Self-cleaning brushroll of Shark AI Ultra Robot Vacuum effectively removing hair and dirt from carpets and hardwood floors

What’s Good, Bad, and Ugly About the Robot Vacuum? An In-Depth Review

The Shark robot vacuum has garnered positive remarks from users who value its time-saving capabilities and its proficiency in cleaning both carpets and hard floors. As one user joyfully stated, “Saves us 112hrs a year! That’s roughly 20 min a day. The orange is worth the squeeze.” This sentiment is echoed by others who highlight the vacuum’s impressive mapping technology, which allows users to instruct the device to clean specific rooms via their phone. The convenience offered by the vacuum’s self-emptying feature is frequently praised, as it can handle pet hair effectively, with one user affirming, “This vacuum is awesome. We have two Spaniels and the wife has extremely curly red hair. This vacuum does its job and then some.”

In terms of reliability, there are reports of the Shark vacuum performing exceptionally for several months without any significant issues. Its scheduling functionality, when operating correctly, enables users to automate their cleaning routines, providing a seamless and hands-off experience. The machine’s performance is considered comparable to higher-priced alternatives, as one user acknowledges, “does the hard floors right and as good as the ones that cost twice as much.”

Despite its advantages, the Shark robot vacuum also faces considerable criticism. A recurring theme in the negative reviews is the vacuum’s longevity, with multiple users experiencing breakdowns within a year. One user expressed frustration, stating, “Only Lasted 8 Months,” while another added, “Broke in a Couple of Months.” Technical issues such as error messages regarding the IR disc and wheel malfunctions have been reported, leading to dissatisfaction with the device’s durability and quality assurance.

The accompanying app has been a source of discontent, with users citing a lack of basic functionality like matrix cleaning and random activation at odd hours despite scheduled times and “do not disturb” settings. Customer service responses have been found wanting, with suggestions like factory resets failing to resolve the issues permanently.

The product’s handling of pet hair has also been critiqued. One user found the model not suitable for pet hair, experiencing frequent clogging, and feeling that the money spent was wasted. Additionally, the machine’s inability to clean without supervision has led to increased user intervention, negating the purpose of an autonomous vacuum. The sentiment is summed up by a user’s comment, “Refuses to clean the room I send it to,” indicating problems with the vacuum’s smart features.

Connectivity and mapping issues plague some units, with the vacuum either cleaning the same area repeatedly or struggling to navigate around the home effectively. This has been compounded by the apparent lack of firmware updates or responsive technical support to address such glitches. As one user lamented, “It’s a brick because the app can’t connect,” highlighting the frustration felt when the device fails to meet expectations.

The most helpful positive feedback Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2024 by lme, and is titled “great for the price”
This robot is working great for our family home so far. It has mapped the main floor perfectly. Each day it runs it gets better and better at getting every inch of the room area. We have used it for 1 week daily and each day I am surprised on how much pet hair and dust it picks up. I would recommend this product for this price range. Worth the money.

Disappointed. Got this to replace my iRobot Roomba. My Roomba picked up all the dog hair feom my carpet. This Shark just goes over the top of it and leaves the hair. This may be fire for houses with no carpet, but it sure isn’t as good as the iRobot. Looks like this will be going back.

    Deficient Base and Sensor Issues

Must’ve received one with a bad base—robot never took a charge. Tried charging on my other Shark Base and it took a charge. Fair to say I received a deficient base. For the few times I did run it, it kept saying that it was at an edge when it wasn’t. It kept getting stuck in one place on a low area rug. I couldn’t figure out why it didn’t like that one corner or the area rug. It had no issues with the rest of the area rug. Seasons must’ve been malfunctioning as well. Ultimately, returned the product.

Brushes get stuck and fall off

I got this shark about three days ago and this is the first time I use it after the home scan and I will say I’m disappointed, there are no extra brushes for me to replace them and I’m sure it’s going to be expensive. I will be returning this item. I haven’t even had the chance to do the whole house this happened with just 10 minutes of use. I was so excited, I got this item for my self as a Christmas Gift and I’m so disappointed. This makes me wonder about Durability.

