Under the Microscope: Evaluating the Product’s Pluses and Minuses
What do the stars speak of?
Opinions about this product were divided in such a proportion among the buyers.
I’ve had this just for a day, but I know this robot is going to surpass my S9+. I have a J6+ in my office and it’s NEVER gotten stuck in 6 months of ownership. Its dodged cords, dog toys and blankets that have fallen on the floor. This robot has been doing the same, the suction is like my S9, however the side brush doesn’t get crushed like the S9 did on carpet. Mapping my house used to take 3 hours on the S9, with this robot it did it in half that. The method for mapping has changed and it speeds it up. The map is accurate, LIDAR wasn’t needed. It picks up all my dog hair and sand from when I visit the beach. I bought it for $599 early black friday deal Nov 2023.
I got this to replace my Roomba I have had for years It still works great but it is very loud and has no obstacle detection at all I just got a puppy so that is important to me After doing some research I decided to go for the top of the line J Right off the bat it had problems It leaves the base and stops for over a minute then starts again for a while then wants the bin emptied Its brand new and has never run nothing is in the bin Once I got it to run for a while after several time of restarting it from the base it started to map my house I went into a few rooms fine most it did about half then left never to return Nothing I could figure out would make it map or even try to enter the unmapped part of my house I googled this problem and found lots of people complaining about the same thing with the J The only answer was keep running it and hope it smartens up or wait for a update at some point I’m not paying what I paid for this

Ready for takeoff?
The ability to smartmal our apartment and set it and forget it is awesome. I also THOUGHT we would love the self cleaning feature. However, despite the fact that this thing does clean good and consistently according to schedule, the “self emptying” process is the equivalent of a jet taking off inside your home. It’s incredibly loud and lasts about 15-20 seconds. We live in a high rise and it usually takes two cycles complete the entire apartment, emptying the bin each time with the most atrocious sound. For that reason alone, I would not recommend this thing to anyone. It does the job but I would Rather empty the filter myself at the end of each night when it’s done versus waiting for the jet taking off every night… waking up all of our neighbors and us 😐

Improved over the older model
It is quite now and it empties itself. No need to manually empty after each cleaning. These are two major improvements.

Dust and particles fall from the unit when it goes trhu a step
For hard floors is a nice product. I’ve used for many years the EUFLY 800 (i think is the model) and this one actually does the job done. The only problem for me is that when it goes through a litle step some particles of dust and debries are thrown out of the bin and gets spilled in the way. Apart from that, everything good.

Extra Performance
My Roomba J9+ has a longer battery life and more power compared to I7+ that I returned. I keep it in medium power setting and it consistently ramps up power immediately when it gets on carpet. I always start it from the app. Vacuums my entire down stairs on one charge and has “learned” not to get stuck. We now let it run when we are not home. I think it is best to supervise it for the first week of use. We have had it for a month now. Pay attention to messages in the app. I was frustrated at first because it vacuumed up something that it could not pass to the bag, so I had to remove the article from the bin. But I originally thought my new Roomba was malfunctioning when it was not and was working as intended!

Works well!
This is my third Roomba and the best. I latterly wore the tires slick on my last one. Great navigation, finishes jobs quickly and has great battery life.
Michele Szmolke –
Seems good, but has many issues.
The product red rings when attempting to go back to base.. such an annoying issue.. Tried calling IRobot, but they tell me to do stuff I already did. Avoid the j9+ model.. its too new and needs fixing.

One dog, one cat, so much less hair everywhere!
We’d been using a Roomba that we originally got in 2014 and decided it was time for an upgrade. This new one is absolutely quieter in comparison, and more effective. It has better suction on our area rugs, and is better at actually getting up onto the thicker rug from the hardwood floor. The dock empty noise is LOUD as heck but I’m glad it has that function! We have a dog and a cat, and the dust bunnies and rogue pieces of kitty litter are now a rare sight. Of course, it doesn’t get every nook and cranny so we have to do a bit of hand-vacuuming once a week as well. It’s been running daily for over a month now, with no issues so far!

Does a great job!
Most important thing to know is that you must take the time to map your living space if you expect this robot to do a good job. Having completed that step, I am having the robot clean the various rooms in my house and then reviewing in order to set up special cleaning zones and keep out zones. It’s really easy to use and it’s doing an excellent job. I have 3 pets and a lot of pet hair, so I’m expecting a lot from my robot. I may have to buy one for upstairs!

