Vacuum works, but watch out for carpets with pets and don’t trust the p.o.o.p claims!

This is just an “ok” robot vac. It does well on hard surfaces for most things, but totally avoids other things, like a stray candy wrapper, or spilled cat litter, or… or.. well, anything but small bits of dust and dirt. On carpet it’s a whole nother thing! It loves to grab up all the hair my cat can shed, and then rolls it around on it’s brushes till it’s a finely matted knot of hair – and then spits it out onto the carpet. It does this whether I have it set to medium suction or turbo suction. It does it whether I do 1 pass or 2 passes in each room. So when the robot has happily returned to its base, where it throws an error each time, I jump up to pick up the 8-10 pet hair knots on the floors. And about the base error. There is NO reason for it! I was all upset the first time it happened, 3 days after I got the vac. The error says that there is a base seal problem. I checked all of the base, following the instructions for clearing a base sealing issue. Everything was a-ok. No problems anywhere and the dustbin in the vac had emptied just fine. Checked and rechecked each day when I got the error alert on my phone. And again, no problems found, dustbin emptied just fine. Error persisted. I think it’s probably just some errant thing. Maybe part of a software glitch, because the vacuum and the base are both working as intended. Well, except that they need to remove the bit that advertises this vacuum as great for pets! Maybe it’s great for some people with pets, but not if you have carpets and do not trust the poop avoidance claim. Mine ran right the heck over a small poop on the floor when my cat had a wee accident near her box. Thankfully it was a nice hard poop, so only 1 small smear on the floor to deal with.

    The J9+ is a loser

I bought three J9+’s, one from Amazon and the last two directly from iRobot. The first could not climb a shag rug to get to the rooms. I returned it and got a refund. The second one I bought from iRobot. It worked for a while and then stopped navigating. The iRobot tech troubleshot it over the phone and said it had failed. He sent a replacement. It also started out okay and I thought we finally had a good one. Wrong! There are nine rooms on the favorites list and it started going to #5 and then to the end of the list and back home. The next tech said to run it three times to Everywhere. It did the same time. I contacted iRobot and am sending it back for a refund. We had three previous ones and they worked okay. This model did not live up to our expections.

There are both pros and cons.

disadvantage “The clean base is not sealed” every time it is cleaned. I too was plagued by this error. After trying various ways, I think that perhaps the Roomba is not returning to the clean base correctly when it returns. I checked the clean base with a level and found that it was tilted, so I put in an appropriate spacer to eliminate the tilt, and now it works. The second disadvantage is that long-fur carpets cannot be climbed in the first place, and even if they were allowed to climb, they would stop and cannot be cleaned. Third, when the suction power is maxed out, it sometimes stops on short-haired carpets. Fourth, it’s not suitable for rooms that are messy to begin with. advantage Despite the above disadvantages, there are some advantages. It is nice that they clean most rooms every day. In winter, salt is sprinkled on the roads. This salt often sticks to my shoes and gets into my room, which is unpleasant, but thanks to Roomba, this no longer happens. It also leads to an attempt to keep the room clean, and as a result, the room is kept clean and neat.

    Connection Issues and Sealing Problems!

I am severely disappointed in this Roomba model! This is our second Roomba and I thought purchasing a newer model meant that it would come with some perks and updates. Instead, this model is constantly displaying error messages saying that it is off-line. I have to pick up the Roomba off of the docking station and manually place it in the room that I want vacuumed and push the button. Because of this, all of the mapping aspects do not work and it shows that the vacuum is discovering rather than vacuuming a specific space. To top that off, every single time I use this vacuum, it unloads into the docking station and has a sealing problem. The entire vacuum will not work at that time because it has the red light displaying and a problem and I have to manually pick it up and clean out every single one of the areas that might have caused the seal issue. I wish I had purchased the older model. I have contacted Roomba a couple times and I am passed the return date. Customer service said that they were coming up with an update for this, and now I just have to play a waiting game while my $600 piece of equipment does not work properly.

    No instruction manual!!!

Just received it today. Seems to be of good quality. But there is no instruction manual!! If someone at the factory forgot to put one in the box, that’s one thing. But if iRobot expects everyone to download the manual and print it out, that’s pretty cheap of them. My point is, I was thinking about getting one of these for an 89 year old non-computer-savvy relative–such a person might be able to use this with a manual, but would be helpless without one. I went to the website and downloaded and printed out the manual, so I expect I’ll be able to use this thing. I will update this review once I have used the item for a while, but in the meantime–any other users, did you have a manual included in your box, or was my experience typical?

