How Does the Wireless android auto car adapter Measure Up? Assessing Its Gains and Losses
Effortless and Reliable Connection: Many users, including Bill Ledbetter and TB, praise the Motorola MA1 Wireless Android Auto Car Adapter for its “Easy to install and use” capability, offering a seamless and wireless connection to the car’s display. Bill found the small size advantageous as it allowed him to “hide it in the storage compartment in the dash”, while TB was relieved to “no longer have to manually unlock my phone to use Android Auto”, finding it connected “flawlessly” every time after an initial setup.
High Compatibility and Convenience: Users like Khaled Elajam and Dave experienced consistent connectivity, with Khaled stating it “connects every single time with no drops or lag”, and Dave confirming that it “works perfectly” with multiple vehicles. This suggests the device’s compatibility with a range of car models and its reliability for maintaining a stable connection, significantly improving the driving experience by offering a cable-free solution.
Enhanced User Experience: Customers such as Danny and S. Roe found the device to significantly enhance their in-car tech interaction. Danny noted it was “well worth it for how well it works. Bulletproof!”, and S. Roe expressed delight at the convenience, stating, “It was so easy getting in the car later and voila…connected.” These experiences underline the adapter’s value in delivering a hassle-free user experience.
Connection and Durability Issues: Some users report connection stability problems and a limited lifespan. Jorge Andres Arenas describes his adapter as having turned into “just a brick” after 8 months of use, while Booger Goo experienced it “stops working after a year”. These reviews raise concerns about the device’s reliability over time and its susceptibility to connectivity issues.
Inconvenience and Compatibility Challenges: Despite the positive aspects, there are reports of the adapter not functioning as expected for all users. JR finds it “useless for drives under 15 min” due to the slow startup time, while K9dopecop points out a significant limitation, stating the device “requires VPN to be disabled”, which might be a deal-breaker for privacy-conscious users or those who rely on VPNs for work.
The stars speak of…
Opinions about this product were divided in such a proportion among the buyers.
After issues with the initial setup I was going to return it. Gave it another try glad I did. Work really well the setup take a little bite of time to get going but once it does your good. I do have an occasional and sort time issue when it losses Bluetooth connection with phone will reconnect quickly and your back a running. I would recommend that if you are going to get watch a few videos online to help with setup and be patient.
Works great when it finally connects, unfortunately i live in a small town and am at my destination 95% of the time before it finally connects…….useless for drives under 15 min.
Understanding More: Questions Answered and Explained
What is the Motorola MA1, and how does it work? The Motorola MA1 is a wireless car adapter that allows you to connect your smartphone to your car’s display without the need for cables. It’s a direct plug-in USB adapter that uses Wi-Fi to communicate with your phone, enabling you to access Android Auto wirelessly. Once plugged into your car’s USB port, the adapter pairs with your phone, and Android Auto starts automatically when you start your car, giving you access to navigation, music, and more.
Is the adapter compatible with all cars and smartphones? The adapter is designed to work with any car that has Android Auto support and a USB port. However, it is important to note that the car must have Android Auto capabilities. As for smartphones, it works with most Android phones that support Android Auto. It is recommended to check the compatibility with your specific car model and smartphone before purchasing.
How do I set up the adapter in my car?Setting up the adapter is straightforward. You plug it into your car’s USB port designated for Android Auto, pair it with your smartphone via Wi-Fi, and follow any on-screen instructions. The device typically pairs automatically once the initial setup is done, so you don’t need to reconnect manually every time.
Does the Motorola MA1 adapter require a power source? The adapter is powered through the USB port in your car. There’s no need for an external power source or battery. As long as your car is running or the accessory mode is on, the adapter will be powered and functional.
Can I still use my car’s USB port for charging while using the adapter? While the adapter occupies the USB port it’s plugged into, it typically does not prevent you from charging your phone. Many cars have multiple USB ports, so you can use another port for charging. If there is only one port, some users opt for a USB splitter or hub to retain charging capabilities alongside the adapter’s functionality.
What happens if I receive a call while using the adapter? When you receive a call, Android Auto will handle it just like it would with a wired connection. The call interface will appear on your car’s screen, and you can answer using the car’s controls. Your music or navigation will pause or lower in volume, and resume once the call is finished.
Is there any latency or delay when using the adapter for navigation or music? The adapter is designed to offer a seamless and responsive experience. There should be minimal latency or delay when using apps for navigation or music streaming. However, the performance can be influenced by factors like the smartphone’s processing power, the car’s head unit capabilities, and the quality of the Wi-Fi connection between the adapter and the phone.

refuses to pair
It worked fine for about a month then started losing the connection, now it won’t even pair. I almost got in an accident driving my car on a highway while trying to figure out what was wrong.