Lasted 16 Months
I purchased in December 2022 and RIP in April 2024. Other than the fairly short lifespan, I would rate this as an okay cleaner. About once a week it wouldn’t make it fully into the base for charging. A handful of times over it’s life it went through a pile of mess that our dog left for it. We have older dogs that have an occasional accident, which is why we purchased this model. I think it mostly avoided those piles, but when it didn’t, it definitely left a mess for us to clean up. It did a pretty good job cleaning up dog hair, but my wife still felt the need to vacuum the house once a week to get all of the hair or mess that it didn’t get. As for its short lifespan, it either isn’t charging or isn’t capable of turning. I tried the contact cleaning and reset, but the device doesn’t do anything no matter what I try. I might try taking it apart to see if I can figure out what actually caused it to stop working. With a one year lifespan, I might try a cheaper option to see how it compares in other ways.

This is the future!
The Roomba effortless mapped out my large, multi-room house. The cleaning effort was phenomenal. It goes under beds and into areas where conventional vacuums do not reach. I have a two room house and like the Roomba J9+ so much, that I purchased a second unit, which is for my second floor bedrooms. (Yes, the J9+ would have learned my second floor and could have been used there, but it is do much easier to just have a “dedicated” unit for each floor.

I love this vacuum
This vacuum works on all the hair my dogs shed. The mapping was pretty good. The only bad thing about it is it seems to go over some areas more than once, but that’s ok. I love how it returns to the hub & empties the bin when it’s full & then goes back to cleaning the room it was in.

Wrong Dust Bin!
Update: I contacted Roomba and was told that the wrong dust bin was sent! The main reason I bought this model was the self emptying. This item does not self empty, not from the first time I used it. I followed all the steps in troubleshooting and it still does not work.

” Larry ” Our Roomba j9+ is amazing so far !
Admittedly it is still early, but I am very impressed with the vacuuming job that ” Larry ” our Roomba j9+ is doing. We had a Roomba i3+ for the last three years. It had finally decided that it would no longer vacuum for us. It just stopped randomly without cause, and constantly needed it’s bin manually dumped. The old i3+ drew a line in the sand about vacuuming the popcorn by the side of the bed. ( My husband shares his nightly popcorn with out dog, throwing up for him to catch. Unfortunately, our dog is not good at catching it, so there are bits to vaccuum in the morning. ) I looked at the reviews and wondered if the j9+ would be worth the extra cost. “Larry ” our new j9+ jumps into action and cleans the entire first floor without a whimper nor complaint. The cleaning is noticeably more thorough than our old i3+. It has superior suction which is important for us for the dog hair. It never asks us to manually empty the bin. It covers all areas of each room. It doesn’t stall in the areas where there are minor obstructions ( like a light cord bulging under the area rug ). The only problem is that my husband has complained that I complement Larry for his cleaning more than I complement him. I guess I need to work on that.

Broke after a month
Bought it for my gf. Have a 2 bedroom apt in Boston. Ran it for three weeks. Wasn’t used everyday. Broke. Went thru the entire trouble shooting process, no luck. Now trying to have customer service help with getting it fixed or a part shipped. Pain in the a**. Wouldn’t recommend it.

Battery needs replaced after 2 years
I have had this vacuum for exactly 2 years and the battery isn’t working. I called iRobot customer service for tech support and they confirmed I need to buy a replacement battery. The vacuum is good at sweeping up hard surface floors and has decent suction on low pile carpet. Very disappointed in the short battery life for a product this expensive.

Irretrievably Broken After 10 Mos
Yep, it DID last for nearly 10 months but, for what I paid for it, it’s frankly not worth the expense. Kind of sad to watch it wander aimlessly through the house, not being able to find home base

Still the same old technology
The media could not be loaded. I had the old model since years and the most annoying thing was that it kept banging on the furniture and walls. When the new model was advertised with “Precision Navigation” system, I was happy that they finally solved the problem. But, the only precision this new robot has is to keep banging every wall and object precisely even with the “careful driving” mode turned on. The video is with careful drive on. The worst is that it speeds up from one side of the room precisely towards the chair or wall or whatever object it finds and hits it. I don’t get it. It is like trying to target obstacles instead of avoiding them. It also keeps hitting every wall alongside again and again until the end of the wall. It is like blind and no sense of proximity. Even a $10 proximity detector does a better job. And the App! Omg don’t get me even started about the worst software on planet earth. Constant crashes, disconnects and the worst: once you create a map and miss a room good luck adding that room. It keeps creating new maps instead. iRobot is the combination of software and hardware failures. But a broomstick and save yourself the frustration and hefty cost.