Defective unit and unreasonable customer service

Absolute rubbish unit and even worse customer support. After 4 months the unit is emitting an unbearable high pitched squeak. I followed customer support’s instructions including them sending me a new part to replace the cleaning head but the noise persists. Now they want me to send it for REPAIR and refuse to replace it. I didn’t drop the unit or damage it in any way. They have pictures and videos. I’m livid because I didn’t pay $700 for a patched up dud. I will never buy a Robot vacuum again.

    One of the worst investments

I’ve had this vacuum for one year and it worked decent for the first few months but now every time it redocks it says unable to start, and I have to reboot it. That means absolutely no scheduled cleanings. It pushes up a very small rug and says it’s on a cliff. It no longer recognizes the room borders that are set up in the app. Biggest waste of money!

    Unexpected operational costs

the multi-floor Rollers are considered a consumable item by iRobot and thus not under warranty, had a material failure in <2months, and cost $35 to replace. iRobot customer service could not do anything about it due to this company policy. In other words, iRobot thinks it’s acceptable for their customers to pay an additional ~$210/year in order to replace these rollers, which I’m sure most customers are not accounting for. The vacuum also does a pretty poor job: poor suction, erratic and non-comprehensive cleaning patterns, and often needs “help”.

Has software issues with no current solution.

Great when it works but has a software issue that results in the robot reporting a problem with sealing to the clean base for which irobot have no current solution and can’t provide a date for when they will have a solution. Probably should pause selling until they have a fix. I returned the first unit I ordered due to the problem (didn’t know the cause of the issue at that stage) and ordered a second one. Second unit worked great for a couple of weeks then started to have the issue and once it occurs there is no solution.

Hoped for the best and got garbage!

I’ve had my Roomba I3 for years. The thing has given me no problems even with the clean base. Its been very reliable. I ordered this under the impression that it was also going to be great quality and the J9+ within 3 months of having it has made me want to throw it in the trash! Within a month it started telling me the base was clogged. I went through everything and couldn’t find an issue. Then it started working again, however that wasn’t the end of it. After a few weeks I was getting a clog issue or a Bag full error. I have cleaned every filter and gone through forums trying to fix it. Just lately it now backs into things and the dust bin unlatches then it completely shuts down. I spent a big amount of money expecting an awesome robot and this thing is terrible. My old Roomba is still chugging along downstairs without an issue.

    Bad programming

This robot is dumb. Even after mapping out my house it still runs full speed into the walls, it doesn’t follow a pattern, and gets lost all the time. It supposedly requires light to see so it can’t run at night and is so loud it would disturb anyone trying to sleep. It also misses dirt such as cat litter on a hardwood floor.

Don’t think your buying experience will be any different

One star is being overly generous. I don’t write reviews, one way or the other, but this was too large of an expense not to. If it helps just one person, it will be worth my time. I purchased this unit in Dec. ‘23. I used it maybe 10 times within the first year because I found that moving all the obstacles before vacuuming was a bit of a hassle, and also it just didn’t compare to my push vacuum in performance. I did like the fact that it was able to get in difficult spots, such as under the beds. A couple weeks shy of its one year warranty date it lost its suction. After some degree of difficulty in reaching customer service, a lengthy amount of time on the phone, and photos sent via email, diagnostics were run remotely and they determined that there was an issue with the base. A new base was sent in a timely manner and they offered to extend my warranty by three months. After setting up the new base I ran a quick run of one bedroom. The robot would not seal adequately enough to the new base to provide enough suction to empty the bin and I got an error message. Again, I went through the same lengthy process with customer service and it was determined that the entire unit needed to be replaced. My warranty on the original robot was now within a couple days of expiring so I asked if they would still honor the three month extension. After checking with supervision they informed me that since they were replacing the entire unit they would not be able to honor any further warranty on the new unit. Ok. New unit. It should last a while, right? The new robot arrived, again, in a timely manner. It set up easily and I mapped the house and vacuumed without difficulty. A month later I went to vacuum and I got a message that the unit was unavailable because the software was being upgraded but would be available shortly. Three days later it was still displaying the same message. I rebooted several times. Nothing. I finally resorted to a factory reset and now I can’t connect to the robot at all. I’ve since done some online research and there is a definite trend here with issues occurring during software upgrades. Folks are being run through hoops via customer service only to be told that there is no fix, but…get this…they are offering 50 whole dollars toward a new unit. No joke. Check Reddit. I call b.s. Save yourself the aggravation, time and expense and vacuum the old fashion way. This thing has not been worth it, IMHO.

