What’s Good, Bad, and Ugly About the Self-Empty Robot Vacuum? An In-Depth Review
One user, Casey Johnson, was extremely satisfied with the Shark RV1001AE IQ Robot Self-Empty XL’s performance in a home with hardwood floors and pets, stating that it’s a “game changer” and “She definitely needs dumped every few days being that we have four dogs that shed. But she has no problem cleaning up all the dog hair twice a day for us. We absolutely love her.”
Another user, Stacey, emphasized the vacuum’s efficiency and convenience, expressing that it “keeps my first floor spotless, running it once or twice a day,” and plans to buy another for the second floor. The ease of setup was also a highlight, with Stacey noting, “It was a breeze to set up. Highly recommend.”
Desertrosebud, a senior citizen, praised the ease of use and the self-emptying feature, saying “Rosie works great and does a thorough job of cleaning my house… Rosie goes back to the base when needed to empty the debris into the bagless base container, then goes right back out to finish the job.”
On the downside, Vonnie mentioned that the vacuum “doesn’t pick up the dirt very well and doesn’t reach all the main spots,” requiring a second run with a traditional vacuum, which was disappointing given the price.
Yaroslav Nikolenko expressed frustration with the robot’s functionality, stating it “doesn’t clean enough properly,” and faced issues with it “sometimes turns on nighttime very loud.” The connectivity issues also made it difficult to use, as it “sometimes disconnected from application and can’t be used.”
The stars speak of…
Opinions about this product were divided in such a proportion among the buyers.
This robot is working great for our family home so far. It has mapped the main floor perfectly. Each day it runs it gets better and better at getting every inch of the room area. We have used it for 1 week daily and each day I am surprised on how much pet hair and dust it picks up. I would recommend this product for this price range. Worth the money.
Not the worst but definitely not the best, doesn’t pick up the dirt very well and doesn’t reach all the main spots I got it for. I have to go over again with my own vacuum and that defeats the purpose especially for the price of it. Overall I’m not too thrilled with it if I’m being honest

First Robo Vacuum
I was pleasantly surprised with the performance of this vacuum. The app is easy to use. The only negative is this beast doesn’t have legs to go upstairs. Very happy with my purchase.
Lindy Keers –
We love it!
At first the mapping didn’t look right, but it needs to map a few times to learn the space. Then my husband set up the rooms. We added a nightly schedule and it is keeping up with the Beagle hair! We don’t use the mop, not for LVP flooring.

Learned the house in one pass
This is a replacement for a cheap model Roomba. I got tired of supervising it while it crashed into things, ate cables, got stuck on lamp bases and the like. The Shark is great – it pushes the boundaries around movable things like chairs and tables, but navigates around doorframes, walls, bookcases and other more permanent obstacles without touching them. It mapped the house in its initial exploration, and produced a very good approximation. It updates its initial map with each “mission”. Once, the self-emptying dust bin got clogged while trying to empty – ate something that disagreed with it, I guess. But it did call for help. It makes multiple trips to clean and empty its dustbin, and finds its way back to home base effortlessly. I’m sure my enthusiasm is due to the comparison with the old “stupid” Roomba, but I’m quite pleased with it in any case.

Shark products are the worse!
We purchased the Shark IQ robot about 2 years ago cost about $500. Then all of a sudden it stopped working on and off. Tried calling costumer service which was no help whatsoever and the best they could offer me was a discount to buy a new one. We had the robot repaired by an outside company. The company had to replace the main control board which was only 60$ to repair. It is a disgrace that Shark does not have any type of repair company that could fix something so simple. I WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANYTHING MADE BY SHARK EVER AGAIN.

Waste of money
I purchased in July 2023, it was dead by August and wouldn’t hold a charge. I called in a warranty issue and was sent a new unit in September, and by April 2024 it was constantly giving errors and need g to be restarted, then by May was only holding enough charge to go 2 feet from the base before dying. Even though I’m still in the warranty period Shark is refusing assistance and is just offering to sell me a new battery or unit at a slight discount. I’m so disgusted with this purchase.

Placement of Docking/Charging Station
I had to return this Shark vacuum without ever using it. I opened the box and read the instructions, which said to place the docking/charging station on a hard surface. I have both hardwood floors and carpeted floors, but the best place for my docking station would be in a carpeted room. I called the Customer Service number in the instruction booklet and told him my situation. He said if it is on carpet the robot may not be able to dock properly and therefore would not charge properly. How I wish this had been clear in the online description before I bought it! My brother has this same vacuum and absolutely loves it. His docking station is on a hard surface so he didn’t have my issue. Hopefully this will help someone else when considering this purchase.

Need to manually clean dust bin after each use
I chose this vacuum because it has storage which I thought meant I wouldn’t have to manually empty it out after each use. Unfortunately the vacuum gets clogged after each use. It also struggles to pick up hair and gets overwhelmed by dust.

