iRobot Roomba Combo j5 robot vacuum identifying a high dirt area with Dirt Detect Technology

Under the Microscope: Evaluating the Product’s Pluses and Minuses

The Roomba series has been a household name, and for a good reason. The Roomba Combo J5, in particular, receives praise for its intelligence and mapping capabilities. Users like Stacy Tallent claim it’s the “best robot vac” they’ve ever owned, lauding its ability to map rooms, avoid stairs, and integrate seamlessly with Wi-Fi. The same model has been recognized for its quiet operation compared to earlier series, as noted by A customer, and its efficient cleaning that leaves even skeptics like A customer impressed after a comparative test with another Roomba model.

Customers who invested in the Roomba i7 appreciate its thorough cleaning and virtual fence feature. Michael describes the vacuum as having “amazing quality and cleaning,” and others echo the sentiment, highlighting the i7’s effectiveness in picking up fine dust and pet hair. Another customer, who replaced their previous Roomba with a refurbished i7, testifies to its performance, suggesting that it operates just as well as a brand-new unit.

Some users find additional convenience in specific features, such as the virtual dead zones, which are accurate and useful, according to Justin Smith. When it comes to the i7’s compatibility with the clean base, Judy West finds a workaround by swapping the dustbin with their older Roomba, leading to satisfactory results. Despite the shortcomings of certain aspects of these Roomba models, it is clear that they can be a significant time-saver and a handy addition to modern households looking to automate their cleaning routines.

However, it’s not all smooth sailing. A significant number of users have voiced their dissatisfaction with various aspects of the Roomba vacuums. For instance, Susan G criticizes the Roomba Combo J5 for its lack of a proper mapping feature, tendency to mop carpets, and difficulties with thresholds and cords. Another user, Sandrine Fouilhoux, experienced a complete letdown when the vacuum worsened the condition of a plush rug by failing to suck up lint and instead spreading it around the room.

The Roomba i7 has its own set of issues, with customers like Wendy Blake noting that it requires frequent cleaning of the rotating sweepers due to hair accumulation. John Peiffer and others have reported noisy operation and defective motors. A significant concern comes from the battery life and reliability. For instance, Alan Poznoff shares his frustration with the device not recognizing the OEM battery after only six months of use, and others mention the need to replace the battery within a short time frame.

Other cons include the robot’s inability to work properly with the clean base without an additional purchase, as Faith Ryan points out. Furthermore, customers like Sandra Dee criticize the design changes from previous models that made maintenance more difficult. Complaints about receiving used or damaged products, like those from Sarah Rich and Amazon Customer, add to the concerns about quality control and the value of investing in a Roomba.

In conclusion, while the Roomba vacuums have their proponents, the negative experiences and issues raised by a significant number of users suggest a potential gamble on the product’s performance and longevity. Prospective buyers might want to weigh these considerations carefully against the benefits before making a purchase.

People find the following negative one quite helpful. Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2023 by Wendy Blake, titled “Long Hair, even pet hair, will get wrapped around everything”
If you have a pet or family member with long hair, the rotating sweepers MUST be cleaned after every use or the accumulation of hair around the axle interferes with the machine. This accumulation of hair is what destroyed my first Roomba.

175 reviews for iRobot Roomba Combo j5 – 2-in-1 Vacuum & Mop, Smart Mapping, Obstacle Avoidance

  1. Allen

    Extremely dissatisfied.

This is our 4th robovac and my least favorite. The tower still uses bags which have to be replaced, more money. It’s very expensive for doing the same job as the far cheaper Shark we used to have. It’s far louder,. To the point everyone hates it when it starts because you just have to leave whatever room it’s in. Parts already needing repair after less than 2 months according to the notifications. It gets stuck probably 5 out 7 days and the shark was maybe once a month. Where it does clean it does a good job but everything else about it is awful. I had a vacation or I probably would have returned this but it’s been too long now. Will never buy this brand again and probably do a hell of a lot better with one half the price from a brand like Shark or maybe even Eufy. Absolutely let down.