Stopped working in 35 days
Worked great for a month, then died.
Mandy Chitwood –
DO NOT BUY!!!!!
All I got was 5 months before it just stopped working, total waste of money! SO disappointed!!!!!
Heather Swanson –
Works great 95% of the time
This works great in my 2022 Nissan Frontier. It was easy to set up, I just had to disconnect my truck Bluetooth for it to connect properly to the adapter. Starts up within about 30 seconds of starting the engine. It rarely cuts out (seems to be around airports and trainyards – maybe some kind of interference?) and usually reconnects in a minute or two. The included sticky pad for hiding the adapter kept falling off so I had to use a command strip. No big deal. For the on sale price I’d say it’s definitely worth it.

Cuts out randomly
I have a Pixel 7, getting it connected initially is not too difficult, and it connects automatically but slowly almost every time after setup, but it also cuts out for about a minute every 20-30 minutes. Overall, worse than wired unless you drive a lot of short trips.
Dru –
Bad quality product
This product worked for three months. Product lost connection with my phone and now it’s unable to connect to Bluetooth. I don’t recommend this product do to it not being reliable and breaking so soon.
Rebecca Carpenter –
Its really good
Easy set up and had been working flawlessly.

Fails in heat
I’ve purchased two of these now, the first lasted almost exactly one year, the second lasted about 48 days. In each case, it failed after my car was in the sun for an extended period of time. I live in the Phoenix AZ area, so the interior of my car, even with a windshield sun screen and windows cracked gets well into the 140 degree range. When it works, it works pretty well. Initializes automatically and is pretty consistent. But the inability to take the heat is a real problem. If you live in a cooler climate, I expect it would do fine, but unfortunately extreme heat is a killer.

Works as advertised (so far…)
With the caveat that I have only used this for a week, in my 5th Gen Toyota 4runner with a Pixel 6a phone everything is good. Much more convenient than using a cable for Android Auto. Connection is available by the time I back out of the garage.

Good for a year.
My wireless adapter worked fine for about a year then just stopped. Wont factory reset or anything.

Stop working all together
I dont know why it stopped working, but it just does not connect anymore. I uninstalled and reinstalled and just after 4 and 1/2 months it won’t pair or connect or isn’t even visible on my car or phone. Will try another brand.
Thomas L. Lavery –
Lasted Only 8 months
This thing worked great for 8 months. I don’t typically write reviews but after wasting $70 on a product that failed in less than a year, I’m willing to make an exception. The setup was very easy and the quality was, what I believed to be, excellent. I would not buy another one. I will try my luck with another brand at a cheaper price point.

Works great for 2019 Golf R!
This device did just the trick and works perfectly with my 2019 Golf R. Must have for Android Auto enjoyers.
Torin Lahr –
excellent upgrade for “wired” stereos
purchased this because my Kenwood head unit wont allow streaming of music with Bluetooth, but I can make calls. and the charging from the unit to my phone via the cable was horrible. this item made that easy. I can now connect to this Bluetooth unit and stream music, run maps on my head unit without needing to plug my phone in! Knocking one star off because its very slow to connect after powering the unit up. but not a huge deal, if I ever end up in need again id 100% buy again. my wife also purchased one for her own vehicle which also acts the same with the slower connection but still a great option!

Great until it dies…
I envy the people who got it to last over a year. Mine just died after only 6 months. Driving one day then *boop* death. Buyer beware!

Did not last
Disconnects from phone frequently

Works as advertised
After years of having to plug in my phone to get Android Auto in my car, I’m very pleased to have found this device. Works exactly as advertised. Every time I get in my car, it automatically connects and pulls up Android Auto without even taking my phone out of my pocket. Wish I had found this sooner.
Wizzbert –
Works well for Android Auto
There are a few minor times it does not work. I have to unplug/plug back in and generally works. Nothing too bad with it. For the most part stays connected. It has dropped at times but recovers pretty quick (I am JUST at the point of unplugging it and it comes back when this does happen, which is rare). Overall, if it is cheap ~$50, get it for Android Auto (if supported)

Worked well, pairing instructions are garbage
Fantastic product, go to YouTube for installation or pairing. Instructions are hot garbage.