    AN OUTSTANDING VACUUM

I did my research before I bought two identical Shark robots, one for downstairs and one for upstairs. After they each vacuumed 2,000 sq ft twice, my dingy Berber carpet looks new again. After the first cleaning I emptied a softball-sized wad of dog hair from each robot. After the second cleaning there was a golfball- sized hair wad. I have not had dogs for 3 years, so my upright vacuum did a very poor job picking up hair. I can’t speak to reliability because I’ve had the AV2501 AE AI for less than a month, but the Shark brand has a good reputation.

    So Far So Very Good

Ive only had “Jeeves” for a month but so far i love it . I have two cats who shed a lot , I also have a mixture of Carpet and hard floor. The App is very easy to use and configure , Jeeves is used everyday. He is very quiet on carpet and a lil louder on hard floor but not exceptionally. The loudest part is when he evacuates his dustbin bucket into the home bin. Cleans really well and only has been stuck once . Which notifies me on the phone

Loud and not really meant for pet homes

The vacuum is way louder than I had expected from Shark. It also has been in use twice and already the brush roll is stuck and I was asked to remove the hair. I thought it would be heavier duty than this. Super bummed that it’s not close to what I expected.

    Unfortunately doesn’t last

I waited to do my review to ensure I got some usage from it. I purchased in August and it’s now December. First couple months I was so excited- you can map your house, set a timer, control by your phone, and the container doesn’t need to be emptied often. 4 months in and it’s leaving dog hair globs all Over my house. Now I have to run it multiple times a day and it maybe picks up 50% of the hair that it did in the beginning. I clean it often, I don’t wait to empty the trap. Super disappointed that I paid so much money for it to not even last me 6 months. I have a black lab that sheds decently FYI.

    Quiet and efficient

We have had several random pattern robot vacuums to pick up hair from multiple dogs. When my last Shark stopped working, I decided to upgrade to the AI. Well worth the full price, and great Black Friday sale price. The phone app mapping works very well, as does the unit itself. I find no negative aspect of this vacuum. We have no rugs, so I can’t comment on this aspect.

    A winner!

Nothing to dislike yet but I’ve only had it a day. Set up was super easy and after charging, I ran a mapping which turned out to be very accurate first try. I labeled my rooms and ran a living room clean. It stayed within the room. I set a scheduled clean for 10 am today, and right on time it dispatched to start a full bottom floor clean. Came back to the dock to empty once and then resumed until every room was done. It gives a visual report of what was cleaned and how long it took. I inspected the areas where the cat tracks litter, and it got it all as expected. His name is Carson. And I love him ❤️

Doesn’t work well if you have lots of animal hair

I like how it goes on carpet and hardwood floors. If you have pets who shed a lot, I wouldn’t recommend. It has gotten clogged and stuck multiple times because of the hair built up. Overall, I really like it. I’d say it’s worth the money.

Overall very happy with this product.