Extremely Poor Access to Customer Service… if you can even say that.

Don’t think that you will be able to get any good customer service… unfortunatley iRobot doesn’t know what that means. I tried on the phone and virtually and both i gave up after ~30 minutes each of hoping to get someone. you may say, well, sometimes wait times can be long. Well, I started on the phone with a noted reply from their recording that ‘the wait time is less than 25 minutes’. Then, after 17 minutes, it changed to ‘the wait time is less than 30 minutes’. Then at 30 minutes, it went to ‘the wait time is less than 25 minutes’. What the F??? I tried the virtual chat system, and I couldn’t get anyone even though it told me there was less than a 3 minute wait. I have a problem with my Roomba J series (with the automatic bin emptying system) that it won’t run. Only got it in July 2024 and here i sit with a very expensive boat anchor. I will not purchase an iRobot product again. It may be good at first, but if there is a problem, good luck. Very sad and they are laughing all the way to the bank with how much their stuff costs. Save your money and go with a different brand. If you do buy iRobot, good luck and I hope you have better service than me.

Being 78 I have trouble pulling on regular vacuums so I switched to I-Robots. I’ve had 3 and enjoyed using each updated one. This 4th one came out of the shipping box not working. I had to call for help. The service person got me to try all different things to make it he seal on base work but nothing worked. But I have to give I-robot credit they shipped a new base to me in 3-4 days and I’m no longer getting an error message. NOW, if I can only get it to go back on the base and empty the dirt instead of turning around and around, on the base, and leaving 2-3 feet, just to go back on base and do the same thing over and over! I got so frustrated I took it off base and have not touched it since. When my nerves have calmed down , I’ll call that repair man, AGAIN!

    Roomba is great but..

I’ve owned a couple of Roomba now. They’re great. I actually tried a similar product from a competitor, but was immediately seeking a refund. The mapping was horrible. I went back to a Roomba and was thrilled. The mapping was great, how it cleaned was great, and then.. the unit came back to the station and emptied itself. That j9+ base is excessively loud. I couldn’t tell if it was the base unit’s vacuum or an engine on a 747 getting ready for take off. Other than that, I’m pleased.

    Very disappointed

I purchased this product to clean the second floor of my house. As it is rated to have great mapping and cleaning ability. Unfortunately, that has not been the case. Mapping is fair at best. It took about 90 minutes to map my second floor. I then had to correct the map. Ok, I did that. Then, the first time it cleaned the mapped area, it got stuck twice. Duh! So then I had to create no go zones. Well, it ignores the no go zones. This is very frustrating. Cleaning carpet is fair however, it does well cleaning wood floors. Overall the product is clunky, bumping and banging around the house so badly it makes me wonder why does it has a camera. I executed a cleaning cycle while having breakfast downstairs and it sounded like there was an assault going on upstairs. I would not suggest this product especially for the price. Look elsewhere.

    Good, but not perfect

It works for the most part, sometimes software glitches prevent proper operation. One needs a lot of patience on occasion to get things running, but for me with some physical problems it’s a life saver. Overall in my larger home it’s a big time saver and I no longer have to hire a housekeeper. It doesn’t do windows or scrub toilets however, so your expectations should be reasonable. It is well worth the money and technical service at the 800 number is very good. I’ve been using mine for a year and by this time probably saved $2000.

    Cool tech, mediocre cleaning

I really wanted a Roomba to be an easy solution for managing dog fur but it just doesn’t vacuum effectively on rugs and leaves clumps of fur even on hardwood floors. The tech is great – mapping, managing cleaning areas, etc. – but the cleaning power of this machine is mediocre at best. Plus, the bag capacity in the home station is very small and the app is constantly nagging to replace and order more bags, filters, brushes… so the operating cost of this device is high. The final straw was the machine getting “stuck” under a table on a rug edge, so the job quit and I had to rescue the poor helpless machine – twice! Conclusion: It can’t handle our single-story, all-even-levels, all hardwood floor house with minimal thresholds and several low carpets, so we’re pulling the plug on this experiment.

