How Does the Wireless android auto car adapter Measure Up? Assessing Its Gains and Losses
Effortless and Reliable Connection: Many users, including Bill Ledbetter and TB, praise the Motorola MA1 Wireless Android Auto Car Adapter for its “Easy to install and use” capability, offering a seamless and wireless connection to the car’s display. Bill found the small size advantageous as it allowed him to “hide it in the storage compartment in the dash”, while TB was relieved to “no longer have to manually unlock my phone to use Android Auto”, finding it connected “flawlessly” every time after an initial setup.
High Compatibility and Convenience: Users like Khaled Elajam and Dave experienced consistent connectivity, with Khaled stating it “connects every single time with no drops or lag”, and Dave confirming that it “works perfectly” with multiple vehicles. This suggests the device’s compatibility with a range of car models and its reliability for maintaining a stable connection, significantly improving the driving experience by offering a cable-free solution.
Enhanced User Experience: Customers such as Danny and S. Roe found the device to significantly enhance their in-car tech interaction. Danny noted it was “well worth it for how well it works. Bulletproof!”, and S. Roe expressed delight at the convenience, stating, “It was so easy getting in the car later and voila…connected.” These experiences underline the adapter’s value in delivering a hassle-free user experience.
Connection and Durability Issues: Some users report connection stability problems and a limited lifespan. Jorge Andres Arenas describes his adapter as having turned into “just a brick” after 8 months of use, while Booger Goo experienced it “stops working after a year”. These reviews raise concerns about the device’s reliability over time and its susceptibility to connectivity issues.
Inconvenience and Compatibility Challenges: Despite the positive aspects, there are reports of the adapter not functioning as expected for all users. JR finds it “useless for drives under 15 min” due to the slow startup time, while K9dopecop points out a significant limitation, stating the device “requires VPN to be disabled”, which might be a deal-breaker for privacy-conscious users or those who rely on VPNs for work.
The stars speak of…
Opinions about this product were divided in such a proportion among the buyers.
After issues with the initial setup I was going to return it. Gave it another try glad I did. Work really well the setup take a little bite of time to get going but once it does your good. I do have an occasional and sort time issue when it losses Bluetooth connection with phone will reconnect quickly and your back a running. I would recommend that if you are going to get watch a few videos online to help with setup and be patient.
Works great when it finally connects, unfortunately i live in a small town and am at my destination 95% of the time before it finally connects…….useless for drives under 15 min.
Understanding More: Questions Answered and Explained
What is the Motorola MA1, and how does it work? The Motorola MA1 is a wireless car adapter that allows you to connect your smartphone to your car’s display without the need for cables. It’s a direct plug-in USB adapter that uses Wi-Fi to communicate with your phone, enabling you to access Android Auto wirelessly. Once plugged into your car’s USB port, the adapter pairs with your phone, and Android Auto starts automatically when you start your car, giving you access to navigation, music, and more.
Is the adapter compatible with all cars and smartphones? The adapter is designed to work with any car that has Android Auto support and a USB port. However, it is important to note that the car must have Android Auto capabilities. As for smartphones, it works with most Android phones that support Android Auto. It is recommended to check the compatibility with your specific car model and smartphone before purchasing.
How do I set up the adapter in my car?Setting up the adapter is straightforward. You plug it into your car’s USB port designated for Android Auto, pair it with your smartphone via Wi-Fi, and follow any on-screen instructions. The device typically pairs automatically once the initial setup is done, so you don’t need to reconnect manually every time.
Does the Motorola MA1 adapter require a power source? The adapter is powered through the USB port in your car. There’s no need for an external power source or battery. As long as your car is running or the accessory mode is on, the adapter will be powered and functional.
Can I still use my car’s USB port for charging while using the adapter? While the adapter occupies the USB port it’s plugged into, it typically does not prevent you from charging your phone. Many cars have multiple USB ports, so you can use another port for charging. If there is only one port, some users opt for a USB splitter or hub to retain charging capabilities alongside the adapter’s functionality.
What happens if I receive a call while using the adapter? When you receive a call, Android Auto will handle it just like it would with a wired connection. The call interface will appear on your car’s screen, and you can answer using the car’s controls. Your music or navigation will pause or lower in volume, and resume once the call is finished.
Is there any latency or delay when using the adapter for navigation or music? The adapter is designed to offer a seamless and responsive experience. There should be minimal latency or delay when using apps for navigation or music streaming. However, the performance can be influenced by factors like the smartphone’s processing power, the car’s head unit capabilities, and the quality of the Wi-Fi connection between the adapter and the phone.

