Under the Microscope: Evaluating the Product’s Pluses and Minuses
The Uniden R3 radar detector comes highly recommended by several users, as it is easy to install and use. Its long-range detection has been particularly praised. An anonymous user expressed satisfaction with the product stating, “Love this radar detector! Very easy to install and use. It has a really long range as well.” The product also features an advanced false alert filtering system, ensuring minimal false positives after adjusting some settings. This has helped users gain more confidence and reliability in the product. A user named Matthew T. confirms this by saying, “there are minimal false positives after changing a couple of quick settings.”
Other highlights include the device’s clear and bright display, which makes it easy to read even under bright sunlight. It also provides an impressive detection range, with one user reporting detection from as far as 1.5 miles out, even with multiple obstructions. The product has also been described as a good value for money, with a user named Harrison noting that, “based on its price, I think it is a good value for the options provided.”
Despite its impressive features, the Uniden R3 radar detector has some downsides. One of the most common complaints is about the product’s lifespan and durability. JNAragon mentioned that his product’s screen went blank just a few days after purchase and he had to return it. Similarly, a user named Dave B. complained about the display screen starting to show little lines after just two months of use, with the screen barely functioning eight months in.
Other users have reported issues with the sound. Michael Clark shared his disappointment when the sound on his device quit working three years after purchase. Similarly, Smartshopper1233 expressed dissatisfaction with the product’s speaker failing past the warranty period. A few users also complained about the product not being able to remember when it was muted from a previous time.
Another downside noted is the device’s false alarm frequency. While it does an excellent job in rural settings, in city settings with lots of businesses with automatic doors, it tends to give a lot of false alarms. A user named Megan Bryant shared this concern, “This one may be great for a rural setting, but in a city with lots of businesses with automatic doors, it will drive you crazy.”

The most helpful positive feedback Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2023 by JDRanger, and is titled “Good detector. Small display”
I’ve been using my R3 for about three weeks. I went with this model over the R7 because I didn’t really see the value of the arrows and the higher price. It could be a real headache to set up but if you go to YouTube and enter “ Uniden R3 setup”there’s a guy named “Vortex” that does an excellent job of explaining things. Even better, he has a link to his webpage that lists exactly how to set things up. I’m really only scanning KA band and Lidar. The alarm goes off about a mile from the police car and it’s easy to hear with my top down and my music cranking. The display is small and kind of hard to see. You can’t make out any detail in direct sunlight but that’s par for the course. I’m using the two small suction cups and it’s staying put. I’m assuming the larger one even works better but it’s pretty large and I haven’t used it. Overall I would definitely recommend the R3.

Works amazing!
Took under 5 minutes to install, lots better than my cobra. definitely would recommend the R3!
JD3rdPig –
Excellent
Great long distance detection. Only thing missing are arrows… for that you’d need to get the R7 or R8. But for the price, this provides excellent reliable radar protection.
Johnson Yarbrough –
Pretty good
This works pretty good but extreme long range is a huge stretch. Long range is a stretch as well. The suction cups are garbage and stop working a few months after purchase. To update the firmware is like trying to solve a Rubik’s cube in 30’s. It’s very difficult to do

Lasted a year. Has went out 2 twice now.
Lasted a year sent back to get fixed. Worked for another year and broke again, same issue. wont power up by both plug ins. I traded my buddy a junk Cobra that cost 60 bucks for a detail seat he’s had that thing for 5 years and still works like brand new I’m kinda irritated I spent over $300 on this!

Not compatible with new vehicles.
This device requires a 12v cigarette lighter style plug. newer vehicles do not have this. I guess I’ll put this in my other old car that i hardly use…. it’s not what i bought it for though. FYI check your vehicle. most only come with USB or USB-c plugs in them.
Chiriquí Panamá –
It does work in Panamá
The media could not be loaded. It can pick up the radar signal, only if the gun is on and pointing at your direction, more then 2 miles away. It works in a straight road and not on curves It has saved me from getting spending tickets 7 times already

Very good and accurate
Will save on red light and speed cameras – very good worth the money

Doesn’t detect very well
Not sure what’s wrong with my unit, but doesn’t seem to be doing a very good job of detecting. I’ve passed by several fixed traps on the side of the road or overhead and it just doesn’t sound at all.

Over 5 years and counting
Works as intended and has lasted over 5 years so far. The mount I have slips during weather changes, so the cord gets pulled on sometimes, and I’m just now considering replacing the cord alone. Love this and 100% recommend it to anyone looking for a radar detector.
N. T. –
Long range indeed
The media could not be loaded. This radar detector is the best bang for your buck if you dial it in correctly, it will definitely detect Ka from like a half away. It saves my a** countless times so I will definitely by for my other vehicles.

DOES NOT WORK
I had this mounted properly and couldn’t even pick up a laser detector less than a quarter mile away. Such a POS product.

The best radar detector ever
This is great! It gets waves from miles away! A must-have item if you travel a lot.

