What’s Good, Bad, and Ugly About the Self-Empty Robot Vacuum? An In-Depth Review
One user, Casey Johnson, was extremely satisfied with the Shark RV1001AE IQ Robot Self-Empty XL’s performance in a home with hardwood floors and pets, stating that it’s a “game changer” and “She definitely needs dumped every few days being that we have four dogs that shed. But she has no problem cleaning up all the dog hair twice a day for us. We absolutely love her.”
Another user, Stacey, emphasized the vacuum’s efficiency and convenience, expressing that it “keeps my first floor spotless, running it once or twice a day,” and plans to buy another for the second floor. The ease of setup was also a highlight, with Stacey noting, “It was a breeze to set up. Highly recommend.”
Desertrosebud, a senior citizen, praised the ease of use and the self-emptying feature, saying “Rosie works great and does a thorough job of cleaning my house… Rosie goes back to the base when needed to empty the debris into the bagless base container, then goes right back out to finish the job.”
On the downside, Vonnie mentioned that the vacuum “doesn’t pick up the dirt very well and doesn’t reach all the main spots,” requiring a second run with a traditional vacuum, which was disappointing given the price.
Yaroslav Nikolenko expressed frustration with the robot’s functionality, stating it “doesn’t clean enough properly,” and faced issues with it “sometimes turns on nighttime very loud.” The connectivity issues also made it difficult to use, as it “sometimes disconnected from application and can’t be used.”
The stars speak of…
Opinions about this product were divided in such a proportion among the buyers.
This robot is working great for our family home so far. It has mapped the main floor perfectly. Each day it runs it gets better and better at getting every inch of the room area. We have used it for 1 week daily and each day I am surprised on how much pet hair and dust it picks up. I would recommend this product for this price range. Worth the money.
Not the worst but definitely not the best, doesn’t pick up the dirt very well and doesn’t reach all the main spots I got it for. I have to go over again with my own vacuum and that defeats the purpose especially for the price of it. Overall I’m not too thrilled with it if I’m being honest

Loud and not really meant for pet homes
The vacuum is way louder than I had expected from Shark. It also has been in use twice and already the brush roll is stuck and I was asked to remove the hair. I thought it would be heavier duty than this. Super bummed that it’s not close to what I expected.
Jon Abbott –
My brush roll is stuck. Error #4
The vacuum worked well for four months. But now we cannot get past the prompt that the brush roll is stuck. Tried to clean it off, but it doesn’t help. Not sure now whether to throw it in the garbage after five months or…

Unfortunately doesn’t last
I waited to do my review to ensure I got some usage from it. I purchased in August and it’s now December. First couple months I was so excited- you can map your house, set a timer, control by your phone, and the container doesn’t need to be emptied often. 4 months in and it’s leaving dog hair globs all Over my house. Now I have to run it multiple times a day and it maybe picks up 50% of the hair that it did in the beginning. I clean it often, I don’t wait to empty the trap. Super disappointed that I paid so much money for it to not even last me 6 months. I have a black lab that sheds decently FYI.

Quiet and efficient
We have had several random pattern robot vacuums to pick up hair from multiple dogs. When my last Shark stopped working, I decided to upgrade to the AI. Well worth the full price, and great Black Friday sale price. The phone app mapping works very well, as does the unit itself. I find no negative aspect of this vacuum. We have no rugs, so I can’t comment on this aspect.

A winner!
Nothing to dislike yet but I’ve only had it a day. Set up was super easy and after charging, I ran a mapping which turned out to be very accurate first try. I labeled my rooms and ran a living room clean. It stayed within the room. I set a scheduled clean for 10 am today, and right on time it dispatched to start a full bottom floor clean. Came back to the dock to empty once and then resumed until every room was done. It gives a visual report of what was cleaned and how long it took. I inspected the areas where the cat tracks litter, and it got it all as expected. His name is Carson. And I love him ❤️

Doesn’t work well if you have lots of animal hair
I like how it goes on carpet and hardwood floors. If you have pets who shed a lot, I wouldn’t recommend. It has gotten clogged and stuck multiple times because of the hair built up. Overall, I really like it. I’d say it’s worth the money.

Vacuum
Works okay but not great for dog hair and that is why I bought it
Audrey Ramirez –
So quiet & vacuums well
This vacuum is so much more quiet than any other robot vacuum I’ve had in the past. And it does so well. Not sure if it successfully mapped out my house but I read that can be done again if needed. Wish I bought this one sooner
David Wilson –
Does it’s job; eventually
It take 6+ hours to clean because it has to stop and recharge. The battery life is not good enough. My application is about 2,000 square feet- max.