Literally Blows (lots of air in front)! Huge Waste of Money! UPDATED

UPDATE: Every day this product is more useless. 1-It gets stuck on every bath mat and throw rug. 2-A sloped base bar stool with nothing around it makes the unit seize up and think it’s on a cliff. 3-The app notifications to replace parts start so early it’s a painfully obvious gambit to get you to buy more than necessary. 4-After a few months wherein we’ve moved nothing, the unit keeps bumping into the same cabinets in the same spot. Then runs out of battery and has to break the run into two annoying sessions. My fifth grader could write better code. At this point, I’m considering donating it for a tax write off, because it’s ludicrously noisy and inefficient. We have one dog and hard floors, no carpet. We bought this as a simple way to keep from having to vacuum frequently. We’ve gone to significant pains to ensure it has simple, clear paths. It’s run twice a day. It misses SO MUCH that it’s all but pointless. It blows so much air in front of it, that all of the hair it’s supposed to pick up just gets blown into recesses where it doesn’t go.

    Don’t bother…this vacuum sucks

I am so disappointed in this vacuum. I thought I was upgrading from a four year old Shark. Based on the price that would be a reasonable assumption. While it does avoid objects, it also avoids its fundamental job…vacuuming!

Design Flaw: Debris DOES NOT Go Into Bin Stays Stuck Behind Brushes

While the j7 (7150) does have great pickup for pet hair, unfortunately the pet hair stays behind the brushes not having been sucked into the bin. This design flaw results in an error message indicating that the bin is full and to “empty the bin.” In fact, there is little or not debris in the bin but, instead, the debris is stuck into the space between the brushes and the bin.

The newer models seem to get worse

The first Roomba we bought was 10 years ago, and it was amazing. We assumed that each time we upgraded and got a newer one it would get better and better…. And they’ve only gotten crappier and crappier. Literally the only thing that impresses us with this J5 is the self-empting function. After that…. Kind of a piece of crap. It gets lost in the house all the time, random error messages that usually just resolve after spending hours researching it, sucks on carpet, the brushes don’t even spin to grab pet hair- so it literally just pushes hair around the house. All in all, this will probably be the last time we buy this brand.

And the mob can team just dumps all the water , doesn’t hold the water in it all anymore and to replace that little cartridge is a hundred bucks! Not only is it worthless but the support is a total rip off! We just threw the whole thing in the garage and have gone back to a manual vacuum cleaner. Actually works and there’s no headaches.

    Zero stars if I could

I should’ve trusted the negative reviews and just spent the extra money for a current model that hasn’t been discontinued. Purchased during Prime Day sale. This isn’t my first Roomba and have had decent experience with previous robot vacuum until it ran over dog poop, but that’s a whole other ordeal. Upon arrival, the charging station looked used! Was delivered dirty/dusty and contact points were visibly worn, Roomba would not charge right out of the box, no matter how many times I tried to clean off the points or how long I left it on the charging station. Immediately back in the box for a refund. Ridiculous and a waste of my time.

    Not as good as expected

The vacuum is ok if you don’t have high expectations for it. Our house is all hardwood or tile with some area rugs and we’ve already been through 2 sets of the edge sweeping brushes because of the rugs. And the carpet is not that long. The last set of brushes was destroyed in about 2 hours because the vacuum decided to stay in one place and keep bumping into a bed frame until it stopped working. Performance on tile and hardwood is not much better. It often misses fairly obvious areas on the floor or just goes to the wrong place. Several times it has been sent to the kitchen and ended up under the living room couch even though it is a keep out zone on the map. Overall not impressed. Easier, faster and better results to just use a regular vacuum or broom.

Works well for me and my lifestyle

I’m a busy person. When I’m not busy, vacuuming is far from my mind. So it doesn’t get done as often as it should. I bought the j7 to help keep the floors clean. It’s not going to vacuum as well as a big, full sized vacuum. But it will do it regularly and get to places you won’t with your full sized vac, like all under your sofa. I’ve noticed and appreciated the difference already. I like how it maps the house, as I feel it works better than older bump to navigate models. I’m considering getting one for work!

    Vacuum does a great job!!