Constant disconnects
It constantly disconnects no matter what phone is being used. The same devices work perfectly fine while plugged in.

Worked great, but like many other people experienced, died after about one year
Worked great while it lasted, connected quick and stayed connected. Purchased in late Dec 2023 and it quit connecting to my Samsung S9+ around Jan 2025. It will not pair with the phone. Tried resetting it, changing different settings on the phone and the Honda head unit. I have been trying a lot of suggestions from people online for months, but nothing has worked. I miss the ease of not having to plug in the phone every time I get into the car, guess I’ll have to find another solution.

great just unplug when not in use
product for the most part is excellent. Just unplug it when not in use, it drains the car battery. I discovered this after a year of using it.

Worth every penny! Motorola never disappoints!!

Perfect
I have a 2019 GMC Sierra, in 2020, wireless Android Auto was available, of course. Not sure why I didnt buy this sooner. It works flawlessly. [Knocking on wood] It connects and music starts playing by the time I clip in my seat belt… 10 seconds? I think it’s already connecting when I hit unlock walking up to my truck. I’ve been using this for about 6 days now, no glitches, no lag, no issues. I’ve even started my car, connected, then turned my car off and immediately turned back on… connected immediately. Honestly, the small things in life, like having this auto connect Android Auto is awesome. I will update this review if I have issues, but as of now, I’m happy! I just bought a second one for my close friend as a gift.

Guaranteed to fail
Don’t buy this. My first one failed just before the warranty expired. They replaced it no issue. The replacement just failed and lasted only about half as long. Clearly there’s an issue with the hardware. Reddit/web is full of complaints about how frequently these fail.

Do no buy
I bought this adapter 4 months ago. At first it worked just fine, with some minor connectivity issues but a week ago it just stopped working on my Mazda CX-5 2024. I tried everything to fix this, even contacted Motorola Support but no one answered. I do not recommend this product at all.

Easy install
This took about 2 seconds to get it going on my 2022 Chevy Colorado.

Works great but has a short lifespan!
I have tried several and this one works. The problem is that it only works for about a year and I have to replace it. This is my 3rd device. The first lasted 13 months and the second lasted 10 months. When it fails, the Blue Tooth connection fails and the phone is constantly trying to reconnect to Android Auto.
AndyG –
Worked
These work great just beware of how much cellular data it uses, when maps are enabled.
Amber Whitcomb –
Good Product!
Works great and connects seamlessly. Just what I needed!
Lee Hamrick –
They just work. 5 stars!
I’ve been using these in a few different vehicles over the last two years and they have worked flawlessly. I do have issues with the infotainment system itself, but it’s not caused by these adapters.
Amazon Customer –
worked, then didnt
worked great for 8 months, then stopped connecting. Id expect a little better longevity from Motorola.
Nio –
Sounds good, doesn’t work
If only I could give this 0 star. Worked for the first time then just stopped connecting altogether. No amount of troubleshooting would make it reconnect again. Please do not buy this
Shawn –
Do these things have an expiration date?
I”ve bought 2 of these and each one died after about a year and a half. It works well at first and then just dies. Now just another piece of e-waste.
Tommy –
Trash
Complete garbage disconnects all the time and will not reconnect half the time and sometimes will not reconnect at all without factory resetting and setting up all over again
Joe –
Worked great, until it just died
I bought this for my car because it wasn’t able to do wireless android auto. It has been working for almost 2 years, then it just died. Not sure if there’s any warranty, but I’m not happy.

Stopped working after 6 months
Worked great for 6 months and then just died. Too expensive for 6 months use.