Life changing vacuum!
Vacuums the whole house or one room at a time like a champ! Gets in the corners & picks up very well. Goes right from carpet to floors & over rugs. Absolutely love it!
Sydney Hite –
Works great
Had wanted a robot vac for a long time. Finally got this one & it was easy to set up, map, & use. Does a pretty good job especially between major cleanings. Just open app & start it from anywhere. I have found it sometimes goes back to “home” to recharge & runs again later if I’ve mapped too large an area.

Day 1 and already impressed
The media could not be loaded. Only on day 1 and so far we are super impressed! Easy set up, charging, and mapping. Already noticing a cleaner house – most of which is hardwood and we saw lines on our rug showing the cleaning power. Looking forward to seeing how this performs daily and may invest in a 2nd one for the upstairs.

Shark robot cleaner
Took awhile to set up but it was worth it, love this model. I have two cats and this does a great job on vacuuming their fur

NOT GOOD QUALITY
I BARELY USED IT COZ IT’s NOT HELPING AT ALL. I PURCHASED THIS LAST YEAR. October 2023. NOT YET 2 YEARS BUT IT’s REALLY WASTE OF MONEY. HOW I WISH I COULD RETURN IT 😭😭 KARMA OF BEING LAZY.
Mike Savarese –
Not voice activated- don’t be fooled
I never write reviews, but this seems like a blatant misrepresentation. This is NOT a voice activated device – and the vacuum keeps disconnecting from the internet. Has to be removed and re-added. Total waste of money.
Barbara Corry –
Needs weight on the round vacuumed to press it down until it’s really touching the silver chargers
I like it because it gets a lot of dog hair. I have to check it to see if it’s charged or I need to use the orange weight to put on it so it connects and charges.
German T. –
Love it.

Don’t hesitate to purchase, you won’t regret
I purchased this vacuum almost a year ago. I have never regretted my purchase or had buyers remorse. I wish I got this so much sooner. It’s easy to set up. I love that I can program it to the schedule that I want. I can also start it from my phone. The other thing that’s great about this vacuum is that it empty it’s filter so you’re not a slave to it and it will tell you when to empty the filter. I’ve purchased other robot vacuums and return them because I am so unhappy. This one is a keeper!
Ronald W. Mcelliott Jr. –
Super Noisy
The media could not be loaded. Set up was easy, turned it on and wow, sounded like a KC135 starting up. Mechanical flutter sound, that noise is coming from the bottom roller. You take that roller out and it’s quiet. Bought another one thinking I got a lemon, but same problem. Called their customer support, it was hard to understand them, but they only cared about getting the registration done and not answering my questions. He put me on hold, and after a while I just had to hang up. Returning two vacuums!
Cody K. –
Smart AI Vacuum.
Love the Shark. One thing we did notice is that when it’s needing to map the house the first time, turn on every single light you can and open every single door. It helps with the . We Like the app and I was surprised it gave us vacuum report once finished. We recommend waiting till Black Friday deals to buy. Half the cost.
Carol Lynn –
Love!
Had to map 4 times. My house is confusing I guess. I find it cleans better if I program one room at a time. I love it! Wish I would have purchased a long time ago. It let me know when a sock was stuck. It also let me know when the vacuum was clogged and could not empty. I love that it can dock itself and empty debris. There are no bags to buy. Update The more I use this the more I love it. I live along a main road and have a lot of dust. A quick vacuum every morning! This is much better than sweeping with a broom. There’s no dust particles in the air.

I wasn’t certain… Until I emptied it!!
The media could not be loaded. So this thing does go many places & surprisingly up more than I expected in levels of floor. I have had it cleaning kitchen and living room once a day then a scheduled daily clean of house. I could tell it has been getting 95% of all things, which is apparently better than my own vacuuming… I know the pic is gross, but this thing was full after close to two weeks!! It says 60 day capacity, I’m not mad at all we had to dump it early, just realized I have not been doing so well. We let our 3 dogs stay inside some of the day on beds, they don’t roam and other than that we don’t have a lot of dirt tracking. But this thing went under counters, couch as you see in video, and seems to provide a pretty good suction at the basic level. It’s louder, but if it bothers you maybe run it when not home, it’s not near as loud as our vacuum. I like to be able to schedule certain rooms. Lastly it did suck up part of my leggings then it let me know lol but that’s on me, so it will take a sock and then tell you it has something in it. All in all I think the quality is so far well worth it! I got it on sale, so I’m fairly happy with it, will see in the coming weeks how it continues.
Jennifer H –
Refuses to dock
The media could not be loaded. Not only did it quit docking itself, but it only cleans in circles. It has been fully cleaned, nothing in its way to prevent docking or cleaning. It doesn’t “see” very well and bumps into everything. Idk if we got a bad unit or that Shark is just junk, but we don’t recommend purchasing this model whatsoever.
Cody –
Sale price is perfect
The sale price i got it at $299 was perfect. Don’t think I would of been happy if I paid full price

