How Does the Wireless android auto car adapter Measure Up? Assessing Its Gains and Losses
Effortless and Reliable Connection: Many users, including Bill Ledbetter and TB, praise the Motorola MA1 Wireless Android Auto Car Adapter for its “Easy to install and use” capability, offering a seamless and wireless connection to the car’s display. Bill found the small size advantageous as it allowed him to “hide it in the storage compartment in the dash”, while TB was relieved to “no longer have to manually unlock my phone to use Android Auto”, finding it connected “flawlessly” every time after an initial setup.
High Compatibility and Convenience: Users like Khaled Elajam and Dave experienced consistent connectivity, with Khaled stating it “connects every single time with no drops or lag”, and Dave confirming that it “works perfectly” with multiple vehicles. This suggests the device’s compatibility with a range of car models and its reliability for maintaining a stable connection, significantly improving the driving experience by offering a cable-free solution.
Enhanced User Experience: Customers such as Danny and S. Roe found the device to significantly enhance their in-car tech interaction. Danny noted it was “well worth it for how well it works. Bulletproof!”, and S. Roe expressed delight at the convenience, stating, “It was so easy getting in the car later and voila…connected.” These experiences underline the adapter’s value in delivering a hassle-free user experience.
Connection and Durability Issues: Some users report connection stability problems and a limited lifespan. Jorge Andres Arenas describes his adapter as having turned into “just a brick” after 8 months of use, while Booger Goo experienced it “stops working after a year”. These reviews raise concerns about the device’s reliability over time and its susceptibility to connectivity issues.
Inconvenience and Compatibility Challenges: Despite the positive aspects, there are reports of the adapter not functioning as expected for all users. JR finds it “useless for drives under 15 min” due to the slow startup time, while K9dopecop points out a significant limitation, stating the device “requires VPN to be disabled”, which might be a deal-breaker for privacy-conscious users or those who rely on VPNs for work.
The stars speak of…
Opinions about this product were divided in such a proportion among the buyers.
After issues with the initial setup I was going to return it. Gave it another try glad I did. Work really well the setup take a little bite of time to get going but once it does your good. I do have an occasional and sort time issue when it losses Bluetooth connection with phone will reconnect quickly and your back a running. I would recommend that if you are going to get watch a few videos online to help with setup and be patient.
Works great when it finally connects, unfortunately i live in a small town and am at my destination 95% of the time before it finally connects…….useless for drives under 15 min.
Understanding More: Questions Answered and Explained
What is the Motorola MA1, and how does it work? The Motorola MA1 is a wireless car adapter that allows you to connect your smartphone to your car’s display without the need for cables. It’s a direct plug-in USB adapter that uses Wi-Fi to communicate with your phone, enabling you to access Android Auto wirelessly. Once plugged into your car’s USB port, the adapter pairs with your phone, and Android Auto starts automatically when you start your car, giving you access to navigation, music, and more.
Is the adapter compatible with all cars and smartphones? The adapter is designed to work with any car that has Android Auto support and a USB port. However, it is important to note that the car must have Android Auto capabilities. As for smartphones, it works with most Android phones that support Android Auto. It is recommended to check the compatibility with your specific car model and smartphone before purchasing.
How do I set up the adapter in my car?Setting up the adapter is straightforward. You plug it into your car’s USB port designated for Android Auto, pair it with your smartphone via Wi-Fi, and follow any on-screen instructions. The device typically pairs automatically once the initial setup is done, so you don’t need to reconnect manually every time.
Does the Motorola MA1 adapter require a power source? The adapter is powered through the USB port in your car. There’s no need for an external power source or battery. As long as your car is running or the accessory mode is on, the adapter will be powered and functional.
Can I still use my car’s USB port for charging while using the adapter? While the adapter occupies the USB port it’s plugged into, it typically does not prevent you from charging your phone. Many cars have multiple USB ports, so you can use another port for charging. If there is only one port, some users opt for a USB splitter or hub to retain charging capabilities alongside the adapter’s functionality.
What happens if I receive a call while using the adapter? When you receive a call, Android Auto will handle it just like it would with a wired connection. The call interface will appear on your car’s screen, and you can answer using the car’s controls. Your music or navigation will pause or lower in volume, and resume once the call is finished.
Is there any latency or delay when using the adapter for navigation or music? The adapter is designed to offer a seamless and responsive experience. There should be minimal latency or delay when using apps for navigation or music streaming. However, the performance can be influenced by factors like the smartphone’s processing power, the car’s head unit capabilities, and the quality of the Wi-Fi connection between the adapter and the phone.