My Usage and Overall Comments: ============================== Have had the Bot for 2-3 weeks now. Mostly used on 2nd floor (bedrooms/bathrooms/Loft area) which is 90% carpet. I mapped this floor only. Occasionally used on 1st floor, which is about 50% carpet. (Not mapped). Overall it seems to do a pretty good job, keeping in mind these Bot Vacs are not meant for DEEP cleaning carpets. Much quieter than my old Neato Botvac80! Cleans my 2nd floor on a single charge with BOOST cleaning, and recharging takes about 3 hours. Overall I feel it’s a good Robot Vac, but wouldn’t spend more than $300 for it. Floor Mapping Review: ============================== – My 2nd floor is about 1,000sq ft and it takes about 10-12 mins to map it. – It’s not the greatest at mapping. It will sometimes take 2-3 “Explore” runs for it to get it right because it occasionally misses entire wall sections. – Adding/Changing/Removing Room Labels and No-Go Zones on the app is pretty easy. If you’re older, it’s easier to do it on a Tablet vs the phone. – I noticed that once it completes the entire cleaning run on the 2nd floor, it seems like it internally compares the results with the full map(??), and if it detects area’s that it missed it will go back to them to clean them. When it does do that, it doesn’t always clean them in the most efficient order, often running from one end of the house to the other to address these areas. I have also seen this behavior when tasked with cleaning a specific room. It’s will sometimes bounce around in the room getting the spots it feels it missed. – There have been times where I’ve seen it do several clockwise/counter-clockwise spins in the same spot as if it’s trying to decide where to go next. Sometimes these crazy spins can last 30-40 seconds. – So far no problems with it finding the Base Unit and Docking with it. – Mapping is only required if you need to specify No-Go Zones or want the ability to vac a specific room(s) so you CAN do like in my case, map the most commonly vacuumed floor (ie: 2nd floor) then manually initiate a cleaning for the 1st floor. (see more about mapping in my “CONS” section). Detailed Review: ============================== PROS: – It’s fairly quiet. You can actually have a conversation standing next to it as it’s cleaning. – Their SHARK CLEAN app is easy to use. Again, if you are older using it on a Tablet (larger screen0 will be a better experience. – The self-vacuuming / evacuation unit works well, typically removing 95% of the bot vac’s contents. – So far have not had any issues with it getting stuck in a corner, going over room thresholds/transitions, etc. – Bump avoidance it pretty good as long as objects are high enough for the Lidar Sensor to see it. – No issues transitioning between carpet and hardwood/tile surfaces. – Although it may not take the most efficient paths on occasion, and sometimes re-cleans a section(s) 2-3 times during it’s total run, it does appear to do a very through clean, cleaning all the places that it possibly can reach. – It does well respecting No-Go Zones. – Ledge detection works well also, but the fall-off is only detected after about 25% of the bot is hanging over the edge – depending on it’s speed. It can be nerve wracking to watch near stairs!! – The Evacuate and Resume feature is nice to have. (After every 30 mins of cleaning, it will return to the Dock to empty its dust bin then return to clean where it left off. – The Do Not Disturb Schedule works well. – The No-Go Zones work well. – Although I have not had a need for it as of yet, I’m confident the Recharge and Resume feature will work fine. FYI: – Initial WiFi Setup: I did have an issue trying to pair the Bot with my phone. I think after I rebooted my phone it finally worked. – Annoying – if you remove the Bot’s dust bin while it’s ON, it will complain stating it’s dust bin needs to be replaced. – The foam roll filter in the Docking station gets VERY dirty real fast and needs to be cleaned every 2-3 runs. It’s easy to clean, just tap over a garbage can to get the bulk off, then slide off the foam roll from it’s base and rinse in a sink. Let dry completely before returning to docking station. – The Evacuation system will engage EVERY TIME you return the Bot to the dock. So if you pull the Bot off just to check the roller, as soon as you re-dock it, the evacuation system will turn on. – The Evacuation system is as loud as a typical upright vacuum, so keep that in mind when deciding on a location for it!!! – I have not tried the SCHEDULED Cleaning at all. I personally prefer to manually initiate when/where I want it to clean. CONS: – I was not able to Register the Bot via the app – kept saying “Something went wrong”. Had to do it online. – The app could use some improvements/updating, like showing the current location of the BOT and what it’s cleaned so far as it’s running, estimated time of completion, etc. – Deleting your map when you want to do a “Re-explore” (ie: Re-Map) can take a minute or two to complete. – “Matrix” cleaning can only be performed on one room at a time. So if you have 3 kids bedrooms you want to Matrix clean you have to select one, do the cleaning, then send it out again to do the Matrix cleaning on the 2nd bedroom, etc. You might be able to work around this by setting up 3 Scheduled cleanings(??), one for each room. – The Mapping system could be MUCH better. I can understand it not mapping a shoe on the floor, but missing an entire 10-FOOT WALL SECTION??? Would be nice to have Multi-Floor/Level mapping also. – I’ve run into an occasional issue where after doing a manual cleaning (via press of the CLEAN button) on the 1st floor (not mapped), then using the app to vac a specific room on the 2nd floor (mapped), it will clean the room, but then starts re-cleaning the last 3-foot section over-and-over until I manually stop it. Others also have reported odd issues jumping between “Mapped” cleaning and “non-Mapped” cleaning areas. The fix for me was to delete my map and have the bot do a re-explore to build it again (and hope it does it correctly on the 1st pass). If this issue continues, I’m toying with the idea of not doing any mapping at all and just letting the Bot figure it out as it goes regardless of the floor it’s on. I’ll loose the No-Go Zones and Specific Room Clean functions and it will likely take longer to run, but it might be worth it until the Mapping Logic is improved. CUSTOMER SUPPORT: ============================== I did reach out to them when I had the “re-cleaning the same 3-foot section” issue after bouncing between a Mapped and Un-Mapped floor. This was during Black Friday weekend, and I only waited 5-10 minutes to speak with someone. They were OK, some easier to understand than others. I was eventually connected with one of their Technical Support staff and had to re-explain the issue. He asked if I could run the cleaning session again (I was fine with that) and he wanted to video record the Bot in action, so he sent me a link for the video connection. I was unable to get that working (Android phone issue??). He asked me to re-explain the issue to him again, and we got into a brief disagreement about how the MATRIX CLEAN function worked – he claimed that was only for “Spot cleaning”, which I told him was NOT true. He finally suggested I delete my floor map and re-run another mapping session then try to replicate the problem again. I was assigned a Ticket# to reference when I called them back with my findings. After re-doing the mapping, I haven’t been able to replicate the problem yet, and I’m leaning towards assuming the Bot works best with Mapped areas only, and jumping between Mapped/Non-Mapped floors is not 100% supported (???)

