Under the Microscope: Evaluating the Product’s Pluses and Minuses
The Roomba series has been a household name, and for a good reason. The Roomba Combo J5, in particular, receives praise for its intelligence and mapping capabilities. Users like Stacy Tallent claim it’s the “best robot vac” they’ve ever owned, lauding its ability to map rooms, avoid stairs, and integrate seamlessly with Wi-Fi. The same model has been recognized for its quiet operation compared to earlier series, as noted by A customer, and its efficient cleaning that leaves even skeptics like A customer impressed after a comparative test with another Roomba model.
Customers who invested in the Roomba i7 appreciate its thorough cleaning and virtual fence feature. Michael describes the vacuum as having “amazing quality and cleaning,” and others echo the sentiment, highlighting the i7’s effectiveness in picking up fine dust and pet hair. Another customer, who replaced their previous Roomba with a refurbished i7, testifies to its performance, suggesting that it operates just as well as a brand-new unit.
Some users find additional convenience in specific features, such as the virtual dead zones, which are accurate and useful, according to Justin Smith. When it comes to the i7’s compatibility with the clean base, Judy West finds a workaround by swapping the dustbin with their older Roomba, leading to satisfactory results. Despite the shortcomings of certain aspects of these Roomba models, it is clear that they can be a significant time-saver and a handy addition to modern households looking to automate their cleaning routines.
However, it’s not all smooth sailing. A significant number of users have voiced their dissatisfaction with various aspects of the Roomba vacuums. For instance, Susan G criticizes the Roomba Combo J5 for its lack of a proper mapping feature, tendency to mop carpets, and difficulties with thresholds and cords. Another user, Sandrine Fouilhoux, experienced a complete letdown when the vacuum worsened the condition of a plush rug by failing to suck up lint and instead spreading it around the room.
The Roomba i7 has its own set of issues, with customers like Wendy Blake noting that it requires frequent cleaning of the rotating sweepers due to hair accumulation. John Peiffer and others have reported noisy operation and defective motors. A significant concern comes from the battery life and reliability. For instance, Alan Poznoff shares his frustration with the device not recognizing the OEM battery after only six months of use, and others mention the need to replace the battery within a short time frame.
Other cons include the robot’s inability to work properly with the clean base without an additional purchase, as Faith Ryan points out. Furthermore, customers like Sandra Dee criticize the design changes from previous models that made maintenance more difficult. Complaints about receiving used or damaged products, like those from Sarah Rich and Amazon Customer, add to the concerns about quality control and the value of investing in a Roomba.
In conclusion, while the Roomba vacuums have their proponents, the negative experiences and issues raised by a significant number of users suggest a potential gamble on the product’s performance and longevity. Prospective buyers might want to weigh these considerations carefully against the benefits before making a purchase.
What do the stars speak of?
Opinions about this product were divided in such a proportion among the buyers.
OK, a bit noisy and it could have a better suction power
If you have a pet or family member with long hair, the rotating sweepers MUST be cleaned after every use or the accumulation of hair around the axle interferes with the machine. This accumulation of hair is what destroyed my first Roomba.

Dumb
Never buy this piece of junk again ..send it back for replacement and the replacement was just as bad. Map it at least 10 times and it’s still didn’t follow instructions. Bought it because I had spined surgery and cannot use my regular vacuum cleaner. I told them send somebody out and have them at it. Maybe that’s what they need to do. I don’t know what else we can do! It says error something’s in its way and its path. We look, there’s nothing that is path. So we turn it around, then we tell it to send it home Alexa, send it home it goes all around the house pass The charging station end doesn’t dock. We have to put it in the dark Station. When she does dock my husband and I literally clap with joy.

New Roomba
It looks around and makes sure not to run over cords in the floor and remembers where it has been.

Works great!
Working exactly as advertised.

50/50
It has become frustrating to use. Sometimes it doesn’t run and the app doesn’t connect. It does not work well unless it is connected to WiFi. Overall, it is not dependable at all. The older version I had was 100% better.

Quality Issues
After a lot of research, I ended up choosing the Roomba J5 Combo because I believed it would be the best option compared to other competitors. However, my regret began after the FIRST use, where the side cleaning brush broke two of the three rods. There was nothing on the floor or in the path of the robot that could be considered a problem to cause this. But the worst part was when looking for iRobot support. The product was purchased on Amazon US, so I contacted iRobot, sent all the information and proof of purchase. However, as I live in Brazil, he advised me to contact iRobot here. I got in touch, repeated all the information and in the end they told me to contact iRobot in the USA. In short, a total mismatch of information and a lot of nonsense to solve a problem that theoretically should be simple. I felt great disrespect for the consumer.