Almost 10 year old Neato vs brand new Roomba

UPDATE: Figured out how to move boundary designators. Also found function to increase suction. However I have it on the strongest and it still leaves bread crumb size bits on the kitchen tile floor. In 2015, I researched robotic vacuums and a video that someone posted comparing the cleaning pattern of both Neato and Roomba units in the same space convinced me. We purchased a Neato 65 and eagerly set up “Ned” and the magnetic strips to have regular cleaning of the main floor of our house (living room, dining room, kitchen, bathroom and back room). Ned had issues with certain spaces mainly having to do with differing flooring levels (rug, wood, marble hearth) in close proximity to each other. And he had to have his canister cleared manually multiple times during a cleaning. Otherwise, he was a welcome addition to the family particularly cleaning up the kitchen. Ned however has been getting up there in years. So, we decided to get a new robotic vacuum. One of the key requirements was that it had the capacity to empty its canister and unfortunately Neato does not make one that does that. We have a German Shepherd, a breed known for year-round shedding, so emptying the canister multiple times during a cleaning was imperative. Thus, we purchased the Roomba j9+, “Ronney”, which we have run now numerous times and here are some thoughts. -Neato does a much better job of vacuuming in a grid pattern rather than bouncing around. -Neato does a better job of backing itself out of a stuck situation. -Neato has much better suction. I picked up a ball of dog hair that Ronney had missed and set it in front of it. All it did was run it over and it was stuck to its side. -Neato has a more delicate touch on surfaces and seems to notice them before even hitting against them. -It is an improvement not to have to use the magnetic strips to contain the vacuum’s path. However, it would be nice to be able to move the boundaries of the rooms that the Roomba app selects for each area of our open plan space. For example, it considers the back entry and bathroom to be part of the back room rather than the kitchen. All have tile vs. carpet (back room) or wood (dining and living rooms) and gets more traffic than other spots. -Ronney has the same issues as Ned in navigating varying heights that are in close proximity to each other. -I love the fact that Ronney automatically empties his canister, multiple times per cleaning…as I said we have a German “Shedder”. However, all told, if Neato made a model with that feature, Ronney would go back to Roomba. An almost 10-year-old Neato performs better on many levels.

Tech support has been good but they don’t have a clue why it keeps happening. I have moved it to 3 different locations and still get these red lights. I’m thinking that the trash holder has a defective design. When I look into the holder you can see dirt that the emptying system is not cleaning it out. This is sad because the vacuum itself does a good job but the clean out doesn’t work.

Do not buy this piece of junk!

This vacuum has programmed itself over several months and still gets stuck over and over in the same spots. I have put keep out zones and it still goes there. Although there is a map of my floor plan it still has no idea where it is in my home. It just moves around and bumps into stuff and gets stuck in the groove on my sliding glass door. I am extremely disappointed considering the money I paid for this. My family hates it because it is loud and takes 1-2 hours to vacuum a room. I should have bought a Dyson.

Garbage, This unit has a dirt detection that can’t be shut off! Took 1hr to clean a 10×10 section

Garbage, This unit has a dirt detection that can’t be shut off! Took 1hr to clean a 10×10 section. so you would think just go into software and disable dirt detection but nope! you cannot shut it off. We had 2 stop it 8 times because it never got out of the small living room 10×10. so back to the i3 that clearly works better than this thing! What a horrible design!

    Very Happy with Vacuum

Second Roomba Purchase. Big up grade from I7 the battery has 2 hours of run time and the suction is much better. The upgrade base with self removal is great and make product much more self sufficent. I am very happy with purchase.

    Where is the cord?

I didn’t get a cord. So I after 3 wasted hours with both the ai customer service and an agent in India I’m still without a working roomba. I even bought the $1000 unit. I just need the cord so I can charge it. I’m never going to buy this brand again.

Expensive paperweight, right out of the box.

After purchasing this on sale for Christmas, we set it up per the instructions and started the mapping process. It went three feet away from the docking station and errored out. It said to move it to another location and try again. It failed again. Tried to move it four times with the same result, so back to Amazon it goes. Don’t waste your money.
