’t get tangled with hair, and that is true, but they also don’t pick up dirt well. I’d rather spend the time cleaning out hair.

If mopping is important to you, this is Not a good idea

The vacuum and emptying bin is very nice. This robot needs to much assistance for the mop feature. When the unit returns to the unit to recharge ( the battery life seems small compared to the Bissell spinwave robot) the wicking doesn’t stop so it puddles solution on and around the unit which gets vacuumed up the next time you use vacuum only bin. Also, even a hairball mixed with dry food in the shape of poo gets vacuumed up so the pet mess identity feature needs improvement. Overall, I think there are design flaws. Both Amazon and Roomba customer service is very good though. I like the mapping. This is and the auto empty bin features are what will have me consider another model of this brand

    Missing Parts

The box looked old, and the robot had some issues. Additionally, I didn’t receive any extra items like the brush, filter, or original documentation for starting the robot. I wouldn’t really recommend this.

It’s got all the features I wanted.

It doesn’t run over objects scattered around the house like dog toys. I set up a cleaning schedule so that all the rooms get taken care of when the least traffic will be affected. It Does take pictures of objects in its path to learn how to handle them in the future ( shoes, cords, pets, towels or patterns on rugs) after it completed the cleaning, if you review the photos you have the option to do a tidy up run after picking up the temporary obstacles. I have a few no-go zones and it is respectful to stay out of them. I mapped the house and after moving stuff, had it do new map runs to detect new vacuum areas. It knows the difference between a hard floor or a carpet/rug, and unlike a pervious model can navigate the change in elevation, from hard surface to carpet and back, without telling me it’s stuck on a cliff. The only down side is the auto empty is loud but short. So I do not recommend using while a light sleeper or young child is resting . 100% would buy again or recommend to a friend!