What A Great Vacuum
We upgraded from a 600 Series iRobot and are very happy. This one is much quieter than the 600 series we had and much easier to clean. We are considering the purchase of the dust hopper so that it will not stop due to a full dust bin. The first run we had it do was a mapping run without vacuuming. With that, I was able, with the app, to label the rooms. It will also update the map after each vacuuming run as you get the ability to go through the pictures that it took of obstacles that it found. We also like that the app tells you what room it is in and you have the option of skipping to the next room. It will automatically return to the base, to recharge or if the dust bin is full. You can also have it just do one room. We are very happy with this product!

Doesn’t work
Terrible product
Jim –
I regret buying this garbage
The unit constantly claims the bin is full even after you just emptied it. I cant get it to run for more than 5 minutes. DO NOT waste you money on this garbage. I could have bought 2 Dysons for this price.
Amazon Customer –
Unreliable
We’ve had this for about six months and it is very unreliable. It leaves dog hair tufts all over the carpet instead of sucking them up and has a very hard time reconnecting when it goes back to the base. Multiple times a week I am having to clean off the sensors on the vacuum and base so it can reconnect.
Armando –
Sensor Bin problem
Because the subction hole is too small is blocked for the powder that causes the sensor to activate and the vacuum stop the work
Tyler –
Don’t buy this garbage
Spend more time troubleshooting this piece of crap machinery than it actually spends cleaning. DO NOT BUY.
Sharon Adams –
Hate it
Cleaning house. Had to empty dust bin 7 times before done. Not because floor was dirty. Barely fills dust pan and wants emptied. Mop isn’t any better. Just wipes lightly. Doesn’t clean. Also have a shark. So much better.
Pinkyblee –
DO NOT BUY THIS!
I had a Roomba years ago, when they first came on the market… it worked great, but only lasted maybe a year… so never bought another one. Bought this one… and, WHAT A NIGHTMARE. It can take days and days to charge. I may have to plug/unplug/plug the charging until over and over and over and over… just to get the ridiculous light to come. I have to pick up and place down the onto the plate numerous times just to try to get it to charge… and then it just quits. It does this even if I can get it to work and it docks itself. THIS IS A NIGHTMARE and Roomba refuses to help DO NOT BUY THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great robot vacuum for laminate floors
We recently bought a house with all laminate floors that shows every piece of dirt, mud, dust, etc. We decided we wanted a robot vacuum to help out with cleaning as we have 2 kids, a cat, and a large dog. After much research, review reading in our price point and a current sale, we decided on the iRobot Roomba Combo j5. We haven’t used the mop portion because we have so much to mop, I feel I would be spending more time trying to swap out the mop water than I would if I just got out a mop and bucket and mopped myself. With that being said, I use our iRobot, which our family named “Chompy,” a few times a week. Upon first setting up, the app asked to start mapping, which took about an hour or so for our downstairs floorplan. After the mapping was done, I was able to create “rooms” on the app, assign favorite jobs, and place areas that needed extra cleaning or areas to avoid. Creating these “rooms” was very beneficial because I can assign Chompy to clean the whole house OR one of my favorite jobs which combines rooms to vacuum one after another, ie Master Bedroom and Master Bathroom or Kitchen and Laundry Room. We have a cat, 2 kids, and a very large dog that sheds a lot. It picks up their hair very well, but doesn’t get in corners, but Chompy is round and cannot get into a square corner but gets very close, so I go through the house with a regular vacuum to get the areas Chompy cannot reach like behind doors, around the dogs’ crate (my dog tries to eat Chompy if it gets too close), behind trash cans, etc. I love that Chompy vacuums the perimeter and vacuums in straight lines so that the entire room gets vacuumed not just certain areas. Every week or two I do flip Chompy over and unscrew the rollers and brush to get any hair caught (mine and my daughters) from them so it keeps running smoothly. I love that it gives suggestions if it notices an area that has more dirt than normal, asks if you want to do 1 or 2 passes, and will take pictures and send them through the app if there is an obstacle, in which you can click to avoid that area next time or if it is temporary and then gives you the option to tidy up where that obstacle was…like my cat likes to stand in the way of Chompy so it’ll take a picture of her and I can click tidy up and it’ll go back to that area and vacuum if I request it to do so. I love that I can have this vacuum when I’m not home or finish up while I’m leaving the house and the app notifies me when Chompy is done, so I can assign another room or just review to make sure no obstacles were detected. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a decent priced robot vacuum, as it does a great job and keeps me from having to drag out the vacuum a few times a week with our crazy schedules.