Died after 6 months, had intermittment connection issues the whole time with Pixel 6a
This product works okay, but it does sometimes lose connection. It will go weeks working fine, then will start disconnecting randomly, then stop for a while then work again. The product stopped working entirely after 6 months. It comes with a 1 year warranty so hopefully Motorola will repair or replace it.

Dont buy
Didn’t last long and doesn’t work anymore wont connect to phone

Junk
Worked great for a little more than a month. Setup and connection from Galaxy Flip 4 to 2023 Ford Explorer was fast and easy. All of a sudden while driving it lost connection and have not been able to reconnect it. Went online to Motorola and followed the step by step instructions to do a complete reset and still doesn’t work. The lights blink in ways completely different than it should according to Motorola. Now the vehicle display simply states “USB device not supported.” Since it’s just past the 30 day return window, I lost money on this piece of junk and I’m done with any Motorola product.
Dani –
It was good while it worked
No complaints on functionality except that it died after 18 months. For a device with no moving parts that stayed in the same place all its life. It’s quite disappointing.
Antonio Garcia –
Disappointed
This product was good when I first bought it. I wouldn’t say great, but it was good. Connectivity was decent, and once it was connected it work good. I wouldn’t have written this review if it would’ve lasted me longer. But unfortunately, it’s only been 6 months and it already gave out, plus my option to return it has passed. I would strongly urge caution when buying this product.
BINAMRA DUTTA –
Died after 18 months
Worked well for around 18 months with occasional disconnects here and there but has completely died now with onlu a red light that stays on. Tried resetting etc based on product docs and blogs but nothing seems to work so buying a different product. Very Disappointed in the poor quality of a 100 dollar product!

NOW it Works with my New Phone
When I first got this I had a Samsung Galaxy S9 and it had trouble cutting out occasionally and having to reboot. It also would not connect to the mobile data while connected to this device. The phone just couldn’t figure out how to send data via the mobile connection instead of the WiFi which this device uses. It was workable but definitely frustrating at times However, since getting a Galaxy S24+ a few months ago, I have not had any of these issues and it is working perfectly.

Works great until it doesn’t
Had the product for less than a year and it’s already malfunctioned. It started with just losing signal and reconnecting once or maybe twice a car ride and then it was frequently dying. Finally 6 months after I bought, it’s completely dead.
B. Baskin –
Stopped working after 6 months
Love this product for 6 months but then it just stopped working. Bummed.
T. Trubac –
Works Great. Simple
Tried a generic Chinese version that offered CarPlay and Android Auto. Couldn’t get it to work. With this one, worked right out of the box. Hardest part was getting into settings on my phone and adding a Bluetooth connection. Took longer to open the box than to connect it to the car and get it running.

Worked Great… for a year
Honestly, it was pretty good when it was working. Every once and a while you’d have to unplug it and plug it back in, but I’ve had that issue with Android Auto before so probably more of an AA issue than a device issue. However, as of a week or so ago it just stopped working. Looking into their documentation I reset the device, reset the android auto, and reset all Bluetooth settings on my phone and my car and nothing has helped. When I go to reset this device or clear the connections it just goes to a red light and the truck pops up ‘This USB device is not compatible’ or something similar. Do not buy
I’ve had this unit for several months now. When it works it’s fine. But it constantly disconnects. It’s a very annoying. In an hour’s time this thing may disconnect three or four different times. I do not recommend this because of these situations
Betto –
Disconects alot
Im ok with the time it takes to connect…but it disconnect alot! At least 3 times everytime i ride…and i do short drives 10 to 15 mins…sometimes it will ask to unplug and plug in again.ill try putting doble side tape and tape it to the dash

Only worked 2 months
Purchased this on May 8, 2024. Set up was easy enough. The time it takes to actually come on after starting the car was initially frustrating but something you get accustomed to. However, about 2 months after starting to use it, it started to work intermittently and they quit altogether. I have not been able to get it to work since. Will be trying a different product with better reviews this time.
CLCST –
Worked for 14 months
Worked for 14 months, then started disconnecting like the wired connections. I won’t buy a other one that has a wire and will buy one that looks like a jump drive.