    Better than I tjiught

I’ve waited to write a review because I wasn’t sure I would like it. I do like it. I would say the cons are, it is hard to program the no zone spaces. It still wants to go to those places and it’s pretty annoying so I don’t trust leaving and it running without me home. The customer service is really good though. It does take a long time to run and is a little loud. I feel it picks up a lot of dust and dog hair. I would for sure purchase it again. I don’t run it a lot but it’s a great backup.

Not voice activated- don’t be fooled

I never write reviews, but this seems like a blatant misrepresentation. This is NOT a voice activated device – and the vacuum keeps disconnecting from the internet. Has to be removed and re-added. Total waste of money.

Don’t hesitate to purchase, you won’t regret

I purchased this vacuum almost a year ago. I have never regretted my purchase or had buyers remorse. I wish I got this so much sooner. It’s easy to set up. I love that I can program it to the schedule that I want. I can also start it from my phone. The other thing that’s great about this vacuum is that it empty it’s filter so you’re not a slave to it and it will tell you when to empty the filter. I’ve purchased other robot vacuums and return them because I am so unhappy. This one is a keeper!

    Works perfectly.

Right out of the box set up was simple, and after the robot charged, it did a tour of the house. The map was accurate and pretty detailed. The app is easy to use and guides the user through setting up zones and schedules for cleaning. The robot itself isn’t overly loud, but the vacuum when emptying the bot is. However, the cup empties completely. If the bot’s dirt cup fills while cleaning, it returns to the base, empties, and picked up exactly where it left off. Same if it runs low on charge. It does take 3-4 hours to recharge, but it returns to where it left off and finishes. I also did a matrix clean in our bedroom to get all the dust and dirt from under the bed, and it did just that room flawlessly. No issues with our multiple area rugs or going from bare floors over thresholds into carpeted rooms. It has done three whole house cleanings, and one matrix clean with no issues and plenty of suction to pick up small debris, dust, and dog hair. (We have a long hair shepherd/chow mix. Hair is everywhere all the time.) I have not yet cleaned the wheels or beater bar but plan to once a week. I purchased replacement filters, and brushes upfront to prevent downtime. I can’t yet speak to the durability because we’ve only had it a few days, but it doesn’t smack into things to find them, the sensors seem to be working as advertised. We own multiple Shark products (and Ninja). All have performed as expected This robot vacuum is no different. Great value for the money.

Doesn’t even pick everything up off the floor. There are small pieces of food or dirt on the floor and it just flings it, instead of sucking it up.

    Super Noisy

The media could not be loaded. Set up was easy, turned it on and wow, sounded like a KC135 starting up. Mechanical flutter sound, that noise is coming from the bottom roller. You take that roller out and it’s quiet. Bought another one thinking I got a lemon, but same problem. Called their customer support, it was hard to understand them, but they only cared about getting the registration done and not answering my questions. He put me on hold, and after a while I just had to hang up. Returning two vacuums!

    I wasn’t certain… Until I emptied it!!