Low power battery
I bought this to replace my old Roomba, that worked great for 5 years. Thought the mapping would be helpful. From the beginning, it couldn’t make a circuit of the whole downstairs without charging midway through. It has expensive parts that get clogged up easily. More technology doesn’t necessarily equal better performance, I wish I would’ve stayed with the less expensive option. This is only 18 months old and now is showing an error 26, which equals a $110 part. DON’T BUY THIS MODEL
Michelle Stephens –
Disappointed
After only 3 cleanings I had to call customer service to help me out because it stopped working and they told me that I need a new cleaning head module. I can’t believe I need to replace parts after having it less than a week. Hopefully after I get the new part it will work again. Customer service was very nice and helpful so I’m grateful for that.
MC1053 –
A pretty good little helper
This does a pretty good job at doing the daily sweeping / vacuuming of our hardwood floors, which is a daily task with 3 kids and 2 dogs. It probably won’t replace a good once over a week with a manual vacuum, but an awesome time saver for working parents!
Jordan Packer –
So frustrating
We had off-brand versions of robot vacuum cleaners for several years and they did okay, but we finally decided to bite the bullet and go with the official big-brand name, the best of the best in the robot vacuum business, Roomba. Unfortunately, this was a mistake. I didn’t think it was possible to have such a frustrating experience with a vacuum. Even when this thing is working perfectly, it doesn’t seem to do as good of a job as my other cheap vacuums did in the past. He can barely pick up crumbs in my kitchen, and usually just spreads them around and tosses them into new places. The mopping function on it is a joke. It would be more effective to just tie a damp paper towel to the back of the thing and let it run around for an hour and a half. But then, less than a month into using it, I start getting notifications that my scheduled cleaning job completed 2 seconds after starting (see screenshot). This happened several times a week for several weeks and I finally reached out to customer service about it. They put me through several painful weeks of trying every possible resest/restart/reprogramming imaginable and the problem still kept coming back. Eventually I convinced them to send me a new one, as I was convinced that I had received a lemon. Got the new product and set it up, and everything seemed fine… When not TWO WEEKS LATER it started happening again!!! I’ve been hesitant to even reach out to customer service this time, because I don’t want to go through the painful and lengthy troubleshooting process all over again. I just want my money back so I can go buy one of those trusty non-name-brand vacuums again!
Antoinette Bustamante –
Horrible for the price
Price of junk, won’t dock to charge, and needs to be balanced by hand to get it to charge. Not very efficient for the price! I will be returning this! Very disappointed with customer service at roomba, talked to three different service agents, between email and phone. It was like jumping through hoops with them, they wanted pictures and video proof of its issues. I finally returned it got a replacement was great for a day, and back to the same issues. Didn’t even bother customer service with roomba this time. I got an email from them asking if I was studied with my service and I’d I still needed help almost a month after I talked with them returned the vacuum and got a replacement in that time! In my opinion worst product ever for the price. I will say when it worked and actually moved around the house without saying it was on a ledge with no ledge it was great! I had high hopes for this but landed up being truly disappointed

Best on Hard Floors
This vacuum is a dream, as long as you have mostly all hard floors. Doesn’t do well on the rugs and carpet, unfortunately. It seems to just gather dog hair together into clumps and leaves them all around. But I love it for my hard floors and it seems to get most of the dirt and dog hair in the middle of the week when I am too busy to push vacuum.
cintia falck –
Not worth it! Don’t spend your money on it
Do not expend your money on this. It’s expensive, the mop doesn’t work properly and begins to drop water since you charge it, it doesn’t have a control over the water dispenser, so basically since you fill it it’s dropping water everywhere and the “mop” is terrible! I bought it on December but began to use it since March 10 because I hade another brand that don’t mop, but I regret the change. Since the beginning is errors after errors, los Wi-Fi, gets stuck, and the base charger is NOT working properly after a month!
Julia L. Boston –
Product will not charge without much manipulation. Extremely aggravating.
I’ve had several roombas. This model will not charge easy nor stay charged. There was only a 2 week return window. I’m stuck with a faulty product. Cancelled prime account.
Kindle Customer –
Constant Attention Needed
I have been so incredibly disappointed in this product. It needs Constant attention and cleaning. After cleaning it sometimes functions for just a few seconds or a few minutes before claiming the rollers need to be cleaned again. I had a previous Roomba I purchased around 2014 and it was Significantly better then this experience has been.
Kevin Aguirre –
Powerful little helper
I LOVE my roomba, its so helpful roomba starts cleaning and does a very good job it has a mop function which makes it even better. It has a powerful vacuum suction but if you have a lot of hair you will need to clean the rudders every so often because the hair gets tangled up and can slow its functions. You can program it to clean in certain areas you want to focus on. It has really big monster wheels so it came drive over many things. I highly recommend this product, I was very hesitant at first but I decided to get it and it has been very helpful to have around the floors are always clean now.