Works 90% of the time
Works well 90% of the time. Occasionally it won’t connect and you have to unplug and replug it in. Sometimes drops randomly. But very convenient and works most of the time.

Fails after 1 year
So here is my opinion based on fact. When they work, they work well and very rarely had any issues. That being said I am on my 3rd one as they all start to fail after one year. Motorola replaced my first one with 2 new ones due to a clerical error. Mine just failed almost 1yr to the day and my Aunt’s, whom I gave the 2nd one tells me it’s been acting up for awhile now. I know I have performed every trouble shooting step and mine is not coming back. I can’t speak to what my Aunt or uncle did, but 2 failures is enough for me to not recommend this product.

Stppoed working after a year
The adapter worked well in the begginning and than all of a sudden it sotpped connecting and I saw a red light on the device. I could not factory reset and now its dead. It had potentail to be great. Needless to day I will not purchase it again and I will not recommend this to anyone. I purchased this for 96.29 at the time and I feel ripped off.

LASTS 1 YEAR AND CHANGE
Worked great for a year and now it’s dead. Bought another one, should be good for a year.
Dorb2 –
Works great once everything is setup
Works great once everything is setup. Had problems at first since the connection was not stable. After an update, it started working well.
Amazon Customer –
Worked great until it didn’t.
Had mine for roughly 6 months and then stopped working
Mark B –
Worked great, until I got a new phone
Product worked great until I got a new phone. Contacted Motorola, never heard back. So, if it works great, but when it stops working don’t expect Motorola to honor their warranty. Mine worked for 6 months
Jeffrey Garner –
Motorola CS is nonexistent.
Worked fine for 4 months then problems began. Too late to return it to Amazon. It is no longer usable as it stays connected for less than a minute. Motorola CS is not responsive. Avoid.

Well, it beats having to plug in my phone every time to get Android Auto, but…
it still cuts out at a particular area around town. On a heavily wooded road through a residential area abutting rural, this loses the signal. I have to pull over once back in ‘civilzation’ to get it back online as it does not reconnect automatically. That happened w/o this gadget, so was disappointed the problem lingers–and requires intervention to remedy. Additionally, since this does not charge my phone, cords are not completely eliminated if I need to do so. I bought this because charging cables (that also connected AA) work sporadically in my 2020 Jeep Compass. Hopefully, having this connected all the time will save wear and tear on the cars’ USB port. Will continue to look for an alternative–or just keep replacing the cables. Sigh.

Works until it doesn’t
A year later, right after the warranty period like most customers here this thing got stuck in an endless bootloop and would no longer work. There is no way to service it, reset, or anything. If you’re ok spending 50 bucks each year on one go ahead, it worked somewhat ok for that period.
Kumar Srinivasan –
It fails after a year
The MA1 worked for about 1 years and 3 months and cooked itself up. Is it a time bomb ? As others have experienced similar failures. I tried every trick on the Internet to get this going but to no avail. It is simple to use but therein lies the problem, it is too simple. It’s not clear how Motorola keeps it in sync with AA updates, like flashing the microcode. Anyway it was a very convenient device until it stopped working.

Lasted a year
When it worked it worked pretty well, only minor things here and there. But something happened at the 1 year mark almost exactly, and it just seems something’s wrong with the dongle itself. After spending a lot of time resetting everything on my phone, car, and dongle and trying to get it to stay connected for more than a few minutes, and then ultimately failing after a few more minutes past that.
KUHawksr1 –
Works as advertised
Very simple setup. Connects every time. Has never lost connection. Full Android Audio features available. Highly recommend. I also tried a smaller alternative and it was slow, couldn’t use voice. Returned it and sticking with this Motorola one. It works great!

Limited Connectivity and Unresponsive Customer Service
I purchased this product with high hopes, but unfortunately, it fell short of expectations. The device only operates for a brief period before encountering connectivity issues. It relies solely on a Wi-Fi connection, which frequently causes my phone to lose its network link, disrupting my workflow. Moreover, when reaching out to customer service for assistance, I was met with a surprising lack of acknowledgment regarding this issue. It was as if they were unaware of the problem, despite it being a significant hindrance to the product’s functionality.