Not for heavy shedding dogs
We have two dogs and one of them is a german shepherd/saint bernard mix and this vacuum cannot handle his fur. All of the fur gets clumped around the metal prongs so it constantly needs to be cleaned, it has a hard time sucking up the fur so it just spits it out in clumps even after emptying. We’ve had it for a little over 6 months now and the performance just keeps getting worse day by day. It gets stuck all the time and sometimes doesn’t even notify you. The app doesn’t give you the option to run it more than once a day. It’s also running into things all of the time and continues to run into the same thing over and over again like it’s fixated on that one spot. Spits the fur out all over the rugs and floor matts. (I miss our Neato – wish the company didn’t go out of business, it was the only vacuum that could handle the fur)

False advertisement
The media could not be loaded. I had never had troubles with Amazon until now. I bought this robot vacuum with the false advertisement stating that it mobs and vacuum . Which I found out I didn’t mop when I called the help desk for shark. Amazon made it look like this vacuum was on offer clearly stated that the retail prize was around 500 And it was 50% off. Shark has great customer service And great products. However, Amazon really disappointed me I will be returning this product and also canceling my Amazon prime

5G
Can’t use the app if you have a 5G network!! So, I cannot use it or voice. No wonder it’s for sale. They should tell you why it’s so cheap. Not cool. It vacuums well but come on.
DM –
great product but App does not work outside the US
I only turned it on but I returned it because the app does not work in Argentina.
Paul K. Fowler –
Awesome!!
This robot is great and it does a good job. The virtual no go zones are a must and this has it. The app yes as others have stated is dated but it works well.
40SomethingVet –
Works great, kinda loud.
Is very thorough, cleans well and empty itself. You’ll be surprised how much it picks up. It has two chambers, intake & vacuum … so empty both. Got on sale on Amazon Days $200 off. Great buy!!

Robot will not connect to Alexa
This is 2nd robot, 1st one had Alexa connection issues, took 3 days for Shark tech/eng’s to “fix” with a new s/w update. But they fixed it. Turns out 1st robot was built in 2015, purchased Dec2023. It has been a loyal companion. This 2nd robot is not connecting like the first one did, Shark support is not very motivated to assist this time. Both robots work great with Shark Clean App. Shark tech also said Alexa App was the problem. Wait, 1st robot has already been working with Alexa Skill.

Rubber bumper piece already coming off
We received this shark June 29, and have used it a handful of times. It’s now 7/10 & i noticed while it was running part of the rubber bumper piece had came off. Kind of annoying paying what i paid For this & not even 2 weeks into having it it’s already falling apart.

Have a Wolf and Great Pyrones – this purchase makes me happy!
We had one of the earlier generations of the Roomba, the one that bounced off things and roamed aimlessly around the house. The old model seemed to want to seek me out, no matter which room I went to, it would soon be slamming into my feet. I finally pulled the trigger and bought this one and I’m very impressed. It maps the house, goes about its business on it’s scheduled time. It’s much quieter than our last one too. The only thing I would change is to allow the app to schedule more than once a day. I bypass this issue by manually turning it on in the app at 5am, then it cleans again at 4pm on schedule….and it doesn’t crash into my feet all the time…but it did grab our puppies tail and got her fur caught in the scrubber…that was exciting. 🙂

If it needs warranty, you’ll get a substandard replacement
“Larry” worked great for 6 months. Then one day randomly reported an obstruction. One of the side brushes was rotating slower than the other. After talking to tech support, they started a replacement of just the robot. After 2 weeks, we contacted then and they “determined” that they didn’t have this model anymore and that we would now get a complete replacement (base and robot.) The replacement is a newer model with only 1 side brush, that does not extend beyond the side of the robot. Additionally, it is horribly loud. After searching the interwebs, various “fixes” such as random bits of tape were tried and we gave up. The replacement – sucks. Except not in the preferred manner. Suction on this unit is less than the previous. It struggles to suck up tiny pieces of litter.

Not mapping… Shark demanded $49.99 firmware update to make it work
I purchased this item from Amazon today and was so excited to receive it on the same day! Following the instructions, I set up everything according to the instructions. Unfortunately, the robot and the app could not achieve mapping of my home after several attempts. I was directed to the Shark representative for a resolution, who said I would have to pay $49.99 for a firmware update in order to make the vacuum work properly. I notified Amazon, who ignored my concern, and said to return the product if I didn’t want to pay the money. So I did, but was sadly astounded that Amazon sold a faulty product and expected me to pay additional money to fix it.

Missing parts
It was delivered today. But the box was missing the side brushes and filter. Worst part is.. there is no way to communicate and get it. Ironically its rather easier to return the product. Thinking to do so.