This thing is a boss!
Got it on sale and I am NOT disappointed! It has vacuumed areas we simply could not reach with a regular vacuum and has LOTS of batter power to vacuum my 2200 sq ft home! The app is easy to use as well!

Single biggest POS ever
Have had since late January. It has never successfully completed a cleaning. It’s either the Error 26 or it can’t connect to the wi-fi. And it’s a complete roll of the dice to see which one you get. Usually it’s 26 followed by the wifi error when you try to reboot or send it back to the dock. Trying to get my money back for this thing. Not worth the frustration.

Works better than expected
I have been a Dyson person for the last 10 years and I really wanted the new Dyson Vis Nav but it’s currently unavailable and the price is astronomical. That got me looking at Roomba. All the positive reviews can’t be wrong and I got mine for $300 below MSRP right here on Amazon. I like how well it mapped my home! It’s really accurate. I have not had it long enough to comment on all of the features such as Dirt Detective but there are a few things I can comment on. I feel it could use stronger suction. I’m using it on hardwood floors and I want it to get stray cat litter. It picks up most cat litter but a lot of granules get left behind in the roller chamber. Also when the Roomba docks and attempts to empty itself it never fully gets all the litter out of the dust bin in the Roomba. It seems to get all the cat hair and regular dirt/dust with no issue though. Battery life is also very good. It is able to vacuum my entire house on one charge. Run time seems a bit long (2 hrs) but that may improve as it learns more about my house. I don’t really care too much about run time as I have it set to do it’s thing while I’m at work and it’s done by the time I get home. I plan to keep my eyes on Dyson though. As they improve their robot and add features I’ll probably jump ship. Theirs has the power of an upright vacuum and it has a permanent washable filter. Also no bags to deal with. For now this is a good machine to get my feet wet in the robotic realm.

Saves time
Purchased in May 2023: iRobot Roomba j7+ (7550) Self-Emptying Robot Vacuum. It does a good job overall, and if it ever bites the dust (pardon the pun) — I’d be buying another one – the latest model 🙂 We have wide plank flooring, no carpet, no pets, no kids. We no longer use our upright vac. However, the dust mop is useful to get where the robot can’t. 1. If you have uneven, bumpy floors, those spots will be missed. 2. Some spots you’ll need to dust/clean, like around toilets, behind open doors, and under items that don’t provide enough clearance to go underneath. 3. Long haired households will need to remove some hair from underneath the robot after each cleaning or two, but don’t worry, it’s really easy and quick to remove it. 4. The software app isn’t the most user friendly, but eventually, I managed to create a decent map of the whole house and figure out the rest as needed. 5. The BEST MAP I got, was the one mapped with the least amount of stuff on the floor (an empty room is best but not practical) so, pick up everything that could possibly be picked up off the floor. For me, removing chairs, end tables, coffee tables, floor lamps, ottomans, etc., created a better map. 5. If furniture is moved, removed, or added back, it will clean where it can go, and it notifies you if it finds a ‘new space’ because you rearranged the furniture and exposed the previously unmapped space. 6. I found that keeping wires and cords permanently off the floors, or bundled in a tube made for that purpose, or secured with velcro wraps made for a better cleaning experience (and dust bunny management). The ability to create favorites and mini-areas to clean instead of whole rooms or the whole house, saves on the maintenance of replacement parts — which are based on hours of use.

OK for hard surface; pathetic customer support
I’ve used this for 4 month now and while I am enamored with the technology, the performance is lacking. The vac (loosely said) does well on hard floors, though the edge brush does kick some debris away from the vac that it doesn’t go back and get. Really, the unit is more of a hokey broom with a little vacuum, than a true vac. The suction power is not adequate to reach very far into carpet. I can use my upright vac after a session on a carpeted area with the Roomba (even on Berber) and still get considerable dirt and lint, even some hair. I will continue to use it on carpet, but I’ll have to use my upright at least every week or two to assure things are clean. As for their customer support, it gets a pale 1-star rating – whether live or online. Today I needed to reset my password. How hard is that to automate? Oh, but the links took me right back to the login page. Useless!! Got someone live on the line and twice they sent me different links for a reset page. They did appear to be reset pages, but no active windows to reset the password. The issue was elevated, but no projected response time. “Try again tomorrow”, was the final suggestion. Oh, and it is faster and more accurate to go to YouTube for user help than the links on the iRobot site.