Short shelf life
worked for 15 months (occasionally dropping connection) then completely failed (just right outside of the short warranty window). Unable to connect and unable to reset to factory setting (lights stuck in some loop). I’ve tried everything that I could find online but nothing works.
Benasha –
Not worth it!
The device stopped working after two weeks.

Stopped working in less than 5 months
It worked great for 5 months then just stopped.

Super easy hook up.
This is the definition of plug and play. Works flawlessly with my Galaxy phone and 2020 Road Glide Special. Nice and small and fits nicely in the glove box.
ESH-Torres –
Love it! Easy to install.
After 5 years of wired Android Auto, I’m finally wireless thanks to this little device. Instructions were clear and easy to follow. Worked in less than 5 minutes in my 2019 Ford Flex.

Lasted a year and a half
All in all, my wife used for 2022 Forester. Worked fine. At a year and a half it lost its ability to pair it to her phone. In that year and a half there were a couple times a month it would lose its ability to communicate through Bluetooth, but would eventually reconnect. Recently it just would not pair after numerous resets. We followed all steps on Motorola site for “it worked, but now doesn’t work”. Would be nice to get something for this. Having written this, we have ordered the same one today keeping our fingers crossed.

great, if and when it connects.
good sound quality when it works. very slow to start and connect. periodically crashes / disconnects and becomes a brick. Master reset attempts often fail to be acknowledged by the device. I have literally spent hours trying to reconnect. device reset, phone settings reset. even did a master reset of cars computer. reconnected and it worked all of 5 minutes.

Was ok for a while, only lasted 6 months

Works well until it doesnt
I habe had to by 3 of these since 2023. It will just stop working one day and stop syncing up to my cars screen my car is just a 2022 model. I tried everything to get it to work again. It’s happened a few times and then I get a new one and it works fine. Trying a different product this time

Works until it doesn’t
I initially liked this item. Worked great, then one day(shortly after the return window closed) it randomly disconnected while using it. Amazon customer service was great. Issued me a return label and refund.

I had no idea I could add wireless Android Auto to my car
We have plug-in Android Auto in our car, but it frequently gets flaky and randomly disconnects. I was wondering if there was such a thing as wireless Android Auto, and there is, and I was jealously browsing lists of cars that had it, when I saw my car listed as having it “with adaptor”. I bought a random $25 one first, and it didn’t work, so I went ahead and got this one which comes highly recommended on reddit, and it works great! I can use Android Auto without even having to take my phone out of my pocket (although it drains my phone battery pretty fast, so I often plug my phone into the cigarette lighter outlet anyway), and it has yet to disconnect like the plug-in Android Auto did. It even switches between my phone and my wife’s phone depending on who’s driving! (if we’re in the car together, then one of us just turns off bluetooth until it connects to the other’s phone). Hooray!

Stopped working after 10 months.
I was initially very pleased with this product; it worked flawlessly for the first ten months. However, after this period, it unexpectedly stopped functioning. I’m disappointed with its longevity, as I expected it to last much longer. I hope the manufacturer can address this issue for future customers.
Donald J Blasingame –
It Works as it should
It took a little work to get it working right but it does what it’s supposed to do. I have tried several wireless devices and so far this one works best.

Would not buy or recommend this itme
Well it started out good connected worked real good. But not even a year into my ownership it stopped working. I bought name brand because I figured it would last guess I was wrong huh?