The King of Budget Detectors
This detector provides some of the best performance available despite being at a budget price. It’s one of the most well rounded detectors, an easy recommendation to make to anyone, and the baseline that every detector strives to meet. If you’re looking at a cheaper detector, it is better to just save a bit more and get this one instead. Range: The R3 has some of the best range out of all detectors, competing against even high end detectors that cost $400-$500, and sometimes even custom installed systems. In tough terrains, worst case scenarios, it can still give up to almost half a mile of range (up to a few miles on open roads). Way more than enough time to react to the alerts. Responsiveness: The R3 will alert you at speeds faster than half a second to ensure you are alerted as fast as possible to possible signals. This is especially important to give you as much time as it can to react to alerts and in some cases when you only get a small blip of detection. Compact size: The R3 has a stealthy compact size that makes it easy to fit anywhere in all types of cars, keeping it hidden while still keeping a nice aesthetic. The mute button is also comfortably placed on the front of the detector in the most optimal spots. Programmability: Custom options are easy to program to tailor the detector to how you drive and what area you drive in to max out performance against specifically what your trip requires.

Best bang for your buck
This product honestly is a life changer. Highly encourage if you want a radar that works and well and don’t wanna break the bank. Catches police all the time, and came in clutch a lot. After a long amount of use, still the same as I bought it. Love it

Incredible features and functionality. Could be louder
This is my 3rd radar detector and this one has, by far, the longest range. It has just the right amount of features without all of the online updating required by some. One downside, it could be louder. If you’re like me and like to play music at a reasonably loud level, it can be hard to hear the alerts. The loudest setting could be louder.
oldbaritone –
Terrific detector
I got this as an upgrade to my older detector. It’s great. Sensitivity is awesome and features are helpful. Mark lets me tell it to ignore the store motion detectors but alert to unexpected signals. I’m thrilled with it.

Worked for 2 years but then….
Spent a good deal of time trying to figure out why there was NO SOUND at all from the unit. Set back to factory default. Checked programming…. nothing. It appears this is an unfortunate known issue with the product. Perhaps in the meantime they have changed the speaker, which is expensive to replace. Another displeased owner found a cheap replacement online but not the same quality or volume capability, so I changed my “overall rating” to reflect this defective model.

Radar detects them before they detect you.
Performance is excellent, the quality is top tier and yes this unit lets you know when radar surveillance is being used long before you will make visual contact. I would highly recommend this product.

Easy to setup and use, very sensitive
This may be my most favorite purchase of all time. I have found this unit to be incredibly useful, has a long detection range, seems to be very sensitive and accurate. Set up was easy. What I find most useful is the fact that the detection chirp starts well in advance of visually being able to identify the source iiof the radar, which is very useful when driving. I liked it so much that I bought another for a family member as well, and we have had no problems with either unit. Well worth the price. Would highly recommend.

Great Radar Detector
This is my first radar detector, so I had to do some research online before buying. After 1 week I absolutely love this radar detector. The R3 performs extremely well IMO. Initial alerts chirp slowly. Chirps get faster as you get closer to the source. When the chirps hit a solid tone you can usually figure out the location of the source. IMO there’s a sufficient amount of time from the first alert chirp to the steady tone to allow you to check your speed. You can set different tones for different bands of radar which is super helpful too. There are lots of settings that can be adjusted which is nice, but it also means that it will take some time to familiarize yourself with the detector. The best feature IMO is the GPS which allows me to flag spots with known false alerts by pressing “mute” twice, so that the detector doesn’t alarm at that spot. The suction cup mounting bracket is well designed. I can mount it quickly and release it quickly with a press of a button. I wish it came with a hard wire install kit though because the worst feature is the included power. It’s the standard coiled wire that plugs into the 12v cig lighter. It’s just not aesthetically pleasing to have a power cord hanging in the middle of the windshield.

Works very good
This thing has already saved me $$$ within a month of having it. It really works. The K band is a bit iffy at times with a ton of false alerts but the Ka band is EXTREMELY accurate. Definitely an essential car purchase to stay careful out there 😏

great radar detector
I like the different options and the ability to mute common non-law enforcement radars. Comes with three separate mounts. I used the single suction cup and it works great. I definitely would recommend a mirror wire tap instead of the obtrusive long cable.

High Quality
Very nice, high quality, easy to use and easy to understand instructions. Color change is awesome as u can match it to your interior Don’t think twice by saving yourself thousands for less than $300

Saved me from multiple speeding tickets.
Got this for my 2004 Corvette. I’m drive responsibly and take safety seriously but I like going a little fast when I can, safely of course. This thing picks up radar pointed at you from about half a mile away, even more on very flat stretches. I just leave it on highway mode and tolerate the false positives for the extra protection but it has city mode and it’s insanely adjustable as far as setting it up to avoid false positive detections from automatic doors, red light radars, blind spot sensors, etc. The GPS functions are nice to set up a reminder of speed trap hotspots and I like having the MPH, elevation, and compass readout options. IMO this is the sweet spot in terms of cost. No super fancy display but you get about the best detection range money can buy and a ton of adjustability in terms of sensitivity, sound, and display. Maybe spend more on a fancier model if you’re doing cannonball run type activities but for somebody that just needs a warning when they’re going 15 or 20 over it’s perfect.

Screen went blank after 6 years of minimal use.
It did work well before that.