I’m happy with this Rooma J5
It works as advertised. My only problem is it was supposed to be a two day delivery but it took 10 day to get it. Call customer service to get more information, the person I talk to was no help didn’t even get an apology.
klea –
It only worked two days
Buying this vacuum cleaner turned out to be a huuuuuuge headache for me. I spend a lot of money on amazon but I had never paid so much for a vacuum cleaner. I have two kids and a dog and decided that I splurge because I needed the help. I was really excited, the reviews were really good, but it seems I got a lemon and the return process unlike anything else on amazon has proved to be a huge headache as well. I called technical support, and the could help to solove the issue. They even sent a follow up email recommending I unscrew and open the back of the Roomba and at this point (it only worked two days) I don’t want to open it. I would rather return. However, the return policy, which I should have scrutinized before buying says it needs to be unused in original box. The refund might be zero if used. Really? Because I couldn’t have seen that it does work if I didn’t use it but I did not pay close to $400 for two days. That is weird. Also, I can’t seem to fit the robot back in the box neatly as it came. I don’t want to get damaged. I would prefer to return to amazon or ups open box because I worry about the correct pacakging but despite several attempts as well as several chats and phone call with amazon customer service, I can’t change the method of return. I thin I am stuck with a very expensive useless machine that does nothing but select dust it was supposed to help me clean and I have sunk a lot of money , a lot of time in this for nothing. I am very, very unhappy with this purchase. Total let down both with the machine and the return process. It may have been just this particular one because I read the excellent prior reviews but nonetheless, It does not do what it is supposed to do and definitely this return glitch has never happened to me with amazon but here we are. Very frustrating experience.
Aruna R. –
Worst robot ever!
This is the worst robot ever. After it does it’s work I have to clean all the uncleaned areas manually. It won’t go everywhere even after mapping multiple times. I have used other robots before and this is the worst one ever. Initially I thought I had not done the mapping right, so kept trying multiple times. But I am at my wits end now cleaning every day after it’s work -which it is supposed to do. I am planning to return it.
TimmyB –
Worked for 1 time…then Error 26
Worked great one time around the house. Launched 2nd time, didn’t get 3 ft from the base. Did EVERY ONE of the things to clear the error….5 times, 3 hrs….tried it all. Will return tomorrow. Error 26
Elizabeth –
Harder to use dust receiver than older model.
I do not want to use Alexa so the mopping feature is not accessible. I do like the cleaning power so far with the main machine.

Do not buy this
This is sent to a seller they steal the products and A broke used product is out in an old dirty ripped up box and sent to you. This won’t even charge. This is horrible.

Awful: Regret this purchase.
I was so excited at first but honestly this robot is awful and I find myself more and more annoyed by it and using it less. Smart? Hardly. Learns your home and gets smarter? That’s a laugh. I have a large 2 bedroom apartment with an open concept and it still goes over the same area over and over and gets caught and stuck all the time. This despite the fact that I have added those areas in the app as areas to avoid. It’s dumb. It’s annoying. It doesn’t vacuum well and I wish I never bought it to be honest. Just spend less on a decent shark vacuum and do it yourself. The future is not here.

Good vacuum but the mop is totally useless
It’s a huge improvement from the previous version of rumba that I had from 10 years ago no question. It cleans much faster because it’s not random but cleans in rows. My main issues are: * Mop is useless. Leaves spots everywhere that would easily be swept up by a wet paper towel. * The dust bin gets clogged all the time with dog hair. The hair gets stuck before the bin. I need to clean it out with a shop vac all the time. * Sometimes doesn’t seat well on the charger and then completely loses its charge. There’s no notification that it’s an issue. Then you go to use it and it’s dead.