Device keeps on skipping music
It only lasted 2 months before it started to skip music and make it unbearable to listen. Don’t buy it.
Corkscrew –
Works great when it’s working. Died after two months.
I love this device when it works. Reliable Android Auto over wireless with a quick reconnect time when it inevitably crashes. Right around the two month mark and it stopped working. Android Auto connects for about 3 seconds before crashing, and continues to work, crash, work, crash like that until I disconnect the device.
Erik Pena –
Was pretty good at first…
Work fine at first. Would disconnect here and there after awhile but never for more than a moment. Until today, dead. Really don’t want to pay for any one. Lasted about 6 months.
Amazon Customer –
Stopped working
Only had it for a couple months. It’s stopped working and won’t connect anymore. Do not recommend. It connects by WiFi and it keeps telling me the password is wrong.

Very Poor unit I do not recommend
Unit setup is ok and it works fairly well when it works, but it seem to be highly susceptible to temperature change, Winter Cold has a negative effect, Summer Heat has a negative effect. If you decide to buy iot NEVER leave it in the car overnight or during the day. Take it with you everywhere it is very temperamental.

Good product but …
So I bought this 2 years ago, i think Jan of 2023. Very easy to use and worked perfectly on my Kia Forte and Google Pixel 9 phone. The connection was seamless and it connects everytime I start the car. Everything worked fine until this month of 2025. It stopped connecting to my phone. Went online and tried all the troubleshooting tips but to no luck. The device seems to be stuck on connecting mode. And when it does connect to my phone, it turns off. So I guess for me 2 years was the max lifespan for this device.
Jared –
Purchased twice, failed twice
I purchased this device twice and both times it failed. First one lasted 2 years, 2nd one latest 1 year. Probably will not buy anymore. The device itself was easy setup and no hassle, until it stopped working.

Stable and fast with S24+.
Used it for a year now in my Mazda MX-30. Works great. Almost no lag with Samsung S24+.

Worked Great For A Year, Now Frequent Disconnects
Using it for a 2020 Acura MDX It worked great for exactly a year, now it disconnects frequently. I suspect it’s a heat issue as it started on a long trip. I was using the velcro to secure it vertically inside of a console. I didn’t want it to hang and put pressure on my USB port. Anyway, it was great until now and I’m replacing it with a tiny plug in version that doesn’t hang. If that gives me any issues, I would buy this one again!
Mocha –
Doesn’t work well with Rav4
I got this to utilize with my 2021 Rav4. The ’19 – ’21 Ravs have Apple Car Play and Android Auto but it’s not wireless. This was supposed to make both those wireless, but neither work well. It might initially sync but music and navigation will randomly cut out. You can unplug it and it’ll resume after about 30 secs but it’s just distracting enough to be a nuisance.
Tony Hegner –
What I wanted.
Everything I wanted it to be. But, your phone is running in the background. Short trips is fine but on longer ones you still need to plug in your phone.
Brian S. –
Critical design flaw means this will likely fail on you soon.
This worked OK, while it was working. It did tend to get hot, especially with its USB port being in my center console with limited air flow. The critical flaw is that built-in flexible USB cord. There’s no reasonable way to plug this in inside a car without that cord getting flexed around while you drive. Mine failed one year after purchase, and because the USB cord is built in, it’s now useless and likely not reparable. I replaced it with a relatively new cheapo brand, half the price, that has a rigid “thumbdrive-like” form factor. Not only does the other one interfere much less with my center console, because it’s rigid the dongle itself won’t fail just from going over too many speed bumps. You can still relocate the other design with an extension, and when that inevitably fails it’s just a replacement USB cord, not the whole dongle. So, I would avoid this one and only go for a wireless Android Auto adapter that does NOT feature a built-in flexible cord. I think I got about 1/3 of the price I paid out of this one before it died. And when it suddenly did, I was out on the road and left suddenly without map navigation mid-drive, not good.