This brand has always done a great job cleaning! This is our second iRobot roomba vacuum, the first lasted almost 10 years and did a great job. When we upgraded the technology had gotten so much better! We don’t have to worry about it running over cords or dog accidents. The app is easy to set up and so easy to use! You can label each room and set schedules. I do wish I would have bought the one that empties itself but its more of a want then a need lol Another great thing is it will go back to charge and then finishes the job so the only thing you really have to do is empty it.

    Disappointed

While it has done a good job at picking up dirt, dog hair doen’t make it to the bin, but instead quickly blocks the entrance into the bin. This leads to an error message “empty the bin”. Fixing this requires pulling the dog hair from the entrance of the bin by hand and sometimes removing the roller to get at the hair. With our older Roomba this was never a problem.

    Fails After One Year

I purchased, and briefly benefited from owning a Roomba J7. I have a medium sized home and work two jobs, so I find having a cleaning robot fits in my life. However, over the last few months, my J7 has had error after error (mostly error 15 and 41 which are software errors) and very rarely completes a job. After troubleshooting the issues at home with what iRobot recommends (like removing the battery, rebooting, factory reset, remapping, etc., it still will not work. I called iRobot support, and they said that my only option is to trade it in and buy a new one. I only JUST hit 100 lifetime hours of cleaning. Why would I waste my money on another robot from this company if it fails in less than two years and their only solution is to get a $100 trade in credit so I can spend another $800 on another. I think I am going to give this one away and just buy the latest Roborock S8 and be done with it.

Never work well; high maintenance; stops work after 2 years

The robot vacuum never works well and finally stops working after 2 years. It keeps having navigation issues and getting itself stuck (sometimes when it seems there’s nothing around it). It does a bad job in cleaning: obvious dirt left behind, terrible at cleaning corners, and especially bad at cleaning carpet—it never effectively picks up the hair on the carpet. The robot vacuum requires A LOT of maintenance—I have to clean it to remove the hair and pet hair almost every time using it and the hair is entangled in EVERY part of the machine. The app always claims that dust bin is full when it’s essentially empty. The robot vacuum finally stops working after 2 years. It keeps reporting that rolling brushes need cleaning even after I remove those rolling brushes. Thanks to its high maintenance requirement, I had a lot of experience in removing hair from every part of the robot but this time it does not work after I have tried everything. I will never buy anything similar to this series.

Not good mapping, autonomy is basic, app is useless

I’ve had one previous robot vacuum, a Wyze vac. It is a LIDAR based vacuum. Comparing this to that one, this roomba has atrocious self awareness of where it is. It cleans seemingly random sometimes. When you set up specific cleaning zones and tell it to go clean, it gets lost, really bizarre experience. The app is next to useless as far as actual features and functionality, and even the ones that are built in there other than simply telling the robot to clean is useless or broken. This robot is a couple hundred more than my Wyze and honestly I’m not impressed at all yet. I’ll give it a few months and update this as my experience matures.

Bad Product and Bad Customer Service

The second time I used this vacuum the brush arm broke and I had to put on the replacement that it comes with. Then 2 months after my purchase, the brush arm that is supposed to spin around collecting dirt completely stopped spinning. iRobot is sending me a replacement brush motor that I have to install myself and wouldn’t even give me an extra brush with the motor to make up for the defective one that it came with. And for anyone wondering, all of my doormats are low profile and there are no weird circumstances with my house that should have caused this. I had another robot vacuum from a different brand for 6 years before this one. Don’t believe the branding, iRobot is cooked.

Roomba died about a month after purchase.

Roomba was fantastic for the first month or so of owning it, then it died and wouldn’t turn on again. Product is dead and I can’t return it. Not worth it in the slightest. NEVER BUY FROM AMAZON REFURBISHED.

Broken and does not work! Very dissapointing!!

It came with small broken parts. It’s the first time I buy something described as “very good” and not only has signs of being used but also does not work, and physically you can tell it’s broken! I’m very disappointed and going to return it!

Easy to set up J7 is not self-emptying as indicated in product description

Replaced an older model Roomba with this product. This product was easy to set up. Seems to be mapping and cleaning without issues. Be aware that the product description of the J7 states it is self-emptying…it is not. The J7+ is self-emptying. Bought extra self-emptying bags per product add on recommendations which will be returned. Hoping the pet waste detection function does it’s job as our previous Roomba did not have that feature.