Can not be used if without being connected to WiFi, Bluetooth and an app.
Could not use the product, would not connect to either my Bluetooth, WiFi or phone. Can not be used without this connectivity. Customer support was Less helpful then this vacuum somehow. But the worst is trying to return this boat anchor to Amazon. I can not schedule the return pickup or drop it somewhere, I have to be home for it sometime in the next 3 days to hand it off to UPS, Amazon won’t even pick it up themselves. Craziness,

Do not waste your money on this product
I had this product since Nov 2022, It worked for 18 months and then give me an error code 6. You can search on the internet about error code 6 of this product. I called the Shark support and I was told that my shark was out of 1 yr warranty. They would send me a replacement with discount price. However the discount price was higher that the sell price in Amazon. I checked all the moving part that can cause the error code 6, all the moving part is working fine. It has to be the mainboard of this shark has some type of defeat. Since it is out of warranty, I have a non-function device at home for more than half year.

Not impressed out of box.
The media could not be loaded. Got this new Shark vacuum today. Charged it up and started cleaning. Noticed immediately that there was an odd noise. It was brand new out of the box so it should work well I was assuming. Trying to figure out next steps or troubleshoot issue. I will update review if customer service or feedback fixes problem.

Very Loud
The media could not be loaded. I have an older model that I loved. That why I got this one. My other one is not this noisy not sure if there is something wrong with it or that is factory intent. But it is loud. I may return because of how loud it is

Started out working great, after a few years not so much
I had purchased this device coming from iRobot. At first this vacuum worked and I had little complaints. I feel maybe it wasn’t as accurate as the iRobot, but it still did the job with no issue. Overtime though it appears it got less efficient and throws errors every time I try to use it. Honestly this has rendered the device useless. I’ve started using my upright Dyson to vacuum myself again. Not sure what changed or if these devices just don’t last long. Personally I’d look elsewhere.
Jessica Casey –
DO NOT PURCHASE!!!
This product worked the first three to four times. Called Shark and they had us do a diagnostic over the phone. They concluded we needed a new battery (after four uses?). We purchased a new battery. After installing the new battery we still do not have a working product. DO NOT PURCHASE!
Ohana –
Very noisy. Previous ones very quiet but this one makes a lot of noise 1st time using it.
The media could not be loaded. Hooked up easily. App easy to follow. Once I started the use of the robot vac itself, it is very noisy. Last shark robot vac was super quiet so I am so disappointed.

Just meh (Purchased June 2024)
Bought this Shark based on reviews & recommendations. Placed this machine in a bedroom w/hardwood floors, also covers 2 bathrooms, laundry & back hallway. When running it’s fairly quiet, but very loud when evacuating. The area it’s responsible to clean is mostly light sand, grass & hair. Winter conditions will change that drastically, we’re just getting started on the season. What’s super disappointing, it does NOT edge clean. There is a solid one inch perimeter that has to be hand cleaned. The Roomba we retired was the best for edge cleaning but had other shortfalls (terrible battery, always stuck & never found its way home). So, hopefully this Shark can withstand the winter traffic. Time will tell.
Mandar –
Amazing
Great suction power. Cleans the floor matting very well. We have a pet and it is cleaning all the hair very well. Easy to handle and program. Wheels are good which helps in transition from floor carpet to wooden floor. Connectivity to WiFi and app is super cool no issues at all.
Mitchell Totty –
Mapping is about 95% accurate. Picks up sand and hair easily.
As advertised, the product works to expectation.

“Trash”
I have to say, I am extremely disappointed with this vacuum. As a loyal Shark customer and a three-time owner of Shark robot vacuums, I had high expectations, but this model has been a letdown on all fronts. At its premium price point, I expected superior performance, but this is by far the loudest, least efficient, and most underwhelming vacuum I’ve owned. Despite its high cost, it delivers subpar cleaning results compared to previous models. It’s so bad that I am seriously considering returning it, but living in a rural area makes that process inconvenient, especially since I’ve already given away my previous vacuum. If you’re considering this model, I highly recommend looking at Shark’s more affordable options. In my experience, they perform significantly better at a fraction of the price. This model has been a major disappointment, and I regret my purchase. I hope this feedback helps others make a more informed decision.