Love it!
Bought this product in 2019 and it is still works great! Would definitely buy it again.
Kris rakes –
Amazing value/ Amazing results
I was getting tired of having to vacuum my German Shepherds shedding hair almost every day. I purchased this robot vacuum on a whim and have been very pleased with its results. It has three different suction power levels for the depth of cleaning you need. It has full mapping which helps it navigate without any problems. For anybody with pets that shed, I can say that so far I haven’t had any issues with the robot and fur.

Love it!!!
I’ve had it a full week. Affectionately named her Lola!!! I usually vacuum daily with two cats and two dogs. So she’s got her work cut out for her. This makes my life a lot easier and we off to a good start. I am excited to see how she handles the next 60 days with the dust tower dump.

Great vacuum
It cleaned very good was impressed

Worked well…. for a couple months
I loved this vaccum when we first got it last year but unfortunately it randomly stopped running. I tried all support videos to clean it and fix it but nothing works. I reset it and still not working, it says it’s ready to clean but just stands still and goes nowhere. Total waste of my money.

“Something went wrong. Try again later!”
If you don’t mind that incessant response as you continually try to set up the app on your phone, then this product is for YOU! If you were also persuaded to buy a shark against your better judgment, hold your ground! Do not give in! Pay attention to the negative reviews and don’t think it can’t happen to you. Even if you can find your no longer used laptop to set up an account other than on your phone, you’re wasting your time.

Great
It does a great job cleaning my house. The only problem I have with it is that no matter how many times I set it to program my house it never looks right. So I’m unable to figure out rooms or able to block some areas.
Amazon Customer –
Already love it!
Decided to get this to help cleaning up the dog hair around the house. The photo I’ve attached is what our shark picked up AFTER I had just swept. It’s super quiet and user-friendly. It lets you sweep specific rooms, specific zones in rooms, or the entire house. It has no issue transitioning from our hardwood floors to our carpet. It also leaves sweeper tracks on the carpet where it’s swept. I have a feeling this will be a huge help!

Easy setup, good auto vacuum for pet owners
I have 8 dogs and 4 cats in my house and this vacuum did the entire house without the dumping station getting full. Good suction, better than other robot vacuums I’ve tried at getting over high floor transitions
Cwlee –
Awesome
I have a reg push shark vacuum and like the brand a lot. this shark robot is amazing. It picks up much more than I thought it would so easy to use and set up. It does not get tangled with the longer hair and great in our 2 pet home

Couldn’t pair even at 2.4 bandwidth- returned
Couldn’t pair with app, horrible customer service with shark. Returned.

Better then the Rumba!
Great purchase! Picks up EVERYTHING… in every corner the app is easy to manage.

Well worth the money
We had a shark vacuum some years prior that was extremely frustrating. It would constantly get stuck, and had no clear pattern. The company has certainly made some great upgrades. The vacuum mapped our house accurately, really never gets struck, and is shockingly effective. With two dogs and two kids, it finds plenty of hair, dust, dirt and debris to pick up. Very impressed with how well it cleans. Love being able to pick a specific room or area to clean. My previous robot vacuum almost made me turn my back on these, but I’m glad I gave them another chance with this model.
Human 36 –
No mop
I bought this item as opposed to others in part because it describes it in the video as having sonic mopping but after purchase it is clear that it does not have that feature. In addition hair became wrapped around their “anti tangle fins” after the first run. Overall sub par product
Doc –
It cleans better than our previous Shark. It picks up dog hair and lots of dirt!
I am very pleased with this item. It picks up lots of everyday trash including dog hair!

Great when it is great, still not 100% perfect!
I love the app feature, and the overall general performance of this robot! I will say, i have two doggos and they shed A LOT. Their hair does sometimes get wrapped up on the brush, but it was easily be cleared away. ALSO… i know we all dread this thought, but my robot “brucey” has gone through poop twice! first time wasn’t nearly as bad as the most recent. I WISH i took pictures lmao, the thing smeared poo ALLLLLL over my living room rug that is light grey and white. took quite some scrubbing, but i cleaned it up. I have yet to clean bruce, as he himself is quite a challenge to clean😫😭😭

Works Great!
I’ve owned several robot vacuums and all end up meeting their fate with an out of place item in runs over, or just poor cleaning overall. The vacuum here is the most powerful of the robotic vacs I’ve had, yes the software is slightly clunky but just needs a little fine tuning. The bin is easy to empty, it always makes its way back to the charger and actually it’s in white versus all others in black. This is gentle when vacuuming edges versus my older ones cracking into edges or furniture. Definitely recommend especially at 50% off! Has done great with pet hair FYI.