    Terrible

Simply put, this is a terrible design. The mouth to the dustbin is tight, leading it to clogging up after almost every run. The battery will randomly disconnect, throwing up an error 15, and when its reset it doesnt resume the job, instead it will simply run around until the battery dies. The mapping is terrible and inaccurate. Doing additional mapping runs DO NOT alter the maps layout. The mop isn’t a mop, it just runs a wet rag behind it. Really, really bad. I’ve put in for a refund.

    Spend the extra money.

Great vaccuum. Very quiet. EXCELLENT suction. I live in a small one bedroom apt and it mapped it perfectly. Does nice neat rows and doesn’t have trouble finding it’s base like others.

Works even better than I expected

It took it a awhile to map out my house, I had to call customer service. They were great help and patient with me. But once it got my house figured out, it works even better than I expected it too. The suction is great. The mop part is a very light mopping, so that part isn’t great, but the vacuum part is great.

    iRobot is a SCAM

The media could not be loaded. We bought this j7 as an upgrade for our old non big name brand robot vacuum and were we so so wrong. Within 3 months, the vacuum bin pops out randomly while vacuuming and decided to run over multiple obsticles, even a large mirror and knocking it over, breaking it. Filed for warranty claim and they sent a new robot, great, but not really. Within a couple of days, the new robots side brush decided to SQUEEL and make a horrible noise every time it started spinning. Filed a warranty claim, they sent a replacement brush. Great, but not so great. Throughout getting the new brush until today, the mapping has been horrible. It would say it completed clean the whole house but have only done 3/6 sections of the house. Fast forward till today, robot is a year and change old, decided to stop working. Filed a complain that it stopped working (we have a fluffy cat, so we know when the robot doesn’t do its job). Customer service said its an “internal error” and can’t be serviced so now we are stuck with a brick. What a great robot from a big name brand company. YUCK

Nothing stops it! Never gets stuck and leaves stuff on the floor alone!

I love this robovac!! I’ve had another brand for years and it would get stuck under the furniture or in the closet. It broke all the time, I had to replace the bumper and reboot it often. It would get strings stuck in its wheels. This one ignores paper or clothes on the floor; it never gets stuck; it leaves the cords alone. It keeps going till it runs out of battery, charges itself and then finishes the job. It gives me pictures of things it went around. One small complaint. It doesn’t stop when it’s full and it gets full very fast because I have 3 dogs with lots of hair. I have to pause it and empty it several times when it’s working. I should’ve bought one with a bigger tank. But that just shows how great it is at picking up the dog hair and dirt!

    Do not buy

This quit working efficiently after three months. It continually tells me to “empty the bin” even when there is very little in it and now runs for less and than fifteen minutes at a time. If you have any hair in your house, this machine cannot handle it. I would not buy again.

    Very disappointed

After a few months of use I am very disappointed. It does not pick up animal hair nearly as well as my previous Rumba and the roller retainer mechanism seems to be faulty allowing the cleaning rollers to become dislodged. L spend more time putting the parts that fall off back on than it would take me to vacuum. It is pretty much garbage. DEFINITELY would not buy this again.

    Non stop problems.

Never going to buy Roomba again. This is my second Roomba and although it was “smarter” and didn’t get stuck as much, its had non-stop problems from the beginning. Customer service kept sending new parts and they didn’t improve the problem (Roomba kept saying “empty the bin” even though the bin was empty and clean). Eventually the warranty ran out, that problem continued plus a slew of other issues like loss of suction power. I have had this machine for less than 2 years. Disappointed.

Terrible customer service and product will act up quickly

I’ve only had this product six months. I keep the parts maintained and cleaned, I follow all instructions from the app to do so – but it’s already acting crazy. Gets “stuck” with no obstacles, frequently gets lost in rooms that it isn’t scheduled to clean, battery dies during a clean job (when it should return to base when battery is low)… but the worst of all is that I have reached out to customer service at least 5 times and I currently have two open cases… and they just do not respond. I am appalled at this extremely poor customer service for such a high dollar vacuum.