Impressed!
Actually impressed with this little guy. The mapping is awesome, I can’t belive how much dirt it hold. We have 2 cats and it runs 5 days a week and we definitely notice a different. I love how so many parts and filters are easily replaceable. We named him sweepy pete
Colton Gann –
Give it time to learn
The first time it mapped it did a bad job but I took the suggestion of some other comments to turn all the lights on and wait to run it until fully charged and it worked much better. Also, the first few runs it had a hard time with bumping into stuff but on the 5th or 6th run it can clean everything a lot more efficiently and doesn’t really bump into anything. Very good at stopping when my cat runs in front of it. I got it used like new from Amazon for $120 and it is definitely worth that. I probably would never pay the msrp of $600 but that could also just be because I’m broke.
Annie Bananie –
Absolute garbage!
I’m on the phone with customer support for the fourth time waiting for a manager so I can demand my money back. This machine has been nothing but trouble. It wanders aimlessly. It overcleans one spot and skips half the house. When it finally made a map after a couple customer service calls, it ignored the map. When told to clean a certain room it would go to other rooms and not even do a thorough job of the place it went. I’ve waisted too much time trying to get customer service to fix it.
Lauren W –
Doesn’t work
This came, did not work so I sent it back after the seller never replied. Had to speak to Amazon support 4 times since it kept saying return denied. Then they charged a $127 restocking fee. Do not buy from this seller
Mirschbird –
does not work well with long haired dog breeds
I have two shelties and this robo vac would work well with short haired breeds, but not long haired breeds. Lots of tangles shuts down the unit and I have to take it apart to release the binding. A plus is the roller wheel is easy to remove for cleaning. Just a hassle. Too much hair in my house.
Lauren Luetchford –
Love this vacuum
The media could not be loaded. We love this vacuum. We have one upstairs and downstairs in our home for our floors. I love that. Ours is a 60 day capacity so we do not have to worry about cleaning out the dust canister every single day. And so conveniently sucks all of the delivery into a canister when it is done which easily removed and dump into trashcan. It has a coordinating app where you can schedule Times where it’s a clean as well as no go areas or if you want it to be clean just ones specific room, etc..
Don, Virginia –
Great Cleaner but No-Go Zone Feature Does Not Work
We have had the The AV251WAXUS robot vacuum for 4 months. The robot does a great job of cleaning! We have a Labrador retriever that sheds constantly and would be a challenge for any robot vacuum. The extent of the shedding fills the “60-day” capacity self-empty base with hair after 2 vacuuming rounds! This isn’t a big deal as we just empty the base every 2 days and appreciate not having to manually vacuum the room each day. We have only had one difficulty and that is the No-Go zones. You can program No-Go zones with the Sharp app. It does not work no matter how many times I have tried to redo the map. That was a disappointment. We have an end table with a 1” solid wood base that the robot tries to climb over every time wasting time and battery charge. I’ve had to place a 2” by 2” in front of the table base (see photo) prior to each vacuuming which is annoying. This feature should work and it is very hard to get help from Sharp. Were it not for this problem I would have given the robot a 5-star rating.
Charlotte McClanahan –
Lost Internet Connection
When I first got it, it linked seamlessly with the internet. I loved the way that it cleaned! Then I had a power outage and the internet connection was lost. I spent hours on my knees trying to reestablish the connection. I tried all the suggestions on the Shark website, I googled it and tried their suggestions without success. I finally called customer service, only to be told the problem was on their end and they would email me when it was resolved. It’s been several weeks and nothing yet
Ellis Conoley –
So far a terrible ptoduct
There is no instruction book. The map setup misses door openings as well as the 20 foot opening between kitchen and living room. This far I have not found online nor by fiddling with remapping ANY INSTRUCTION S how do make the shark clean more than 122 sq feet. Currently its a failure of a product.

Waste of money – do not buy if you have lots of pet hair
I bought this to replace a cheap robovac that finally died. Loved the upgrade on this one that it self emptied. Well what a complete waste of money! Pet hair clogs it up pretty quickly. It actually deposits tufts of per hair on edges of rugs etc. they are actually worse after vacuuming. It’s supposed to not have to be cleaned or emptied for a month, but I have to clean it every time it runs. It does a decent job on just dirt on hard floors, but seems to do next to nothing on my rugs, and like I said, actually leaves rugs dirtier. I wish I could return it or sell it. The only reason I haven’t just tossed it in the trash is because it was so expensive. Don’t waste your money if you have shedding pets!!

Waste of time
I was so excited to finally get one of these, but that was short lived. The app is a joke and doesn’t work well. Vaccum will not matrix clean any room on the first attempt. When I send the vacuum out it turns around quickly and goes back to the dock. On the off chance the vacuum makes it off the dock ther is a high probability it wont make it back. Unfortunately I’m out of the return period otherwise this piece of crap would be going back instead of going in the trash. $300 in the trash can.