Be ready to babysit
I gave this product a second chance after trying a stimulus model 5 years ago and although this isn’t a perfect design (I get it) we clear everything off the floor and it still somehow gets trapped under my sons bed which we tell it not to do every single time, somehow finds things (a freaking yoyo!?) And constantly just randomly dies. I really wanted this product to work but it’s more of a headache and nuisance than anything.
Cari B –
Efficient and powerful
Excellent coverage and good value. Very pleased with this so far! The map is super accurate and I can start it from work or in the car on the way home! App is super easy to use

Battery has died three times three years
I paid a lot of money and it doesn’t work very well. It doesn’t pick up a lot ! I have to vacuum with my stick vac too. It worked well the first year now it sucks and yesterday just quit. I have purchased new batteries at around fifty dollars twice now it needs a new one no thank you
F4Flyer –
The Best Brand for the Price
I’ve had the iRobot as well as this one. The Shark beats the iRobot hands down with better features, quieter, and a better job cleaning at much less cost. I haven’t had any issues and I have 3 of them for a very large house.

Waste of Money
I’ve been so disappointed in this vacuum. I’ve had it just over a year now and it no longer works. When it turns on, I get an error message that the side brushes are jammed. I purchased and replaced the brushes, but they still don’t spin. When it was working, it took hours to vacuum my small ranch home, even w/two rooms closed off. It bumps into furniture and has damaged furniture and the wood trim in my home. Honestly, I’m halfway glad it stopped working so I don’t have to deal with it anymore. It would run for a while, then return to the dock to recharge, I would think it’d be done, then during lunch or dinner when I had guests, here it’d come again after what seemed like hours of being on the dock! Also, I’d have to take up several rugs each time I run it because it’d get the side brushes tangled in them or sucked up inside the machine. The harsh bumping of the furniture and wood trim around my home was my biggest issue. I put new brushes on it and it just keeps stopping after a few seconds, saying the brushes are stuck, but there is nothing sticking in them, they just won’t turn. Now I need to get eveythibg repaired and painted and look for a new one. Save your money and look at another brand. I’ve had a couple of roombas that were okay, but I keep thinking surely there’s something better available. Fingers crossed!

Worth Every Penny!
I purchased this vacuum after my son and two large (shedding) dogs moved in with me. I had mentioned all the dog hair to a friend and she suggested I look at a robot vacuum. I currently own a Shark upright vacuum and have been very happy with it so after reading reviews I felt good about this choice. It arrived quickly and was easy to set up. I like that it links to an app on my phone. I have been running it M-W-F and using my upright on the weekend. I am extremely impressed with the amount of hair/dust it picks up. I have both carpet and linoleum in my home and it does a great job with both. The only downside I have identified is the battery has a somewhat short life. I have 3 bedrooms, two bathrooms and an open living room/kitchen and it takes a little over an hour and a half to complete. It does need to recharge before getting through all the rooms. Not a big deal to me, it resumes once the battery has been charged. So far, it’s great and I wish I’d purchased it sooner.

Nothing but problems. Get a Roomba instead.
I’ve had this Shark for about a year. It never had operated like stated. This is my second one because the first one I had just stopped working. They did send me a replacement which is the one I’m reviewing. I have a German Shepard and it never cleans up the hair on the rug or in the area cleaned (around 500 sq ft). Even on the heavy duty setting. It regularly has hair jammed in it that I have to clear. It does vacuum but regularly doesn’t complete the job. It will vacuum the kitchen well but when it gets to the living room it only does part of it. It then will go back to randomly vacuum other areas it had already done but won’t vacuum new spots. I’ve reset/ remapped multiple times. It will also go into one no-go area I set up and gets stuck. The worst of it is that my old dog had a big poop accident overnight. The Shark ran right into it, turned around and around it in, then spread poop over part of house. It finally got stuck on the carpet when I found it. I thought this one would avoid that but poop is all over it. I had an older Roomba and I started using that without any issues. It doesn’t self dump but I will deal with it. It very rarely gets stuck and will vacuum the whole area. Using the older Roomba versus the new Shark is night and day between performance. It’s worth the money for the Roobma.

Vacuum returns to docking station at 40% for no reason.
I wish I knew why this thing works so badly. I started it at 100%, within 45 minutes it was down to 40%, then it returned to docking station. It unloaded its material which was hardly anything. Then it returned to the room it had just left. WHY did it go back to the dock at all? It goes over spots more then once. It does not vacuum the rooms efficiently. It wastes time going around objects and then incorrectly continuing on its path. It incorrectly scanned a room and doesn’t vacuum it properly. I will have it reexplore the house and if it doesnt work better its going back. Also after it scanned the house you are unable to select a room to its exact dimensions, you can only select a square and hover over the section you want cleaned which usually means your cleaning parts of the another room????

It does not do mopping
I currently bought this product thinking it did mopping and vacuuming as it said in the video of the product. When it arrived I decided tu set it up and to my surprise it only vacuumed. Not what I expected

Good value
Third vacuum of this type. I rated it better than Roomba. Also good price.