Great product
Overall good product, gets the job done It does cut off at certain location however overall not bad
Tomas Ortiz –
Stopped working
I purchased this item on March 1 of this year and it stopped working about 3 weeks ago. The reason I am writing here is because I’ve not been able to find anyone to help me with this issue as far as warrantee repair or replacement. I just want to have this fixed or replace as less then 3 months working is unacceptable and to not be able to find anyone to reach out to I’d just a bad. Hopefully someone will reach out to me and help me resolve this issue. One plus is that it worked great for the short time it was working.
Nan Patterson –
Not working consistently
I wish I had return this within the window. Not working , drains phone battery and had to keep unplugging and plug back in to work.
JSmooVE3990 –
Works really well!
Straightforward connection and setup. Great packaging. Seems to work great in my Kia EV6 with no perceptible lag! Only downside is the pad they gave me to stick it to my car lost all stickyness right away.
Amazon Customer –
Not bad
I drive 2018 f150 wanted something because my phone would never connect with a wire. Bought this and long story short it works. It does work but takes a while to load up. Once in a while it doesn’t work and have to shut off my car and load it back up. Overall a decent product with some issues
I.S. –
Worked perfectly for 8 months and suddenly died.
I loved this little dongle for the 8 months that I owned it. Worked right away and was very reliable. Just the other day I was driving and it suddenly cut out. The car exited Android Auto and the icon to activate it didn’t come back. I unplugged and replugged the MA1 and it popped up Android Auto only to quit again. I’ve been troubleshooting for days and the connection never stays on now. The casing has been extremely hot to the touch. I think after 8 months, it simply fried itself.
Christopher J Ellenburg –
Constantly disconnects
Easy to set up. Works as advertised initially. Loses its connection about every fifteen minutes. Would not recommend.
Mr. Mark –
Too Darn Easy
I don’t know if this was planned but I plugged it into my USB on the Fusion and then had to take off so I said eh later….. 5 minutes into the drive by phone pops up do you want to connect to (MA1) I said uh OK. I did absolutely nothing. It figured I was too busy to do it so it finished the job for me and connects within seconds every time. Buy IT!

Easy to Setup and Connects Quick
I have tried many of the China Direct models and they all had issues ranging from connectivity, quality and consistency. This Moto device does not disappoint! Its easy to install and conceal if wanted. Very simple to pair to the phone, and hooks up and starts playing usually within the first minute. connection is clear and does not drop like the rest. Definatly worth buying this!

They work until they don’t
This is my second time ordering this. The first one lasted 26 months and one day stopped working. I looked at a bunch of different brands for a replacement, but they all seem to have around the same lifespan, so I decided to go with the devil I know. I’ll be happy if I get another 2 years out of the second one. Easy to set up Sound is good Connects easily Great size for my car Used in 2022 Corolla Cross with 2021 moto G stylus and moto thinkphone
Spanky T Spangler –
Lasted only one year
This product only lasted one year. After one year it would not pair any longer.
Randall Davis –
Just plugged it in and it paired immediately.
Nothing to dislike. Crisp clear and fast. Small ang great looking.

Nice alternative to wired Android Auto
My after-market android auto unit already had the wireless feature but was garbage so I had to use the wired option which worked great! But, having to connect/disconnect the cable was getting old and charging my phone while connected, was taking forever!!! Enter this Motorola option, I simply plugged into the AA cable then paired the MA1 to my phone very easily! The connection is strong, audio is perfect AND phone calls are now crystal clear on both ends. Charging my phone has improved since I can now connect to a real 12-volt to USB charger. Highly recommend.

Spontaneously Stops Working, No Support
After 2 years this product just stopped working, would not reset, and customer service told me I was SoL. It now gives a solid red light and will not hard reset for any reason. This happened in the middle of a drive. Absolutely nothing else changed, not the car, not the phone, no damage, nothing. $90 for a disposable product that will stop working for absolutely no reason? No thanks.

Didnt last 2 months
Worked great for a while, it would lose connection every now and then, but for the most part, worked fine. Then a couple months later, it would not stay connected… it would connect and work for a minute or so and then would disconnect. Had to return.

Worked for 1.5 years, then…
I purchased this in January, 2023. Setup wasn’t particularly easy, but I got it done. It worked great for 17 months, then just stopped working. I tried everything Motorola suggested, but nothing helped. I attempted a reset according to instructions, but all I got was a solid red LED–no flashing blue LEDs, etc. But here’s why I’m giving this a less-than-stellar review, perhaps best explained by the message I left on the MA1 support page: Tell us about your issue “My wireless car adapter for Android auto (MA1) stopped working while I was driving. Since then I have been unable to get it working again. I followed all the suggested steps (at least as far as I know) and had no luck. Most significantly, when I tried the Reset procedure, the LED did not blink blue. It just turned a solid red. I tried this several times, always with the same result. I’m at a loss as to where to proceed from here.” This was on June 16, 2024. I’m writing this review on June 23, 2024–one week later. I have had no response. Nothing. Nada. I’m buying a unit from a different company. I just sent in my order.