BUYER BEWARE! LOVES TO EAT POO!
This vacuum sits on a charging base of lies! I bought this solely because of its so called ability to avoid pet poo and it appears to seek it out! Smeared poop EVERYWHERE! I was already frustrated with the vacuum cleaner, as it bumps into everything, randomly gets stuck and says it needs cleaning when it doesn’t. Plus it’s LOUD. My $100 Eufy is better than this $600 hunk of junk. I regret buying this vacuum so much. I’ll never buy another Roomba again.

Less then a week defective parts, wrong item
It’s more daring and better at navigating compared to the older model I had for years, but already having to replace defective parts is sad. nothing wrapped in it or unusual items on the ground to cause this. I just found one of the ends on the ground. Hard to see but it’s missing material in the core. Last is they sent the i7 not a j7 model Difference between the 2 is camera position for avoidance

Not impressed
I have a long haired dog. It just rolls the hair into little balls and leaves them behind. As far as other dust and dirt. It’s only marginal even on high suction.

Must Own For Pet Owners
Not my first robot vacuum; but definitely the easiest to use / maintain. The camera allows it to effortless navigate around the daily mix of randomly tossed dog toys with ease. Its gentle mode doesn’t hit walls or scratch things. And I love the ability to disable to physical buttons (keeps kids from playing with it) and scheduling it. I can’t recommend this enough for pet owners as well. It keeps dust, hair, dog treat crumbs all in check; and the auto emptying bag? Holds a TON of fur. I was shocked. Make sure to use legit replacement parts, especially that air filter. It catches a LOT and keeps my air nice and clean 🙏🏻✨

Worked great for a while, but then stopped working
tldr: I liked the product, but it stopped working despite a lot of back and forth with customer service. I’m going to need to find another robot vacuum. _________________________________________________ I started my iRobot journey with a basic vacuum which didn’t have the clean base or the mapping feature. I was happy enough with that to upgrade to J7+, which was awesome for about a year. However, after about a year of owning the J7, consistent communication errors between the vacuum and the clean base started. To fix this they sent me a replacement clean base, but disclaimed that a +150 refurb of the vacuum might be needed. The clean base replacement worked intermittently, but I did keep having communication issues and spent far too much time rebooting the vacuum and the clean base. The replacement clean base finally conked out when one of the charging contacts became permanently depressed. They are asking me to $200+ pay for a new one. This would be on top of $150 dollars that might be needed to have the vacuum refurbished to take care of the communication issue. For the $350+, I’m going to be looking at other options.

No time saver
I bought this because I wanted to save time. First of all it constantly gets stuck & needs cleaning. It does a mediocre job on grit & doesn’t fit to vacuum under bathroom & bedroom cabinets. Finally, I’ve only used it less than 14 times & it already has a major clog. Not saving me time at all. Don’t waste your money.
J. Davis –
Decent
Replaced a 5 year old robot vac that ran daily when I was home. I have a beagle, so daily vacuuming is the only way to keep the dog hair down to a dull roar. Suction is comparable to my old one. This one doesn’t get stuck in the fringe from one of my Iraq rugs like the old one did, so very happy with that. I did upgrade to the self emptying version. I’m on the fence about that feature. If you’re not a light sleeper, you can run this vacuum at night – until it goes back to the dock to empty the bin. At that point, the noise level escalates to something reminiscent of your great grandmother’s Kirby Hoover. Ain’t nobody sleeping through that! Side note: this might be a great way to wake your blackout drunk friends and get them out of your house. Yes, it’s that loud.
JWR –
Roomba: It certainly does suck.
Now instead of spending my time actually vacuuming, I devote it to maintaining and troubleshooting the garbage machine. Fairly irritating to pay what they require for a Roomba and get a quite subpar experience. Rebooting 3 times seems resolve whatever existential crisis my Roomba is having – perhaps I need to get it an Audible subscription to listen to Ryan Holiday or Pema Chodron?
Kellie –
Frustrated with seller
We purchased this vac when it was on a big sale. After a delay in shipment, the seller cancelled my order for no reason (per Amazon). I went to the product and they reduced the discount by $130. I called Amazon and thankfully they offset the cost (went through management) so I was able to reorder. Only to have the shipment delay multiple times again. Right when I figured we would get cancelled on again it arrived). I love the vac but I’d advise a different seller. The vac is louder than my last BUT it’s a shorter time to dump than my previous so I’m very happy with it. Brushes are staying on and it does an exceptional job of dodging cords, etc. It takes pictures which is pretty cool too. We were a victim of a dog poop catastrophe with the old one and this one is much better at avoiding objects.