The media could not be loaded. So this thing does go many places & surprisingly up more than I expected in levels of floor. I have had it cleaning kitchen and living room once a day then a scheduled daily clean of house. I could tell it has been getting 95% of all things, which is apparently better than my own vacuuming… I know the pic is gross, but this thing was full after close to two weeks!! It says 60 day capacity, I’m not mad at all we had to dump it early, just realized I have not been doing so well. We let our 3 dogs stay inside some of the day on beds, they don’t roam and other than that we don’t have a lot of dirt tracking. But this thing went under counters, couch as you see in video, and seems to provide a pretty good suction at the basic level. It’s louder, but if it bothers you maybe run it when not home, it’s not near as loud as our vacuum. I like to be able to schedule certain rooms. Lastly it did suck up part of my leggings then it let me know lol but that’s on me, so it will take a sock and then tell you it has something in it. All in all I think the quality is so far well worth it! I got it on sale, so I’m fairly happy with it, will see in the coming weeks how it continues.

    Not pet friendly

Within a week of using this vacuum, it’s sucked up blankets and dolls and shoes and now it’s gone through several piles of dog poo by our back door and dragged it though 2000sqft of flooring and rugs and is ruined. Never again… it absolutely does not detect things in its path.

    Not worth the money

I was super excited for this vaccuum because it was recommended by a friend. I had a eufy that I like but doesn’t self empty and with 2 dogs, it would sometimes leave clumps of hair behind. Pros: you can program it by day and time, doesn’t drag clumps of hair, you can mark out each room and it self empties. Cons: it is a little loud, comes with no replacement sweepers, doesn’t clean the floor very well especially near walls and if you have a wide floor plan or around corners. Overall, I wouldn’t waste this much money on this vaccuum again. Get a eufy or another brand that does a better job.

    Refuses to dock

The media could not be loaded. Not only did it quit docking itself, but it only cleans in circles. It has been fully cleaned, nothing in its way to prevent docking or cleaning. It doesn’t “see” very well and bumps into everything. Idk if we got a bad unit or that Shark is just junk, but we don’t recommend purchasing this model whatsoever.

But the worst is trying to return this boat anchor to Amazon. Do not waste your money on this product

I had this product since Nov 2022, It worked for 18 months and then give me an error code 6. You can search on the internet about error code 6 of this product. I called the Shark support and I was told that my shark was out of 1 yr warranty. They would send me a replacement with discount price. However the discount price was higher that the sell price in Amazon. I checked all the moving part that can cause the error code 6, all the moving part is working fine. It has to be the mainboard of this shark has some type of defeat. Since it is out of warranty, I have a non-function device at home for more than half year.

Started out working great, after a few years not so much

I had purchased this device coming from iRobot. At first this vacuum worked and I had little complaints. I feel maybe it wasn’t as accurate as the iRobot, but it still did the job with no issue. Overtime though it appears it got less efficient and throws errors every time I try to use it. Honestly this has rendered the device useless. I’ve started using my upright Dyson to vacuum myself again. Not sure what changed or if these devices just don’t last long. Personally I’d look elsewhere.

    Just meh (Purchased June 2024)

Bought this Shark based on reviews & recommendations. Placed this machine in a bedroom w/hardwood floors, also covers 2 bathrooms, laundry & back hallway. When running it’s fairly quiet, but very loud when evacuating. The area it’s responsible to clean is mostly light sand, grass & hair. Winter conditions will change that drastically, we’re just getting started on the season. What’s super disappointing, it does NOT edge clean. There is a solid one inch perimeter that has to be hand cleaned. The Roomba we retired was the best for edge cleaning but had other shortfalls (terrible battery, always stuck & never found its way home). So, hopefully this Shark can withstand the winter traffic. Time will tell.

So much louder than previous Shark robot

The media could not be loaded. The roller is MUCH louder in this Shark robot vs my previous (2520 I believe it was). After the first run I called Shark support and placed a ticket for it. Support told me that it’s just the way it is, that if it still bothers me I can call back and they could swap out for a different Shark. Just warning others that even when running it on Eco mode (lowest setting) it’s still very loud. Maybe consider another Shark. Update: Amazon is sending me a replacement. Hopefully I just had a faulty Shark and this one is less noisy!