Love it!
Works great!

So easy to setup
The setup process sounds difficult but it’s really simple. Once completed, my wife got in the car with her phone, and once it connected to her phone, it automatically opened maps, and worked perfectly to navigate. Auto opened her podcast program. it was great. Wish I’d been able to talk her into one sooner.

Awesomeness
A breeze to setup, automatically pairs with my phone. Five stars

Not good!!!
It literally worked for 1 year.I boarded in june of 2023. Just stopped working. My usb location is in a place were I never have to touch the adapter. No reason for it to stop working. Smfh

Works and easy to install
I have an Odessey 2019 and it was so difficult to constantly swap out USB cables, which suddenly “stops connecting” to android auto. So glad I did my research and found this product – great reviews and I concur. It was so easy to set-up (did have a hiccup but realized it was my car that needed a hard reset) – after that, it connected smoothly and the sound and connection has been great!

Worked go for 30 days.
Bought on 6/14 today it’s 7/23 and no longer works. Amazon says can’t return. Don’t purchase item.

DO NOT BUY THIS !!
Dont buy this, waste of money.. it happen to fail right after i can return it back. I was hoping for a good product because it was motorola, but is not. Waste of time and money!!
Andrew Holloway –
Will work just fine for 12 months
My first copy of this product died without warning in the middle of a 2-hour drive. Infuriating. Vowing to take my tiny vengeance, I purchased a competitor’s product. Gleefully, I paired the new adapter to my phone. With delight, I observed that it worked flawlessly. And… the next five times I started the car, I had to undo and redo the pairing with my phone to make the new adapter work. It was far more trouble than just cabling the phone into the head unit, which defeats the entire purpose of the device. So I returned it. And, BTW, Amazon is now taking LITERALLY 40 days and 40 nights after a return is initiated to give back your money. My return was started on July 16. I will have my money back by AUGUST TWENTY-FOURTH. (😀 Gee, thanks guys😁). So, be REAL sure your $50 is going to be well spent before you place your order. Let’s get back to the MA1. It will work almost flawlessly until it does not. It will die days after the warranty runs out, and there will be no offer of a discount or a goodwill coupon for its replacement. However — and I cannot emphasize this enough– it will do what it is supposed to do for the 365 days that it is under warranty coverage. In this category, that is a quality edge. Four stars, and not five, because you can rest well-assured this thing will not last 2 years. If you have read this far, I recommend that you buy one. Final note, NEVER buy an electronics product that is an Amazon exclusive. Just. Don’t.

Great while it lasted
Worked great… for 4 months.

Works perfectly
Great little device, easy setup and connects every time I get in the car.

Went dead at almost exact same time as many other recent reviews… Botched update?
Summary: $90 for it to work for only ~15 months before catastrophic failure is unacceptable. Initial setup was easy, as long as you follow the instructions exactly. Got 2, one for use w/ a 2020 Subaru Ascent, the other for use on a 2016 Ford Escape. Both worked great & reliably for ~15 months, until one unit disconnected mid-drive & wouldn’t reconnect. Followed all “Reset” & “Factory Reset” & “Wipe-out & start over” instructions on the Motorola site, nothing worked. Even during Factory Reset sequence, LED did not respond as the instructions stated. After unplugging & plugging back in, LED seemed to “loop” & did not respond as instructions suggested either. And I could get *NO* device to “See” the MA1’s Bluetooth broadcast to proceed w/ connection & setup. Reading recent reviews, many others have experienced the exact same thing on or near the same date as mine failed. So I can only assume a botched update? Regardless, $90 for 15 months of use is unacceptable. So buy at your own risk & I guess expect to replace it annually.

Very difficult to connect
Easy to setup initially, difficult to re-connect, phone keeps dropping from this device and re-connecting requires removing it from the phone every single time – very annoying

Was Great, Until it Wasn’t
Mounted on a 23 Honda Goldwing. Worked great for about 2 months, now it won’t work more often than it will work and I’m outside of the return or customer service window. Stuck with a $50 paperweight. If you’re looking at this for a motorcycle, IMO, look elsewhere.

Fine until it stopped connecting
I loved being able to get in and have it connect. It dropped connection in a couple areas but would always reconnect. Recently, it decided it was done and now I can’t get it to reset to try again.