dont buy from this vendor
The Roomba is going to be fine. But the vendor? They selected the US Postal Service, and it took 20 days to get here. It was 9 days late. To top that, when it arrives that packaging is open, and the instructions are missing.

Watch the battery
This device does a good job cleaning but it’s not perfect. This Roomba is not as good as my upright (which I expected) but it’s great in between regular vacuuming. The app is also user friendly. It does tend to curl hair up into a ball then leave it on the carpet along with other small random things from time to time. For that reason I question how this would handle pet hair. The biggest disappointment I’ve had with this unit is how it handles battery life. The first time I used it I set it to clean as many rooms as possible. When it ran out of battery it went to charge and said it would continue the job afterwards. That was just fine but the Roomba does a poor job in estimating how much charge it will need to complete the job. The first time it charged for 45 minutes, then 30 minutes, 15 minutes, and finally only charged for 7 minutes allowing it to vacuum for another five. It continued to only charge for 7 minutes and vacuum for about five minutes 10+ times before i cancelled the job out of annoyance. Something else I found irritating was when it did continue the job it would often re-vacuum some of the same spots it already did. Also once the Roomba continues the job after charging it is not ideal that the app can no longer tell you which room it’s on. It just says what it’s doing. To prevent this from happening I now just split the house in half so it starts both jobs with a full charge but I feel I shouldn’t have to. Am I happy with this Roomba? Yes, I am. Do I think it’s the best robotic vacuum out there? I’m not sure.

Extremely unimpressive
I’ve had this roomba for over a year now so I’ve given it plenty of time to try and impress me. It just does not have the suction to really clean the floors. I’ve even placed loose small bits of debris in its path to see if it’ll pick it up and it doesn’t. I have kept up with all the part replacements as well. I’ve replaced filters, blades, brushes, and bags to make sure it has the best suction possible and it doesn’t work. I’m also having it run on tile, not carpet. Even then it just does not, and has not, done a good job. Definitely not worth the money. I’ve also had issues with the app and with the vacuum connecting to the internet. While these issues haven’t been common over the past year, the fact that they’ve happened more than once is unacceptable. I would not recommend this vacuum to anyone.

Invasive cameras
IRobot technology is sub par to its competitors. Their use of color cameras record your home and take color photos. This means low light scenarios impact performance. The robot has continually gotten less effective over the past 5 months to where it just randomly drives around bumping into walls. Look for a robot that uses Lidar tech, such as Roborock. I retired the iRobot after 5 months and replaced with a Roborock.

Keeps locking you out–requiring new and more complex password–it’s a vacuum
I’m really irritated at being locked out of the app. It keeps wanting the password changed; then a more complex password. This is a robot vacuum, not a bank account. I suggest trying Roborock, which doesn’t seem to have these problems. I really just want to clean floors, not update passwords and systems.

Not perfect
This vacuum does not like the thick rug I have. Often can’t get onto the rug from the wood floor. Erratic cleaning patterns are frequent. Sometimes cleans the room in 50 minutes and then the next cleaning can take almost 2 hours. Gets stuck and shuts down about every other week at the same spot.

Does what it’s supposed to
I’ve been running this J7+ for over a week. It does a good job of mapping your house and breaking it down into zones. Scheduling zones is easy. It cleans good and manages obstacles better than I expected. I would say it does most of the heavy lifting as far as floor cleaning goes. It does not completely replace the human effort but greatly reduces our work. Our home is one floor, 3000 sq feet. It recharges as needed to do the job. Although it is pricey, We recommend the J7+.

Waited a while for this review.
Purchased back in November. Worked good for several months. We always maintained it and kept it clean. Then it threw error code 26. Nothing you can do will resolve it once you get this code. Motherboard is fried. Looked it up and apparently it’s an issue with this model. Waste of money.