Wireless android auto
Works great on my 2020 harley davidson sgs
Shawn –
Trusted brand and consistently works.
Honestly just get this one. It works and is consistent. Its also a name brand that has been around and isn’t some off-name brand that might be a piece of trash. I’ve got two of these now and I will never buy another off-namw brand ever again. They just work and at the end of the day you just want carplay and android auto to just work.
Darryl Harris –
Very laggy but it works.
This would be a perfect solution for vehicles that don’t have Bluetooth Android Auto. However, it can be incredibly laggy at times.
Jasmine Vinoya –
Terrible waste of plastic
does not work kept disconnecting

WORKS IN MY CAR
I BOUGHT THIS FOR MY CAR AS MY PHONE HAD TO BE PLUGGED IN FOR MY ANDROID AUTO TO WORK. WITH THIS MAKING THAT OPTION WIRELESS, IT IS PERFECT BECAUSE IT CONNECTS AS SOON AS MY CAR IT TURNED ON. THE ONLY ISSUE I HAVE IS THAT IT WILL RANDOMLY CUT OUT. I AM NOT SURE WHY IT DOES IT AND IT IS NOT VERY OFTEN BUT I ONLY NEED TO UNPLUG IT AND PLUG IT BACK IN IF THEIS DOES HAPPEN. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT.

Works great on 2020 Ford Edge Titanium
Had it installed……up and running in 10 minutes. Now within 30 seconds of starting the car my Samsung phone auto connects to my car with Android Auto. Got the latest Google Maps, all calls and texts come thru the car. No fumbling around trying to manually connect the phone anymore. Worth every penny. Installed on 2020 Ford Edge Titanium.

You must set it up wired with your phone first
Great item quality build, but would not work for the project I had intended it for.

Stuttering Audio and Unit Failure
These things have caused myself and my family lots of issues. I have 2, one has been replaced under warranty after 3 months of use. I have stuttering when playing music and it sounds like a skipping CD. One of the units went completely out on a short ride and would not pair nor would it factory reset. The replacement unit also skips and I am expecting it to fail within a year.

Crap!!!! Do not buy!!!! Do not buy!!!!
Stopped working after 3 months. Waste of money! Cannot believe Motorola puts their name on this. I wish zero stars was an option.

Worked for a month?
Worked great for a month, then started dropping the connection more frequently over time untill it stopped working entirely. Adhesive didn’t really stick very well either.

Works Great… For a While
Got this for my 2021 CX-9. Initially I was VERY pleased with performance until one day it started having difficulty connecting and eventually just quit. I submitted a warranty claim (which was laborious but not too much of a headache) and got a replacement. It also worked great, for a few months. Its now dead. I’ll be looking into alternatives.

Good for a while but not suitable for the long-run
I got this a year ago and it worked great for 6-7 months after that the connection would get disconnected several times during a trip and now it just doesn’t work.
NARAKI –
Loses connection. Not reliable.
It’s branded as Motorola… Hah!!! I have tried to use this every day since I got it in the mail. But I’m going to try and see if I can return this. Adds more frustration to my commute, than it is worth. PROS: Easy initial set up. Basically plug and play. CONS: Slow initial connection (On average 3+ minutes from power on to connection.) Drops signal, forcing a hard reset (Unplug and plug back in, and then see first CON) Small simple device, supposedly connect your phone to Android Auto via Bluetooth. Well after waiting for a connection between the device and my phone (on average just over 3 minutes) it works great… for about 15-20 minutes. Then it loses connection, and I have to re-start the device… Yes, unplug the USB and plug it back in… And wait another 3 minutes in total silence for the connection to be re-established. Then today… final straw… 5 minutes from start, no connection. Unplugged and re-started, 5 minutes again, still no connection… Unplugged and tried again… nothing… Grabbed the old USB cable and plugged in my phone to the car. Useless bit of tech, if it’s not reliable or consistent.

E-waste
This product is very frustrating. It works for a few weeks and then I have to fully reset it. Every couple of weeks its disconnects never to reconnect without a hard wipe and reset. Maybe I got two defective units? Somehow I doubt it. I think the truth is that this device is a hot piece of low quality e-waste. I do not recommend.