Error code and charging issues
I have had 4 irobot vacuums. When I got this one I hoped it would be better than the last model. I was disappointed. In less than a month it would not charge. I reset it several times. Then it would not undock (if it took a charge) and then it reported being next to a cliff. I sent it back and was sent a replacement. It worked for a few weeks and the same issues came up. Would not take a charge, drop off error would prevent it from moving from the dock. I was very frustrated. Sadly after years of being an irobot fan, I have moved on to another brand with lidar which is amazing.

Good vacuum and a J7
There is no actual J5 so they send you a J7 vacuum, this isnt the J7+ with the raised bar floor cleaner, it has the exchangeable water tank, i never tried the floor washing but i did the vacuum, a couple slight hiccups mapping but it learns each outing, It has decent suction and will carry you over until you get your upgrade vacuum out

Just what we needed
Honestly, the mop feature is not that great. its more like a Swiffer. it does not scrub. if you get the mop feature you do not get the self emptying option. I wished i would have just got the vacuum to have the self emptying option. the vacuum is awesome however. were always on the go and every time this thing runs it pick up a lot. So if you want a good mop go with the straight mops robots those actually scrub. if you want just the vacuum don’t get the mop feature, it does clean it just don’t deep clean.

What’s better then a new Roomba?
Roomba’s are a godsend. Really amazing technology that cleans your house and saves you time. We’ve had one since the 1st release ( it’s still running). I bought this as the price was good and eventually that other one is going to die. It’s more than a decade old. This one is great. Has a few more features. But essentially, it’s a floor cleaner and vacuum. I would especially recommend this for someone who has asthma.

Goes off in the middle of the night to readjust.
I moved it to make room for a shelf. Then it complained its not connected. Fine, whatever, we’re mid construction anyways, we’ll run it soon when debris is moved and it will be charged/ready for dust clean up. Damn product tries to readjust itself at 2am with the vacuum running and everything. By its own specs it is in the middle of the house, thus everyone heard it. I am a light sleeper, wth was that?? Is there a way to power it off? No, it will likely beep again.

Messed up sensor
The bin was empty but I would receive updates saying it was full. I called the help line and did everything they asked but it did not help. I sent it back.

Wonderful
This little machine is the most advanced cleaning machine one could imagine. It cleans your house and if you leave a place blocked by clutter it takes a picture of it and sends it to you. Amazing 👍😇

Major issue just a few months into ownership
Less than three months into ownership of this machine, I am already on the phone with customer service about a problem with this Roomba, despite having followed all troubleshooting steps supplied by iRobot. (Problem, BTW, is that it will only vacuum for a few minutes before giving a “Bin Full” error message when bin is nowhere near full.) The Roomba I purchased in the late teens never gave me trouble like this. I suspect quality control has gone way down as bells and whistles on the machines have increased.

One of the most annoying products I own!
Constant bin full messages due to either undersized bin or dirty sensors. Sensors get dirty easily so constant bin full messages when it isn’t full. Gets stuck on same furniture again and again. Mixes up rooms. Initial mapping was a frustrating process. Battery life is mediocre. Sometimes disconnects from internet for no reason. I give it 2 stars because at least it still works after 4 years, which is something.

What’s not to love
This vacuum is so much more powerful than my last robot vacuum. It even picked up all the glitter from Christmas wrapping paper that was all over my house after opening Christmas gifts. I was super surprised.

Caution – Customer Support is a challenge
I have had many iRobot products over the years, and I have always been happy…until now. I received my J5 Combo for Christmas. After using for a couple of weeks, discovered that it had 2 defects. The side brush wasn’t working and the wet mop bin wasn’t being recognized by the unit. Once I was connected to a rep, I was on the phone for an hour doing everything they asked to prove to them that it was truly broken. They finally agreed that 2 parts needed to be replaced and they would be shipped immediately. I waited approximately 10 days to get 1 of the 2 parts. When I called to find out the status of the other part, the craziness began again despite already going through hoops once. The rep asked if he could call me back after talking to his team. Instead of calling me back, he asked for a photo of the serial number, which I had already provided on the previous call, and a VIDEO of me swapping the bins. I tried to send both, but the video is too big to email, so I sent just the photo and an explanation. I’m still waiting to hear back with a half functioning unit. And now they’ve taken so long to resolve that I can’t even return this unit to Amazon!!!

I bought a cheaper version a few yrs back, I thought it was comparable, I was so wrong. This is a much better machine and works great

Completely awesome!
Wow. This thing is phenomenal, we run it 3 days a week and use the mop on Saturdays. I have not had to vacuum, sweep or mop since we got it.
